V. Babida

What a sweet surprise! Really enjoying this Grammy content, ladies! Thanks for feeding us so well!!

Darya 🤍

I’m sorry new songs?? What??

Lynny Smith

Enjoyed the conversation about the different expectations of artists and their relationship with their fans - very interesting and so true about how it’s hard not to compare when some artists will never complain but then also validating Chappell’s anger and fear. Also her voice is perfect in these performances - sooo much talent 😮‍💨

Lea

Yeah she sang „the subway“ at multiple concerts and another country song on snl :)

j🪩

ahhhhh thank u girlies for doing this :) so excited to watch 💞💞💞💞 can’t wait for sabrinas 🫶🏼

M

The other song is “the giver!”

virginia

Lea

Yes thank you!

Liam Sullivan

I love her tiny desk!! Also, speaking of Gaga, have you heard Disease yet? and will yous be reacting to her new era when it drops??

virginia

Love the fact that Chappell has an all female band 😭and them all singing is just such a vibe damn ❤️❤️❤️

Jade

Amazing!! Love you guys ty xo

Mathilde B

Loved this video girls! You pointed out so many debates I’ve had with myself about Chappell and I truly love and appreciate your honest reactions and discussions 🤍

Karen Valentino

Rest assured, the lipstick on the teeth is part of the bit. I LOVE how she’s switches up her looks. I love that she feels both safe in her vulnerability and powerful when she dons her drag personae. She’s a revelation.

Shaun

Starting this now - I hope you fathom Pink Pony Club!!! 💕

Liam Sullivan

I think for an artist like Chappell I can see how the general public might not fully understand what she means sometimes. In the way the world works, I think it’s actually quite insane how successful she has become being a queer woman presenting a Drag character as her persona/art which speaks of how incredibly talented she is. Therefore I take her stand on the fans situation as if she’s dressed up playing Chappell, maybe after a show or on a red carpet etc it would be perfectly respectable to approach her. But when she’s not playing Chappell, and is just day to day Kayleigh I would understand her not wanting to interact as much. Think of it like Hannah Montana lol, Chappell is the superstar and Kayleigh is the normal girl 🤷🏻‍♂️ - I don’t know Drag very well, but from what I understand the characters are often supposed to be respectably ‘rude’ and seem to not give a f… so that’s where that comes from

Stephen Smith

I was shook when you said hot to go and pink pony club were bigger songs than red wine supernova and had to check my Spotify. Red wine supernova was THE Chappell song when I first got into her a year ago

V. Babida

does anyone have footage of the new song she performed so the gals can react? SNL posted it briefly the day after the performance and then very quickly deleted it, likely cuz Chappells team doesn’t want it circulating until official release but aghhhh I neeed it lol

The Renn Domino Experiment

This will be Sabrina's third nomination for best new artist of the year, the first in 2017, then again last year. Chappell has been around for a while also. It will be interesting to see who gets the award.

Karen Valentino

Chappell has talked quite a bit about Pink Pony Club and Hot to Go. I think PPC is a delightful fu to the record label that let her go. Every time those execs hear it, I hope they think about what they did. Hot to Go, she always wished she had been a cheerleader and wanted to specifically write an audience participation song. About the boundaries - yes she had no media training and yes she can be direct and brusque. I get her because I have a bipolar daughter who has a lot of similar traits. In her inelegant way she is starting conversations that I think are important. Unlike Taylor, she’s not out to win any popularity contests. She is trying to find her way in a very new and scary world that she has been thrust into. She has my admiration and maybe just a little sympathy. Be careful what you wish for.

The Renn Domino Experiment

When it comes to her makeup, I remember Boy George similarly had a face full of makeup with the voice and music that people really liked.

Erinne Carey

Carpool Karaoke Christmas with Zane Lowe and Chappell helped me appreciate her so much more, great to watch if you get the chance.

Caro Ruiz

I love seeing a woman express her anger. Not because of the anger itself, because it's horrible to be in a position where you're angry, but because for me it was refreshing to hear her naming all the things she stands for. She's really not afraid to show all the emotions, even if they're perceived as negative, but in the end the anger is real, we all feel it, and I love to see when people are brave enough to speak up for themselves and be unapologetic. <3

j🪩

also please please please ;) react to her snl performances and her song ‘the subway’

Ava Jeffs

a good luck babe breakdown would be SO GOOD!! love you guys 🌼🌼

Laura R

Her SNL performances are SO slay. Even if you don't react, you should definitely watch!

Lively_Ash

I freaking adore Chappell!!!! Her festival performances are topnotch!! Can’t wait to see what she does w arena tours!!

Lively_Ash

Her parents made me cry! Love how they support her!

R 🌀

Also- her two part YouTube doc series (Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Episode 1&2) may provide more of the vulnerability you're looking for. As well as her carpool karaoke episode. I think at the end of the day, as another commenter said, she was in no way prepared for fame, and by all measures a lesbian drag queen becoming an overnight mainstream success makes almost no sense. I think expressing her anger and fear IS her being vulnerable, even when she doesn't always do it in a palatable way. She is also bipolar and has depression- and I can't even imagine how hard it was so have so much pressure and public scrutiny on you when you're struggling. But maybe I'm sympathetic because I relate to her so much.

pali

i would loveee a reaction to her snl performances + the subway!!

Jenna

Fun fact my friend did her makeup for this performance and everything is 100% intentional

Madden_18

You should absolutelyyyy watch her SNL performance, and a performance of her other unreleased song “the subway”

j🪩

this is very well said!!! and i agree with the carpool karaoke recommendation for them! seeing her parents and friends speak about really shows to her personal character versus who her character persona is.

Nathalia

I’ve seen clips of Chappel getting emotional on stage. Before playing Kaleidoscope, she was talking about how weird queer experience can be when you fall for your friends. There’s another occasion where she’s crying and says she wants to be honest with the crowd, she talks about how fast her career as gone and how she was having a hard day. So these moments definitely exist for her! We are just soo early in her career. Alsoo funny you guys mention Gaga because Chappel did a cover of Bad Romance at one of her shows too!! Check out her carpool karaoke with ZANE LOWE on Apple TV 🎉🎉

lane ♡︎

I would love for these versions to be on streaming. She sounds STUNNING

the mother lake

i think u guys would love chappells interview with capital buzz (to react or not) because she breaks down every track !! i found it super interesting !!

Moonlit Nomad

absolutely ADORE sabrina but i personally don’t understand people who are nominated for best new artist when it’s not there first or even second or even third album… I wholeheartedly believe she deserves Record or maybe even AOTY, but she is not new. Reminds me of when Alessia Cara won over SZA and Khalid. icky imho

Tess7

I’m not very knowledgeable on Chappell’s music, but I love Good Luck Babe - I enjoyed this video and the discussion. Kelly Clarkson just did Red Wine Super Nova on her show and I really like that song too. I love that she gave permission for Kelly to sing all of her songs since Kelly is a huge fan.

Generi Talens

Love this video! I don’t think this tiny desk was the best video for you two to get to know Chappell - I recommend watching her documentary on YouTube and her carpool karaoke that she did with her parents!

Moonlit Nomad

respect the opinion but this performance is probably my all time fav of Chappell’s! the aesthetic and vocals! *chefs kiss*

Generi Talens

Omg I thought this performance was amazing! It’s also one of my favorites - I meant if they were looking to get to know who the artist is behind the music they could possibly find more information in the other videos I mentioned 🥰

Kelsi Ford

just adding to the convo about chappell vs taylor clapping back to the public etc— we need to remember that taylor is very PR trained and chappell does not at all, she doesn’t have a tree paine lol

Moonlit Nomad

NOT bonny googling things during the BEST part of the performance 😖😖😖 hurt

Moonlit Nomad

really do appreciate the conversation around Chappell’s bluntness, however, I think the constant comparison to Taylor is a bit uncalled for. Chappell doesn’t want to be Taylor nor should she have to. She is an individual person and in my opinion can react in whatever way she wants as long as she isn’t putting other people down and I don’t think she has ever done that.

