22 makes me feel like being 22 AGAIN! It’s such a throwback to that time when you feel carefree and young and a little bit tortured. It gets me every.single.time! You could argue it is just a bit of an overplayed song and whenever you ask for Taylor at a wedding this is one of the once they play - but it’s just THAT good. You can’t deny perfection

sorry about my number 11, love you guys 1. midnight rain (best production I've ever heard in my life, and the only song on midnights that references the concept she presented the album as) 2. you belong with me (from her old albums I'd say its one of my favorite singles) 3. the outside (I have an attachment to this song I cant explain it) 4. look what you made me do (the eras tour truly made me realize how iconic it was for Taylor to come back with this song in 2017) 5. but daddy i love him (Taylor called us the f out, iconic) 6. no body no crime (she's fun, love the sound of it and Taylor's classic storytelling song structure) 7. mirrorball (love her lirically but unfortunately, sonically I don't enjoy it and that's what brings it down for me) 8. 22 (she's fine) 9. i think he knows (I don't like the chorus melody) 10. shake it off (if im at a party and it comes on I'll dance to it and sing it but I never actively seek it and I often skip it when listening to 1989) 11. mean (sorry most often than not its a skip for me)

I honestly only listen to the top4/5, and Midnight Rain is miles above the rest. I just love how moody and introspective it is, the production is a masterpiece too. I also love The Outside, like Emily its also my favorite from Debut, super underrated. Tbh most of these songs could rank at #11 if they were against those track 9s for example, even Mirrorball, its nowhere near my favorite from Folklore, I probably prefer 7 other songs on that album alone.

Re: But Daddy I Love Him chat For me personally, I LOVE relating songs to my favorite shows'/books' characters, and then live vicariously through their experience So, for me personally, the song is about season 3 Gilmore Girls lol if you know you know😅😅 it's crazy to me how uncanny that song relates to the Jess of it all [another example is the book series Throne Of Glass and the song Castles Crumbling bc I've never heard that song the same after someone pointed it out to me, it is soooooo the main character in the series it's insane to me that she didn't actually write it about that lol] That being said, I agree and understand how other people's negative opinions/looking for a paternity test result for it can affect your relationship with a song. Like to me songs are about what you take from them, and of course there are exceptions, but some songs speak to you for a reason you know? It was a fun theory that people had!! it was wrong, but I think the theories are fun and if we’re wrong, who really cares!! like I found the 2 1/2 month discourse of what each TTPD song could be about very fun and yeah, like we were wrong about basically every song, but I didn’t really care because the theories are fun and once again they never affect my feelings on a song!! no matter how wrong we are or how deep the theories go!!! also the phenomenon of ttpd didn’t affect my relationship with the album at all

Regarding Mean: you have to go back and read the actual review of Taylor's performance from Bob Lefsetz. It's UNBELIEVABLY ridiculous and way over the top. He actually says that Taylor "killed her career overnight" and that she "consigned herself to the dustbin of teen phenoms -- who we expect to burn brightly and then fade away." He then says, "Taylor’s too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made" and that "It’s hard to be a singer if you can’t sing." He concludes with: "Will Taylor Swift be duetting with the stars of the 2030s? Doubtful." Oh, and he also disses Miley in the review -- so hilarious that he says Taylor and Miley won't have longevity. What an idiot.

I actually recently rewatched your reaction videos to TTPD and it was interesting how the preconceived ideas about BDILH and The Alchemy affected how you were hearing the song for the first time. I just think overall the release of TTPD was so overwhelming all around. I literally felt like I got hit by a bus for days after just trying to take everything in.

In defense of 22, I will say that the lyric is “Idk about u, but I’m FEELING 22” ..She never actually says that she literally is 22yrs old (even thou we know that she was 😅). So, for me, this song is not meant to be literal, but instead is celebrating a youthful feeling, which ppl can experience at any age, no matter how old they are.

