This movie is great, but it's also an amazing book! It's really short so I recommend anyone to give it a try. 🧵🪡

Maks Lesniewski

Coraline is one of those movies that uncannily look like they were made by one director, but were, in fact, directed by someone else entirely.

Yase_04

Yay 🎉

Also, there's a strong implication that Mr. Bobinsky was part of the cleanup crew that dealt with the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, because of the medal that he wears.

Maks Lesniewski

It was produced by Tim Burton, but the director was Henry Selick.

The stone that the actresses give to Coraline is actually something straight out of English folklore. It's a Hag Stone, or a Witch Stone depending on your region. A stone with a natural hole in it was considered to be a powerful Amulet that could cut through Illusion or Glamour from spells by witches or the Fair Folk. Look through the hole in the Hagstone and the world presents its true face to the viewer, and all illusions and confusions fall away. If you ever find a hagstone in a stream or river or the shores of the ocean (they get 'carved' by water forming swirling currents over time to 'drill' like a whirlpool through the rock) keep it for yourself and carry it with you or put it out on display where you can fetch it when you need to. Even if the folklore doesn't work I figure once you learn the lore of the hagstone, you can use it in lucid dreaming or feverdream hallucinations as kind of like the spinning top from Inception. The thing that reveals the dream for the dream. Oh, and the name of the Other Mother, the "Beldam"? It comes from Norman folklore about the queen of the Fair Folk, what the Scotts and Irish might term the Queen of the Sidhe, the Faeries. Shakespeare's Queen Titania from Midsummer Night's Dream? The French give her the title "La Belle Dame Sans Merci", or The Beautiful Lady Without Mercy, or the Beautiful Cruel Lady. In the movie, when Coraline picks up the twigs and attempts to dowse with them, she is indeed 'water witching', and her witchcraft leads her to stand on the cover of the old Well, usually considered a gateway between worlds. AND when Wylie first talks to her, she is standing inside a circle of red and white toadstools, which is another strong folklore symbol of the gateway to the realms of faerie. In the US the faerie lore expresses itself with slippages of time, like the Hudson Valley of New York State preserving the Dutch settlers and the legend of Rip Van Winkle who went partying and bowling with the fae in the Catskill Mountains (part of Appalachia, the oldest mountain range on the planet, and once connected to the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, also part of "Appalachia" geologically) and spent one night partying to return and find 20 years had passed. That's why the groceries went rotten. Coraline had spent more time in the other world than she knew. And the reason for the red and white toadstools is to match the real world mushroom of Amanita Muscaria, the so-called Death Cap Mushrooms, Fly Agaric. They give you a mushroom hallucination trip and a really bad life-threatening purge if you eat them wrong, but you'll trip bollocks for days on them fighting for your life and against waking nightmares, which is why they are symbolic portals to the realms of fairies, or the realms of magic hallucinations. Happy Spooky Season Folklore Lessons!

Regarding the parenting in the early movie; You could argue whether or not the parents are bad or not; But as a baseline She feels Neglected. She is angry aswell which would signify that state isnt new that she is feeling neglected, ignored, and from her mother especially: like she is a problem. So something needs to change, Parenting is the best step

Shaunie Girl

Love this movie......and since you kinda quoted Hoodwinked you need to react to that movie.....it's hilarious. This was fun Luke......

Mark Burlingame

Coraline is a fantastic movie. I saw it in 3D at a movie theater/theatre.

Arctic_Hokkyoku

Just think about how crazy it would be to see HOW the Other Mother stole the parents...like did she just go through the door to the real world in her full freaky azz form and drag them into the door? WHO KNOWS

Spa7his

I watched this movie as a kid, and I only remember how terrified I was of dolls after watching this movie. The unsetttling creepiness despite the tameness just shows how great they use how creepy dolls and stop animation is just to make it creepy

Father Luke, I raise you Provider Luke, because he's a father AND he provides us with entertainment 😁✌️

Alexandre Le Lay

Not a spooky movie, but there's this animated french musical that you must watch "Jack et la Mécanique du cœur" (Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart)

Jason

Listen you need to watch the show NEED TOO it's called voltron I haven't seen anybody talk about it in years but I cried at the end

I loved Coraline when I was a kid and now after 15 years, I still love it and I am very fond of it. It's not a very scary movie, but as kid this movie was really really scary for kids.

As an adult, I see it as the parents going through a rough transition. Stressed about lack of money, stressed form a catalog that needs to do well, a movie, and in her mom's case an injury. She doesn't say no to the gloves because she's trampeling her spirit but because they don't have the money. And you can see on the way back, her mom does feel guilty about the gloves, and is trying to make it up to her when she recalls coraline is struggling too. Parents are human and you are getting caroline's perspective. Her parents actually remind me of my own. My mom is very similar to hers and rather than explaining financial problems or stresses she just appeared strict and a clash of personalities. I understand her decisions as an adult, but caused friction as a child.

Sakura Minamino

I resonate with the dad losing his work. Autosave is an amazing invention. I never have to lose hours of work again. Her parents are going through a rough transition. It's insinuated they are suffering financial trouble (lack of food, her mom saying "if this goes well I'll get you something"), the move, the accident, etc. It is likely her parents are neglecting her temporarily during all this but to a child it can mean everything at the time. This is through coraline's eyes afterall.

Airtiger

I dont see this as a scary movie. I would describe it more as creepy

ValSunshine

I watched this with my son when he was pretty young because someone gifted it him to his birthday... I think it was his 6th or 7th, not sure anymore but it was def too much then, he was terrified for years, and because he was terrified, I kinda was too XD He kept telling me he sees thing crawling around etc and I am def not cut out for too much horror and was scared with him, lol. Glad he is older now and not as easily scared as me :D

Wonderxfull

This movie was very scary for me as a kid, its still creepy to me now even if I cant remember every aspect of what gave me nightmares when I was a child.

Sage Nash

The graphic novel is also worth a read for anyone who enjoys the book

Rae

Watership Down traumatized me as I kid. As an adult it is still pretty scary because of how the animals are treated and a few other things.

Aaren YASS