Sarah

Regarding fans not knowing when the right time to approach her, I feel like the obvious answer is... when she's at a signing or a meet-and-greet before a concert or any other situation where the expectation is that she is there for her fans. Literally any time else, if she's out getting coffee or shopping with a friend or having dinner with her mom, don't come up to her and expect her to be okay with a complete stranger interrupting her personal time. Taylor luckily has bodyguards who make this happen for her, but not every famous person does. It's not an unreasonable or ungrateful position to have, in my opinion.

Bridgette Rist

I suggest watching the Carpool Karaoke with Chappell. It’s much more personal.

Ashley Wright

Loved both your reactions girls- you are so fun and fair in your analysis and reaction. I feel the same as Bonny, I don’t react well to what I perceive as rudeness or entitlement, and at times Chappel does dip into those areas, but as someone who teaches teenagers I can understand when the younger generation now have almost their own culture which feels quite different to how I act, which I have to put in effort to see beyond to their genuine intentions. So I tend to just listen to chappel and don’t delve into her social media presence so it doesn’t interrupt how I hear the songs :) loved this- thank you ladies!

ton

Thanks for this. It’s so complicated the wanting to know more about the song creation to connect more without the constant over involvement in people’s private lives that is happening. We do not know huge amounts about pre social media acts’ private lives and yet there are iconic songs appreciated to this day as just being good music. It will be interesting to see the backlash to it and how a compromise hopefully gets reached.

ton

I think the Jimmy Fallon Good luck babe performance was incredible and those incredible drone crowd shots of hot to go are just iconic now. She reminds me of Cyndi Lauper and Kate Bush a bit

Savvy

Oh my gosh I haven’t seen this! Sounds amazing

Bridgette Rist

I totally agree on the carpool karaoke. It was so good.

Karen Valentino

There’s a low res version with Spanish subtitles. I’ve watched it a couple of times. I checked just now and it’s still there. I suspect the Giver and Good Luck Babe will be on the next album. 🤞🏻

Moonlit Nomad

you really should watch Chappell’s video diaries. I feel like you will get a lot of explanation behind this character she uses

Emma Finch

I think yall would enjoy an interview she did right after the album came out she explains all her songs. Performance wise there's a lot of great ones out there, I forget where it was but there was even one show she was talking to the crowd about random questions she'd gotten, like mentions outfits she's worn, her fav Hannah Montana song etc I also would love to see yall react to some of the good luck babe performances the vma one may be my favorite but I am a die hard chappell fan, I hope yall react to her more 🫶

Jule

Casey Frischolz

With Tiny desk you only get a certain timeframe to perform. I remember Taylor saying about only being able to choose like 4 songs in hers. Since this was before she got crazy huge I feel like she chose to sing a 5th song vs talk in-between to help showcase herself and the music first.

Leah Rose

It’s why they should just relabel it Best Breakthrough Artist. In the description for Best New Artist they define it as not necessarily being new but when they first garner major public attention. Which is fine, but it’s still not new. Or they could just have both instead of trying to keep it to one category. The Grammys I swear are so outdated with how they categorize things like it’s time to change things lol

Eevaliisa H.

Yes please do more of her live performances! Jimmy Fallon for good luck babe, carpool karaoke and some of live performances of her unreleased songs! 🙏🏻✨❤️

Leah Rose

Chappell says things about the media and the fans that I can just imagine Taylor thinking “yes girl go off I wish I would’ve been able to do that at that age.” Because Taylor, as we know in the Miss Americana documentary, was trained to be a “good girl,” To not clap back, and if she did clap back it was always very calm and collected. But I don’t think it was always because she wanted to do it that way, it was because she HAD to or else she would’ve been eaten alive and because she had a label to please. Chappell just said what probably every high profile celebrity was thinking, but either couldn’t say, or they just don’t have the energy anymore because it’s a tale as old as time.

Mary 🫶🏻🇨🇦

Oh I got to your part Bonnie where you were struggling with the character and that’s really how I felt too like for me I felt wow that’s a lot to come at the world with - maybe she doesn’t have management and a publicist that’s giving good advice? But also I don’t have a lot of experience with drag performances where this is such a character for giving this attitude for the moment. I think what I’ve gathered is that Chappell is actually a very sensitive and vulnerable/soft woman inside that to put that drag character on is a way to pretend or step into the character to be abrasive, bitchy, passive to be strong. In a way it takes power for herself, she sets the stage. I’ve heard she has new management so maybe there will be more direction to help us feel in on the joke (which I think as a woman I can get but maybe not as a straight woman? Like this isn’t all for me - it’s for the gays the theys and all our beautiful lgbtq+ folk). I’m interested to see how much more she disrupts the system and speaks up in ways people like Taylor can’t because of the grateful, nice, playing the system way. Omg is this a Glinda/Elphaba moment?

justine

you can tell so such of her character comes from drag culture 🫶

Giel

watching Chappell slaying the tiny desk made me realise how much I need a Taylor 'Midnights' Tiny desk performance. Lavender Haze and Question acoustic needs to happen

Takara

PLEASE DO HER SNL PERFORMANCE!!!!

Takara

Although I think they pulled the new song she performed offline🙄

Annika 📍Melb, AU

Thank you for talking about the lipstick! All the other reactors I have watched didn’t mention it and it’s been driving me mad trying to work out if it’s purposeful or not 🙈😂

Fahmeen

I think with Chappell it’s hard cause it feels like she wants the accolades and fame but then doesn’t want the baggage that comes with it. I completely get why she doesn’t and I’m on her side for the most part but it’s also just not realistic or how the industry works. You can’t have it both ways. There have been artists like The Weeknd who don’t like the Grammys and have been burned by them but they make it a point to not attend or care at all. You can’t say fuck the Grammys and then go and hope that you win. But Chappell is so human you know, so she’s still really endearing and someone you root for. And she really connects with her die hard fans by advocating for them and being a voice for the voiceless

Art

i think billie is a lana + lorde

M

While some may find the character/persona that Chappell plays into what makes it hard for them to connect with her on a deeper emotional level, I think it’s the whole crux of what she’s doing. 💖 She’s always referenced her music and art as “her project” and something bigger than herself. While some of the songs come from personal experiences and feelings, the story and message she’s trying to portray isn’t traditionally diaristic. She’s always talked about wanting to be the kind of outspoken, confident, queer artist that she never had growing up in the Midwest, the kind of artist that inspired her and gave her hope that she would find herself and her community out there. That’s what her “project” has created for people, a safe space to be who they are among others who are similar and accept them. 🌈 I had the pleasure of seeing Chappell perform at a music festival last summer and I can’t explain what it mean to me as a queer person. The crowd was so unified, so full of love and passion and Chappell was able to communicate so intimately with her fans through the songs and shared experiences. 🥰 While she’s definitely found herself in mainstream conversation recently, I don’t think she’s meant to be a mainstream artist. Her music is relatable for many, but she’s not aiming for broad appeal. She has a vision and a goal with her project and I can’t wait to see where she takes it as she grows as an artist!!! ❤️‍🔥

Hayden Brice

i think they have - i was looking for it yesterday alas

Takara

Tiny Desk is also a place that highlights a lot of up and coming artists and really gives a platform to unique artists as well so in terms of Chappell performing very “in” character vs other performances of hers I’ve seen - It makes a lot of sense here. Artists tend to go two different ways on tiny desk, really leaning into a “performance” or really leaning into the intimacy of the setting. A lot of artists have commented how intimidating tiny desk is because it’s so small, no big sound system and the crowd is like 5 feet away

