Trying to do some paperwork in his office, eventually, Father Yan had to put down his pen and admit he was getting nowhere, resting his eyes instead while he tried to manage the swirling vortex that was his thoughts.

In the years since Ben had left, Yan had more than once found himself worrying about the boy who’d been in his church’s care. First worried about how he had been doing, trying to make it out there in the world alone, and then worried for his sanity as the updates that came in the mail from him only grew more and more mad. Now, though, having gotten to see Ben again after so long, he could instead only worry about how the reality of things he’d been through was so much worse than what the young man had been letting on.

When he’d shown up on that world, he’d lost everything. All of the summoned had, yet they’d still done their best, using the excitement of the experience as a distraction from the horrors of their death, but Ben hadn’t even gotten that. He’d been too weak, the only one there who hadn’t been awakened and even held some attributes worse than what one would expect of an average person his age, and as such, he’d been unwanted. No fame or fortune to go his way and soften the blow like it would for the others; instead only added yet another despair to that already difficult time.

It had led to the church itself taking him in for the time, teaching him what they could about the world, trying to prepare him the best they could for his new home, and yet, despite all of that, things had apparently only gotten worse after he’d left. Ben may have been an adult by then, but in Yan’s eyes, he was young enough to still be a child and had been through far too much in those scant handful of years, where his life was repeatedly risked.

And yet, despite that, the boy seemed to have blossomed under that adversity. Every challenge and tribulation was overcome, and his strength bloomed with it. To think that someone he’d been fretting over could now call himself one of the strongest people in the world, if not the strongest outright. Yan still remembered all the details he’d seen on Ben’s card, both good and ill, and the impact it had left wasn’t minor either. The boy had changed the world more than a few times with his insights and actions, and for all of that, he was going to be a god.

A god of so much, he chuckled to himself, choosing to ignore just what some of Ben’s future divinities might mean, trusting him even if he was going to be a god of evil, destruction, and sacrilege like no other, before slipping back into concern over the consequences such power had brought.

With the reveal, Ben had told them everything, and now Yan couldn’t help but be aware of how the gods of the world had chosen to react to a child who had once been in his care, leaving a different sort of stress.

He was a priest who devoted his worship to all of the gods in that world, but for the first time in his life, he found himself questioning whether all of them were worthy of faith. How was he supposed to dedicate his faith to any who would try to murder someone out of fear? Someone who’d been trying their best to make it in a strange new land, using what little they’d had at the start to build an actual life for themselves, while also dedicating themself to the protection and preservation of a world that had practically abandoned them?

It was a question he normally would have prayed on, but given the nature of those concerns, it didn’t seem right, leaving him to handle the reveals of the day on his lonesome, distracting him from all else and was only pulled from those circling thoughts as a knock came from his door.

“Come in,” he answered it, still needing to fulfill his role as the leader of that church, no matter what crisis of faith he was having in the moment, letting another within his ranks let themself in, giving a small, respectful bow as they entered.

“Father Yan,” Etesh greeted, one of the many priests there who would maintain the church grounds while also giving both faith to the gods and guidance to what pilgrims they would get. “I’m sorry to interrupt you while you’re busy like this.”

“It’s fine. What can I do for you, Etesh?”

“Ah, it’s a matter of Lehie. She seems more… distracted than usual.”

I can imagine.

She’d heard the same things he had, after all, learned what Ben had been through and just what some of the gods had decided to do. It would have been more surprising if she’d been completely unfazed after that when she had been the one most responsible for preparing him for his new life on that world, unable but to help compare the boy to any of her grandchildren despite the youthful features her species had left her with.

“She received some unexpected news,” he explained, not wanting to give away more than that when he was still working through it himself. “It’s probably left her a bit shaken. If she’s acting more absentminded than usual, I’d ask that you let others know to treat her with some care for the time being while she works through it.”

“Of course,” he nodded, still looking troubled. “But the issue is, that distraction has also left her a bit more careless than usual as well.”

