Hey Luke! The reason All Might didn't make the connection between his teacher and, as you call him, 'Facepalm' is that he changed names. All Might's teacher was called NANA SHIMURA. Her grandson's name originally was TENKO SHIMURA. However, he's now called TOMURA SHIGARAKI. The only time we see/hear his real name is in the flashback where All For One picked him up.

That is clearly due to a culture difference thing, As having a strong back is seen as reliable in Japan so having a pitiful back would imply that All Might is no longer reliable or worth chasing/beating in Endeavors eyes (When characters talk about someone having a big/strong back, It is not necessarily the actual physical back though and can also mean some form of mental/inner strength)

As amazing as this episode was, I think Dubbed had better dialogue to make it even more emotional. Especially Endeavors speech. “Stand up and show them why you’re better” just hits so much harder than “what’s that pitiful back” I can not wait for more episodes 🔥

Very funny that you make the Star Wars reference there Luke. There's a ton of them in MHA. They're currently in Camino Ward, like Kamino, the plant where the Clone Army was made, and there was a facility producing Nomu there in MHA. All For Ones mask is an Homage to Darth Vader's mask. Even the station near the fight in the beginning of the series is Tatooin Station, in reference to Tatooine!

All Might wasnt even aware she had a grandson. I dont even know if it ever confirms that he was aware she had a child at all. I won't say anything else due to spoilers though. Luke's thought that it may be a common surname would make the most sense.

There's a few anime scenes I'll look up on youtube repeatedly. Levi vs Beast Titan is one; Roy Mustang vs Envy is another. Also some Dragonball ones, but Luke wouldn't get the references. But United States Of Smash is possibly the one I go to the most. On a side note, Luke, I'd recommend looking up the dubbed version just for that scene to compare the voice work; it's awesome in both Japanese and English, and worth hearing both.

Huh, I've never actually heard anyone say S2 was their favourite. MHA is actually one of the more consistent, albeit, high ending shonen anime. Well, except maybe the first half of S5, most people REALLY did not like that.

Amazing episode and reaction! I said early on that Season 2 wasn't one of my favorites, not because it was bad, but every season gets better. That said, this is one of the PEAKEST episodes in the whole show!

Yep, that's what i assumed it was but agreed there's to many layers of separation for me as someone who wasn't raised in the culture where that phrase instantly means something meaningful, The dub line instantly resonates with me, to me it has so much emotion and character in just a simple line. it felt like a big moment in the dub but in the sub a little lacklustre, but like you said its a cultural thing most likely. The dub does really well with translating the emotion i should be feeling, hence why i enjoy its word choice a lot more.

Season 3 is amazing, but I have to say... Season 6 and 7 are the best of the entire show in my opinion. Followed pretty closely by Season 8. The last few seasons of this show are just top-tier anime. I never quite understood personally why so many people have season 2 as their favorite. Sure, there are wonderful moments in it and the tournament was fantastic. But compared to later stuff. It just feels like such a small portion of what the show actually has to offer.

Hey Luke, I know its not a common opinion. But this series does some things like dialogues, character voices, and (in some cases) entire episodes better in dubbed. THIS is one of those episodes. I highly urge you to watch if not all at least some of this episode in dubbed especially The few minutes leading up to the United states of Smash. I'm not sorry, Christopher Sabat just does that line WAY better than the sieyu. Also you only get a few lines from him here, but Endeavor's dialogue is WAY better in the dub when he is reacting to ALL might, also this one is a personal opinion, but the dubbed voices of All for one, All might, Gran Torino, and especially Endeavor are all just as good if not even better than their sieyu.

Eh, "Show them why you're better" just mischaracterizes Endeavor in my opinion. I mean, I lived in Japan for a while so maybe I'm just more culturally in tune with the sentiment, but there is a feeling in "what's with that pathetic back!" that's a lot more like a negative reinforcing way to be encouraging. Like, it's not meant to be a purely positive statement. It's like "Real men don't cry! Man up!" in that it's encouraging, but not going the most positive way about it. "You're better than this!" is probably a translation that gets both points across, clearly making a relatable encouragement in English while keeping the negative male stereotype of strength.

I don't think it does personally, mainly because i don't see 'show them why your better' as necessarily positive reinforcement, Endever just had a moment of thinking about how big the gap between him and all might is and how much he's been trying to match and beat him, to the point where he thinks about all the horrible shit he's done to his family over this, then he bursts out with 'show them why your better' in that context to me it read as enderver basically saying show them why i chase you, why i haven't yet surpassed you, you better not lose because what does that make me and everything I've done to match you, its a moment of desperation to me, and i think it matches the emotions of the moment better, In the sub to me (i understand the sentiment of the phrase but prob due to culture differences doesn't hit me as much) After the thoughts and flashbacks endever has the line just feels a little flat emotionally, like you can break it down and read into it but it doesn't makes me feel much in the moment. Its just a preference thing i love both sub and dub and both lines work and feel about the same for their intended audience!

The sub does have a different line compared to the Dub, i didn't say it changed a line or imply it wasn't the original one just that it was different to the dub which i had watched first and was surprised the lines were different to what i thought it was going to be so i was talking about it from that PoV, I also never said the dub line was an objective improvement just that i personality liked the dub line more, I'm not bashing the sub i like the sub also. The Sub and Dub seem to be about 1 to 1 on dialogue most of the time, so it was just surprising that line i was looking forward to was different, i don't hate the sub line or anything just wanted to talk about it

Hard disagree, especially in context with the previous lines describing how Endeavour has spent his career chasing after him from behind. There might have been more impactful phrasing that could have been used but you're absolutely crazy if you think removing all the nuance and leaving the bland and generic line the dub used, one that doesn't even relate to what Endeavour is saying, is somehow better.

The subbed version just sounds broody and sassy instead of capturing the complexities how Endeavor's (one-sided) rivalry with All MIght. I think the impact of Endeavor's words there got lost in translation. IMO a 'thought for thought' translation would better serve that moment than a 'word for word' type translation. Because the subbed version just makes it sound like Endeavor being an ass and dulls the impact of his reaction to that fight. L(This is my first time watching the subbed version, and while there are many moments I've loved I am not exaggerating when I say my face scrunched up like "wtf" at that line.) "Show them why you're better than me" was like complicated encouragement from a rival instead of just... a snarky taunt to win. I am baffled by the fact that the dubbed line reads as generic and bland to you, but I imagine you find the idea of me thinking the subbed version is weak and hollow similarly incomprehensible.

flowers for you Warren. so many flowers. in English Endeavor saying "show them why you're better" hasdlayers of significance and subtext and just hit so much harder. the sub just sounds sassy and snarky. the voice acting was incredible but that particular phrasing..... "what's with that pitiful back" does not translate/localize well imo and just felt so shallow and hollow. (i said this in another comment, but the sub feels like a word for word translation and not a thought for thought one, so the feelings its meant to evoke felt lost in translation here.) (i also did the dub first and loved it and am loving the sub but there are def a few things that don't hit the same. I miss actually hearing "I am here!" and i miss "Icy Hot". Half & Half is not even half as funny in english. but the Japanese VAs are puttin in work and I'm here for it.)

It's not even the official dialogue, just bastardizing the author's work by changing his dialogue just to Americanize it, always the English dub screwing around with the dialogue, when all they had to do is translate what's already there.