Hayden Brice

Hi! I'm a lesbian and I'm also culturally queer, so I feel like I can probably explain Chappell's character a little better, for folks who aren't particularly aware of drag culture and are trying to understand why see comes across as "rude" Drag culture has a long history, it's a performance art that centres around gender play and social satire. In Chappell's work, she is building on, and using the language and tone, of generations upon generations of drag dialogues. Words which may be seen as derogatory in other contexts, such as bitch, hold weight of endearment, and snarkiness is fun banter. It looks odd on a woman, because we are taught to hold our tongue and be polite, but it's not actually intended to be rude, it's just direct. An easy way to understand Person!Chappell's relationship to Character!Chappell is using the metaphor of instagram filters. Chappell the person is in there, you can hear her through her song lyrics, through the queer joy she exudes, every time she talks about a queer artist she admires and is inspired by. But it's filtered through a layer that clouds it. It's not that the entire image is fake, but the top layer is. You don't get the full unedited photo. You get the bits she chooses to show. The part of her she's comfortable with the world knowing. I think a good way to see Chappell's boundary setting is in a similar tone and realm as Taylor's But Daddy I Love Him. It's not that she hates her fans or doesn't want them to engage with her. But there's limits. As a Chappell fan I don't think I'm unable to approach her and ask for a photograph, but she has the right to say no, and it would be deeply inappropriate of me to take that photo without her consent, or attack her for denying me a photograph. Thing is, I additionally think that is true of Taylor. Taylor grew up in the industry when women were expected to cop it and accept things that we, outside the industry wouldn't accept. And that's why we end up with songs like "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" Taylor should be asked for consent more than she is, and that's a large reason why Miss Americana focuses on the topics that it does. I don't think it's a coincidence that many female artists reached out to Chappell to congratulate and thank her on her boundary setting when she was getting mass cancelled for it. And a man in her position wouldn't be treated the same. That said, I can see how Chappell holding herself at arm's length can make it harder to connect with her. She is trying to keep parasocial relationships in line (i don't think parasociality is innately a bad thing personally, but there are a lot of people who take it too far and that IS an issue). In keeping her fans at arms length, which she is doing because it isn't possible to let the "good" fans in and the "bad" fans out, she is protecting her family, friends, lovers, and even exes. Some of the ways people came after Joe Alwyn when Taylor and Joe broke up really concerned me. We didn't have any info about that breakup (and weren't really entitled to that info al la "how did it end?") and people were within minutes of the news breaking sending him death threats. Chappell, with much less resources than Taylor has picked the only thing she does have: anonyminity Personally, I don't think Chappell wanted to be as famous as she is. I consider her to be very similar to Lorde that way. Loads of talent and skill and loves the art, but wanting a controlled relationship with Fame. And given how many good artists are eaten by this industry via suicide, drugs, or literal violence placed upon them - I'd probably want something similar in their shoes.

sleepless_dream (Lauren)

love that your reacting to more Chappell. 🩷 Chappell Roan is her drag persona. The character she plays is a part of the appeal. Love everything she's done so far. yes, the lipstick on the teeth is on purpose, it's been confirmed by her or her team haha. 😂 Chappell says that one reason for her white makeup is because people in her hometown called gay people "clowns". 🩷 I think Chappell deserves best new artist for a long list of reasons over Sabrina, even though I love Sabrina. Sabrina should've gotten best new artist last year or the year before even, with Emails being her first album out from under Disney. I understand that the category is "breakout" but even then, Chappell broke out stronger I think, she went from being unknown to the general public to being on SNL and having the biggest crowd in Lollapalooza history. Biggest crowd EVER, and she wasn't even headlining. Sabrina started on Disney channel as a kid and was in that whole world from a young age with other celebrities to help her, she had connections, she was well known for a long time before even Emails. She's been in several movies. The general public didn't know about Chappell, and when her debut album was released in 2023 it went unnoticed in a way that Emails didn't on release.

sleepless_dream (Lauren)

I couldn't disagree more. As a queer woman myself, she's so me. I've never seen an artist I connected to more. she's the first artists that made me understand more why people get parasocial and "stan". I love everything about her real personality she shows on tiktoks and lives, and I LOVE her drag persona too! she's hilarious, it's exactly my kind of humor. i love drag and camp too, she embodies exactly how this community is, fierce, strong, silly. Every time there's been controversy, when I look into it, it just makes me like her more. She's literally right and she should say it. So glad we have her.

sleepless_dream (Lauren)

exactly. what Finneas said on the apple interview was completely right. "when I listen to ____ I don't think about his wife, I think about the people *I* love" which people seem to get defensive about but he's completely correct. music is art and art is up for interpretation and knowing the lore behind a song is fine but knowing every single detail about the personal romantic lives of every single artist behind every single song would be psychotic wouldn't it? it creates this weird thing where now artists are responsible if they put in any details in their music and in the past they were able to just create art more freely. the things holding them back were money or the CEOs now it's the fans and how they insist on taking everything too far.

sleepless_dream (Lauren)

yeah, they should have TWO categories. 1.) Best New Artist 2.) Best Breakthrough/Breakout Artist. if the only award is breakout and you're allowed to give that to people who aren't new then there's nothing that awards actual new artists anymore, and that's ridiculous because arguably that's MORE Important. and I'm sorry but there is just no way that Sabrina would ever deserve that award over Chappell, even if it IS "breakout" because chapel went from being completely unknown by the general populace to being on SNL within a year of her very first album, and Sabrina has been working in the industry since she was a child being on a Disney channel show as the main character, starring in several movies, and having six albums. I'm sorry but it's insulting to even have them in the same category, regardless of if it's breakout or new artist. Sabrina blew up, she reached new heights, but she still didn't break out, she broke out years ago, thumbs was one of her early hits, sue me, Paris? she is not a new artist OR a breakout artist in 2024-2025. she had her chance already, and they should've given it to her then.

Noor Sm

Thank you guyyss I want to watch this but I’ll be bored if I watched it alone, i feel like I’m with my friends watching it with you i lovee guys sosososo much 🥂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Can

1000 times YES to Chappell’s SNL reaction 💖✨ Also, anybody seeing Lucy D’s Ankles music video??? 🤩

helene

Girls do you not know what drag is?😂❤️❤️

ton

Thanks, nice info

ton

Nice

Louise

love you guys but it makes me so sad every time you guys engage with her work and just completely misunderstand her and her music and art 😭 there’s so many preconceived notions and incorrect interpretations that wouldn’t be so if you actually dived into her artistry and interviews etc

Ingra

Appreciate this comment, thank you.

Hayden Brice

It's definitely on purpose! Her stylist for this has talked about it

Hayden Brice

Every time Chappell yells at a man being rude or demanding of her, I love her more. Go queen, shut them up - they had their time

Gustav Lucas

Anytime you praise Lorde, I clap 👏

khushi04

please react to sabrina and billie’s tiny desk too!

Mayra

The carpool karaoke Christmas was so good. You must react

Mayra

You’ll understand her more.

Mika B

You dress up like wicked love that🩷💚

Annika 📍Melb, AU

I’m a huge Chappell fan, I’m queer, I get her campy drag culture references, and her music is FOR me, but I still understand where you are coming from with Chappell sometimes rubbing you the wrong way because I feel the same. Such a balanced and nuanced discussion! I loved what you said about the first people to disrupt a system is jarring and they are often maligned for it (paraphrasing). And how her act keeps us as fans at arms length so we can never really get to know HER. ❤️

Annika 📍Melb, AU

Correct me if I’m wrong - but I think Red Wine Supernova was one of the first songs to blow up - so that might have already came and went (😏) before you reacted? I remember “I’ve got a wand and a rabbit” having a MOMENT.