Yan rubbed his head. Even in the best of times, she could be careless; he didn’t want to imagine how things might turn out when she had a proper reason to be distracted, leaving him to sigh before he stood up.

“I understand. I’ll go talk with her. Do you know where she currently is?”

“I last saw her in the great hall before coming here to discuss the matter with you.”

“Very well. Then you can get back to your own tasks. I’ll handle things from here.”

He would have preferred more time to himself to sort out his thoughts, but he still had his own job that he needed to do and taking care of those under him was a part of it, leaving him to walk his church’s halls until he arrived at the great one, seeing a few others gathered around Lehie when he arrived.

It was obvious enough she was being scolded, likely deserved too, but he still held back his exasperation as he made his way over, speaking up when he arrived.

“What exactly is happening here?”

“Oh, Father Yan,” the priestess Jossily sighed, looking on the verge of a migraine. “You wouldn’t believe it; I can barely believe it. Just how many statues Lehie’s broken in her carelessness today. The complete lack of respect for the divine-”

Yan only partially listened while she went on, seeing Lehie blush in embarrassment before looking around that grand room and immediately understanding what had happened. Like any other communal church, they had statues of all of the gods, representations of the divine to direct their faith to, with eighteen spots now missing, the gods gone, with only a bit of dust on the floor that hadn’t yet been completely swept away telling him exactly what happened. She’d been “accidentally” knocking over statues of the gods, leaving them broken and taken away, out of the eyes of the other priests and what few pilgrims would still visit as the world potentially neared its end, depriving them of a chance to earn faith from that one location and, unintentionally, a small smile touched his lips for that fact.

“Enough,” Yan finally said, cutting Jossily off before speaking in a low voice. “You might be unaware, but Lehie received some unpleasant news the other day. I know a few broken statues is not ideal, but we can always send word to their church and request for more.”

“I see,” the priestess nodded, willing to be far more sympathetic even without knowing the reason. After all, what else could it be? Surely demons had slaughtered someone or multiple someones the woman had cared about. Given the state of the world, what else could it be?

“Thank you. And Lehie, if you want to keep working, then I won’t stop you, but if you break… let’s say two more things, that will be your sign to stop and retire for the day. Understood?”

“Yes father Yan, thank you,” she told him, smiling his way at the unvoiced approval of her actions, letting him turn to go back to his office, feeling just a bit lighter himself, no matter how the gods he gave his faith might have felt about it.

Author’s note!!!!

Okay, here we are, end of this story arc! Yay, feels good and managed to get plenty done in it too. Confrontation between Ben and the gods, Ben putting all of those sacrilege levels to use and showing the gods of the world they’re long past the point of suppressing him, fixing Inux after so long, and also long overdo, finally sending Ben to hell.

Altogether, pretty happy with it. The biggest issue with this arc is more of an issue with my timing and plotting. I introduced Inux something like a million words ago to give Ben something to work towards, a project so far beyond him that working to fix him could be a long term goal, but story wise, as far as long term goals go, it did end up feeling like a smaller one than I’d hoped. Something I needed Ben to reach a certain level of power to approach, yet also something that might have been better if it had been solved two or three story arcs after it had been introduced, rather than something that would be completed near the end of the story. Still, it’s done and I’m fairly happy with the result and I hope you all got a kick out of it too.

They are both real ones

Father Yan always felt a bit distant when we first met him, but this chapter makes me absolutely adore him *and* increased my regard for Lehie. Fuck the Defeated Pantheon and their statues!

Krae Z Hand

Nooo the chapter is too short! 😭 Tyftc! So excited for Ben's next set of misadventures!

Laurent Jerry

He could remake the arm of the swordmaster better now too, his item was kinda subpar at the time

I'm very satisfied how the Inux plot point resolved. Having long term goals that lasted so long isn't a bad thing in my opinion. It's like it tickles the back of the mind as he's working on something else you know? And it's not like a sword of damacles either. Something to strive for. Not like the invasion where they gotta rush. Not sure if this ramble makes sense

Hellophi

Tyftc, I agree that Inux wasn't played out perfectly, but I honestly loved how long it took, it felt like a throwback, and left me feeling warm and fuzzy that it got solved.

