Chapter 3 Freak Out

Gwen didn’t apologize, not for the accusations or the over all rotten behavior she showed since the fake Four Arms showed up. “SACT is after Kevin he needs help.” Ben said.

“What are you crazy?” Gwen hissed. “That guy’s a freak, we should let Steel and his goons handle him.”

“Kevin is not a freak!” Ben snapped.

“Easy you two.” Max tried to break them up.

“Come on Ben, he’s obviously cracked.” Ben crossed his arms.

“You were wrong about me and you’re wrong about Kevin.” Gwen’s face got red from embarrassment.

“I was not!” She was. Gwen looked to Max for back up. “Grandpa come on you know Kevin is dangerous.”

The man didn’t say anything just rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. Gwen groaned in frustration. “Fine I’ll prove it.” She had heard Steel mention several locations where Ben’s aliens had appeared.

Ben went to his bed, pulling out his comics. “There has to be a way to help Kevin, he’s not a bad guy he’s just messed up the energy is messing with him.” He looked through them. Duusu is there a way to help him?”

“Hmm, there might be an alien of yours who has the power to help, but if we can find my sibling Roaar they are able to manipulate and regulate energy.” Duusu explained. “I think it is wonderful you wish to save your friend.”

“Thanks Duusu!” Ben was worried about Kevin and when he worried he fiddled, the omnitrix was one of said fiddling. Duusu thought of a way that could help but even that would take time.

“I knew it!” Gwen’s screech made them both jump. “Oh Ben!” Her voice was syrupy sweet and it annoyed Ben to no end.

“What is it Gwen?” The girl was smirking.

Apparently Ben’s aliens had been seen all over the place, seemingly making trouble. Wildmutt was one, Ripjaws was another, Ghostfreak was a third. “See?” She was smirking.

“Gwen did you even read these?”

“Huh?” She blinked her smirk falling.

Grandpa Max took over. Wildmutt had indeed been causing trouble at a place that was doing animal testing. The animals were set free and sent to shelters for proper care and treatment. “Well that’s…”

Ripjaws HAD attacked ships and caused a ton of damage but said ships were illegally dumping. “Umm…”

Ghostfreak had haunted and stolen from someone, but the man was a slum lord and abusing his tenants. All his money was taken and most of it was split up among his victims. “But that’s…”

There were similar instances, Kevin was acting like a modern day Robinhood, some other cases had fewer details but there was a pattern. “But he’s abusing his powers...right Grandpa…”

“Hmm…” Max scoured through the articles. Most of these bigger news coverages showed a gray mix of activity, but then there were cases like Four Arms wrecking a car that was parked in a handicap spot, a bunch of bikers at a bar had their bikes messed with by Stinkfly, Diamondhead apparently attacked a gang hide out. “I think the boy might be a few ores short of a rowboat.”

“He’s trying, he’s just messed up!” Ben protested.

Gwen rubbed her temples. “Why do you keep defending him, he’s causing trouble and destruction. Your aliens are being blamed for the trouble.”

“You don’t know him like I do, even now he’s trying to use his powers to survive.” Ben crossed his arms.

“His heart does seem in the right place but his mind is a mess.” Duusu said. He had felt strong emotions from Kevin

“Ugh I swear, do you have a crush on him or something?!” The words came out harsh.

Ben blushed. His heart skipped a beat and began to race. The silence stretched for too long. Tennyson’s hands dropped to his sides before his hands balled into fists. “You call yourself a hero, you don’t deserve the charms if you are gonna turn your back on people in need.”

Gwen glared at him.

“Okay enough!” Max snapped. “No matter what we need to find Kevin before SACT does.” He heads up front, and the cousins turn their backs on each other.

The Rustbucket moves, unaware to the SACT vehicle trailing them. While SACT trailed the Tennysons Kevin saw it all from above. “Sneaky sneaky.” He flew over the vehicle.

“Excuse me boys I got a date to catch.” Kevin had shifted into Upgrade and jumped on their vehicle, he took it over and forced the agents out. “Woohoo!” He hit the gas a surged forward.

“Sir it’s an alien menace, he took our vehicle.”