Annika 📍Melb, AU

I have watched too many cishet men react to Tiny Desk and be too polite to mention it 😂🙈

Jack

I think part of the magic of Chappell is that she doesn’t give a fuck about what people think, the industry has become almost too people pleasing and parasocial so I think that her attitude is refreshing and needed.

Rubz

I don’t think Taylor should be the standard for artist-fan interaction because swifties are wayyyyy too invasive and Taylor allows it. Even when she probably doesn’t like it cos she feels like she has to. That’s probably why you both find it so weird when another woman sets boundaries for EVERYONE including her die hard fans. If a celebrity doesn’t want to take a picture with you or interact with you as a fan, they have every right not to. You being a fan shouldn’t give you automatic access to another person’s life.

Rubz

Literally!!! The way they were speaking about Chappell in this video was leaning veryyyyyy close to misogynistic. Why would you want her to be classy and follow the rules?? 😀

Rubz

I completely agree with this

Erica

I’m not sure funny is how I would describe any of her performance… there are funny moments but it’s not funny, ya know? You have to get it 😆

M

I also would say that she sometimes speaks during performances and opens up, but her show is more of a “show” she’s much more candid in interviews that she’s done where she has broken down the songs and the story behind them!! She’s talked about her whole journey trying to make it in music, collaborating with Dan, her childhood in the Midwest and coming out, her mental health struggles and diagnosis, healing her inner child through her music. It’s out there, you just gotta look for it 🥰

Shenee Sanchez

I feel like Taylor may not have explicitly said similar things to Chappel in regards to fans, but I think she’s set some pretty clear boundaries in other ways. Her turning off comments and backing off of social media. She’s also generally inaccessible to fans in public because of things (stalking, invasive fans) that Chappel is currently dealing with. Most of the ‘personal’ connections we get with Taylor are through her work, like the music itself, voice notes, eras tour speeches and mashups, interviews, etc. It’s still mostly focused on the work, even if it feels more personal. There’s also the whole bridge of But Daddy I Love Him, “The crowd was chanting ‘more!’” part of ICDWABH and including both of those on the set list. I feel like drawing the comparison between Taylor 15 years into a career and Chappel just starting out is unfair. They’ve both stood up for themselves in ways that challenge the industry landscape of the time, and just because one way is more quiet I don’t think that makes better, or even the best way to do it. Sometimes being loud in public is also speaking up for others in the room and shaming men can be a powerful tool to wield. Did we not all yell “fuck the patriarchy” at the top of our lungs during ATW10?? I think we all got crowns, though Chappel’s might actually be a tiara.

Lisa

I understood what you said about Chappel, but I always try to remind myself that just because something is uncomfortable doesn't mean it's wrong (not that I thought you were saying that it is wrong, of course), it can also just mean that it's new.

Sean

Calling pink pony club unserious is sending me lol, I cry to that song almost every time I hear it Totally agree about Red Wine Supernova, that song is lead single worthy

Amy

100% agree - there are so many great videos out there where she explains more of the meaning behind her music/outfit/persona that I wish they'd watch!

jennie

I think you should definitely react to the snl performance but also react to “ the subway” in the same video! They both are unreleased songs that are amaazing

jennie

ALSO plllease react to sabrina’s tiny desk! Its SO GOOD

Wanda🖤

it’s really hard for me to process how i feel about your discussion about boundaries. i think you are right and you are carrying internalized misogyny and perhaps do not understand the queer community. like i dont know just me personally it really rubbed me the wrong way saying chappell is ungrateful and comparing her to taylor when taylor was a young child under scott when she rose to fame and she didn’t start talking back for years and is completely unfair to compare a media trained woman who’s been in the spotlight for 18 years and a queer woman who rose to fame basically overnight and it’s absolutely no woman’s job famous or not has to be palatable for anyone when they feel disrespected. i appreciate emily’s openness. just really disheartening to see this is how you feel about women and i hope it starts a discussion internally about why you feel so uncomfortable for a woman standing up for herself.

sarah

in terms of best new artist, i think it should go to chappell. i understand both sabrina and chappell are elligible, but sabrina had already seen massive commercial success before releasing short n' sweet (feather, nonsense.) chappell's success felt more from the ground up this year, and therefore felt more like a breakthrough which is what the award is for

Lisa

Guys, I'm really glad we're able to have open conversations about this, but let's remember that Bon & Em were just reflecting on their feelings and they said themselves that they had more thinking to do about the subject. Obviously, we're allowed to share our own views on it, otherwise, they wouldn't have posted the video, but I think we should make sure everyone can analyse their own feelings about subjects without being afraid to share them. People can have thoughts/feelings they themselves don't necessarily always agree with (I do at least) which is why I think it's very healthy to analyse and examine your thought process, so you can develop your opinion. I'm glad the girls felt that they could share that process with us, even though I don't agree with everything they said, and I hope they feel comfortable enough to continue to share in the future.

Moonlit Nomad

great take, everyone should read this

Gabi

Chappell has provided representation through her music that I never felt like I had before—poppy, joyful, emotionally raw songs about queerness. I obv listened to other queer artists before Chappell, but something about Chappell made me feel like, if she’s cool then I can be cool too! It’s definitely hard to explain to people who can’t relate. I think Sabrina has provided queer representation too with lipstick marks all over her body and kissing girls in her performances and music videos. But Chappell has done something special in my opinion, she showed me I can be and love super graphic ultra modern girl like her. It’s been helpful to have her to get through my early 20s identity crisis era.

Nippy

Appreciate the conversation. Chappell is so refreshing to me, like thats a person. Someone thats rather wrong than insincere

Lucie S

I really love the discussions you guys have in your videos ! I'm glad you feel safe enough on this plateform to be honest I really feel the same way as Bonny your videos always feel like hearing friends talk and I love that !

Sophie

Yes this!! For big pop artists like Taylor, post Malone, etc. Tiny desk is a way to perform authenticity and intimacy in a way they don't usually get to do. For smaller artists like chappell (at the time that this was filmed, she was much less well known), tiny desk is a chance to perform their biggest songs in their typical persona because it's a big show and they can gain basic recognition from it.

MsWaldo2009

Came to the comment section to look for this one. People need to understand drag culture to understand Chappel! Thank you ♥️

Dorka

please react to the SNL performance!!!

Dorka

I really disagree that Billie is the new Lorde. They have such different vibes and just because they blew up young doesn't make them similar. their style, music, approach to fame etc is so so different. I love lorde but I also dislike billie.

Dorka

Also many artists thanked Chapell for standing up and voicing those things about fan culture they are scared to say. So just because Taylor doesn't do it which she absolutely should. She shouldn't be the standard, she cultivated herself the parasocial paradigm.

Erica

The difference is Taylor needs the validation from fans reacting to her presence and wanting to take photos and clap for her. Chappel doesn’t need the validation in that way. So it’s jarring for her to have people bombard her. Think about the time on a late night talk show Taylor talked about everyone clapping for Kevin when he walked in the room. Obviously Taylor is Kevin in that story. She needs people to keep up the same excited cheering every time she walks in the room. She’s tinkerbell.

