A little extra context for Bookworm since the anime skipped it and are not likely to go back and talk about it. Arno had a bad relationship with Fran because in the past they had the same master, Sister Margaret, the previous orphanage director. Sister Margaret had been abusing the young boys in the orphanage and Fran was one of her favorites. Arno had always been jealous of Fran kind of in a similar way to Delia thinking he could gain social status if he replaced him. When Sister Margaret's crimes were revealed she ended up committing suicide. Fran's obvious relief at finally being free of her, and not trying to help her/protect her angered Arno causing him to do everything he could to undermine Fran going forward. All through season 3 we can see Arno trying to sabotage Fran and make him look bad so he will get fired or worse. He was usually fairly subtle, although he always had a look on his face that told you he was up to no good. His worst offense is when he purposely lies to Fran about Ferdinand not being in the temple, and then doesn't go and tell Ferdinand what just happened. By omitting that information he put Myne at risk leading to her almost being kidnapped and taken by another duchies noble. Especially since she had been adopted by the archduke using the magical contract, Arno essentially had committed treason against the duchy by intentionally harming a member of the archducal family. It's kind of crazy to just throw in his execution as part of the end credits skit, but that basically means they aren't going to go into any more detail on Arno and Fran's past and why Arno did what he did. The thing with Bookworm is that it seems very wholesome and happy on the surface but it is A LOT darker than the anime portrays it. The anime generally shies away from the really dark stuff or off screens it, but we have already seen multiple executions, and the complete disregard for commoners lives is evident. Remember that people with the devouring are either destined to die, become a concubine in the case of women, or a devouring soldier as a man where you are a glorified slave. The only reason Myne is different is because she has so much mana that her cooperation is necessary. If she showed even a hint of disobedience, they would execute her and her entire family to hide the evidence and not think twice about it.

When they put the reward out for clearing the dungeon they also put smaller bounties on the first to beat each of the bosses leading up to floor 100 since they were confident that nobody would get far enough to collect the bounties...technically Hinata beat them so she wanted to collect on it Yea the Avatars are separate entities which their own level and skills, they also were adapting to their new forms Think of it like playing an mmo with friends after work, they will need to level their characters and gear them up to take on the raid boss(Team Green Fury)...also remember them mentioning floor 49...Rimuru is downright diabolical for that if they keep the LN version of it

The anime team for WHA did an absolutely fantastic job of bringing the illustration to life!! And that’s saying a lot considering how praised the manga is. It’s a true love letter to the medium that goes all the way down to the embedded magic system—magic is art, and art is magic. I absolutely get what you mean, cuz it reminded me of a Ghibli movie too! I don’t know if it’s the animation style or the content, but it has that mesmerizing feeling that Spirited Away always gave me as a kid. It’s been lauded for a long time as completing the new Big Three in fantasy with Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon, and I can absolutely see why. I started reading the manga a few weeks before the anime premiere and holyyyy THIS STORY! I think you’re already starting to catch on that it’s going to be a lot darker than it seems at first.

Witch Hat is great. More reactions please.

Without spoiling anything, if you’re wondering about the “goal” of the story and the stakes and tone it will take, then ask yourself another question: what could possibly be the goal of a masked witch selling books of forbidden magic, and the components to use them, to ignorant children? Also, in terms of combat, it’s definitely still possible. They say you can’t cast spells to directly affect another person’s body. So you can’t cast a spell to set someone on fire, okay, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cast a spell to make a flamethrower and then aim it at them. At least that’s my logic. But I think the ambiguity and gray area is part of the point—it forces people to think creatively, but also invites a lot of questions about how the rules are implemented. And it does bring up an interesting question, which is that if the spell that crystallized (?) Coco’s mother was forbidden magic, and casting magic on a human body, even healing magic, is forbidden, then would reversing the spell on her even be allowed?

I didn’t expect Witch Hat Atelier to be the one to push me over to the Patreon. I thought it would be the next LotM related thing. But I guess it’s time to rewatch some anime here or check out the Patreon only anime.

I can't wait for later this Bookworm season when we get to Hasse and I pray to the gods they don't censor it at all.

Zarrowk

Just cause you asked, the masked witch at the start of Witch Hat Atelier that gives her the book is the same VA as Tamzy in Gachiakuta, Uraume in JJK, or Yelena in SNK.

I really hope you continue watching Witch Hat Atelier, it's one of my favorite manga.

Morringhan

I'm here for bookworm

SLIMEEEEE this season is going to be phenomenal!

Bookworm notes: Chat told you about the letter looking ugly cause they're commoners that can barely write so that's clear. The "overly" dramatic music is not out of place at all in the interaction between the female guard and Fran. You have to remember grey robes are literally disposable trash in this world. She could've killed him on the spot for just speaking up to a noble, but she chose to actually even kinda apologise, showing us that she's actually really chill compared to other nobles. Lastly Arno was explained by others. Yeah bro got executed, just like the guard that was mean to Myne on their mission. Life is very fragile in this world, they don't explicitly show it a lot of the time, but making a stupid mistake can get you killed, there's no second chances, no slap on the wrist.

You absolutely need to react to Witch Hat Ah-Telly-Ay

The production value of Witch Hat Atelier is one of the most incredible I've ever seen in an anime series (the manga's art style is outstanding as well. The Grimoire edition is absolutely stunning). The story takes its time but becomes incredibly rich and complex, with themes that are deeper and darker than you might expect here. Witch Hat Atelier is a seinen, not a shonen. It’s not one of the new “Big 3 of Fantasy” for nothing (along with Frieren and Dungeon Meshi). And the music is composed by Yuka Kitamura, the incredible composer behind FromSoftware’s games (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring). Ascendance of a Bookworm is on my list. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it.

The Pots

can anyone tell me why Luke is not doing Tensura as a patreon reaction anymore?

Zaki Alkabli

Some0neElse

ok ive been waiting for witch hat ever since Gigguk spoke about it lets see how good it is

Some0neElse

btw are we ignoring the fact that Rosemyne is now effectively the High Bishop?

Orkidaisy

In defense of Qifrey, his first reaction was actually snatching Coco and saving her from the magic. If he was just a selfish asshat, he could have just run away himself and let Coco destroy herself with whatever magic she drew. Also, he didn't know what she drew, and by the time he realized the mother was in danger, it was already too late. As for erasing the memory, I get the feeling that it's more about rules of the world, as in this is how it's taught to be, so it's more like a reflex than anything else. Would he just have left Coco by herself, we won't ever know.

Koga Wolfe

The skip after the end of the first episode is making me want to read the manga now.

TheFihr
