so Taylor was obviously born in 1989 & I was born in 2003, so because of that for a lot of Taylor’s albums I was so young so I didn’t really have like my own access to music! so any song of Taylor’s from the first 6 albums I discovered from my older sister or the radio ofc! so Lover was the first Taylor album that I listened to on my own the day it came out and was unbelievably obsessed, but for some reason unknown to me I never went back to Taylor’s other albums to listen to the songs I didn’t know until I finally got Spotify 2021 which was when I started college because you get a discount on Spotify if ur a student so that’s when I finally went through all of her albums! so with red, there were only 8 songs I knew the original of before listening to the entire Taylor’s version of red! 1. red 2. IKYWT 3. WANEGBT 4. 22 5. all too well 6. holy ground 7. everything has changed 8. stay stay stay so for me there’s not really many songs that I prefer the original to just because I’ve really only know the Taylor’s version of most of the songs! like i think i only prefer the og of i knew you were trouble, holy ground, and i knew you were trouble, but i still have both versions on my playlist which i think works cuz her discography is so huge

To add to this: I think Taylor also really gives an insight in all the bad sides and thoughts of men. Listening to it makes me kind of aware of it and hating it if I see it in another man. I really hope you see this and respond cuz I’m desperate to know - have you guys ever really listened to/fathomed Lover - First Dance remix? I ask because I’m fearful there’s a chance you haven’t, because 1) it’s not included on the playlist, 2) in one video you noted someone said they liked the remix better and assumed they were talking about the Shawn Mendes one and I think they meant this one, and 3) the Joseph James Megamix viral video starts with it and in your reaction you seemed to think it was just pretty string instrumentals. Which makes me think you either somehow never heard it or you only heard it once and forgot, but it’s so good and I think you should refathom! As a swiftie that joined on Red TV release date i couldn’t go back and listen to the Ogs and now i still can’t pick any OG songs over TVs (except the singles) the old ones doesn’t hit for me. her vocals feels weak and she sounds like she's struggling to breathe 😭 where in TV is so perfect and clear

The thing that makes me choose State Of Grace original version is that towards the ending there's a background where she repeats the bridge. In the Taylor's Version there background bridge repeat it's muffled and the original it's more crisp. Besides this little detail, I think State Of Grace tv it's perfect.

if you pay attention to the chorus drop in Starlight TV, IT IS MISSING A DRUM KICK. In the og version the drum is before she goes “oh my”, whereas in Taylor’s version it simply doesn’t exist. That single handedly made me go with the og!!

This is one of my favorite videos!! It took me 2 hours to watch bc I’m pausing and contemplating what you guys say and then listening to both versions myself and I have some differences from your lists but you also convinced me on some and so this was so fun!! Also want to say that the way Bonny described the last time was like a mini breakdown and I had a meltdown. I’ve always loved that song but Bonny you seriously unlocked something in my brain with that description!! Last thing I’ll say is back in the og Red days I never listened to come back…be here… but the Taylor’s Version one put it to my 3rd song on red. In the TV when she says “but you’re in london and I breakdown cause it’s not fair that you’re not around!! This is when the feeling sinks in…” that whole bit hits sooooo much harder than the og. And it sends me to another place.

The Last Time is the most i've ever disagreed with both of you 😅 It's my favorite rerecord on Red. Taylor's deeper voice with his sound SO good. Their harmonies are so much better. The reason I didnt love the og version is because their vocals felt disjointed kinda like their harmonies were just slightly off and now that I listened to TV where they're perfect it's even worse going back. The unbelievable thing about how Scooter is spinning this is that Taylor is not the first artist to fight for and have disagreements about the rights to her music. Artists like Prince and Paul McCartney (and many others, I'm sure) set the precedent for this. Paul McCartney had a public falling out with Michael Jackson because Jackson bought the publishing rights to the Beatles catalogue. So it's not as if there was no historic precedent for this sort of situation that could have informed Scooter of how Taylor might react.

I started listening to Taylor in 2009 with Crazier and Love Story, but I didn't become a diehard Swiftie until the Midnights era😅 (If you ask me if I regret anything in life, it would be that I was sooo late to the party 😂). I love the Taylor's versions because of her mature voice. Now that she's bought back her masters, I really enjoy listening to the old versions of songs I either haven't listened to in years or have never listened to before. I need people to be able to take things seriously and it’s like most men just can’t because they’re too busy being “”blokes””. What happened to being a gentleman? They don’t seem to want to respect or be respected. One thing I noticed when doing this exercise is that there were some OG songs that I never fathomed UNTIL the TV came out (like I Almost Do, Sad Beautiful Tragic, Begin Again), so obviously I chose them. But then songs like The Lucky One… there’s just something about this song that I was obsessed with at 21 that will never be replaced, no matter how much a re-recording can be an objectively better version