Gabrielle

The fact that Lana hasn’t won a Grammy is unbelievable. I think it proves the point that awards don’t equate success. As a classical / jazz musician, I feel that Chappell Roan is easily one of the most influential artists ever. She is so unlike anyone else, a total icon. She is so vulnerable in her music but in such a fun way. I don’t like comparing artists, and I get that it’s so hard not to! Each artist is their own expression of their emotions and they’re special in their own ways. For me Chappell is just so brave with her gender expression and emotional expression in a really fresh way

Lan

Yes! Really loved that one! The internview was done with Zane Lowe and it touches a lot more on her thoughts and experiences in making music.

Bridgette Rist

And singing with her parents in the car. So sweet.

Hannah Elisabeth

Please react to Doechii's tiny desk! She's also up for the best new artist grammy and her tiny desk is incredible - female rap meets musical theatre meets jazz!

Lefty

Idk how to phrase what I'm thinking here but I feel like you say "if you guys are interested" a lot, when really I'm just like react to anything (obviously within what makes sense for you), I'll probably be interested and I think most people will be happy with new content

Jenna

Emily looks like a little Folklore fairy, I love the dress and headband with your hair!

bri

You should react to Doechii's tiny desk! It is the best tiny desk I've ever watched! She's up for a few Grammys too, and she is just so talented.

Hayden Brice

This! That "God! What have you done!?" Is her mother telling her she's going to hell. It's about the push and pull of queer joy and being homophobia. It's deeply serious. Queer kids get disowned by their relatives all the time. The song is fun and camp, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have weight

Hayden Brice

So many of Chappells songs have had a moment that's come and gone to various degrees! I found her when Casual was getting her flowers. But before that was PPC. After Casual was RWS. Then it was Hot to Go! Now we're cycled back to PPC haha I'm waiting on folks to discover After Midnight or Naked in Manhatten, it's gonna happen

Gone Girl

Chappell makes more interesting music than SC

Louise

I LOVE that chappell is setting boundaries! I think as women we find it incredibly hard to set boundaries and be direct which is why we may feel uncomfortable to see her doing it because it's against our social norms but it absolutely shouldn't be. I think her creating her drag persona was perfect to show that she is a performer AND a separate human who wants to live a normal life and we have to respect that. I also feel that being a part of the queer community gives u a different perspective on her as her songs (especially pink pony club) are sooo deep and vulnerable and her strength in being that vulnerable in her writing whilst maintaining her boundaries AND advocating for others shows what an amazing person she is and I think we should all strive to have her outlook. just some thoughts, no hate :)

Keri 🫶🏻

jeez I wish I could dislike some of these comments

maya zutra

Excited for another superior year with you girlies Keep doing you 💛

Wanda🖤

what , comments calling out blatent misogyny ? again just because it’s internalized doesn’t mean it’s okay ☺️ i really do think they’re learning but suggesting that a young woman artist is being ungrateful because she doesn’t want to be abused by the system and parasocial relationships is just not with the times .

Keri 🫶🏻

Going on a coke rant and throwing around labels like misogyny because someone criticized your favorite artist is crazy. Especially since YOU PAY to hear their opinion. Unsubscribe button is right there.

Laurie

Bonny, I feel like the carpool karaoke episode apple did with chappell for Christmas would help you see a new side to who she is as a person, it was filmed in Missouri and we see her with her parents and friends, very wholesome and more personal

Brittany Diamond

Amazing, detailed, thoughtful conversation guys. I love dissecting why we're drawn to certain art and artists more than others so this was catnip for me.

Taylor Wiens

I definitely think you guys should watch Chappell’s carpool karaoke. I think that video would help you understand her a lot more! And her parents are in it which is super cute. She also has done an interview where she talks about her whole album and meaning behind each song and the writing process of each song: https://youtu.be/PF96UOuIHw0?si=HAau-k8zE92VBT1m And yes! Please react to her SNL performance!!

Tessy

I think that for people to understand someone like Chappell it is so important to have an understanding of drag culture. Bonny I totally understand what you said about not feeling a connection to Chappell and how she doesn't show enough vulnerability, but I think it's important to understand that drag *is* vulnerable. For queer people who could not be themselves in public historically, it was deeply vulnerable to dress in drag, play with gender and sexuality in that way, and have that side of you be so on display (rather than masking your queerness by dressing "normally" and appearing straight). At the same time, you get to take on a character that is deeply, openly proud of being queer in an oppressive world, and while in that costume, you get to be brave and unapologetic (and yes, "bitchy") about who you are. It is incredibly freeing and exciting to play a character you unfortunately don't get to be all the time, which is in itself a deeply vulnerable experience. (Not to say that you girls called her bitchy of course - just commentary on how Chappell has been perceived over the last year!) Love you girls and wanted to comment on the discourse happening here - Chappell represents queer culture in a way that is so refreshing, but undoubtedly off-putting to lots of straight people who are not used to it haha. She is not "classy" and does not want to be. She just wants to be her unapologetic queer self no matter what anyone else says, and as a queer woman from a conservative world I absolutely adore her and do not find her drag character to make her any less vulnerable - in fact it is just the opposite.

Curt Decker

Yes watch the SNL one :) xoxoxo

Jessica Nelson

Since yall reacted Halseys latest album I would love if you reacted to her album manic the 5th anniversary was recently it’s such a good album and probably her most popular one

rosie

Bonny, dancing at the gay club is not silly. Many queer people risk their lives to gather in queer spaces, sometimes a gay club is the only place a queer person can be free and truly themselves. Think about all thr queer people who don't live in liberal communities. Or even places where being queer is against the law. This is why Chappell is important in the music industry and pop culture landscape today. Very disappointed by this video and the lack of research you have done about drag, the meaning behind chappells music and persona. Especially considering she is from the Midwest and the current political climate in America and what that means for queer people. I'm considering un subscribing because of the lack of diversity in the music you go out of your way to understand. Not everyone is a straight white female. I want to watch creators who understand context, nuance outside of their own experiences. This is why we listen to music, because it unites us and changes culture.

Carly

I had never considered how drag may be vulnerable - thank you for the detailed insight!

rosie

I also want to add that her persona is supposed to make you uncomfortable. An out spoken, opinionated queer woman who stands her ground is supposed yo challenge people and make you think. Historically outspoken women who set clear boundaries are called all sorts of things from the patriarchy. And the patriarchy hates queer women unless they are fetishising them. I really dislike how you mentioned she's not real....or authentic. Chappell's music is so honest, raw and so vulnerable. Just because you didn't research the experience she is actually singing about doesn't mean she is any less real, raw or honest than someone like Sabrina or taylor.

Cohan Russell

Yes please react to her SNL Performance!! It’s so fresh and new

Sara

really love the video and I kind of get what you mean, but I also understand the people who are a bit disappointed because of your seemingly lack of self reflection in terms of misogyny and lack of considering Chappell as a queer icon and what she means for the queer community. also that you guys just call her whole band „female“ just shows that you maybe have to learn more about the whole queer and that there are more than two gender. and I get why you like it more when people are more vulnerable in giving you the backstory of the songs but some words you used where maybe a bit to harsh considering the state of queer rights and queer safety. I know that written critic often comes of more harsh, so I hope you two dont get it the wrong way. I would love to see your reaction the other Chappell performances. just see it as an opportunity to learn more about all of that 🩷

Nancy

The SNL performance is ESSENTIAL. It's a whole new sound and vibe from chappell!! Love hearing you guys reflect and talk things through ❤️

Lia

I feel like what Bonny was trying to say is that Chappell to her isn’t as relatable as Taylor so she simply does not connect to her music as she does with Taylor’s , but at the same time she likes some songs and appreciates her talent, her vocals and her stage presence.

