I think the only TV that's really an improvement for me is I Know Places because her vocals aren't so shrill. I strongly dislike This Love TV, it's so metallic and robotic and just sucks the romance out of the song for me.

I agree with almost everything Emily did - the only thing is I have always been an OOTW girl and while I completely agree that it is such an amazing re-record and that the sounds are perfect and it almost is identical, there is something in the way she screams “oh I remember” at the end of the bridge into the last chorus that was lost for me in TV and is enough for me to go back to the OG 100% will still listen to TV because it’s so beautiful but there is just a magic in the vocals for me in the OG God this album is just TOOOO good 🥹🫶🏻

I have very mixed feelings about these comparison videos. I enjoy you talking about the songs, but I feel no need to compare the two versions. And, too, this same rationale that she was really feeling the emotions the first time could be used to say that you don't want to hear her perform these songs live, because after all she is not feeling those emotions for the first time in live performances either. For myself, I have a formula where her songs rotate on and off my daily playlist somewhat randomly, and so I just added the originals back to that rotation. This could lead to weird situations where both the original and the rerecorded versions are on my playlist at the same time, but that already happened with ATW and ATW10, so I just have to tolerate it.

I actually am not a fan of Clean TV, and I know that's unpopular. There's just something about her 2014 vocals on it that hits just right. Especially when she sings the chorus after the bridge, and she shortens the pronunciation of "finally" to sound like "finely" - her voice there in the OG packs such a punch. And This Love has been my #1 Taylor song for a while, so the original recording of that will always be my favorite. As good as TV sounds, she didn't quite get the vocal layering of the "oh-oh-oh" in the chorus right.

I can feel you lovely chickens feeling conflicted about picking original versions of a lot of songs and I think that all of us need to remember that there is nothing wrong with going back to the originals, in fact I’m sure Taylor would love that!! Those are the versions she originally recorded, loved, and wanted to own before they were ripped away from her. Once that happened, she made the best of it and we did too by supporting the re-records. But in the end, the originals were always the “real” versions of the songs—they just happened to be stolen for a time. So listening to them and loving them (even more than the re-records) now is a good thing! It doesn’t diminish the excitement and love when had for TVs at the time either, bc in that moment, we were helping her reclaim work but now, we have it all.

The vault tracks are on TV, so there’s that lol Is It Over Now is one of the best songs she’s ever written, you understand, I must say that some of the eras tour versions have become my favorites, especially the TTPD and Rep tracks. Out Of The Woods from the 1989 tour and We Are Never Getting Back Together are my favorite versions at times. The great thing is, we can listen to ALL of the versions 😀 I just added the originals back to my playlist and listen to both lol

I actually dont like that much You Are In Love TV, I think the echoes are quiet, you know the "you can hear in the silence (SILENCE)" part, the OG is clearer. For This Love I pick the original cause I'm super attatched to that song, its my #1 Taylor Swift song and I always felt it was underrated - and looking at its stats, i'm right, its her least streamed song from the original album

Resident Swede and Max Martin and Shellback stan here. Ali Payami is a Swedish/Iranian producer who was on Max’s team back then and he made the iconic Style production. He told the story in a documentary on Swedish radio how he was just working on it unrelated to Taylor. She was in the building working with Max and shellback, heard him through the door and went to Max and said she loved the sound and that she wanted it. Pretty surreal to be working and have Taylor Swift knock on your door lmao. Ilya is also Swedish/Iranian and has worked LOADS with Ariana Grande. Basically any big Ari hit has his name on it.

No but the You’re in Love discussion. As a ’newer’ Swiftie (was not in 1989 era) I remember so vividly connecting to You’re in Love and Clean for the simple way of describing the biggest feelings in life. After Red she had a clear vision of making a pop album that was lyrically relatable without being lyrically dense or super specific and it’s insane how universally relatable the songs are for being such bops and a bit more vague than other albums.

Rep is basically a ’Martin and friends’ or ’Antonoff’ album production wise (not negating those producers working alongside Martin and Schellback I’m just saying they were brought on by him as he was working with them at the time)

Regarding Welcome to New York - I actually love Taylor’s Version so much more. I lived in New York at the time 1989 was released and i never truly appreciated it. It always felt “cheesy” like you mentioned some people feel, relative to other songs. Especially because I think I recall the city using it in promos for tourism. TV was the first time I really listened to it with fresh ears and the more mature vocals plus the new production just felt so much fuller that I really heard it for the first time.

Performing live is quite a different experience in our opinion. it rarely sounds like the original and thats okay because its a different experience. You are watching a show and connecting with Taylor in that moment. We feel these videos are a fun way to celebrate both versions and have a chat about the OG's again, I think they are an important space to process all of this change!

Hey y'all! Butch Walker was the lead vocalist and guitarist of the band Marvelous 3 which was a pop / rock band in the late 90s here in America. Look up "Freak of the Week" and "Every Monday" ...you won't regret it! He has done a lot since... solo, co-writing, and production wise with a lot of mainstream artists. He is also originally from Atlanta, GA (like me) and I got to meet him when I was in college in the early 2000s...so there's that tidbit of info! :)

I will say that I thought the difference in This Love was remarkable with headphones/earbuds, the TV sounds so much better to me. For you are in love I chose the original because Taylor’s version has this cloudy brushing sound in the chorus that’s really pushed to the front and it’s distracting. In the original It is way back and you can only hear it a tiny bit.

Okay. I have an unpopular opinion. I think that 1989 TV is better than the original. The sound is so much fuller and louder through headphones. I was really surprised when I listened to the original 1989 because it was underwhelming and less powerful than Taylor’s version. Which could just be technology improvements. I’m so sorry. Don’t come for me!

I have NEVER felt as passionately about a re-record as I do with This Love. This Love TV made me realize the song so much so that it’s now my number 1 on 1989. You Are In Love - in the original, the music strips back when she says “pauses then says, you’re my best friend, and you knew what it was, he is in love” and it’s sooo meaningful. In Taylor’s version it doesn’t hit the same way. It seems like it doesn’t fully strip back until “he is in love” and it makes such a difference. That’s my favorite part of the song. But both are so good

I love HYGTG but I think the part that loses people is the melody of “I love you for worse or for better, I would wait for ever and ever” I guess I get that it’s slightly annoying but the way it fits into the song is so good like it’s maybe a prechorus into “AND THATS HOW IT WORKS THATS HOW YOU GET THE GIRL”
