Hello, my friend!

This week I offer the Crypts of Karigulon – a 4-hour adventure for Shadowdark using the free Shadowdark Quickstart Rules (also on DriveThruRPG).

Crypts of Karigulon is loosely set in the City of Arches and is designed for convention play where timing within a slot is extremely important. Like my i6 Ravenloft setup, it has a fixed time where the characters must acquire as many relics as they can before the mountain devours the crypts and everything inside!

This and all of your rewards for this Patreon can be found on your Sly Flourish Patreon Rewards Page and your Hero-tier Rewards Page. Check them out so you don't miss anything!

Enjoy!

I'm very pumped to see you publishing for Shadowdark, Mike! Thanks for bringing so much visibility to the game. I know a ton of people have discovered it because of your enthusiasm and support!

A Light in the Darkness

I'm excited to look through this adventure! I know it will be a good one.

Awesome!!! I hope you keep playing and producing Shadowdark content. I've quit running 5e at this point for Shadowdark (as well as Mothership) and have enjoyed everything you come up with. Cheers!

Hi! Just upgraded to Hero tier to get this adventure after seeing it mentioned on a recent show. Looks fantastic. Quick question: what is the scale of the map here? I can't find it mentioned in the text or on the map. It seems from a quick search of Dyson's site that the default is 10' per square. Is that what is intended here?

Micheal Rackintyre

So much packed into such a short length. Bravo Question: for the relics, do you envision the casting requires you be a a class that can learn the spell to cast it, with the regular DC? Or autocast, as a reward for having found it?

Michael Shea

that's a good question and something I should add. I would assume they can auto-cast but I have to think about it.

Cleo Marie German

Thanks! I am gonna run this at my FLGS in a couple weeks I think. Looks great!

Micheal Rackintyre

As a convention module, I think a key factor would be what keeps the fun going at the table. Especially with newer players, figuring out who can cast what might slow things down. On the other hand, taking the time to figure out who does what means running down the clock, which is an important part of Shadowdark. So…I have no helpful advice :p

Just finished a session playing The Crypts of Karigulon with 2 players. Really liked the adventure and it worked great as a one-shot. The clear time pressure of 4h worked great and the players liked it alot. Usually I'm a bit stressed with being able to finish a one-shot within a session, not this time. I really liked that the map divided the dungeon into three different areas. Very easy to prep, but I noticed that the layout needs an update. Not all monsters were bolded, there is no Zombie in the Quickstart set and only 1 room mention that it was a potential place for a relic.

Michael Shea

Thank you so much for the feedback! I swapped in the skeleton for the zombie and added a DC 12 check for using the relics without losing the spell if you fail.

Joe Oak

Wow that was fast! I will miss the zombie nevertheless. Rolled for a single one, guy got turned by the priest, broke the chain and disappeared into the dungeon, only to show up last minute in one of their boats when they fleed from the crypt. Btw, it was not all clear how "Darkness Descends" affected random encounters. Ruled that the danger level changed to deadly and that on a 1:6 chance, outside of combat, Bloodstroke would catch up with them.

Cleo Marie German

I have enjoyed this twice now, once as a player and once as a GM. Both were really great experiences. … the timing element is absolutely excellent for a one shot in a session with limited time, and in both cases this led to really climactic and satisfying conclusions to the session. Seeing other comments, I can add that when I ran this I ruled that the relic spells were auto/casts - my wizard player used the alter self relic to make herself look like a werewolf to confuse Bloodstroke, and despite the adventure stating that there should be no reaction rolls once darkness descends, I thought this was so cool that allowed them a CHA check - which resulted in a crucial moment (a free round) - allowing them to make their escape - was a fantastic and tension filled denouement that everyone loved. Really great adventure - very well done - thanks for writing it and sharing it with us

What website/program did you use to draw the map? I love it

Avenging Blowfish

Been following your YouTube channel for years... finally became a Patreon member just to get this adventure. I plan on running it at a local convention in November. Do you print out the map, draw it out, or run it theater of the mind? Are the squares meant to be a 10 ft. grid or something or do you just use abstract movement the whole way? Sorry I have so many questions...

Michael Shea

I draw it out on a battle mat. The grid is indeed 10 foot squares. I like things roomy.
