Luke watching my favorite musical on my day off? Today is a good day

HipnoAmadeus0

Hell yeah! The one musical I like ngl

Trina Key

London is a great palce to see, it's just not exotic for a person from Europe. I love London for it's musical theaters. When I was younger I used to fly to London twice a year with my sister just to see a show, but that was a time when the prices weren't so crazy.

Silver

Never clicked so fast

Rennna

Sweeney Todd was originally a musical play and it does come back time to time. Sadly I've never seen it even though this (and Moulin Rouge) is my favorite musical of all times because I'd love to see it in English but destined to live in non English speaking country we've only offered the translated mess. And yes, Tim, Johnny and Helena are besties and Johnny is the godfather of Tim's and Helena's children (at least some of them)

Adam Crosby

I think you'd really enjoy Little Shop of Horrors. It has songs by the same writers of songs from Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Plus the cast is amazing.

menelito

Holy moly, one of my all time favorite movies when I was an edgy kid... still love it, from time to time I still pick back up the soundtrack and scream JOHAAAAAANNAAAAAAA along with the song. lol

menelito

I've seen some recordings of the play. I have to say, it seems pretty fun and live it would be an amazing experience, no doubt, but the sound engineering in this movie is incredible and, I think, uncopyable on a stage. There is too much difference in the art form, only Oshi no Ko made me think there is a way around it... but the plays I've seen up to now don't use any specific stage device to bring the experience closer to viewing a movie. So, yeah, I forgot the point I was trying to make... eheh, I just love the movie too much.

Jhostar

Next, you should check out Repo: The Genetic Opera!

Anthony

lets do the time warp AGAIN ,AGAIN, AGAIN. Fuck your mother.

Richard Lessard

There is a Proshot from Broadway of Sweeney Todd available (I own it on DVD) starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. She won a Tony Award for Best Actress and he won for Best Actor.

Spidergirls Mama

Nice, did not expect this one. I think you would really like Shrek: the musical. It's so much fun! Tick Tick Boom is fantastic. Little Shop of Horrors is a classic. I'm enjoying your romp into the very varied landscape of musicals.

Skraith77

The movie is good, but that proshot is in a world of it's own better.

My brother in the Light, your reaction is the unexpected Yuletide Gift in the spring that keeps on giving. You innocent, kind, sweet summer child. You were not prepared. Sweeney Todd was originally a stage musical play which was written by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim's musicals are all textually challenging, that no matter the trope, they never quite play exactly to it, and as such, they're masterpieces of every genre. Sondheim wrote many, many, many shows with a weird twist before Tim Burton was out of diapers. (ok, not quite, but Sondheim definitely came before Burton in the Modern Entertainment works, quite solidly). I mentioned in a previous chat about musicals how Sondheim was New York City's 20th century Musical Playwright Extraordinaire, and the man who basically shaped modern theater with his bizarre genre-bending. Sondheim met and mentored Jonathan Larson (Tick Tick Boom! and Rent), and then Sondheim met and mentored Lin Manuel Miranda (In the Heights, Hamilton, and the movie director's debut filming Tick Tick Boom! as a love letter in memory of Sondheim and in tribute of the protege who died too soon - Jonathan Larson.) Sweeney Todd DOES exist in a Broadway Archive version of the film with the original broadway cast starring Len Cariou as Todd and Angela Lansbury of Murder, She Wrote later fame as Mrs. Lovett. I literally just saw another reactor pair react to the archival film. If you would like to see the 1979 production of the combo Horror/Dark Humor genre bash, let me know and I'll go find which film they saw and where they sourced it. Sondheim also has another Original Broadway stage recording of one of his other very famous broadway shows from the 80s -- Into The Woods. You can watch the stage version archives with OBC for free on YouTube if you want to see what Sondheim did when he genre-bent Fairy Tales. Seriously, friend. The whole wall-o-text chat backchannel (still sorry for that, by the way, lol) about Sondheim and Tick Tick Boom, and never watch the Rent movie, look for the 20th anniverary live broadway recording from 2008 right before it came off broadway for good, etc? You've gone even one step farther backward to understand every musical on the list from Tick Tick Boom to Rent if you watch it (NOT THE MOVIE! at least not first) to In The Heights, even Hamilton which you've already seen -- you're really working on one "franchise" of Musical Continuity my dude. Great reaction, tons of fun. Carry on!

