CRYTAC

finally...

Tailmon

If you think this episode was cruel and brutal, you’re mistaken—it was actually toned down; the original novel was far more graphic. For example, a quote: "I found Zanoba's charred body in front of the basement door. Ginger, Julie, and Aisha were lying inside it, their bodies CHOPPED INTO PIECES. The Temple Knights were still in Ranoa, so I hunted them down and killed them all." P.S. The episode was adapted brilliantly; in the original, the story is told from the perspective of our Rudy as he reads the diary—he even had to take a break halfway through because he couldn't bear the brutality of it all.

Mewxccer

I got depression from this ep

Obscuremango

Welcome to what happens when someone looses everything they love.

Obscuremango

The burning scene just went beyond expectations. They did so well I couldn't have asked for better.

Phyco

Years of waiting and its finally here...no amount of light novel reading could have saved me from this pain though

Harald Nassau

I know that is a Diary Reality but Damn this is by far the most devastated and heartbreaking Episode i ever seen.😭😭😭😭

Rem is best waifu

This is the first episode of this season that actually brought me to tears, and did it more than once. So if Luke cries I don't blame him. This writing and animation was so good it made me depressed.

Sai

Brutal ep indeed. Not sure if Luke is just "playing it up" for the camera but he sure makes it sound like he didn't want it animated. :x

L.C.

Bro finally uploaded the full length! God this episode was soooo GASSSSS

L.C.

Dude I couldn't handle my baby girl Eris being done this way. It was too much to handle.

Obscuremango

The whole spell incantation for god tier healing was a book long. Yes you had to read every page in that book out loud page by page till the end to have the healing spell to activate. A thick book long. That would take a while day if not longer to say it all. And that's without mistakes. It's how insane god tier spells are

Argon

Nothing is more terrifying than a man with nothing left to lose.

Tsusaku Cohenat

I just now ended watching the episode. So lets go again.

Zachary Kruger

Brutal episode. Rudy’s black armor is sick! Crazy how much detail Zanoba was able to put into the Sylphie doll. Man the sakuga during Atofe vs Rudy! It’s somewhat surprising Cliff died from an arrow to the shoulder.

Orieng

That was so brutal to watch...

Kannigl

They could have not done a better job with this episode. This was exactly what I was hoping for they would do. Next season will be so good I cant wait. Hope we get to see this a soon as possible, hopefully Spring or Summer season 2027

Obscuremango

When I read the chapters for this, I had to put it down and go for a walk, a long walk for the fresh air.

Tailmon

In the next episode, we’ll learn why the man-god needs Roxy’s death.

Sinbad_Deity

Future Rudy never said that he went back and forth with Eris, I don't know where you got that from. He just said she followed him everywhere, and fought him, every time she spotted him, and that every time she nearly killed him.

Jeido Tengoku

Im also quite happy. The first time I think the anime version did it kinda better.

Vicente Machuca

okay, i did said this is my favorite part, but you know, like one of those "this was sad and horrifing, it was really well made" type of deal, i think i would be happier to not having it animated and just in my memories of the ln.

Jeido Tengoku

Im not sure. Usually a lot of emotional things kinda dont get to me. Emotions are so very complicated and I dont get them (Im autist, so I think thats why). Still it struck me hard, though I dont understand why - not really. Dont know how to explain. Luke on the otherhand has a damn strong empathic side, so Im not sure whether he is really enhancing...

Jeido Tengoku

If I remember correctly the arrow was poisned. I read the LN so I think something like that was mentioned.

Carl sagen

it was a poison arrow, and rudy is terrible at healing magic. there was nothing to be done

Rubica

That last part... it wasnt exactly in the light novel nor the webnovel... I wonder if the author and the anime staff talked it over to add it... I think they both knew insinctually when they saw Oldeus... Thats my hunch...

Zachary Kruger

Ah, on closer look, his wound looks discolored as if poisoned. Thanks.

Yo Yo

Happy Wife Appreciation Day

Hans Henrik Hansen

Remember Rudeus started out as a piece of shit. So when everything got taken away from him, so too did all his built up kindness and "bettered" personality. He basicaly reverted back to his old self combined with hatred for everyone and everything. Oldeus really shows how easy it is for someone turned good to revert back when everything goes to hell.

Kindyh Bordat

For once i'm happy the anime toned things down, because it was wayyyy worst and more detailed in the novel T-T

Kindyh Bordat

I'd personally wished they adapted it in 1 episode and a half to adapt more details, but overall its a solid ten.

Neki

The fan animation part of the diary had Eris being bisected, so I thought that's what was gonna happen to her.

Edge

Read the LN years ago, i know this will all happen, and yet, this episode was HELL

Tailmon

Actually, this isn't the first time Mushoku has improved upon the novel in the anime adaptation. But I still hate that they cut the scene where Rudeus meets his aunt in Milis during the first season.