i appreciated your conversation about ttpd at the end of the video. ttpd kinda wasn't for any of us. it really was just for her. she poured out all of the things that had lived in her head for so many years and then told us the story isn't hers anymore. yeah, it called out a lot of the toxic swifties and the haters, but that wasn't the main point, it laid to rest joe and matty and kim. she finally made an album that just said it all. no holds barred. she was so vulnerable. not many artists are willing to admit to the world that some little man had held their heart for a decade. no one writes a breakup album about the rebound guy, because those guys don't normally matter. most artists wouldn't tell their fans they were faking it for the first part of their world tour. i truly listened to almost no other music besides ttpd for 9 months and very little of the reason it captivated me was about me relating to it. it just gave me the clearest picture of who taylor is and what makes her tick and gave a glimpse into her head and heart. i learned so much about her and it made me love her more. she exorcised a bunch of demons with ttpd and ts12 feels like it might be a reset album - a new version of begin again

Your TTPD discussion is so interesting to me and I feel similarly. It can often enhance my relationship with a song to think about what person/situation could have been a muse for it, but the paternity testing of every song or even line in a song on TTPD sometimes waters down the song's message for me. Whereas just listening to the lyrics and trying to detach myself from what situation it could be about has often made me appreciate more what story/feelings a TTPD song is actually about (to me). It's why I love a song like hoax so much. There's so little to grab on there in terms of what definitive thing it could be about and that helps me apply it to my own life or just get lost in the feeling it's giving me!

Oooooh em geee I have to stop RIGHT NOW and comment because I adore the outside!!!! I’ve put it at number 2! Similarly to Emily, I also have a soft spot for this song from many years ago, it’s so beautiful. Pretty relatable in those teenage years at school too. I think the lyrics are great, especially since she wrote them when she was 12?! 😮 My favourite lyric is ‘I tried to take the road less travelled by, but nothing seems to work the first few times, am I right?’ I just think it’s so beyond the years of a 12 year old to write that. Before I give you my ranking, let me say that if you are an artist planning a tour, you look at your own streaming numbers. Midnight Rain has far more streams than Maroon or You're On Your Own Kid, though YOYOK has been catching up more recently. When she was planning her tour, Midnight Rain was outstreaming everything on Midnights except AntiHero, Lavender Haze, and Karma. So here is my ranking. The main difference is I like YBWM significantly more than you two do, and I am not a fan of Shake It Off. Also, we all have a recency bias of sorts, but I think that's because Aaron Dessner and folklore helped her take a huge step forward in her songwriting and it has affected everything she has done since then. I actually do feel like TTPD was MY album, but for a very specific reason! The album released on the morning as I was flying to Florence, so the only thing I did was listen to that album on the flight. And since I was travelling with my (non-swiftie) friends, it felt like it belonged to only me for that weekend, especially since I didn’t have time to really be online and look at what other people said about it. I also think it helped that I didn’t have time to listen to the anthology until my flight HOME. I think that made it easier to not get overhwhelmed. I will always connect TTPD to that trip, and it felt really special to me during those few days, where it felt like it was only me and that album and no outside input really 🤍🤍

Yeah really interesting discussion! For me all the dissecting really has gone a bit too far for me. As in, I understand wanting to understand what Taylor is writing about to understand what it’s coming from to be able to relate to it, but not to the point where it overshadows what the song is about. Like with But Daddy I Love Him - it doesn’t really matter who the love interest is, like Bon and Em said the song is about her feelings on people’s judgments etc. Even a someone who is not to tuned into all the online theories it was a lot of noise and I would have loved hearing people talking about the music and messages of the album more. TTPD really took on a life of its own in a new enourmous way.

Ok position 3-6 was really hard for me to pick so these could flip around. I also noticed that some track 6s have a distinct theme of "bitchy pop song", I'll direct you to those as I go: 1. You Belong With Me - perfect, beautiful pop song. Loved this song since it came out 2. The Outside - Love the sound, always loved what the song is about. Well said Emily about this one! 3. No Body No Crime - sonically this song is like Cowboy Like Me's cool older cousin. It's classic Taylor story telling. What's not to like? One of the bitchy track 6s 4. Shake it Off - brilliant, catchy, bitchy pop song. lol 5. Mean - also a brilliant, catchy, bitchy pop song, now with 100% more country! I've read that review, and that critic wasn't just criticising her, he was straight up bullying her 6. 22 - Love the bridge vocals in this song more than anything, it's a good pop song 7. LWYMMD - I like some select parts of this one, it's a pretty good time overall. Possibly the ultimate bitchy track 6. 8. I Think He Knows - I actually agree that this one fell down in my rankings, I loved it at first but I'm more like, this is ok now. 9. Midnight Rain - actually very interesting lyrically, I like some of the sound and the clean vocals but the rest with the vocal affect is unappealing to me 10. Mirrorball - perfectly lovely and poignant lyrically, but I don't particularly care for the sound and the slow melodies 11. BDILH - This song is ridiculously boring, try-hard, and unoriginal, it does less than nothing for me. Obviously one of the bitchy ones