The Large Amoeba

If we're doing musicals how do I get Little Shop of Horrors 1986(Directors Cut), on the ballot?

BTSandVMIN

If Luke keeps watching musicals I really hope he watches Moulin Rouge. The emotional rolletcoaster and tonal whiplash would be so fun to watch.

AdamPacio.art

Also, the disease you get from cannibalism is actually reserved to eating another human brain called "Kuru" because of prions (single celled creatures) that live in spongy brain mass and fluid. Cannibalism of the rest of the body doesn't carry any specific disease, but Kuru is real and can be deadly. Perhaps deservedly so seeing as the way you'd catch it. "Long Pork" is an Asian translation of Chinese slang for the practice of cannibalism, and in the period of the British Raj in India, one slang term for human sacrifice was "white goat", but that's rather specific and extremely localized to revenge and terror tactics by locals in a very political movement of resistance (popularized in the novel The Far Pavilions by MM Kaye I believe, same woman who romanticized slavery-based US southern culture in Gone With the Wind.) But I think you were reaching for "long pork".

Moriyasha01

I remember when i was in cinema for this movie and many others probly just went because Johny Depp was in it. They left when they started singing xD. (Personally really enjoed the movie.

Laryn Ann Tapp

Oh no. This movie was horrible. The original Broadway show was recorded and released...it has Angela Landsbury (sp?) in it. That one is an A+. This one never should have seen the light of day. Watch the Broadway video when you can...doesn't have to be a reaction. I just want you to see the best Sweeny Todd. I saw it on Broadway when I was 14...I'm 62 now! I have the DVD of the Broadway show and still watch it. Trust me!!

Laryn Ann Tapp

I also have that DVD...this movie is hideous.

Laryn Ann Tapp

The original Broadway show is available on DVD and it's incredible. Should be able to get it on Amazon.

AdamPacio.art

Sorry for the triple post, just watched the ending of the film. I... just want to say that if nothing else, your reaction take on the gothic horror story of Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street shows me that over time, it's not just HOW we tell stories that changes with culture, it's WHY we tell stories that also changes. The villain of the story is always Mrs. Lovett. You correctly figured that out at the end. Modern sensibilities which you exemplify to your credit, friend, seem to interfere with the entry point from the 70s. It was easier for us to overlook a few bad things along the way if the character was sympathetic. After Gen X hit their 20s and the Millennials were underway, there was a shift in social awareness? And while I first watched the end of Return of the Jedi and bought whole cloth the idea that a single good act at the end of a life erased all the evil up until that point for Vader, by the time I was rewatching the VHS in my 30s that was no longer acceptible and the fact that Han shot first suddenly became problematic whereas originally that signal of Han's badassery registered as the hallmarks of a 'cool' dude. Once we got over the stockholm syndrome of identifying with the Boomer Bullies who used to terrorize us growing up, we shifted. BUt things have gone so far now that you were not fooled by Sondheim's weaving a sympathetic persona around Sweeney Todd. Sondheim told the story as a kind of a 'gotcha' and a moral lesson to the audiences. The original audiences watched this and cheered for Sweeney every step along the way. And only a few people turned aside or shuddered at the earliest steps. It was more of a "how much cruelty will you as the audience member forgive from the villain before the slow disappearance of the veneer of basic sympathy wakes you up to your complicity in his actual, unmitigated evil? How far do you go as an individual before you stop making excuses for the villain, just so you can applaud? The same question is also the entire point of the story of DUNE, by the way. Paul is the villain from the beginning and you cheer every step along his rise to theocratic fascist violent fatwa for the sole motivation of revenge. This story exemplifies a very difficult kind of story to write - the story about the Anti-Hero. Sweeney is the protagonist. And he is so flawed that he is not heroic, he is Anti-Heroic. Yet this is his story. And it is only at the end we reveal Mrs. Lovett to be the actual Villain, to give us permission for having vented our own shadow with such glee along the way. Mrs. Lovett is our redemption as humans. Because otherwise, we can't claim plausible deniability. And even that "escape hatch back to self-righteousness" is part of the genius, and the commentary subtext, that Sondheim is using to remind us we all carry the capacity for active evil a lot more than any of us would ever admit to ourselves otherwise. You come from a different generation. You don't really need a wake up call which Sweeney Todd presents under the guise of a very clever story. You, from the very beginning, sat there and said, "This guy sucks. Who am I supposed to root for again? Even the sailor dude is a major creep and a stalker. There's no one in this story I can root for." And that. Is exactly. The whole point. You picked up on it from the beginning. Many others need the entire play before they catch on. It may feel unholy and morally dirty to you, and it should. And that is exactly WHY Sondheim told the 1979 debut audiences this very tale.