EienTakara

I remember doing an all-nighter reading this part of the LN. What an experience that was. All I have to say is that they toned it down but kept the important bits. Now we'll just have to see the shit storm that is about to rain upon the twitter lands XD

Richard Wild

The show didn't even go as hard as it could have, you should react to the AniNews cut content video when ut comes out. Which episode 12 already has, by the way.

WaifuRemLOVE

..... did he really forgot about aisha.....XD

Vicente Machuca

also most likely i just favorite this part for all that comes just after this.

Recall

Well we got the eris and rudy reunion

Sébastien Montibert

This episode was horrible, and yet, knowing that it's the diary and that's old Rudeus managed to warn young Rudy, I didn't feel overwhelmed by emotions, except for the end with Sylphie and Roxy appearing in his final moments. But now that the rat is dead, Roxy won't be sick, avoiding : - being wanted by the Church after steeling the book, - Cliff's death, - Eris meeting Rudeus in a terrible state of mind (plus he knows now she loves him) leading to the argument, - Roxy's death, - Rudy's betraying Sylphie, - Rudy's family leaving, - Rudy looking for ManGod, - the Church murdering Zanoba, Ginger, Julie and Aisha, - the fight against Atofe and Eris' death. Only Sylphie's death (with her princess and the crew) and Nanaoshi's suicide have no direct relation with Roxy sickness. The biggest part of this horrific future are already vanishing. Now Rudeus has to deal with Eris, her feelings and his, to help Nanaoshi and to avoid Ariel losing her crown war (or at least dealing with it to avoid Sylphie's death).

Dragweb

He's really not. Luke always has been very honest with his feelings on camera, and it's part of his appeal as a reactor

Vicente Machuca

i hate hitogami so much, since the firt time he appeared in s1 i hated his smile, the worst patetic being in that whole six sided world.

SosoVT

Something that was brought up in the LN that wasn't in the episode, since you were wondering. Rudeus was wanted by Millis, but the magic kingdom wouldn't give him up since he had value as a magic student. So they basically backed him politically. And thats why the they sent assassins instead, and why Aisha, Lucy and Zanoba died at the mansion.

Tamer

easily the heaviest 20 minutes in anime history... i swear i could barely breathe the entire time. watching your reaction made me tear up all over again Luke 😭💔

Fabien

I think Eris' fate was the worst amongst them all to be honest. She's sensitive, and in the end she never managed to be with Rudeus. In that timeline, her life was really destroyed by the mass teleportation event: she lost her homeland, her family, and in the end never reached Rudeus.

Fabien

It was really good. I already know the story, so I thought I wouldn't cry, but this part got me tbh.

Blitzos

This episode is tough but important for us—especially for how the story unfolds from here on out. Poor Rudie—I think if we were in his shoes, we’d all have ended up the same way.

Vicente Machuca

just now i knew this is wife appreciation day, they can't keep getting away with this T-T

Kyle Garrett

This is such a fucked up episode. It's also disappointing to see that, for all his growth, Rudy is still a complete and total scumbag. At the end of the day, these were all Rudy's choices. He chose to steal holy relics, murder guards, murder innocent people, abuse his family, cheat, torture, become an alcoholic, there's so many terrible things that are just the choices Rudy made. This is a series about him being a better person, but seeing how easily it all can be undone is both realistic and disappointing. After seeing this I feel like I'm close to falling back into that camp of people that don't like Rudy as a character. He was never great, but belief he could change kept me interested in him. It's hard to maintain that faith when we see this is how he naturally behaves.

Amberyootoob

I cried at work listening to this single chapter of the audiobook, I knew it would be painful, I prepared by buying strong beer.

Amberyootoob

Dark timeline Rudeus is exactly what the haters think of Rudeus.

2026-09-21 18:00 "He chose to steal holy relics, murder guards" What else could he have done ? You mention some fair points, but this, I don't understand. Even Cliff, a very faithful good, betrayed Millis to help his friend. Why would he not steal it to save the one he loves ? I would have done it for sure. As for killing, you don't always have the choice, so much that despite all his efforts they still managed to get Cliff. The only thing difficult to understand, is how he left his home barely defended and didn't suspect Millis would seek revenge. Sylphy's death, if we follow what was said last ep about Man-God manipulating Luke, is still the product of Hitogami's will. I have the theory that Hitogami just wants to avoid Rudy having a son. That may be why he wanted Sylphy dead too, unless it was a coincidence and he just didn't want Ariel on the throne of Asura. As for all the shit Rudy did in this timeline. I wouldn't say it's just that he reverted to being scumbag because it's his true nature, but just that he became the worst version of himself. Losing people you love, doesn't make you the person you truly were, it makes you the worst possible version of yourself. Yet, I still kinda agree, that it's beyond me he never tried to reach his daughter, the only thing Sylphy left him. Even if it was for the best, considering what happens to his home. Since he's after Hitogami, being far from him protects her, but still, it's hard to understand. What he said to Lillia too, was especially scummy, perhaps his lowest point ever in terms of character.

