ariel

oh this was a unexpected surprise

Hugabug008

Oh! If you do Aladdin you should watch Twisted after. It is a parody musical of it by Starkid on YouTube

NM

Stephen Sondheim is super acclaimed in musical theater, he wrote many shows, including Sweeney Todd which you watched

M3rlin

Im pretty sure Andrew Garfield learned to sing just for this

M3rlin

So excited for this!

NM

Everyone in the diner is a broadway legend basically. They’re all famous

Kai

Its here!! Whooo

Eamber

This movie is beautiful! I HIGHLY recommend RENT

raven

Hey Luke, if you're able to i heavily recommend you check our Maphra, she's a cover artist who's really popping off right now so i think it'd get the views necessary aswell and I'm almost 100% certain you'd love her voice. I'd recommend starting with her cover of Doomed by Bring Me The Horizon if you're able to!

NM

Phone lines aren’t connected to the power

Hugabug008

Tell me you didn't grow up a theater kid without telling me you didn't grow up a theater kid. 100% guarantee that at at least one point during the party at least one person randomly bursts into song with the likelihood of everyone in the vicinity joining in also incredibly high ( but honestly it will probably happen at least 3)

NM

Sondheim just wanted to give advice, he’s a writer not a producer

Chloe

tick tick boom is a movie about the musical jonathan wrote about his life (which is tick tick boom), as he was struggling in nyc and writing superbia. his experiences then inspired him to write rent after tick tick boom

Theo Downes

Ooh, man, I've only gotten to the song "come to your senses" and witnessing how it's touched you emotionally. I'm nervous for you for the rest of the movie. Thank you for reacting to this, its one of my favorites.

Emily Jewett

Well, add rent to the list. And I look forward to the Disney bracket too.

Lisette Agosto

I definitely side with the comments asking to react to Rent.

Alyx V

I still listen to this soundtrack when I'm gaming

Talia Adams

I need a Rent reaction immediately!!

Before cell phones became a thing, a certain type slightly older phone which was usually corded and hooked up directly to a land line phone signal would run off of the power that was carried in the landline connection itself. Enough to power the phone you plugged into it so you could have your electricity shut off and still be able to dial out on your phone and cook on your gas-powered stovetops (gas was a separate bill... if you had an electric range you were screwed, but gas ranged allowed gaps in electric service to be survivable, which helped in power outages too.) You mentioned Checkhov's Gun. It's the principle that Anton Checkhov wrote into his plays, that in the "rules" of plays if you introduce something by featuring or calling attention to it in Act One, then it has to be fired (for the bespoke gun) or become critically important before the end of the play. And Tick Tick Boom showed us the shutoff notice three times.

Hugabug008

I was a music minor in college and every day the first 15 minutes of class was the teacher passing out random sheets of music and we had maybe a minute or two to skim through it then had to sing it

PumpkinSparks

I love this movie and have too many thoughts in my head, so this is just gonna be random information and in the next one I'm gonna say my actual thoughts… - I love that you don't know who Steven Sondheim is! Seriously, look him up!!! - Michael is based on Jonathans real life best friend Matt. He is gay, did leave a possible carreer in the Performing arts to work in Advertising, and was diagnosed as HIV positive. Luckily he was one of the few who never developed AIDS and now still lives his life in New York and tends to view every revival of Rent - Andrew Gafield was able to hold a tune before, but took intense singing lessons to prepare for his role. I do believe he also took piano lessons to believably mimic his movements and posture to someone playing the piana, but I'm not 100% on that… - thater Kids totally break out into song and start to harmonize during parties all the time! And there are some crazy gifted ones who just come up with lyrics to some random beat - we usually call them writers and/or rappers ;) - in the Sunday bruch Scene every extra was a Broadway legend and/or someone who worked on a Broadway Show with Lin. Speaking of which: the cook in that Scene is Lin! This was his movie directing debut, but yes we mostly know him as the writer of Hamilton and In the Heights, and the Music writer of Moana and Encanto - the tragedy is that Superbia was before its time. Back then no one got it, today it would land but would be labeled as too woke... - Some characters are the amalgamation of several people, the timelines were changed for a better story structure, some aspects are partially true... as it said in the beginning, generally that is the true story.