Arcane Pengi

The play is a bit more light since the camera angles and effects add so much to the darkness of the Tim Burton movie. It's the same songs and writing. The play has an additional song I believe.

Trina Key

To answer your question whether we would like your reaction to this movie, let me just say we are here to enjoy watching the things we like with you. We, or at least I, don’t expect you to react or feel in the same way we did while watching this. It’s about sharing thoughts and experience.

Trina Key

I feel you, I also hate translations and the musical theatre in my country is nowhere close to the level of the west end or broadway. I’ve managed to see some shows in London but my wishlist is pretty long for the shows and what I manage to see is limited by my budget and what’s on right now.

Trina Key

Is it available to watch anywhere? I’ve never managed to see this one live in London because either they weren’t playing it or we had some other shows scheduled to see.

Trina Key

If you would like something uplifting after this maybe Matilda the musical?

Eamber

ONE of my FAV Musicals! I love this Movie! I used to watch it on repeat when it first came out

NikiBelle

I just watched the Les Mis reaction yesterday - and literally this movie came to mind when you mentioned Helena! Fun facts - this is based on a stage musical (which is much better and pro-shots are highly recommended). Helena and Tim were married (I believe now officially divorced). On another note though - If you want something much more uplifting : Shrek! - Frozen - Mamma Mia! - Footloose! - Hairspray

Eamber

That movie is more messed up than Sweenty Todd! HE NEEDS TO WATCH! Omg gets to the song "Zydrate " OMG

Maisie

This movie traumatized me.

PumpkinSparks

I love this musical. This is peak Sondheim! His lyricism, and music, nearly rap-like musical writing, and layering of different voices and melodies and tempos... I just love that mans writing!!! I would say there ARE people to root for: Johanna and Toby! They are sweet, (more or less) innocent people who get thrown into horrible situations. I'm pretty sure that we're also supposed to like Anthony, but I agree that he's a bit stalkery/obsessive. This whole "obsession at first side that is seen as true love"-trope was incredibly common though and without that massive red flag he seems to be a sweet and honest guy. And who survives this story? These three guys! Every truly horrible person dies! So, you could make the argument that this tragedy has a happy ending ;) YES, for Tick Tick... Boom!!! You actually gonna love it!

Wonderxfull

Yes it makes for a fantastic play, my high school put this on one year when I was going there and they built a functioning barber's chair and shoot and everything (falling feet first though for safety). Two floors and all. It was very impressive for highschoolers tbh. Saw this movie in class too-choir. I enjoyed your reaction a lot. Its.. definitely unlike other movies/plays as you saw. Going into a movie like this and expecting your standard story beats, the ones that end with some kind of happy ending and not getting it at all was mind blowing to me as a kid. You don't see this kind of story, or at least I haven't. I always have weird dreams after watching Sweeney Todd.