I'm really curious what these 'relics' could be. The six worlds thing is also super interesting. I wonder if 'earth' is one of those six worlds, and that's why Nanahoshi and Rudy could end up in this world? Though that doesn't explain how or why Rudy reincarnated but Nanahoshi was just transported to this world. I wonder if that means we'll see characters from the other worlds as well, or if we'll even go to those other worlds. Also this kills my theory from last week. Last week my theory was that ManGod didn't care about Roxy, but was worried about the kid they'd have. My theory at the time was that Demon Eye's can be inherited by demon children, so their kid would get a demon eye that could find a path to the ManGod. So ManGod killed Roxy to prevent the kid from being born, and ensuring the path to him never is revealed. Now that we know there's relics that lead to him, I guess that's out the window. My demon eye inheritance theory might still be right, but how would that be relevant now? I can't think of what other eye could be useful vs ManGod, and outside the eyes I don't see why ManGod would worry about this particular kid. So maybe it isn't the kid, but Roxy that's the threat after all? Like power wise she's a non-factor, but maybe it's not about what Roxy herself can do, but what she can inspire and motivate Rudy to do? Maybe the whole point of killing her was simply to break Rudy. Shatter his alliances, remove his allies, and leave him so pathetic he's unable to find and threaten the ManGod? Though if that was the goal, why help Rudy at all? If he saw Rudy as a threat why not kill Sylphie, or lead Rudy to ruin immediately? Only thing I can think of is that the ManGod genuinely has little to no ability to act on the world Rudy's in. So while he can see the future, the actual futures he can influence people into achieving are very limited, so this was the first / best opportunity to break Rudy? I could maybe see that being a viable explanation. But then I think about the relics not appearing for decades after Rudy is old, and it really starts to feel like it's about the kids again. Like the Greyrats are going to form a guild of ManGod hunters or something, with generations of them training and prepping and hunting the treasures to then go kill ManGod. So I think that's actually my theory, a hybrid of the two. ManGod isn't scared of Rudy, or Roxy, or Rudy's kid with Roxy, he's scared of the future Greyrats that come after. They will be the ones that want to destroy the ManGod. With little ability to influence the world, ManGod seized the moment to find a way to break Rudy, and in the process kill off the line of Greyrats that would lead to his defeat. The only flaw with this is that, if ManGod just stayed chill with Rudy permanently, then future Greyrats would have no reason to hunt him? The only explanation I can come up with is that ManGod is so manipulative and deceptive he simply can't trust people. He can see that a future working with the Greyrats ensures they don't turn on him, but he can't imagine people not turning on each other. So he simply has to make sure he betrays them before they ever have a chance to betray him.

Happy unoffical Wife Appreciation day 2026🥺

Kyle Garrett

I also saw someone on X wishing this episode happened before the turning point. Like we see Rudy open the basement, see all this horror, and then it cuts back to Rudy about to open the door and then future Rudy appears to talk to him. This version makes more sense, but it's crazy to think how swapping the order of those episodes would completely change how we saw Future Rudy's appearance and interactions with current Rudy.

AnimeGT3 .

18:45 i am with you here Luke, i had the same reaction after this punch scene from Eris, He deserved that and also where the hell is Ruijerd he could stop him and give him some pimp up!

David

That’s true, it’s today, this studio is diabolical, killing Paul on Father’s Day and then killing Roxy, Sylphie and Eris today, their jokes need to stop, they can’t get away with this 😭😭

David

Luke has always been very emotional, so no he’s not playing it up for the camera and he felt conflicted like me, I knew what was coming and I wanted to see animated, but also didn’t want to see it, I knew it would be heartbreaking

David

Rudy of the other timeline was destined to be miserable and make everyone close to him miserable too, so yeah

Tony Tony Chopper

I held off crying until the very end when he saw his wives

Kyle Garrett

Use his connections. First and foremost is that he has a direct line to Perugius. Ask him for help. Does he have a cure? Can he send one of his squad to heal Roxy? If he doesn't know the cure can he send Rudy and Roxy to the city with the cure? He won't send Roxy? Then we send a team to negotiate. Roxy is an Academy Teacher, and we have connections through Sylphie to the Asura royal family. Plus our link to Perugius. So when we go asking for aid we bring an Academy rep, we bring someone repping the Asuras and we ask Perugius to have one of his members speak for us as well. With an entourage like that, and the willingness to burn his favor with those groups to save Roxy, it should be possible to either have them send someone who knows the spell, or have someone escort the book to the town for Rudy to use, especially if Perugius assures it'll be returned. Everything after his death was entire the choices of Rudy. He became depressed and everything immediately became about him and what he wanted or needed and he discarded everyone else to just focus on himself and what he wanted and what would make him feel better. Zero compassion or empathy or consideration for his own family. Even after they all died, future Rudy's focus is on himself and how he lost them and how alone he is. At his core he's a deeply selfish and greedy person.