“I’m sending reinforcements.”

Kevin surged up the road and got alongside the Rustbucket. “Beep Beep, going my way?”

Ben had been front seat, fiddling with the omnitrix. “Kevin?”

“Oh great now he’s stealing cars.” Gwen huffed.

“Well excuse me princess, those SACT guys were following you, so I tossed them out of the car and took care of them for you.” His tone showed he was smirking. “You’re welcome!”

“Like I’d ever thank you.”

“Bite me!”

“Gwen stop it!” Ben snapped. “Kevin can you hop on board?”

“What?” Gwen hissed.

“No can do Benji, as much as I’d love to we got a tail.” Sure enough various SACT vehicles were suddenly on their butts. “I got this!”

Using the upgrade powers and his love of cars, he modified the vehicle and produce an Oil slick device. This caused the SACT vehicles to slip and slide, but some avoided.

Next Kevin dropped spikes, popping tires and forcing some of the vehicles to grind to a halt.

“Ben! Do something!”

“Like what they are chasing us.” Ben hissed.

“Ugh fine, I’ll do it!” Gwen snapped and she touched the charm of Luck. This caused their engines to overheat. Luck was on their side as the cars slammed together and created a road block with black smoke rising from the engines. “See, not hard at all!” She said with a smirk.

Ben and Kevin rolled their eyes. “I’ll find you later Benji.”

“Wait Kevin…” He looked to his Grandpa. “Let me go with him.”

“Bad idea!” Gwen butted in.

“Please Grandpa, I know Kevin, he’d never want to hurt me.”

“Ben...I don’t trust him yet…”

Ben looked up at him pleading. “Then trust me, we can make this right somehow.” Max sighed and agreed to let Ben go, but had him take a traceable communicator with him.

Max looked to Duusu. “Look after him.” Duusu nodded.

Kevin bounced up and down. “All aboard then…” He shifted enough to open the window and pull Ben out. Through the ooze he hid Ben until he was situated. “Seat belts.” Once Ben was clicked in Kevin shifted into a more sporty car before driving off.

“Whoa!”

“After him!” Steel tried to give chase but Kevin’s ride was upgraded and was able to pull off things that’d make Speed Racer jealous. In seconds he lost Kevin and the Rustbucket. “Damn it!”

Kevin zipped off, taking Ben to his hideout. He released the car and transformed back into his human self. “I can’t hold this form long...and I didn’t know if you even wanted to see me...and…” Ben hugged him.

Levin blushed before returning the embrace. Duusu could feel the swell of emotion and happiness. Ben could feel his friend shaking and held him tighter. “I’ve missed you so much Kev.”

Tears pricked his eyes. “I’ve missed you to...Ben...ji…” He relaxed a little too much.

“Ugh...ugh…” The shaking increased until Kevin transformed, becoming Four Arms. “Ugh...I can’t hold my form anymore!”

“Hey...Hey...it’s okay, we can figure something out.” Ben had been hoping to find a way to help Kevin. “Together!”

“Together?” Kevin said, like he was trying to process something. “Have you been seeing what I’ve done? I’ve tried to use your aliens right.” Duusu felt the shift in his emotions. Ben nodded.

“I did, I also noticed you’ve been on your own.” Ben touched his arm. “I’m worried about you.”

“Worried about me?” Kevin laughed. “I’m fine, I’m great. With our powers combined I’m unstoppable.” He flexed.

“You’ve been doing great Kevin, I’ve seen everything you’ve been trying to do, but you don’t have to do it all alone. Come with me, we can travel together and have each other’s backs.”

“I don’t think I’d fit in the Rustbucket…” He said, pulling away from Ben. “Plus I don’t think your cousin wants me around.”

“I don’t care what she wants.” Ben hugged Kevin from behind. “Kevin...you are my friend...I care about you…”

Kevin’s shifted from a surge of positive to negative. “Ugh, but I can’t...I’m a freak!”