Emma

I feel Like it really comes through that you like her music a lot and you are obviously noticing her talent. However i will say, that I understand the Point of some comments. I feel Like you guys know so much about Taylor and relatively less about other Artists. That is Not wrong, but that Taylor Knowledge just isnt transferable to Most Artists. I feel Like you guys geht Taylor and Sabrina so naturaly because they Both are obviously talented, but also white and privileged. To know that fact doesnt take away from anything they are doing. Even for Olivia, you guys Interpretate a lot of her Songs as Young, Partly because there is so much insecurity in them. I feel Like with her you shouldnt forget the fact that she is a half asian Girl who probably Had a different experience with Western Beauty Standards than you guys did. Chapells Songs are Not written to please white, straight peoples Needs. Its Great that there are popular Songwriters from diverse groups, so anyone can feel presented und can Relate to Songs. And anyone, regardless of that can enjoy the music. I also dont know much about the Culture in Australia, but from what I See i feel Like its relativly Open towards different groups of people. That just isnt the case in Most Places of the world, especially not in the midwest from america and especially Not right now.

Sabina Vitola

Hey girls! I’ve been thinking about how you can turn the negative comments that you guys have gotten on your recent reactions into something positive and this is what I’ve come up with!! : I find that often the things people here are complaining about is you guys overlooking certain aspects of an artist that are very obvious to the fandom but are often non-obvious to the outside viewer. Something fun you could try is to have an informative conversation about the artist you’re planning to react to with someone who already loves them! (Think of what Brea did for you guys when you reacted to the Noah Kahan album [which I ADORED as a Noah stan I should add]). This could be a little research session that doesn’t involve looking on the internet (since I remember you said in a recent video you don’t like looking because it would taint your own opinion) and that connects you to your audience even more! Obviously if there’s someone in your life who you know already loves an artist you could chat with them (and maybe even add some clips or invite them to sit behind the camera as the fandom “representative” lol) OR you could always open up a chat here on discord or invite someone from your audience to give you that perspective. I think this could be a really awesome way for you guys to learn a little more of the nuances that make artists, and our connection to them, so lovely (nuances like the ones that you guys love about Taylor so much). I would hate to see you guys scared to share your opinions because you worry you’re offending people for things you didn’t even know were sensitive. Also an added bonus is your friend “representative” wont spoil anything you might see in your reaction because they know your job is to come in blind… I hope this is helpful! :)) love you guys💛 sending a hug 🫂

Sabina Vitola

Like my comment if you think this could be a good idea for the girls so they see it!! 🫂🫂

chatsandreacts

Totally understand and thank you for your honesty and feedback! Our comparisons between Taylor and other artists aren’t always necessarily us trying to imply that we think everyone should be more like her, I think for us it just feels like the natural comparison to make because we know so much about Taylor and so relating back to her helps us understand what others are doing differently, and perhaps what we do or don’t like. It’s like our way of making sense of the music world. We are sorry if sometimes this is uncalled for or comes off the wrong way

chatsandreacts

Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing a bit more about Chappell’s approach to her work and what it means to you 🥰 it really helps us understand her more, particularly as it doesn’t always click for us the magnitude of what she is doing and what it means to people when we are not in the queer community!

M

Great idea!!!!

chatsandreacts

Thank you SO much for your comment and info, it’s so helpful to understand Chappell on a better level and through your lens. Particularly everything around what drag represents!

Hayley

Bonny, you were just explaining how you feel towards Chappell’s personality and her music. You don’t have to apologize for that. Just because someone is not familiar with a certain community which an artist is a member of, doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to share their thoughts when it comes to their personal connection with that artist. I’m someone who can’t relate to all of Chappell or all of her songs, yet I still love her music. Have I done the research on every single thing she represents? No. I don’t have to. And neither do the girls.

chatsandreacts

You are absolutely correct. We didn’t mean to imply that Taylor *should* be the standard, as we all know what has happened to Taylor throughout her career which one could argue is a result of being so open. We understand that being uncomfortable in the face of women setting boundaries is rooted in misogyny and ‘the way things have always been’, and that’s what we were trying to discuss openly. We are really sorry if this came off the wrong way.

chatsandreacts

Yes absolutely, this was the basis of our conversation - someone doing something new in society always makes people stop in their tracks and brings up discomfort, and it is for us as individuals to evaluate why we feel uncomfortable and assess if those feelings are misplaced!

chatsandreacts

Thank you so much for your comment, we certainly have not understood the magnitude of what drag represents and it’s really helpful to have this info when approaching our understanding of Chappell! 💓

Floran

WE LOVE YOU !! 2025 LETS GOO!! 🩷🩵

Floran

Bro what

mieke

completely agree, hayley! we can all learn and fathom as we go 🫶🏻

Sabina Vitola

Totally!! As a huge Noah fan I felt like they did the album such justice because of all the little details and fun facts that they pointed out throughout it

Floran

*standing ovation*

MarkH

I can appreciate Chappell's songs, her incredible voice, and her bravery, but, perhaps like you, I can't get into the artificiality of it all. I always had a similar problem with Lady Gaga. But let me recommend the Carpool Karaoke Christmas with Zane Lowe; he talks to Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, and Chappell, and they all seem much more like real people. Well, maybe Dua seems like a very rich person, but still real. He visits Chappell in Missouri, and really it is pretty awesome. Highly recommend!

M

Thank you for taking the time to read my comment!! Loved the video and excited that you’re reacting to more Chappell 🥰

Michael

Chappell did an episode of The Comment Section w Drew Afualo (video podcast on Spotify) that’s an hour of them chatting in a casual setting. Y’all might enjoy it.

Hayden Brice

You're very welcome! 💕 always happy to have healthy open dialogues about discourse! We don't gatekeep here x

chatsandreacts

Hey Rosie, thank you for your comment. I think there is a lot for me to learn and take from your points. I just watched back the video and can totally see how you have perceived my comments about Pink Pony Club and although I did not mean it in that way I also didn't fully understand the depth and point of the song until this moment so thank you for sharing that perspective. I was trying to say she is wrapping up an intense topic in a fun and silly way by saying "pink pony club" but it didn't come across how I meant it too. I am very sorry its come off as not inclusive as we are trying our best to fathom these artist and be honest about our opinions whilst doing so. I said in my opinion Chappell doesn't come across as very real or open to me because she is playing a character but then went on to say her music is very vulnerable and I do absolutely feel that. But i also didn't fully take into account the vulnerability of drag itself. I am allowed to share an opinion on how she comes across to me and how I connect with her, I am not denying her ability to connect with others and her impact. And us watching this video and opening up this conversation IS us researching... maybe you could share how you connect with her and why instead of attacking us for not researching something so we can learn and understand? I also agree with your point about strong women being put down by the patriarchy, which is why I brought attention to myself questioning my own potential internalised misogyny. I thought you should know with all our convos about Taylor how we feel about that kind of topic. In saying that I have learn't a lot from this comment and appreciate the insight so much. I am very sorry for how my words came across as ignorant and for how they may have offended you ❤️

chatsandreacts

Thank you Lucie, I very much appreciate this comment today. its not always easy to share opinions publicity and sometimes its very stressful and upsetting to be misunderstood or misinterrupted. 💖

chatsandreacts

Thank you Lisa!! This is exactly whats happening in this video and we never want that to hurt peoples feelings. We appreciate the conversation it opens and how much we can learn from these moments.

chatsandreacts

I totally understand where you are coming from Wanda, and there has been a lot for me to reflect on after this video. I would have thought from all our videos backing Taylor and talking about misogyny that you would know how we feel about this topic and how strongly we support women. I think its a more layered and nuanced discussion then just simply "a woman standing up for herself". But I will absolutely reflect on your comment.

chatsandreacts

Thank you so much this kind yet informative comment Hayden. Very insightful and lots for us to ponder on and learn from. I absolutely think there is so much more us to understand about drag and the queer community for us to fully grasp Chappell and I appreciate you helping us understand that. I do want to just add that I don't think drag + queer women who sets boundaries = the reasons I don't gravitate to Chappell. Sometimes liking someones vibe and personality is more nuanced than that. I love a strong women who fights societal norms, we rant about feminism in sooo many of our videos that I am surprised you guys don't know that we totally GET THAT!!