TheKnightwatchOfficial

Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, and Helena Bonham Carter are the magic trio that can never do any wrong. And while I absolutely love this movie, I can admit that this is probably the closest to wrong they've ever gotten. And it's not crazy what happened to Barker/Todd. Watch "The Count of Monte Cristo."

Michael Mavis

Not 18+ so... um... public SA doesnt count for 18+? odd

Kimmy C

I would love for you to do more Sondheim musicals. I think you would like Into the Woods (NOT THE MOVIE!) there's an original Broadway cast recording from the 80s. I also concur with everyone suggesting you watch the Sweeney stage version with Angela Lansbury and Little Shop of Horrors movie.

Anika

In the first song he says "there was another man who saw that she (the wife) was beautiful". So the judge had him arrested just to get Sweeney out of the way. Saying this because you said that you didn't understand why he was arrested.

Anika

I totally agree. Into the Woods. Broadway version!!!

King Moo

Great movie, great musical, glad to get your reaction! I notice you often ask if you're giving a good reaction whenever you're watching something that is shocking or emotional and I'd like to say that one of the main reasons I watch your content is because you don't really shy away from things that get you emotional, whether that's sad or horrified or angry. I think that's the best kind of content, it validates us viewers who felt the same way! So keep on being genuine in your reactions! Anyways I'm sure I'm not the first person to say something like that, in fact I bet I've even commented this before in the past but a little more validation never hurts!

Phoenix_mercury

I don't think he realised fully and "just"(with the biggest quotes possible) thought touching/groping ect not actual SA

Zairenzu

Love this movie! Really funny to hear that it's 18 and it "means it's messed up". I'm pretty sure it was PG13 here (Quebec, Canada), I remember seeing it with my mom for my birthday, which according to the year it came out I was 15 when it came out. XD Then again basically nothing is rated R here, even if it's rated R in the rest of Canada. But honestly it's not that bad, I've seen a lot worse in movies. I mean they imply a lot of bad things but they don't show a lot of it. But then again even at 15 I had watched loads of horror movies and I just think a lot of the gore in this is pretty funny. I mean I watched The Ring 2 for my 13th birthday. (Also PG13 of course. XD)

Michael Mavis

I do love this movie, the vocals are simply amazing.

José Paredes

I love this movie, everyone I know hates it, so... welcome to the teamz trougthy enjoyed your reaction. A little sugestión for future animated movies reaction, why not the classic Don Bluth movies? Secret of Nihm, The Land Before Time and All Dogs go to Heaven. Completley underrated classics.

Mericat

Little Shop of Horrors is my FAVORITE he’d absolutely love it lol

Zairenzu

Bruh, this is like at least the 4th time I've seen this movie and I just now noticed Anthony Head is there with a speaking line for like 5 seconds. XD How did I never notice!?

Hugabug008

If you want a musical that highlights the best of humanity instead of the worst please check out "Come From Away"

Zairenzu

Like I know Anthony is supposed to be one of the good guys, but I hate him the most. XD

Zairenzu

Yup, I personally love when people watch and enjoy things that I love. =)

Zairenzu

Lol most characters in this are terrible people but Sweeney Todd is entertaining and quirky so I root for him. But he's a fictional character, sure bad stuff happened to him and that's why he turned out this way, but that's the case with every bad person. Nobody is evil, they just grew up around people/situations that made them that way, not to say they aren't responsible for acting that way, but it does mean that they can be taught to be better, though for some it's worse to try than to just get rid of them. But hey, that's society for you, hopefully it improves sooner than later. But hey, fictional characters are fictional, I can root for whatever horrible people I want because I know it's not real, if someone were to think like this in real life I definitely wouldn't root for them. I'd think what they're doing is horrible and that they need therapy.