“You aren’t a freak!” Kevin lashed out, and Ben ducked nearly missing getting hit by Four Arm’s fist. “I’m sorry...I’m sorry...I’m sorry…” He shrank down into Gray Matter. “I didn’t mean to...I didn’t mean to…”

Ben knelt down and scooped him up. “Kev...Kev...It’s okay!” He looked up at him. “You have a lot of power Kevin and we can hone it together. When I first used my aliens I have no idea what they can do or how to use their powers. Grandpa Max has helped me, but I think it’d be fun to train together. Since meeting Duusu I’ve had to learn all new powers.”

Kevin looked at the Kwami. “And what you some kind of bug?”

Duusu chuckled. “I am the Peacock Kwami, the Kwami of Emotion, partner of Master Ben Tennyson.” He said with a bow. “A pleasure to meet you Master Kevin Levin, Ben has strong emotions about you.” Ben blushed.

Kevin looked between them. “So there’s other little guys like you.”

Duusu nodded. “My siblings and I have been separated for a long time. Ben said he’d help me find them.”

“Yeah…” Kevin nodded. “That’s just like him. He’s a hero!” Ben’s blush grew, and Kevin blushed and rubbed the back of his head.

Duusu explained about kwami, they were beings of great power and could bond with humans to create heroes. “Ben has such a wonderful spark.”

“He does…” Kevin transforms into XLR8. “Ben, stay with me!”

“What?”

“We can run off together, we can go find Duusu’s siblings, we can be true partners together!”

Ben was confused, he was essentially offering the same thing. “Kevin you are being hunted by SACT, we need Grandpa Max’s help, let’s go to the Rustbucket together.”

“We don’t need anyone else!” He said quickly. “But you are right. Steel is a problem, he could hurt you, I have to take him out.”

“Kevin...wait…” Suddenly Kevin/XLR8 kissed Ben’s cheek.

“Gotta run, wait here and I’ll be back in a flash.” Tennyson’s whole face went red. His heart hammered in his chest. In a flash Kevin sped out.

Duusu could see it now, it wasn’t just his form Kevin was struggling to keep control of, his emotions were just as volatile. Kevin was a mess of emotions, he was young already and going through his feelings, absorbing the energy messed with his head.

“I gotta call Grandpa.”

“Ben we should go after him.” Duusu said. “His emotions are running high, he’s likely to do something risky and dangerous.”

He nodded. “Duusu Transform Me!” They transformed and Ben conjured Wildmutt and gave chase.

Gwen was venting to Grandpa Max, and the man’s eye was twitching. “I’m telling you Grandpa I think Ben has a crush on Kevin, he’s not thinking logically and letting his emotions decide.”

Max shook his head. “Even if it is a crush, Ben wants to help him, we should try to get Kevin on the right path.” Max Tennyson was a plumber, he’d been to space and dealt with the Galactic Police, he’d met aliens and seen all sorts of relationship dynamics. So if Ben was gay that’d be just fine by him. He raised his kids to be open minded or at least try to keep an open mind.

“What if he drags Ben down the wrong path?”

Max sighed. The communicator rang out and Max picked up. “Ben, is something wrong?”

“It’s Kevin, he’s going after Steel, I’m following but Kevin went XLR8 he’s got a head start.”

“How are we gonna catch him?” Max said.

“Maybe we need a bit of luck!” Gwen said.

Kevin found Steel. “Not running anymore?” Steel grabbed a weapon.

“I need you off my tail, I’m trying to do my own thing here.”

“You can’t just do whatever you want alien scum.”

“SCUM?!” Kevin hissed, his anger boiling. “I’m trying to be a hero!”

“A hero?!” Steel shook his head. “You are just some alien freak!”

“I am not a freak!” Kevin’s rage made him transform into Heatblast and he let loose on SACT.

“What the heck is he?” He radioed back up. “Fine on that monster.”

Soldiers opened fire and Kevin transformed into Diamondhead. In this form he was the perfect balance of offense and defense. SACT really didn’t stand a chance against Kevin that was the problem. Levin took out their cars and their helicopters. “Lieutenant Steel, it’s time we have a talk face to face.” He began to kick the blonde man’s ass.

The Tennysons’ arrived together. By that time Steel had a swollen cheek and a black eye. “Kevin stop, you’ll kill him!” Azure said.