Hayden Brice

Oh! Just to be clear, I'm not saying that y'all are being anti-feminist! I would be very shocked if y'all were saying women shouldn't stand up for themselves. If you don't click with Chappell that's totally fine! I adore her, and I want more folks to understand what she's doing, but that doesn't mean you have to love her and her work. Some things aren't for you or don't speak to you right now, and that's totally fine! Maybe you'll like it later, maybe you won't. I much prefer authenticity than faking liking someone's vibe you don't!

Noah Sharon

Yes please watch the SNL performance!! I would love to see that

Nadja Peedu

Hi Bon and Em, I just wanted to speak my mind about this video and some of the comments. I totally see the side you’re coming from Bonnie and as a lesbian myself I just wanted to send some love. I totally get what some people are saying about drag and the importance of it and how vulnerable it is. But the same way that I sometimes can’t relate to Taylor’s songs when I find them too normative for my own experiences, i would never expect you two to just immediately get a queer persons side. Not saying that you guys can’t relate because of course we all can take bits and pieces from songs and relate in our own way. Please don’t let the comments about drag and pink pony club affect you Bon 🫶🏼 I can 100% feel the love and inclusivity that you two bring to this community, but I think we ask for too much when we get angry when you don’t see every side of every artist. I myself will never be able to fully understand everything a black woman has experienced and have had to go through. But that does not mean that I invalidate them. Hope this comes across the right way. I just want to assure you that it is never wrong to have an opinion and express that opinion, and I think we ask for too much if we keep sending these types of negative comments every time you guys can’t fully relate to a topic that some of us live in. Hugs to both of you ❤️

Nadja Peedu

I totally get that. And I think that Bonny has gotten some insight in to how important that song is now. That song is as you say very emotional for us queer people, I just felt kinda bad reading all the comments attacking Bonnie when I think that she majorly was saying that the beat of the song and the structure was silly. Not the topic. But I get your opinion 100%

R 🌀

Sheesh ya tbh I didn’t see the other comments on here- I agree. But I also understand why some people were maybe hurt, although they may have not expressed it in the best way. I just also think that calling someone into a culture they may not understand is a super important/ awesome opportunity, and not meant to be hateful! For me, I’m the same. I don’t relate to Taylor a lot of the time because of how incredibly heterosexual her music can be, but it’s important to communicate with each other about what we may or may not understand, and make an effort to understand each other. That was what my comment was trying to say.

claudia jones

Chappell has just did an interview it’s on bbc radio 1 youtube and I think it would be great for you to listen to her talk a bit more

Wanda🖤

oh 100% and you can discuss a topic and still have internalized issues with a topic like you mentioned in this video which is what i am commenting on. i do not believe either of you carry hate in your heart it was just a odd take to hear from people I KNOW stand up for that kind of thing. think it just came off a certain way in this discussion 🩷🩷 much love

Starsonscars

Does anyone else feel that Chappel’s voice is like Linda Ronstadt? I especially hear it on Kink is My Karma…

Alexia 🫶🏻

Hi Bonnie! I REALLY appreciate you trying to articulate and decide “the why” behind your feelings for Chappell’s persona. I do go into those rabbit holes with some artists male and female. It is hard to figure out sometimes what is our own opinions and what is something instilled on us (whether we realize it or not) . And this is coming from a 28 year old who is still learning about her sexuality and identity in general💖 you guys are called Chats And React for a reason, we love a good chat ☺️

Dany Rv

Guys this is the kind of reaction that I love!! I love to have your real perspective about the artist, songs, vibe, etc. I can relate with what you guys are saying and this is why I keep watching you guys. If you don’t like something or are not vibing with something I love to see it!! Honest queens, I’m so here for it!

nikki

Just want to send you some love, Bonny. I think anyone who watches your videos regularly knows you are open-minded and inclusive. There’s intent vs impact. Your comments clearly had impact, and I appreciate that you are listening and learning from the feedback. I also don’t think your intent was ever to hurt anyone. There are many who do that intentionally, and I know you are not one of them. Not one single person is perfect and we all can learn from each other. Your videos are such a light in some pretty tough times. Thank you for being open to listening and for all you both do to share your love of music with us. 🩷

Nadja Peedu

Absolutely, I agree. Just shows how important it is to discuss with each other and being open to express our feelings even when they are uncomfortable. Hugs to you!

Juliana Martinez

I’m kinda in the same boat as Bonny, I don’t love the nonchalant over the top character that drag represents, but that’s probably internal misogyny talking because drag is not widely seen or understood where I’m from. I think it’s why I prefer artists like Olivia, Taylor, Sabrina, etc who are more stereotypically female, Nonetheless, I do really like Chappell’s songs and am waiting for her to release her next album!

Wanda🖤

coming back to send some love to you both. seeing you both not only try to understand more but genuinely care about how the queer community feels towards this certain topic is so uplifting, showing again just how much you DO care about women and the music scene . i love you both and has been such an eye opening experience for everyone i think and so grateful you all have created the safe space for this type of honesty. but to the people being insanely mean in these comments, please go touch grass. i understand being confused by this particular reaction but please get a grip🫶🏼

Moonlit Nomad

BBC just released an interview where she addressing some topics that were touched on, I highly recommend watching regardless if you decide to react for us :) https://youtu.be/ZEhSOz0VoqQ?si=CLUudD3V0ZXC17W5 thank you for always staying open minded! love always sent your way no matter what❤️

Maria McElroy

Girls, Listening to you compare Chappell to Lady Gaga and Olivia to Avril as the “new reinvented face of that sound” and not connect that you’re literally describing Clara Bow/Nothing New/The Lucky One 😂😂

Liv

Go and follow someone that validates every single opinion of yours than 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tina Lingen

Doechii’s Tiny Desk performance changed my whole world. She’s just on another level. Also her performance on Stephen Colbert! The choreo, setting, hair, just…🤯. She is IT right now!

Louise

what a bizarre thing to say

Bella

I totally agree and I do think it is totally fine to not connect with an artist/character. I have the same feeling toward other people not liking Taylor, it’s ok if they don’t resonate with her, I’m not going to just assume that makes them misogynistic (unless they say something to make me think that)

Dominika

As much as I love Chappell, see and appreciate everything she's doing for queer community, she's not perfect and I think it's important to see that in all of this. People are allowed to have different opinions about her and it's not always "internalized misogyny" Also, I kinda agree with not liking this whole "nonchalant/i don't care about anything" persona - that's not quite as revolutionary as people paint it to be. Not caring is exactly what's helping to keep the status quo. Caring is what is revolutionary

Christine

Bon and Em, not all the critical comments are from America, I'm sure, but as an American we are in a deep crisis right now especially after today's inauguration- so some of the feedback surely is a reflection of the very scary state of America right now. ESPECIALLY for the queer community and their allies/friends and family. So that's just a bit of context as to maybe some people's emotional state right now. ❤️

joy

Chappell wanting people to respect her boundaries =/= to artists wanting validation. That comparison doesnt work. It suggests that you're saying that TS is okay w/her boundaries being disrespected b/c she wants ppl to clap for her (every artist wants ppl to pay attention its why they put themselves in front of us). Taylor started 17+yrs ago and grew up in a different music industry where she **couldnt** have been outspoken in the same way to set boundaries with the media w/o negative consequences a la Dixie chicks being shut out of country radio. Thankfully Chappell has been able to set boundaries w/ fans and media who are harrassing her, but it is possible for that to happen b/c things have progressed and the industry is a little different.