PumpkinSparks

When I first heard that they gonna make "Tick Tick… Boom" a movie, my brain immediately went: How? I knew about it as a one man play from and about Jonathan Larson. I also knew that the show evolved over time - that songs were scratched, rewritten, or replaced - that characters were changed (especially Susan, who's role changed depending on where Jonathan was with his real life on-and-off again girlfriend)… how could they make that into a movie? I think they were crazy smart with the screenplay! They researched all the different itterations of Tick Tick… Boom, they looked at all the versions of Superbia and how to incorporate it, they talked to Jonathans friends and families and really listened to their input. And I think they came up with an amazing screenplay!!! I think the aspect I love most is that they listened to the family who basically said that Jonathan was talented and inspiring and loving and charismatic, but flawed! And they specifically asked to show his flaws alongside his awesomeness. Which is something you commented about and I would point out as a strength in the script I also love that "Tick Tick… Boom" still is the on-stage bit. And everything we see "in real life" is either what really happened and inspired him, or the illusion of what Jonathan made up for his show - in most cases we don't know what is what, and I think that possibility of interpretation is one of the strenghts of the screenplay All of that being said: now that you know about Jonathan Larson and the life he lived before he passed, you really should check out Rent! I know most musical kids will tell you to watch the stage version (which is incredible!), but I do have the unpopular opinion that the movie is better... It might be my bias since that movie was my introduction to modern musicals and I do recognize certain flaws in it. But I also feel that most theater kids are too harsh and gate-keepy on it and can't look past the changes it did on the original and can't recognize that it's an actual good movie! But watching Rent now will be enhanced since you will now know the parrallels to his life and understand why he wrote that story at that time!

John Shoemaker

This movie tears me up every time. I believe it talks about the real characters at the end. Michael is really Matt O’Grady and he survived the AIDS epidemic in the US and has worked tirelessly to keep Jonathan’s name alive since he died. A true friend til the end.

John Shoemaker

Yep when I saw how hard it hit him at that point I knew I’d be crying my eyes out with him the rest of the way.

Jennifer Ambrose

The stage production of this is a three person show. Basically the stage parts of this with the actors playing Jonathan, Michael, and his girlfriend. Jonathan Larson originally wrote it

Anika

If you react to Rent, I recommend the Broadway version.

m

You should watch Annie (2014)!! Musical ofc! My fav version:))

Jennifer Ambrose

The random singing is actually a thing that happens at show people cast parties lol. At least it did in my 20s lol

Anika

Something you should know about theater/chior people is yes, there is definitely singing at our parties, that may be A cappella or with a piano/keyboard.

Jennifer Ambrose

You need to watch Sondheim that isn’t Sweeney Todd. In particular watching Sunday in the Park with George will explain so much of the Sunday moon dance number

Jennifer Ambrose

The moon dance Sunday song is a direct parody of Sunday from Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park w George and every person in the diner is a Broadway superstar. And Bernadette Peters is in both. And the bums were the stars of Rent. And in the scene with the masterclass where Sondheim gives him advice, everyone in the audience is a famous Broadway composer

Jennifer Ambrose

Also the folks in the focus group are also huge Broadway stars

Jennifer Ambrose

I laughed so hard…. With old school landline phones you didn’t need power, just a phone line lol

fry

i love this movieeeee andrew garfield should have won the oscar seriously. you should 100% watch rent (the stage musical not the movie) jonathan larson really changed musicals forever with that and he inspired so many people like lin manuel and that’s why he decided to take on this project and he also starred in tick tick boom i believe. it makes it so sad that you see him striving for success this whole movie and then after he dies is when he gets it. also the character michael was based on jon’s best friend matt who thankfully still alive. also he took rosa’s advice with rent when she said to “write what you know” rent is even sadder 😭😭

fry

and the piano too

Jennifer Ambrose

The play would be different but the bones of it are still in this movie. For what it’s worth, the best friend Michael is based on is still alive

Jennifer Ambrose

If you watch Rent, please watch the recorded stage version

Taraster33

Having grown up in the 90's. Telephones back then only had one wire that connected to the phone plug. This plug was wired independently from the power and this plug also gave a small electric current that was enough to power the phone so calls could be made even if the power was out. Fun fact, now I feel old lol

Talia Adams

I’ve been wanting a Rent reaction for years but it absolutely has to be the follow up after this. It is my favorite musical of all time!!

RNJedi

I love this movie And fantastic reaction. I think what needs to be considered when you look at John Larsons choices is the time he lived in 1990. No widely used or accessable Internet, no cell phones, plus no car in his case. Hiv and aids were a death sentence at this time and many people around John were getting sick and dying and it didn't seem like anyone was doing anything about it. Rent came to be because of that. He wrote what was real in his life. I definitely suggest checking out the the making of this movie, it give context for so many things. Michael (the real one Matt) is in it as well and gave a fantastic interview. I cried my eyes out.

Willow

Typing this through blurry eyes because man it hit all over again. This reaction was lovely to watch and now I desperately hope you might watch the Rent movie at some point. I listened to that soundtrack on repeat when I was in high school, haha.

Willow

What I would GIVE for Luke to react to StarKid...

Willow

LOL, I had a similar thought in that moment. I was like, oh yeah no this happened all the time with the theater kids in and out of school.

RNJedi

I 💯 agree with you!