“All he has to do is swear to leave me alone and we are done here.”

“No way, letting a monster like you roam free, I’d rather die.”

“Dude...seriously!” Azure face palmed.

“This monster has been calling himself a hero, but he’s been causing property damage, theft and destruction, pain and suffering, all across this great nation of ours.”

“I’ve been trying to help!”

“If you want to help, you should find a black hole to jump in monster!”

Kevin growled, turning his arm into a spike.

Lucky Girl stepped in and used Telekinesis to move Steel away from Kevin. “Hey!”

“Easy Kevin, we are just here to help.” Azure stepped closer to him.

“Careful Azure, he’s dangerous.”

“Shut it Lucky Girl, he’s my best friend.”

“I...I am?” Kevin blushed.

“You are!” Azure approached him. “I want us to be together Kev, but it has to be the right way, will you trust me?”

“I trust you more than anything…” His body shifted and he took human form.

“It was just a kid?” Some men said.

Gwen made the mistake of letting Steel go. “Don’t be fooled that is our enemy, lock on target now.” He readied a special weapon.

“Wait hold on, you can’t do this!” Ben was still up there, and that didn’t seem to matter.

“I appreciate your help, but this is our job, our mission, you supers need to get out of the way!”

“Sir, are we sure about this?” Steel pushed the man away and readied the trigger. Once it was locked onto Kevin he pressed it.

Boom!

The blast fired. Kevin was completely defenseless, but Ben wasn’t. He surged forth and blocked the blast with his fan. “Hnnnnnnnnnnnnn!” Azure dispersed most of the force but got hit.

“NO!” Kevin screamed. Azure was down, unconscious but seeing Ben lay there like that, caused Kevin’s emotions to spiral out of control. His powers mutated, taking bits of all of Ben’s aliens and fused them together into a monstrous amalgamation. “You bastards!” With tears in his eyes he went on a rampage, he broke Steel’s arm, before he got shot again, the blast knocking him off and sending him into the river. Thanks to the amalgamation of DNA Kevin was fine, he was able to breathe under water and swim away.

“Get your cousin!” Max said and Gwen used her charms to bring Ben down. They got away as Kevin rampaged.

Ben came to and Duusu broke the transformation. “Oh Master I’m so glad you are okay!” Duusu hugged him and cried.

“You protected me didn’t you?” Duusu shook his head. Ben’s hero form had taken the damage, he had blocked a powerful attack and had been lucky. Ben looked around. “Where’s Kevin?” Max and Gwen checked on him.

“Grandpa he’s up!”

“Where...is Kevin…” Ben asked again. Max rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. “You left him behind?!”

“We didn’t have a choice he snapped. I told you he was dangerous I told you…” Ben glared at her.

“Shut up!”

Gwen took a step back as if Ben had slapped her. Before she could even speak. “Gwen enough, this is not helping.” He looked back to his grandson. “Kevin went berserk after what happened, I can only imagine what he thought and he lost all control, he mutated and transformed.”

Ben gets up. “That doesn’t change anything, he still needs help.”

“Are you crazy!?”

“I’m not talking to you.” Ben snapped. He pointed at her. “You might call yourself a hero but Kevin is more of a hero than you!”

Things were awkward after that. Max drove off, but SACT wasn’t done, they had a road block and they pulled the Tennysons’ over. “Grandpa…”

Ben readied the omnitrix. “I have a score to settle with this guy.”

“Hold on Ben.” Max said and got up, he made a call. After he made the call he had them come out of the RV. “Can I help you.”

Steel was messed up and had his arm in a sling. “You folks know something and I want answers. I’ve been chasing that freak for months, and all of a sudden you show up and those weird heroes appear.”

“We don’t have anything to say to you.” Max said.

“Is that right, you folks have 10 seconds before you are gonna be fitted with prison uniforms.” He started counting but Max stood his ground.

Then suddenly a soldier stepped up. “Lieutenant Steel, a call for you, it’s from the General.” Steel’s eyes widened.

“Lieutenant Steel here!”

“Steel what mess have you gotten yourself into?”