Barbietube

My heart fell through the floor the entire episode, god damn mushoku tensei

Zer0

29:42 There's at least 7. There's even a list of them.

Shadow 55

They toned it down quite a bit in the anime. It was much much darker in the novels. In the anime, we saw him go to brothels for example. Yeah he did that , but he apparently … did more than that …

Zero

I love not getting current rudeus reaction

Bryan Ross

Silver lining, at least we didn't have to see most of them die, we see them already dead. It's a small grace but not having to see all their final moments is something. Hug your wife.

Karmana

he could defeat her just not while having her full guard cuz he basically won until moore attacked him.

zenting

Well that was harsh. Good episode.

2026-09-21 14:00 Oh man. Fuck ! I knew what was coming, and yet this ep was nothing but pain... and a masterpiece. Though a tad too fast-paced in some parts. I was in tears almost the whole time. I hate EVERYTHING about this future ! Each death of his wives and loved ones is devastating (Sylphy’s death image fucking broke my heart). Rudeus’s decline and the suffering it causes his loved ones (especially Sylphy!) is heartbreaking to witness. Watching the family fall apart is heartbreaking. Eris’s clumsy yet unwavering devotion—right up until her death—is heartbreaking. Hitogami’s smugness is unbearable. Fuck, that was tough as hell to watch...

GTB

Yes, if only fictional characters were always perfect beings who always make the best decisions, always say the right things, and always handle pain in the best possible way under all circumstances... except that, in terms of narrative technique, that’s the number one rule of what not to do. It’s completely inaccurate when it comes to human nature. People greatly underestimate just how much people screw up (at work, with family, in love, with friends etc). Especially during tough times. And this episode clearly aims to follow in the tradition of the great tragedies, like so many classics of the genre.

Frentzy

If u wanna theorize go to the end. Maybe he need someone free him OR.. he wants to be killed as he is immortal and trapped. We don't know if he is just evil cuz he is evil incarnate or just a trapped immortal that makes everyone miserable in hope someone will come after him one day. You can also think maybe isn't about kids but since roxy can live super long maybe there is a "War" at some point and they open gate toward man god with perugius and roxy is there and she deal the final blow OR she teaches someone and that someone if is not taught by roxy never gets to join and he is safe. it doesn't need to be the kids. It can be a stranger or herself who knows.

Frentzy

Brutal episode. Watch + rewatch just killed me. I am dead inside and I have no energy to express any other emotion for today. This exausted everything within me.

Kyle Garrett

I'm not saying he has to be perfect, but the author still chooses the imperfections, and in this case they chose ones that actively made him a flawed and bad person.

Kino M.P

Well, why roxy was so important, when rudeus would be long dead before the gate opens? Well, there is simple explanation. Roxy was never specifically a target. It would be illogical. She's not the strongest mage, rudeus is. She's not the inventor, she does not have a great mind, she's not immortal, or have some sort of forbidden knowledge. Those are friends of rudeus. And after Man-god kills roxy he systematically dismantles them too. Why? Rudeus would not have the time to get revenge on man-god. But his children does. So that's why he aims at roxy, then sylphie. "She was pregnant too" could also mean that "Man-God was almost out of time to do it". That's also why its so funny to the man-god. He tried his best to separate them, but all it took is for rudeus to trust him once.

にな

Sorry but we don't celebrate that here in Japan and never heard of such holiday so I don't think the studio aiming for that...

Recall

BTW if you remember the first time we're introduced to sylphy she is getting bullied by having rocks throw at her

GTB

Yes, it's a self-destructive behavior—of which there are countless examples. As I was saying, it chose the narrative style of a tragedy. And of course, this is a deliberate choice on the author’s part.

jdoggivjc

If you needed any further evidence Hitogami was lying through his teeth about the survival of his friends and family in Begarit had he not gone... Let's just say the biggest mistake he ever made was laugh in Rudeus' face and rub salt in the wounds - it pissed him off so much he learned how to time travel to reset the timeline. And holy hell Rudeus losing Roxy turns him into the world's biggest villain - and the #1 most wanted in both Millishion and Asura. Of course, Asura might be a little wary of going after him in the future of that timeline, considering he burned down a significant portion of the capital in revenge for what they did to Sylphie.

SQX Barto

She wasn't Lucy; she was Julie, the dwarf girl, Zanoba, and Ginger (the girl who died outside) raised.

Tasel

Right before the episode aired on September 20, Rifujin na Magonote joked on X: “I'm going to buy some strong alcohol to get through today's episode of Mushoku Tensei. I'll drink it when I can't take it anymore.”