It’s exactly the same for me with both Red and Fearless. I think we will always compare the ones we heard first and got familiar with to the ones we hear after. So yeah, for me, it’s almost like my originals actually ARE the Taylor’s Versions. But this is not the case with 1989 and Speak Now, that I listened to a lot before the TV’s came out - so I find it interesting how different I view these TV projects

I became a fan of Taylor's music in Lover era (despite knowing and appreciating Fearless and Speak Now when they came out years earlier) and so I didn't have a massive tie to her earlier work. That made the rerecording process so exciting for me because I was able to experience the earlier albums as if they were a new era. That whole experience with the four rerecording albums was so special for me that I now have a tie to those albums such that while I do and will go back to listen to the originals, I'll always hold the rerecorded albums close to heart - they will be number 1 for me for the nostalgia (funnily enough). Also Red TV came out shortly after I met my now husband and it reminds me of that time and bringing him into the Swift universe. as someone who became a full swifite after foklore/evermore era and has known Red Taylor’s Version far better than the original, I appreciate the insights and discussion you have on the songs! It’s been exciting to go back and listen to the originals and I do think you make some fair points. Also, for the cover, as you mentioned, the TV cover touches upon a lot of the autumn theme of Red, whereas the original reminds me more of the singles of Red. And for me, who enjoys the songs on Red that aren’t the singles more than the singles, I therefore prefer the Red TV cover slightly more just for that reason. Getting Taylor’s Version of this album is what made me understand the whole concept of Red outside of the singles, which I had not yet done prior to the re-recording. And I think the aesthetics and style of the Taylor’s Version she presented with the re-record era made that possible, and I was able to fathom and appreciate the album even more as it’s now a top 5 Taylor album for me. But omgg both are superior and so happy to have them both!!

For me, Red OG is the album that made me a fan, and I never got that nostalgia feeling when I listened to Red TV even though they were the same songs. On some of the TV i get that her vocals are stronger and production has in some cases improved - but OG will always just feel special for me when I listen to it in a way that TV never could.

God the TV version of that song just send me straight to the clouds, her vocals are IMPECABLE and the instrumental is IMMACULATE, the BRIDGE??? The "tun" instrument under the "get you, get you", "think you, think you", and "follow you, follow you" is MUCH more present and gives the bridge way more punchness, gives the song way more intensity and matches too well with the vibe and lyrics of the song. I'm shook at how different Stay Stay Stay sounds, not just in the vocals. Funny enough you hear the difference better through crappy phonespeakers. Because of the bad quality, it's more obvious which instruments stick out in the mix. When the beat drops, in the OG you hear a very juicy bass line, in TV you can't hear that but a grittier guitar is way more up front. Don't know which instrumental/mix I prefer, but my choice was also decided by Emily's argument of nasality

Sorry for the long post... OG Red is probably my favorite album ever. It came out after I had gone through a divorce at a very young age, and I had JUST met my current husband (though I didn't know it yet). I was struggling financially and emotionally and he bought me Red when it came out. And I cried through almost all the songs but then I got to Begin Again and not to be corny, but for the first time, the past was the past. He also surprised me with tickets to her Red Tour and I took a selfie of us at the concert where he was one of very few men, and my caption was "When they ask me how I knew he was the one, it will point to this moment" and now we are married, we have 2 beautiful daughters who love Taylor. I didn't listen to the OG version once TV came out so Taylor getting her masters back also feels like I got a little bit of MY life back too. ❤️

Sometimes I wonder how much criticism of Taylor’s vocal performances on the earlier albums influenced the way she sang in the re-recordings… like could what we as Swifties interpret as emotion or passion be interpreted by a critic as a weakness in her vocals and so she polished up the vocal performance to be so strong that we now think it is void of the emotion?

I think the passion and intensity we hear on the original versions also has to do with pride and conviction around these songs as brand new creations. When she wrote State of Grace/Red/ATW, they were her best work to date and she KNEW. Her voice gives "listen to how fucking goooood these songs are" whereas in Taylor's version, she'd achieved folklore and evermore and written some of Midnights. She no longer had that initial excitement about the songs being her best work EVER because she's outdone herself so many times.

I hope this makes sense, I’m using the audio text lol! this is so intriguing to me because this all depends on whether or not you were there when the og Red came out or if you came to be a swiftie a little bit later in life and weren’t so close with the original Red album. vocal coach here! I think what you’re noticing between the original recordings and Taylor’s Versions is largely due to vocal maturity. Our vocal cords naturally change from our 20s into our 30s, and you can hear that in her tone - it’s rounder, smoother, and her vowels are more refined. The originals have more twang and brightness, while the re-recordings sound more controlled (because her technique has improved and vocal chords have matured). That said, some of the new versions may feel flatter or less energetic because she’s no longer emotionally in the same place like you said, but also as a more skilled vocalist now, these songs may not require as much effort to sing, which can also change how they come across. Love you guys 💖🥰