“Sir, I can explain…”

“Save it, the family you have in your custody...release them…”

“But sir...they...who...who are they?”

“You don’t have the clearance for me to answer that question. What you need to understand is that you need to back off now. I’m not gonna say it again, stand down!”

“Yes...sir…” He looked to his men and it was clear they all had the orders. “You may leave.”

“Thank you.” Max said. “Come on kids, let’s get back to our vacation.” They climbed back into the RV and drove off.

Steel was left to lick his wounds.

Ben was on his game, he was trying to distract himself from worrying. He had made an Upgrade Amok, using him to upgrade his game system. That’s when he got an online message. “Hm?” He had a friend invite from Kev11. “Kevin?”

Tennyson accepted the request. The digital avatar appeared on his screen. “Kevin?”

“Hey Benji, I’m not dead!”

“I’m so glad you are alive.”

“Can’t get rid of me that easily.”

“Tell me where you are.”

Silence.

“Kev?”

“I can’t do that.”

“What?”

“I’m a monster now, and you are a hero, we can’t be together.”

“That’s not true.”

“It is!”

Ben didn’t know what to say.

“Please...don’t give up on yourself, you are worth fighting for.”

“Heh...fine Benji...if anyone can save me it’s you...but I...am messed...up...I don’t want to hurt you...something is wrong with me...we need space until it’s safe…”

Ben wrote various responses but didn’t send them, he didn’t want to push Kevin away, and he didn’t know what might set him off. “Can we still game together?”

“I’d like that.”

Ben didn’t tell Gwen or Max, he did tell Duusu. “Is there a way to find your siblings?”

Duusu was happy to get started.

Duusu takes some of Ben’s hair and works some magic with it to create a magic tool. The Peacock Pendulum. Using it Ben tries to find Duusu’s siblings. As they travel Gwen gets more hero practice trying to outshine Ben. They manage to find the Turtle Kwami Wayzz.

Galactic EnforcersBen meets some alien heroes and talks to them wondering if there is an alien that can help with the Kevin situation. Ben is practicing combining the powers of Wayzz and Duusu. Gwen is trying to show off to them. (Four Arms + XLR8 Amoks)

Camp FearBen and Gwen’s fighting has caused so much trouble so Max tries to patch things up. They are jumped by fungus monsters. Ben unlocks Wildvine and conjures. (Stinkfly + Cannonbolt Amoks)

They Lurk BelowGwen finds out Ben and Kevin were in communication. So when they go see this new under water resort she tries to push Ben towards another boy, worst part is this guy is a rich brat. While he shows interest in Ben he treats him badly. (Ripjaws Amok) Ultimate WeaponA strange mask is discovered and Max loses it, both Gwen and Ben are worried about him. They are after some form of weapon but what they find is one of Dussu’s siblings the Ox Kwami Stommp. The kwami wonder if the weapon contains Plagg the Kwami of Destruction but in the end the weapon is decayed and useless.

Grudge Match Kevin appears and Lucky Girl fights him, Ben shows up and tries to break them up only for the three of them to get warped into an alien fighting ring. Kevin’s powers are weaker but Ben conjures a Gray Matter Amok who helps figure out he can do combos. Gray Matter serves as Kevin’s conscience. Ben and Gwen have it out fighting and clashing much to the entertainment of their capturers. Kevin takes over the ship and turns into into an intergalactic wrestling phenomenon.

GhostFreaked OutZs'Skayr breaks free of the omnitrix, wanting to take the powers Ben has gathered. When he’s combined with the kwami or transformed Ghostfreak can’t take control of him, but the Amoks are vulnerable, they can’t attack Ben thanks to the absolute contract of their creation but it’s still a problem. Thankfully at this school there is another Kwami and Ben finds Trixx.

Animo’s Mutation RayThe kwami are helping Ben figure out the omnitrix with Ghostfreak gone, they are able to fiddle with it and help Ben unlock aliens, their tiny hands are handy. Meanwhile Stinkfly Amok is kidnapped by Animo and is used for his weird mutant ray. Ben conjures a new alien Feedback one who is able to absorb energy freely. Ben believes he’s found a cure for Kevin!
