I think as "equivalent of war" they mean that the whole world knows about it and treats it like a huge worldwide competition (like the football world cup today for example) and thats why its so important, not that they literally treat it like a real war

Steel ball run race is the biggest competition in this worlds history with the biggest attendence of any event and a prize pool that would allow you to straight up buy a small country with the whole world looking at the results. That's why renome from winning this is similar to winning a war

In those olden times, many spies would throw their kid like a servant to a noble family - or even to the king - and they grow fond of them like they are their own personal servants that when they get old enough they would go back and tell everything to their og parents (like they are being ordered to play as spies their entire lives). I saw this same method (or sort of the same) in another anime - AOT - when Zeke's parents put Zeke to work in another country so that he can grow up and turn (without him knowing) a somewhat of a spy. Something like that, sort to say.

yeah war isnt the best way to say that, its more like "a great conflict" because many nationalities are fighting to win the race. the king at the moment feels like he needs to be hard on treason so sentenced the barons whole staff to death, he cant just change that decision without looking like he's compromising with treason because he was so hard on it initially but if Gyro can prove their nation is the best and bring honor and glory by winning the race then the pardon will be see as a gift and not a compromise.

The zombie horse couldn’t be an actual horse as they took the horses nose print before the race, so if he raced with a different horse he’d be disqualified 😼

I am glad we got the back story of Gyro. He had that JoGlow up from 9-13. Also I think that I the same voice actor as the previous Stroheim. Gyro is the co main character so this is definitely the best Jo Bros imo.

I know a lot of people might find the grown up looking teenagers in anime weird but I was 5'8 at 12, 5'11 at 13 and I've been asked for ID since I turned 13, I'm now 6'2, 24 years old and I only look a bit older (people thought I was 21 back then and I still get the same estimate when they see me now) so I tend not to think what a huge exception I was when I see grown up looking Jotaro or Gyro as teens XD