Wakuza

why must you say that though now i remembering all the details more vividly now

Wakuza

there's really something wrong with the people in the studios tbh they deliberately doing this shit what do they got Gege Akutami arranging the airing schedules or what

ArtKi

26m55s And now, Broken Rudy gets into serial killing. Kidnaps random people and tortures them to death. 28m44s "What happened?" Asura sent a hit team to kill public enemy #1. But he wasn't home.

Alfred Chow

All I can say it, this is still not the full turning point 4,more unbelievable shit is going to happen

GhostZethAaa

Now It's hard to blame Orsted for attacking Rudeus the way he did when Rudeus admitted to know Hitogami.

mate mzhavanadze

Well, future Rudy never said they were rivals; he said they would fight each time they met, and they became enemies, not rivals. That's a bit different. And he said only later did he find out she still loved him. At this point, Rudy thinks Eris is simply mad he rejected her and therefore, after that, she started hating him, but no, Eris still loved him to the very end. And let's be honest, there was miscommunication on Eris's part too. We know Rudus loves her, and he still loved her even as an old man. So if she was a bit more talkative and emotionally intelligent, maybe she could have even saved him in this state. But she couldn't because she's a warrior. She talks with his fists. She couldn't get through to him with that style of communication. Eris just kept following him where he went and beating him up because she didn't know how to convey her feelings better. And at this point, Rudus probably doesn't even consider himself worthy of being happy in any state. That's why he's treating his family that way. And that's why he can never just be with Eris because he doesn't think he's deserving of that, you know? His two wives just died. He can't just take on a third one. Not saying his actions, like the way he treated his remaining family, are justified; I mean, justification depends on your framework for morality, I guess, but they're understandable. It makes sense why he is the way that he is.

Eduardoff

I felt sorry for Old Rudeus, seeing him filled with remorse and guilt, but knowing how he ended up that way, I feel no empathy for him. I’ve never understood people who act like that—destroying everything around them in a self-destructive spiral—when they have so many responsibilities and other people depending on them.

Damian

When I read this. I had to take a break. It was devastating. The anime portrayed everything perfectly, yes Rudy quite literally burned Asura to the ground. And was always in constant battles with armies but he was unstoppable. I cannot wait to see your reaction to the next episode. Even if you think you can guess what's going to happen. No you don't.

Kevin V

I also don't condone it. After all, those were his decisions. However, it is those people who need our help the most. Mental health deterioration is a serious issue and it affects all of us. Some people are more susceptible like Rudeus. It is on us to lend a hand to them.

dartcp

It’s pure speculation on my part. Preugius—that strong Dragon-race guy—mentioned that Rudi’s magic reminds him a lot of the Demon God’s, and the Man-God himself said he can’t interact with the world directly; plus, we see how strong Rudi is and how much damage he can cause... so, what if the Demon God was played by Man-God just like Rudi was?

Cyber

oh that's actually a very nice (and dark) touch to that moment.

I have now started watching this three times and quit when Erris showed up each time. Too much sadness for me. Reading it caused some emotional distance that is gone in the anime.

In the novel (I've only read the diary part don't worry), it says that Asura never figured out that it was Rudeus that burned all those people. Asura still searched for him, because they cooperated with Millishion. Millishion is really the one who put a bounty on Rudeus's head, and also, on Zanoba's head. It makes you think about the weight on helping a friend save his wife. It doesn't only endanger yourself (Zanoba), but also the ones close to you (Julie, who paid the ultimate price). All this for a damn sacred book that was never useful, what a timeline. As for Hitogami taunting Rudeus, I have the feeling (->since last episode Oldeus said Hitogami influenced Luke for the coup d'etat in Asura) that Hitogami just doesn't want Rudeus to have more descendants. Probably he doesn't want him to have a son (->what Perugius said about naming Rudeus' and Sylphy's son). So, it would make sense he would come to taunt him after killing his wives: so that Rudeus spends his life trying to kill Hitogami instead of rebuilding his own life. For example with Eris. Rudeus was devastated after Roxy died, but just before Sylphy died he actually got his shit together, just for that to happen. And then after the pain of losing the two started to be less intense, Hitogami came. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it would be weird for Hitogami to just come to taunt Rudy, without any real reason, unless he's just that twisted. I prefer my theory though.

Fabien

It wouldn't be good even from a narrative point of view, since it would mean there's always a way of undoing things. It's weird to say because it wouldn't change the story at all, but the author killing his characters just to resurect them would send a bad message. Despite the time magic not being really possible to reproduct easily. Like, this kind of deus ex machina would be Infinity War and Endgame all over again lol. Except, maybe, that it's arguable that Oldeus' timeline probably still exists somewhere, but I prefer not think about it... Even if I wish we knew about Lucie's life. Yet, that possibility is one more reason to avoid treating it like the main line narratively, because it probably wasn't "undone".