And help fix the magic resistant sword more

I agree, I stead of highlighting the milestones Ben needed to get there it just seemed more like a sub skill that came along with all the things he did in his skill tree. I also think the shaping of him more so aiming to make it a mythic overshadowed it. If we were more worried about him being alive and his state of being i feel the ceiling would have been lowered But failing a mythic and being kind of egged on the face with the option to make him human After grinding out and making huge strides in all of his skills to make it work It definitely labeled Inux as closer to a side quest Maybe if you have been a less abomination and more so a t1 or t2 automation skill And then he could make little basic turrets Or even give bodies to spirits so they can physically help people in the war And just leave the suit at any time It would also be quite the difference from the other machine that siphoned the spirits Them being able to pick people up help build or have been enchant different parts to help them reinforce sections I mean there are millions possibly billions of spirits So magical guerilla warfare with tons of workers would be epic

The issue with Inux being unsatisfying after like 800 chapters is he didn't make him a mythic body or awaken enchanting. That's the main problem and it also doesn't make sense, which is a running theme. Ben is so far beyond literally any crafter to exist, yet he can't even awaken enchanting. The way You've made the world building makes no sense when it comes to Ben as his awakening thresholds have been leagues above anyone else. It's to the point that if Ben was the standard no one could possibly be a 3rd tier. Falk only had to build a giant doomsday weapon to awaken and he had Ben's help! Back to the Inux issue, if you weren't going to make him the mythic item completion which was foreshadowed since forever, he should have been completed when Ben started making high legendary gear around the 2nd invasion time period. It just leaves an unsatisfactory story beat since it's lasted for so long. Same with the God's tbh. None dying or being soul crystals is deeply unsatisfying for a 600-700 chapter plot point.

Of course Tulip is happy with this arc, after all: Ben finally got "killed" and condemned to hell. That was a big time entry on his bucket list for his Ben-must-suffer novel. 😊 And i agree, the Inux storyline could have concluded closer to it's first apperance. In hindsight it should have started later, cause concluding it during a late-ish arc makes a lot of sense.

Pigmonster

For me, the dissatisfaction with Inux isn't how long it took to come to be resolved, it isn't that Ben didn't manage to make him a mythic body. Its that the final solution was to have Thera create him a biological body that could grow. Why couldn't Ben have made a artificial body that could grow, or at least set that as a goal to target? What is stopping Ben from making an item/enchantment that can grow on its own? Or at least if something like that was impossible, then have it be mentioned that something like that is impossible instead of just having it ignored as not even a thought that anyone had.

funktorial

actually maybe thera could solve that now too? grow a homunculus and just graft the arm

funktorial

a growth enchantment feels like a feat worthy of third tier, like the enchanting factory spell

Carl Mason

As far as Ben's inability to awaken his Crafting and Enchanting skills is that they are already really high tier T2 skills, with names like Divine Enchanting and Unending Crafting (Eternal, Endless, eh, something like that) they are obviously VERY powerful skills and the awakening threshold for any skill is based on how powerful and how broad your current skill is. It quite frankly feels right to me that he struggle with these awakenings. Connect felt wrong, but that is past and seemingly had other reasons why it would not awaken. His other T3 awakenings have come quite easily, if not cheaply. This is supposed to he the ultimate power level for mortals that if they are lucky and deeply blessed they will reach and maybe, MAYBE, gain a single level in the whole of their lives, however long they may be. I feel like Ben is skewing readers' awareness of this fact.

blucube 14

Thanks for the chapter! Lol send word to whats left of their churches more like. That was great!

