They are very similar, but I'm hoping that ya'll can find some things that you like about one vs the other and tell me. Timestamps appreciated as always.

Something about the vocals in 5A sound more pure to me, which given the song, gives me that good spine tingle and pulls me to it more

Daniel

5A feels a bit too distorted in the vocals and doesn't have the same emotional connection. One spot would be starting at like 2:00 between the two.

I wish I knew what that meant in quantifiable way, but I think I vaguely know what you mean. 5C1 has a little more going on, but they are so far removed from the original audio I recorded that thinking of either as "pure" makes me giggle. 🤭 Were there specific parts of the song where on is more goog than the other so I can get a better idea of what to keep and what not to keep?

Charli Morgan

This is so interesting! 🤩 I don't have the energy to get into what exactly the difference is rn, but 5A actually has fewer vocal fx going on. So, perhaps the things I did between 5A and 5C1 had the desired effect. 🤔

When it slows down and the vocals are given time to breath out as they play, those are highlights in 5A to me. When they pick up though, both versions have pros and cons for me. So it's that distinction for me that pulls me more to 5A. Like, I want to feel you sing to me about the city in those moments, and in that one, it feels like more of that emotion comes through to me.

Had a few listens of each so far, and one go stepping them 15 sec at a time between. I'm leaning to 5C1 right now overall. 0:55 Flourish at the end sounds better in 5C1 3:45-3:48 The echo in 5C1 might need to be toyed with, 5A sounds better here right now.

On first listen the little modulation flourishes (don't know exactly how to call it) on the notes at the start sounded discordant, a little bagpipey is the best way to explain it, but after listening to both a few times and hearing where you've done it later in the song with notes and vocals it doesn't hit my ear wrong anymore. Still since its at the beginning of the song I'm wondering if its too jarring. I really like all the ear to ear bits, tickles the brainstem real good.

I will do a more in depth writeup after work when I have the gear to do them justice. 5C1 elicited a stronger emotional response. It felt more mournful. 5A had cleaner vocals, but I feel they lessened emotional impact. I absolutely love what you've done to the instrumental. The slight automation (not sure what to actually call it, the slight pitch bend at the end of the bars [It feels 4/4 but I listened in the car]). It makes me experience a feeling I don't quite have a word for yet.

I’ve been sleeping in the office, so when I rolled out of my cot I put both on first thing this AM lol. After a couple listens to each, I agree with other people that 5C1 feels more emotionally resonant but I don’t have the ability to my finger on why other than just vibes. I just know it made me jam out at my desk more. I have a soft spot for the original teaser of the vocals but I love this.

Charli Morgan

This is helpful, thank you ^_^ If I had to guess why it's more resonant, 5C1 has more wrong-notes. Like, notes which are purposely out of key. 5A has a lot of those, but 5C1 has, idk, maybe 30% more of them.

Andrew E

That’s neat. I don’t have the ear to pick it out specifically, but if that’s the effect that change has that’s pretty cool.

I absolutely adore learning about stuff like this, total video essay addict. 12tone is an excellent music appraisal channel I’d highly recommend. Understanding your intent has redoubled 5C1 as my personal pick.

Charli Morgan

This is actually so great bc it's the first song that I've tried this with that worked. Been trying to get it right but I always end up hating it. This time, it's finally working.

Robert

Overall, I think 5C1 is more emotionally impactful. The discordant notes are doing their job. I think the line at 3:45, "Beneath the [edit] tree of my first kiss" I think the 5A version works better, the 5C1 version is a bit too much reverb. The only that I think that would kick it up half a notch higher would be some sidechain compression during the drops at 1:38-1:56 and 3:04-2:19 (Right before vocals start again)

Charli Morgan

Tree of my first kiss* And yeah, I absolutely agree with you on that. I made a comment about why I think 5C1 is more emotionally impactful somewhere here, already, so read that.