Malika Brown

I don’t really agree. Taylor is more into the fan interaction but she still seems to prefer it in a controlled environment and in the context of celebrating her work. The Kevin thing was about people being excited for her album releases, which is something Chappell probably wants too. Taylor is obviously more willing to engage with fans in public but that doesn’t mean she wants or craves constant attention, she’s said the opposite.

ton

Not sure… doesn’t it risk removing the reaction to just analysis telling people what they already know. Maybe as a kind of subsequent fathoming one but not for a first watch reaction for me I think

Jessie Anderson

This is insane! We can’t listen to her music without understanding every little thing behind it and what it means?!

Gianluca

i'm also not a fan of chappell and im not that into her music, and I agree with everything Bonny said. I dont like the character she represents, just not my vibe. :( but I get why people like her

Rebecca Walter

Agreed!!! It’s incredible. And her Stephen Colbert performance was a work of art

Taylor always could’ve been outspoken… you say this like Chappell invented speaking out against pop stardom and fame when Madonna, Gaga, nicki Minaj, Courtney love, literally any punk rock band, and so many other artists out there exists. Taylor doesn’t speak to paps like Chappell because she plays the fame game. And there is nothing wrong with that.. there is also nothing wrong with needing validation in the form of fan engagement. She shows up to red carpets and she shows up to take photos. She has boundaries in a different way than Chappell and the way she does it is by having her team take care of things like that rather than lashing out. But it is important to remember Chappell has come out as saying she hopes she doesn’t win Grammys because they can “fuck off”. The reason Taylor doesn’t lash out in public is because she wants people to like her and listen to her music and vote for her music to win. It’s literally what she wrote Anti-hero about…. And there is nothing wrong with that! There is nothing wrong with how either of them handle themselves. It’s just their personalities and preferences. Both ask for boundaries just in different ways and Taylor will put up with the game of fame for the popularity. Chappell won’t. It does relate.

Erica

I don’t really know what you mean by controlled environment.. ? I’m not saying Taylor ditches her security team and runs into crowds of people by herself to get attention. Any time she goes anywhere it is a controlled situation. That is her life. The Kevin conversation is about her fame.. it very much relates to this. Chappell has said she doesn’t like the way pop stars are supposed to act to keep their popularity. Taylor will do what she needs to to keep people clapping. She has spoken about this many many times. Applause was the second to last song before the eras tour opened for a reason… she wrote anti-hero about this exact subject.. she sometimes doesn’t like herself because she does things for fame. Her “covert narcissism disguised as altruism like some kind of congressman”. She literally explores that in many of her songs. ICDIWABH, the lucky one, anti-hero, mastermind.. And Chappell will do the opposite and tell her fans to leave her alone. Both are fine.

Chappells music is so amazing but yes her kind of “vulgar” attitude is off putting to some. Reminds me of Billie a bit in that way. Not socially “polished”; saying the wrong thing sometimes.

Courtney

Oooooo thank you for clarifying what encompasses qualifying for Best New Artist. I have often wondered why artists that aren’t new win, now I know lol

Of course negative commentators are going to drag you both down because they just want to get angry for no reason. You girls are doing great!

DemiMarie🤍🖤

So well said! And absolutely agree! One of the main reasons I watch these chickens. The honesty is refreshing imo. ❤️❤️

DemiMarie🤍🖤

Side Note on Haunted (Acoustic Version) IT IS A LOT THAT SHE DIDN'T DO THAT! 😭😭🫶🏻 (I will never get over it either Emily🤣😭)

Annie

please consider that your condescending tone really sucks and steers people away from whatever point you are trying to make. your aggressiveness is very counterproductive.

Keri 🫶🏻

Plenty of people agree with me and I can speak how I want. I’ll be blocking you now

Louise

? there’s a difference between just not understanding a meaning, and sharing potential harmful and offensive interpretations based on your misunderstanding. hence why they made a follow up video to address some of that. chill out

Sydney

Perhaps listen to the whole song and/or the first song, then that person can explain those things.

Jason

Lolling at the millennial crisis over the realization that punk has been around so long it's officially being recycled in a new generation. We getting old 😭😂 "it's been 20 years..." 🤣

Ana Noronha

"Bands are a lot" had me lolling, cause yep, true

Dani

i agree it kinda put me off..

Ally ❤️

In the same way that it was hard for me to connect with Gaga.’s over the top persona, I do not connect with Chappell’s. In that respect, I just consider that it’s not FOR me. Art is in the eye of the interpreter. I do understand that it IS important, and representative. And in that regard, I appreciate it and support it. Especially these days it is so important to support all voices! As a person, Chappell is very young (as is Billie). She can get a pass for some degree of awkward gaffes in the public eye for a time… Not forever, but for a time… it will wear out over time and turn people off 🤷‍♀️

I was impressed with your follow-up fathoming video so felt compelled to watch this, and now I’m a couple songs in. I didn’t think I was going to connect with Chappells music, which I was SO WRONG ABOUT. I am loving each song so far, and your reaction, especially with the context you provided in your follow-up. I am excited to explore more of Chappell’s music and learn more about the positive impact she must be making. While I understand the need for safe spaces for those who don’t feel like every space is safe, I also want to chime in that Bonny and Emily are likely creating more Chappell fans by discussing her music (like me), so even if they don’t immediately fathom something in a reaction, the resulting conversation is probably providing more value than if they “did their research” first in private. I believe growth is important, so I REALLY commend Bonny and Emily for being so vulnerable and open with their Patreon. Thank you!

I saw the apology video first - really appreciate your willingness to be respectfully candid in your reactions. Love that you engaged with her fame pushback cause I think the discussion is important. My take is that a shift in norms with more respectful boundaries toward famous people is SO needed - the public can be wildly abusive and starting to experience stalking and harassment is terrifying especially in the context of knowing how Britney Spears etc were treated, and she is trying to figure how to protect herself in a highly abnormal situation that can feel threatening. At the same time, like most people, she isn’t the most charismatic or effective communicator which hurts her as a messenger - eg the bits between songs came off awkward and uncomfortable and off putting (and most people probably would similarly be anxious and awkward). But we are used to Taylor, a masterful communicator, exceptionally charismatic, even in the most bizarre and stressful situations - an impossible standard for most so may need to remind ourselves that level of social savviness is not normal and can’t be expected from everyone

I know you guys said that you'd love to know the real Chappel and hear her talk more about her songs and herself. I think the BBC interview is great for that. Would love for you to watch it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEhSOz0VoqQ

Kyle

Oh no - I joined the Patreon today because I have watched your Chappell reaction on YouTube 100 times and loved it and was hoping there was more of her on here, but after skimming these comments it looks like you might not be fans like I had interpreted :(

Rachel L

Hey guys, Chappell has a 2 part doc on her personal YouTube about the creation of this album and is super vulnerable and open about what made her write these songs. I think it’d be super interesting to watch you react to those!

Na

Chapel has been doing a lot of really good interviews recently. Her interview with Apple Music I think you’d particularly like as she talks quite a lot about her history with country music and the country scene. She kinda gives me Noah Kahn vibes in a way from the way she describes her upbringing. I think you’d be able to find some similarities with Taylor in that.

Na

The bbc radio 1 interview is also really good as well, she expands a little bit on the comment she made about fans and boundaries. She talks about how she was in therapy all summer and I think you can really see growth in her, she talks about how she has grace for some of these behaviours a bit more now.

Breezy Bumbles

Good Luck Babe is the best song I’ve ever heard!! 🤣 I 100% agree Bonny.