Zairenzu

Was literally about to write this. Also I just noticed Anthony Head is in this movie for like 5 seconds and I never noticed until now.

BGTitan

Genuinely one of my favorite musicals. The stage version definitely does some things better but the movie is still pretty fun. .... Don't look at me like that, fun can mean many things. Lucy went to the party because the Beetle told her the Judge was sorry and wanted to apologize for what happened. I'd say the people that you're supposed to root for are Johanna and Toby, cuz they're just people who have been thrown into awful situations. But I'd also say that I support Sweeney getting revenge on the Judge. Cuz screw the Judge (RIP Alan Rickman). But I think that's also kind of the charm of this story/musical, is that everyone is just kind of awful in their own ways. One of the changes from stage to screen was how Sweeney's chair gets rid of the bodies, it's feet first in the musical, which makes sense. In the movie however, they changed it so that the bodies landed on their heads, which just adds another factor that makes me squirm. If they weren't already dead from the cut they certainly were after the fall. Also you'll notice that with everyone Sweeney kills, the blood kind of cartoonishly squirts out rather violently. Except when he kills The Beggar Woman. Her blood comes out like a waterfall straight down her neck, a big clue to those who hadn't caught on that she was Lucy that she was different than the rest. And wouldn't you know it, the same thing happens when Toby kills Todd. Something else I'll say about Anthony and Johanna's relationship is something that is made a little more obvious in the stage production. It's not really love that's bringing them together, Johanna just wants to get out of her situation with the Judge (valid) and there's even a line in one of their songs that didn't make it to the movie version where Johanna sings that she "knew she'd marry [Anthony] someday even not knowing who he [was]" with a sort of expression that's like 'hang on a sec'. It's the musicals way of acknowledging that this isn't actual love.... at least not yet. Who knows about their future. Although if I'm remembering correctly (and you'll have to forgive me it's been awhile since I've seen anything from the stage version) Anthony honestly wasn't that much better than the Judge. Just another person obsessed with something he found pretty. As for why I'm watching this reaction, I just like seeing people react to this movie and I like your reactions in general.... so it's a win win you know?

Jeqspel

Would love to see you react to Moulin Rouge!!!!

Sanmei

I dearly wish they'd included the Ballad of Sweeney Todd with it. I feel like without that song to bookend the production, it really misses something. With the ballad, it's a sordid tale the likes of which get passed around campfires and between teenagers out to spook each other (and supposedly based on a true story, according to some sources). Without it, it's just a dark movie with a grim ending. Shoutout to the productions I've seen where the song is performed while Sweeney is being prepared for burial, only for him to erupt from his casket to personally belt out a personalized version of the last few lines, then turn and slam the casket shut as the stage lights go dark.

Ram.

There are very much evil people who know what they're doing is wrong and enjoy it very much, regardless of upbringing. Some of the most horrific people had good childhoods and lives, but chose evil and relished it.

Nicholas Johnson

Nah, I find it more than strange, it's creepy. Very much "Every Breath You Take" vibes.

Amanda T

One of my favorites and was going to suggest it also.

Nicholas Johnson

Imagine walking into that room later. A dead man with his throat slit holding a woman with her throat slit. A woman in the oven. Beadle and Judge Turpin, throats slit on the floor. Body parts everywhere. Those investigators have their work cut out.

Amanda T

The more he takes life the less he feels and the song shows it.

Breezee92

Thank you for watching Sweeney Todd. This is one if my favorite musicals.

Amberyootoob

Want a vegetarian meat pie? Made with 100% vegetarians!

Arctic_Hokkyoku

Actually unironically one of my favorite movies of all time.

ILike Beanies

Okay I never make comments on patreon, but OH MY GOD. One of my favorite Johnny Depp movies that NO ONE TALKS ABOUT and my favorite reaction youtuber is watching it?! How did I get this lucky like WHAT??

PurelyWhiimsy

yesss he should def watch little shop of horrors

Shadow_284

God I love Sweeny Todd. Been a few years since I’ve seen it though. And yes, your reaction was great.