RNJedi

Me too 😂

Sierra Harkess

Ugh love this musical so much, so glad you’ve watched it and really hope you watch Rent now that you’ve seen this. Something that always breaks my heart watching this is that Andrew Garfield’s mom passed away from cancer shortly before filming began and he’s talked about how he channeled the grief into this role, especially the song Why. He truly was so perfect for this role, Lin knew what he was doing with the casting

Fernanda Palomar

57:54 I'm sorry this has nothing to do with anything but I've been crying laughing at this hahaha "fuck you" was so unexpected to me lmaaaoooo

Darsy Smith

OH MY GOSH I HAVE THE MOST GOOSEBUMPS EVER. I'm going to cry. I never in a million years thought you'd get to this so quickly. THANK YOU. Edit: is it cruel (affectionate) of me to have the song Why be the dream Luke react? This whole movie is basically my dream Luke react if I'm honest. Right now my husband and I are installing air conditioners ahead of a tornado-watch storm hitting us in about 3 hours, so I have to wait to start... but I could not be more excited.

Darsy Smith

He did! I don't have all the details completely right, but it's something like, Lin was talking to someone who knows Andrew and said how he'd like Andrew to be the lead in TTB. He asked if Andrew could sing, and the friend, being a bro, said he could! Andrew I *think* fessed up to Lin when Lin reached out to him and Lin said the production would take long enough to get going that there was time to learn. So he did. He's so good, and the idea that you could learn and with dedication become good enough to lead a musical creditably is SO inspiring, tbh.

Darsy Smith

I feel like most people do it the other way because they go with the more popular and well known musical first... but having it in this order is more meaningful!

Talia Adams

I agree it’s typically the other way around and I haven’t seen it done it this order but I’m not mad at it. He might pick up on some more things in Rent this way

Darsy Smith

I was rooting SO HARD for the Oscar! I also wish I knew how to make .gifs because that scene where he writes the word 'the' and then slowly backspaces is SO a writer thing, oh my gosh. As a writer with a deadline myself I'm 100% going to watch this instead of writing...

Darsy Smith

I highly recommend HTHaze's reaction of this movie (and I think Michael Beveraggi reacted to it too), just pummel me in the feels, okay??

BGTitan

While I was never in theater, I was in choir from 8 to 12th grade. The random singing is indeed something that happens. I cannot tell you the amount of times it happened on bus trips to and from competitions and when we'd all have down time in class and just pull out a random song. It was also just something that happened in my own friend group because we were all choir kids.

Darsy Smith

Theater kid here, I can confirm, every time a group of us got together, we would totally do this. Whether it's a tune we all knew and ad-libbed lyrics relevant to our current situation or just a whole made-up thing. The feeling is absolutely electric. edit: there IS a cut scene about the green dress! It's the song 'on the radio' while they're having sex.

Darsy Smith

I forgot to add, Sondheim died within a few months of the musical's release, but Lin Manuel did manage to get him to record the final voicemail message that Jonathan listens to! The actor playing Sondheim is Bradley Whitford (for me, best known as Josh Lyman from West Wing), and he is SPOT on.

Darsy Smith

2:23 just wanted to tell you as a writer, and I've heard this from Brandon Sanderson as well (who's done this): those early projects, sometimes they need a skill you didn't have when you wrote them. Many successful artists go back and revise them and fix them up and release them with the clout and skill they earned in the interim.

Darsy Smith

At the end there I was chanting please see the rest, don't hit pause! Edit, hah, I was so sure you wouldn't hit it again I commented, yay, I'm glad you watched that part!

Sian Richardson

The part on the rooftop where you thought there would be a song and dance, there actually was but it got cut. Green Green Dress is the song.

Sian Richardson

She was hoping he'd ask her to stay, but he just couldn't. He wants her to stay, but he knows just how much she wants to take the job so he can't ask her to turn it down for him. It's kind of a lose lose situation for him.

madison alexander

This is my first time watching this lol...I didnt know this was a movie neevr heard of it

SeeJay

White blinds are for privacy but while keeping the room bright. You are supposed to curtains over them. They are not intended to darken the room.

tbeezygames

Please tell me you are reacting to RENT soon

Laura Hays

I’m a theater kid, was a theater major in college and I agree with you. I know the noise and overlapping is the point, but I can’t handle it. I absolutely adore the movie, and I watched the televised Live event and it wound up breaking me. Rent is still top 3 for musicals.

Laura Hays

That gorgeous high note could be a number of the insanely talented people on that stage. My bet is that Bernadette Peters was a part of, if not all of, it. You said she looked like Sigourney Weaver. Every time I see this, it’s like seeing the inside workings of any time theater people crash in one place. I also wish I could I could send you a picture. My canine nephew came running when he heard your greeting. I have a shot of him watching you watch the musical.

Milliways

Delayed response because I just got around to watching this but I agree about the Rent movie. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it cut some of the songs that characterize Mark, who’s my favorite character. I just want a directors cut that includes the deleted scenes like “Halloween”.

PumpkinSparks

Oh agreed! Halloween is such a good song, and so so so important to understand Mark!!! I understand why they cut it - it really would have disrupted the flow of the movie, but that was the directors choice to film it that way. They changed the order of other songs as well, so they could have found a way to incorporate Halloween...