One thing I'll say about 22, I'm the same age as Taylor so 22 was on the radio when I was 22. I remember belting it in the car with my friends. Everything felt so relatable 'dress up like hipsters, make fun of our exes' ' happy free confused' at the same time. It is a time of my life that was incredibly hard but also incredibly full of love and nostalgia. It following long live on the eras movie gets me emotional every time!

I have always struggled with comprehending ttpd as an album. It was my first brand new album being a full blown swiftie and so it was a very exciting experience, however it was something I had nothing to compare to. SO i've always found it hard to listen to the songs on a base, foundational, ground level, where taylor swift made some songs, formed it into an album, and released it for my ears. I think also the fact that she didnt speak much about the process of making the album, that it felt almost unreal or unauthenitc, as taylor was obviosuly like HEY I was in a lot of mental pain - here is the abum to elaborate. Rather than talking, she released it in music, like shes always done. I just however felt more distanced from her this time, like she was almost reserved in a sense, or beginning to ultimately realise that her job has more cons than pros, regarding the response and fame. And since then she has steered from tik tok and parasocial connections, and didnt do interviews. I understand that is obviously becuase she was doing the BIGGEST tour in histroy, but I also think we may be in for less interviews and conversations in the future. However i hope I am wrong, and also see a future with TS12, and her feature film bringing her back into the conversational moments. ANYWAY thats my rant. love you both so much <3 P.S: Track 12s next :)

Watching you fathom/share your today thoughts about But Daddy I Love Him was so good. I remember Bon being like ‘I’m keeping the Little Mermaid in mind’ in your reaction to TTPD compared to today is such a story arch/human moment that I love so much. For me BDILH hits so deep for me because I was raised as a devout Mormon who cared so much about what my family and community felt about my life choices (including leaving the USA to move to Australia to be with a man who is now my husband of 13 years) and it brings together my religious trauma combined with knowing that my Mormon community back home blames me husband for ‘taking me away’. It’s so interesting listening to your takes on 22 because that song means so much to me, at the eras tour I was dancing as hard as I could to 22 while also sobbing my eyes out. I was 13 when red came out and I thought that song was just so fun and then I went to my first taylor concert - the red tour and it was life changing! I turned 22 listening to that song and then being able to hear it at the double store was so full circle! I still love listening to it and bopping - to me it is truly a bop!

TTPD has been so curious for me! I was really in it for the anticipation for the album and it being on the eras tour. But weirdly the album (even though it is a masterpiece) just doesn’t hit me that hard..maybe it’s because of social media and how big it all has gotten. To me, Tortured Poets was never ours and it was never meant to be ours. It was clearly hers, and she let us into something that she absolutely did not have to. I respect that album whole heartedly for what it was. I’ve always hoped for Taylor that it felt like sending something out into the void to let exist somewhere else outside of her own orbit. Tortured Poets came, and then it left. At least that’s what it felt like and I truly believe that was intentional.

I missed out on the Eras Tour, it's a big pain point for me. I still celebrate it, watch the live streams, love that others got to go... but the fact that I did not get to go remains one of the biggest missed opportunities in my life (tear). That said, I DID feel like TTPD was mine. I connected it with it hard. And I think it is because I did not have the Eras Tour connection in person. My ranking of track 6's: 1. Mean (iconic song, especially for moms of kids who are bullied), this song made me a better mama 2. But Daddy I Love Him (such a strong message for people who are judged for loving who they love) 3. Mirrorball (love for us) 4. Look What You Made Me Do (such a iconic come back) 5. No Body, No Crime (the storytelling!) 6. You Belong With Me (the video!) 7. Shake It Off (good message) 8. Haven’t finished the video yet, loving it so far, but as a 38yr old who occasionally enjoys 22, my relationship with the song changed after realizing how hurt she was on her 21st birthday, which is something I can relate to, so to feel genuinely happy to celebrate the next birthday with her friends feels special and I can really relate to that feeling of being disappointed on an occasion that was supposed to be happy and a big deal, but it was awful instead. Then when life turns around and you find yourself happy, it’s worth celebrating!🥰