Kate

So for me London was simultaneously escape and goal. As an American (ugh that phrase but I can't escape it) from a rural, somewhat isolated upbringing (and even living in a very small city for a decade+ as an adult) moving someplace like London was very exciting and daunting. I got to live there for 3 years as a uni student (mature international student, heh) and it honestly lived up to every hope I had. Yes, it's a city like any other huge global hub, good and bad.

Shiloh Thompson

My head cannon is that after Toby killed Todd, he came up and he and Johanna waited for Anthony and all 3 went and left the city like Anthony and Johanna wanted

Willow

That is such a good call! I think he could have a lot of fun with it.

Taraster33

First of all Little Shop of Horrors is an AMAZING choice. SEEEMOUR!!!!! Rick Moranis forever is one of my favorite actors in anything he did (and may be a part of SpaceBalls 2 announced) Also as a side there are diseases that can be caught through eating humans but the most deadly and common diseases are labeled as Prion diseases. I am not an expert but i believe if you get a Prion disease is messes with your brain permanently. Prion diseases are transferred to people by consuming brain and spinal chord meat / fluid. I think humans can also get the same or similar kind of disease by consuming monkey brains which was once seen as an exotic / niche meal in certain regions. This was showcased in Indiana Jones 2 the Temple of Doom the whole monkey brain eating scene. I hope you enjoyed my little info session!

Tre

If you want more amazement of maybe actors you didn’t know could sing or had a background in theatre, then you have to watch Into the woods! It’s so good!! And I think you’d enjoy it!

Amy Bedster

You want dark musicals? Repo the genetic opera.

Amy Bedster

OMG I LITERALLY JUST SUGGESTED THAT

Amy Bedster

I also vote the recent west side story and moulin rouge

Amy Bedster

ZYDRATE COMES IN A LITTLE GLASS VIAL

Amy Bedster

Yeahhhh all sondheims a bit fucked up…

TheKnightwatchOfficial

This is one of those movies that you don't understand why you like it so much considering how messed up it is. I never realized how much like The Count of Monte Cristo it is, for the most part. I recommend watching any version of The Count of Monte Cristo. I've seen. 1934, 2002, and the French 2024 versions, love them all!

Emma Watson

Helena BC and Tim Burton were "married". And have 2 children together.

David Calderon

I've noticed you like movies or content with a deep meaning that teaches you something, and I'd really like you to watch a movie that I think you'll really enjoy. It's called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a 2013 film that teaches you a lesson as important as it is simple: "live your life." I think you might like it a lot.

turner husak family

Watch into the woods but its a dark twist on fairy tails

Jennifer Ambrose

Argh. The stage production of this is so much better than the movie. It’s so hard to watch a Mrs Lovett who can’t sing and they cut the funniest parts.

Karen Boyd-Smith

Prions are actually incorrectly folded proteins. They aren't organisms and aren't even alive. They cause disease by triggering other proteins to misfold, and misfolded proteins can't function correctly. Otherwise, all correct.

Ashley Elliott

whats your discord? I don't see a link :(

Maria Amado

Yes Luke we enjoy this reaction. We come for the genuine first time reaction not for a music critic or wtv. It's actually refreshing to have a different thing from time to time. It also gave me the opportunity to revisit this movie that I really used to love when I was younger

vincencash

I'm telling you man. After that emotional trauma watch Moulin Rouge, it will get you views

B3thbakes

How did it miss this before? 👀

B3thbakes

Remember this was back a day! You didnt date a bunch and spend really any time together.. You caught eachothers interest.. you would maybe court for a small amount of time.. but basically that was it then. You didnt hugely interact until you got married.. maye me think of the Twilight film when Rosalie is explaining her past and how she changed.. she said.. you could maybe have a couple chaperoned walks.. maybe steal a kiss on a cheek.. but before marriage. That was it.. 🤷‍♀️