Fabien

They did all they could for Roxy, Perugius wouldn't have helped Roxy, he wouldn't have allowed her on his castle, what are you even talking about. Negociating ? Are you listening to yourself ? Cliff would have obviously known if there was any way for him to avoid betraying the Millis church, he knew the inner workings of the church and was more pious than anybody. They did ALL they could. It's totally unrealistic to expect more and I hope you never face something like that, try negociating when your wife is dying then. As for what happens after Roxy dies, he has a lot to be blamed for yes, but Sylphy's death is still Hitogami's doing (factually), so I don't know you're totally following the plot here. Rudeus (albeit too late) actually got his shit together before Sylphy died. Just for this to happen. I've read the novel version of the diary chapter(s): afterward, it took a lot of years but he actually went a bit better (the narration is clear about it), he probably could have built a new life, and maybe reconnected with Zenith/Lillia/Norn/Lucie. That's when Hitogami came to taunt Rudeus, I have the theory that Hitogami wanted Rudeus to think only about revenge, probably to avoid him having descendants (a son?) or something. The point is, I think he was carefully kept into a path of self-destruction, which was of course only possible because of his fragile mental health and willpower to begin with. But still, he was guided toward that path. Remember that the anime episode just summarized what happened, it was rushed (sometimes for the better I won't lie). Yet, Rudeus is still obviously not a very virtuous person, that's not my point.

Warzaw

You kept asking why the Man-God wanted Roxy dead and you can call it spoilers but they laid down the clues in this episode: Roxy was pregnant and the conditions to face the Man-God would come in a few decades after Rudeus's lifespan so... if Rudeus wouldn't be able to fight him then who would?

Tasel

Interesting enough the artist responded to that on twitter that it would have made it feel more like a do over. So it would hit differently

GTB

Yes. And Sylphy’s death actually has several direct and indirect causes. Hitogami plays a direct role, even though he wasn’t specifically aiming to kill Sylphy; Rudeus’s neglect also played a part; but Eris also plays an indirect role (it’s because of her that Rudeus arrived too late to save Sylphy)... and that’s what led Rudeus to begin to suspect that she might be one of Hitogami’s apostles. Eris’s death is partly his fault. Rudeus wasn’t in the right frame of mind to understand her or even really try to, but for her part, she was so clueless that she couldn’t even imagine how her departure had devastated Rudeus, driving him to the point of attempting suicide; she’s still just as terrible at communicating; she absolutely failed to provide the kind of support Rudeus needed (she knew his situation and the loss of his wives) or to properly show her love for him. And her timing is often abysmal. Rudeus’s grief leads him to become a total mess et jerk, but things are more complex than simply summarizing them by saying that his behavior alone caused these events. That’s not the case.

2026-09-22 01:00 Honestly super valid crashout on Rudeus’ part. I say that as a husband and father. I think I’d go a bit crazy too. I like to imagine I wouldn’t hurt people that had nothing to do with it, or that I’d be strong enough to take care of my remaining family and move on, but I don’t know.

Also I feel like the ending future sight implies that Roxy and Sylphie come into the room, immediately recognize this dying old man as their husband from the future, and reach out to him to provide him some comfort in his last moments. Which is just like- that’s crazy, W wives.

The start of real Mushoku Tensei apparently, according to people who’ve read the books. It’s Rudy vs. an omniscient malevolent trickster god. Scary stuff.

I refuse to believe you think murder and theft are the only course of action to take when you have a dying family member Fabien. If you had a family member that worked in a hospital, and a man came into the hospital demanding medication for his wife, and then murdered your family member when they got in the way. They go to trial, and say they couldn't wait for the hospital to approve the medication, and they couldn't wait for insurance to process their claim. Would you genuinely just shrug and go 'well, he did all he could to save his wife, there was no other options available to him'? Like come on now, you're so set on defending the narrative you're not even thinking critically.

Kyle Garrett

If he wanted to be killed then antagonizing Rudy makes sense, but then denying Rudy access to him / not helping Rudy find him makes no sense. If he wanted to be freed, antagonizing Rudy makes no sense, and murdering Roxy makes no sense (since he's want Rudy to have as much help as possible to find him, not less). It's fair to point out that Roxy as a demon will live a long time, but again, if the ManGod wants to be freed or killed, why would he stop Roxy from opening the gate to either free him or kill him?

Zero2Antihero

Just a little translation note since I haven't seen this in the comments, yet: That final "well, so long" from Man-God is 'otsukare' and it's everyday connotation is (usually) something like "we did good work today!" or "we had a good time!" It's most common use is a farewell to co-workers at work or drinking buddies at a bar.