Mechanist Grimm

I do think you're right on the Inux line being a bit of a ghost that dropped from memory but I also think it's not that bad. Most likely forgot most of the details but it does serve as a important reminder of both through-lines in his story and with how it played out it reminds the reader that Ben is not actually all powerful or will face the success he wants with every challenge. Overall I did actually enjoy his return to try to sort Inux, both being a small break from what was going on and expanding on something that was just simple dedication and also show casing how truly challenging some things are or how far some progressed without the system. In a round about way I think it helps lend credence to the idea that Ben is not strong enough to just go wipe the floor with the final demon god because even with everything he did in this chapter there were unexpected complications and problems he just couldn't solve the way he wanted to or you would expect him to. I also really like how those two priests are working through what they learned and showing that even the faithful of this world don't have to be blindly faithful and I suspect they may be some of the first future followers of a certain god with...shall we say varied talents. xD

Marquess

Given how he’s grown, I couldn’t see it play out any other way without feeling artificial. Maybe retroactively add a few mentions of him going back to Inux whenever he gets a new skill/awakening to see if he can glean more info from him? The crafting part would still be the same, but the info gathering would be spaced out further. It would also tie in to his ‘biological body’ blind spot if he’s spent so long looking for more details on his mechanical body. He’d have spent years gleaning info on how to make a mechanical replacement, only for the solution to never have been that to begin with.

Mare Matthews

Hum, I wonder how to best connect with the other relatively isolated Communal Churches and make sure more accidents happen I mean DON’T happen. We don’t want any good, honest priests to suffer stress. We want them happy and fulfilled and glad to be in their work environment.

Kallisti _

@Mare Matthews: Thera could whisper to her spirits and they would be ecstatic to take care of that. : D

Mare Matthews

Yeah, I know he doesn’t know (yet) there’s no one to replace broken idols. But it’s still the best response to the issue. “Well, they’re the ones responsible, they’re the ones that will have to come up with a solution.” 😈

Silverraider05

Interesting thing about one of your points: just because the spirits don't have bodies doesn't mean they can't. They just choose not to. Something about this is mentioned when Thera has the meeting after the events of the first wave. But you are right, he should have so many options available. My guess is not realising he could give inux a real body is to act as a trigger for him to re-examine his various projects.

Gustav Fischer

im a little sad that Inux didnt do anything when bind went blank. Other than that good shit! TFTC

enimare

You can still give Inux a Mythical body for the big fight in the end. Maybe even one that can grow. Anyway, what are your plans for after the story ends. Do we get a sequel or maybe a time skip with a new character as they are rexonquering the galaxy? I have honestly come to love Ben and how you portray him. I would definitely enjoy reading more about his crafting and research. I honestly would love to continue the story past Tier 4 with maybe even Divine Items. Would be a shame to stop now, but I understand wanting to have a break from a story after all these years. Do you have a new story in the works or what can we expect from you in the future?

Sauce Master

I know they can have bodies I meant moreso as protection and also to give them some novelty as well as a red cross kind of look for supporting others A legion of spirit bens would be funny too

Sauce Master

An easy one would be a force field and telekinesis to protect and lift the hurt Any and every body saved is another fighting one alive Ben somehow fighting or sealing Ouan even if it happens would still mean millions dead So preventing that sounds like quite the effort Especially after spending sp much time blessing them I mean he just actualize a contenders body in minutes So a mech factory is definitely in Ben's repertoire. He can literally actualize the mana crystals to run them

Mare Matthews

Ben didn’t create a Bind between himself and Inux. The Bind was so the meliae priests can find Inux’s soul crystal in an emergency.

Gustav Fischer

Oh so he gave him bind, but did not bind with him? Interesting

Mootant

Honestly with the way the chapter for rebuilding Inux went, it felt like a good spot for Ben to finally push his crafting and/or his enchanting to the 3rd tier.

Napalm078

Unending Crafing is totally going to awakwen to Chaotic Craftsman.

Redzeth

Inux should've been a powerful supporter that Ben can fall back upon but has now been degraded to the lowest tier of side character

Father Sin

Scale and scope left Inux pending until the right point in the story and the "disappointment" of not resolving it "successfully" in the linear mode was awesome. Writers write and then they'll write about how they feel like they should have written something else as if they would want to be a different writer. Hilarious!