The situation: - Roxy is sick. Rudeus and the others first try to treat her. Nothing works. - Thanks to his demon eye, Cliff can determine exactly what’s wrong with her and that only a specific God-rank Detoxification spell can cure it. This is not a guess, it’s information he has. - They don’t know anyone capable of casting that spell. - Cliff knows where the book containing this spell is. - It’s kept in Millishion, in the cathedral of the Church of Milis, where only Milisians are allowed to enter, and in an area accessible only to those of at least archbishop rank. It’s not just any book. It’s deliberately kept out of reach and protected. Even if Rudy tells them it's just to treat his wife, they wouldn't give a fuck. - Rudeus and Zanoba are not even Milisians. Cliff doesn’t have the connections that might grant him access. In real life, not even the U.S. president could gain access to the Vatican archives in two days just by making a few phone calls. - Roxy will die soon. Time is of the essence. They don’t have time to run around contacting all their connections and possibly (though it’s not certain) managing to negotiate access. - The initial plan, therefore, is to infiltrate the Church, find the book, and copy down the spell. - Once they’ve done it and found the book, they realize the grimoire is enormous. It would be impossible to copy it, especially under the conditions of their infiltration. - So they decide to take it with them, and give it back after. - But they’re spotted and pursued by the Templars. - Their pursuers try to kill them, with poisoned arrows, among other things. - The chase and the battle continue all the way to the teleportation circle. Cliff is struck by an arrow, and Zanoba and Rudeus kill the rest of their pursuers. Rudeus experiences a moral conflict (Zanoba doesn’t care about killing), but decides that saving Roxy is the priority. The circle is destroyed during the battle.

I'm not even sure why you're arguing here. I don't like that they're villains and immediately resorted to becoming villains. We all agree that broke in, stole things, murdered people. It doesn't matter what their motives were, or if they had good intentions, evil is still evil. Even if you're 100% right about them being rejected, they didn't even try, that's the point. They immediately resorted to theft, and when that didn't work decided to murder people. The guards are the good guys here. To give a real world example. You perform an armed bank robbery. The cops come with guns. If they shoot at you, you turning around and gunning down the cops doesn't suddenly mean you are innocent of murder. You still killed authorities doing their lawful duty. You are still a criminal that initiated the entire conflict. edit: though considering this is god-tier magic that's presumably one of a kind with how rare it is, it's more like you stole the Nuclear launch codes from the government, rather than just breaking into a bank.

GTB

Your comparison doesn't hold up. It's more like you walk into a library, steal a rare book to save your daughter, and then library staff open fire on you with the intent to kill you and end up killing one of your accomplices (I don't know about the U.S., but in Europe for this both actions they would be arrested, tried, and convicted), so you defend yourself by killing them, with moral conflict. And cops are the official representatives of law and order, the knights of Milis Church are not, and the Milis Church, by the way, is by no means innocent (corruption, murder, racism, etc.). They are the ones who will burn down Rudeus’s mansion and kill the innocent occupants (including an 8yo girl, whom they’ll cut in half) far exceeding their authority to pursue Rudeus. The Grimoire isn’t protected because it’s dangerous, but because t’s a very rare body of knowledge that the Church monopolizes in order to exercise institutional power (we have a monopoly on this knowledge, so we have power over others; that’s basically the idea). We’re not claiming that Cliff, Zanoba, and Rudeus did nothing wrong. We’re saying that the situation is more complicated than you’re trying to make it out to be. They made decisions that were morally acceptable and understandable given the circumstances and the urgency of the situation. But the situation got out of hand, and things turned for the worse. Rudeus is aware of this and is shocked to have killed humans for the first time and knows that's not right. And the Rudeus who reads the diary will take what he has just read into account to avoid this kind of situation, just as you did in your comment. => Building good relations with the Milis Church will be a better course of action, should their help ever be needed.

Kyle Garrett

Right. So you think on the continent of Millis, in the Holy Country of Millis, in the city of Millishion, the heart of the faith, that stealing from the Church, is no big deal? You compare to Modern Europe, but you should be comparing to the Holy Roman Empire, where stealing from the Church was Sacrilege and resulted in execution. I think my comparison makes way more sense than yours, because I'm taking into account the significance of taking from a religious entity, while you're acting like he went into a random library and took a book worth like $10k. Stealing to save Roxy is never morally acceptable. You could argue it's understandable, but it's never moral. You're acting like once things went bad he had no choice but to steal and to kill to take it, or that once he saw Sylphie dead he had no choice but to burn alive that entire city. He always had choices and he always chose the bad and selfish options.

GTB

No, that’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is: - that planning to infiltrate the place and copy the only spell that can save your wife who is going to die very soon, and then leave without harming anyone is an understandable and morally acceptable choice given the circumstances. Morally acceptable doesn’t mean you’re 100% good. - That realizing the book is far too big to copy and deciding to take it to bring it back later is a less harmless choice but still relatively acceptable and understandable given the circumstances. - That the situation spirals out of control and leads to deaths on both sides is morally reprehensible. - This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Rudeus burning part of Ars out of pure vengeance and anger. What are you talking about? And I find it very surprising that we’re having this conversation, when if Rudeus had wanted to try the diplomatic approach anyway, which would have taken much longer and had little chance of success, instead of choosing the faster but morally slightly less sound path; everyone would have criticized him for making a shitty choice that led to Roxy’s death. But anyway.

Kyle Garrett

Well this conversation happened because I initially said I'm losing faith in Rudy as a character, since this shows that his true nature is pure selfishness. That, at the first sign of genuine distress, he immediately focuses on just himself and will commit horrible crimes to benefit himself. So that's why I mention all his crimes, not just the church... because I'm talking about Rudy as a whole. The only reason this has mainly focused on the church is because you came in only talking about the church. The show tries to create as realistic of a world as it can in a fantasy standard, so I take it seriously when viewing it morally. You will never convince me that stealing that magic from an entire nation, just so you can use it personally, is morally correct. You will never convince me that, once you're caught stealing, it's morally right to kill people to get away with your crime. You will never convince me that he deserves that magic more than the people of that country. You will never convince me Roxy's life is more important than the lives of dozens of guards. She's more valuable to Rudy, but that's subjective, not objective. It's fine for Rudy to have grief and dark periods and to struggle, but there are a lot of people that face death or illness that don't resort to the type of behaviour we see from Rudy. That grief doesn't make that behaviour acceptable either.

GTB

Again...that's not what I'm saying. At what point did I say that Rudeus was acting morally by killing the Church's knights? You seem to view morality as something that's either on or off. I see morality as a spectrum. Stealing an apple to feed your kid who hasn’t eaten in three days and committing genocide against an entire population to expand your empire are both morally problematic acts, but they’re not at all the same kind of thing. And in the same way, trying to copy a spell and ending up killing guards are actions that occupy completely different positions on the moral spectrum. “That grief doesn't make that behavior acceptable either.” Don’t confuse acceptable with understandable Understanding doesn’t mean forgiving or excusing. People are what they are; it’s fine to fantasize, but we also need to see humanity for what it is: full of flaws. This episode is a fictionalized, exaggerated version, in the style of Greek tragedies... but it depicts a facet of human nature in everyday life. But Mushoku was doing this long before this episode. The characters are imperfect and have raised moral questions from the very beginning.

Kyle Garrett

Morals are a standard of what is right and wrong. Typically we use ethical standards so that, as a society, our moral frameworks are aligned. An act that follows that framework is moral. An act that violates the framework is immoral. Murder, both in our word, and in Mushoku Tensei, is immoral. Even by Rudeus' personal framework it's immoral, which is why he was shocked and horrified after doing it. You can bend over backwards trying to justify an immoral act, but that doesn't mean the act stops being immoral. If you steal an apple to feed a child, and get caught, you still will be punished. If you murder someone that raped your family member, you will still be punished. The act is still unquestionably wrong. Yes you can try to justify an immoral act, and maybe people will be sympathetic and go lighter on you for the sentence, but that doesn't change the act itself. When you continually and repeatedly perform these types of actions, that reflects on you as a person, since a person should be judged by how they act. So when I say I don't know if I can keep liking him as a character, it's because of this actions we're been shown. His intentional choices over decades, not just a single night.

Teal3

I am also only watching the anime but I think man god was trying to kill her because of the child since he told him where to go to get the demon eye but they also showed Roxy was nearby. I think he made it so Roxy and him wouldn’t meet and then tried to trick him into letting Roxy die in the dungeon. This is just what I think and not a spoiler.

Razgar_dar

No we are not mistaken this episode to be cruel and brutal, just because there is a more brutal version doesn't mean this is less. This was quite enough.

Stefan Jipa

14:58 yep, couldn’t agree more Don’t know why Rudy started this episode terrorist/Akatsuki mode Very sad what-if, but best episode…

Kigeki

Whole episode I was like "PLEASE STOP! LET IT END ALREADY!" xD

Oh, That's Wild

On the topic of morality vs. immorality (I know I am late), the critical issue with your "framework" is that life is inherently multi-faceted and grey. By describing every action as either entirely moral or entirely immoral, you are failing to take into consideration reality. Mushoku Tensei's world, and our world as well, uses flowery language such as what is "morally reprehensible" and "unforgivable" to describe acts that the governing body sees as harmful, when the grim truth of reality is that being a paragon of morality will not always protect your family or put food on the table. It matters not if you lived a pious life if you do not have security, which Rudeus evidently hasn't given the amount of danger he and his family is put in on a regular basis. If the choices are to either have your family die morally or have them live through immoral means, there really is only one answer. Once again, Rudeus tried everything that was logically plausible to do things the "right" way. Anything less would have been him basically accepting the death of his wife, which I don't see as a choice that any sane person would reasonably make. If this shakes your liking of Rudeus's character, then you must fundamentally misunderstand human nature or highly undervalue your own family.