Exactly, Bonny! I was literally hitting replay on The Outside, the day before this video, trying to fathom and… I just don’t get it. It confuses me. Like, what? It seems so contradictory. “Nobody ever lets me in” feels like always being on the outside. But then she says, “I’ve never been on the outside.” Huh? But Daddy I Love Him (also one of the best songs she's ever written; I can feel the wild joy pouring out of each chorus, the anger masked as pettiness in the bridge, the trying to find yourself when everyone around you is breathing down your neck to make the right choice whatever that means. I could go on) 3. Mean (I have a personal attachment to this song. I used to scream-sing it as a teenager hoping for a better future and while my life isn't perfect, I _am_ living in a big ol' city and I _am_ big enough so they can't hit me) 4. LWYMMD (hated it when it came out but has grown on me a lot. I was just too young to really get reputation at 17. But now I do and omg one of the best pre-choruses ever) 5. No Body No Crime (honestly didn't think I'd rank it this high, but I'm hardly ever not in the mood for it. Impeccable storytelling, feels like an entire movie - no, an entire tv series - within a few minutes' worth of song. And the last "she thinks I did it but she just can't prove it" does something to my brain) 6. 22 (will always be a 22 stan. One of my favourite singles. I love how boppy it is and it reminds me of being 13/14 watching the music video and daydreaming of being an adult and having fun with my friends. Also she sums up one's early 20s so perfectly with "happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time". It's really hard-hitting if you separate it from the poppy sound) 7. Midnight Rain (not my favourite song on Midnights and I'm not usually in the mood to listen to it on its own, but love it within the album. It fits so perfectly for the vibe and I loved it on the Eras tour) 8. The Outside (I really like this song, but the verses have me a bit lost. I agree with Bonny that it's really really confusing. I really hope we're going to hear a TV version of the song at some point because I'm sure it will be magic. I always feel like this is an extremely relatable song if one doesn't try to dissect it lyric by lyric and it has a very beautiful melody. You're telling me a teenager wrote this? Crazy) 9. You Belong with Me (always happy when it comes on. I have very fond memories of watching the music video; love the clap clap and how much part of the fan experience it is. Am not always in the mood for it though but will always bop if it comes up somewhere in a store or on the radio) 10. Shake it off (look, I have considered putting it in last place. It's a song I've never liked, not even when performed live. It feels too loud. What made me reconsider the position? How iconic it is - half the world knows it and it had a huge moment when it came out, and the recent performance she did for TEU - the country-fied version made me have a moment with it I hadn't had in ten years) 11. I Think He Knows (really like it while listening to Lover; often skip it if it comes up on shuffle. I'll say, I like the verses and the bridge more than the chorus. But it doesn't stand on its own. Loved the video! I think y’all are sleeping on YBWM. We have to think culturally about that song, not just how it affects us now. That song was the gateway to her success (imho). That song made fellow underdogs like myself relate deeply to her. It really framed how we saw Taylor, it made her one of us. She made us feel seen. I’m a therapist and one of my teenage clients told me that her favorite song is YBWM. It’s timeless! So it would have been my second ranking right after Mirrorball, #1. Anyone else agree?

For me, I don’t need to actually relate to a song to love a song. With songs like 22 or maybe Fifteen, I can go back to when I was those ages and my first day of high school and I still feel like I am that version of myself inside. It’s hard to explain. Me right now is all the past versions of me combined because I still vividly remember how I felt as a child, as a teenager, and at all the different phases of adulthood. They’re still inside of me even now. That’s why I sob during songs like seven because somewhere inside of me, there is that seven year old girl. Do I even make sense?

Tortured Poets for me was MY album! It changed my life entirely. In so many ways. I was a Swiftie from the very beginning but I didn’t know anyone else in my life that loved music the way I do so I was on my own. I was oblivious to the fact that there was an entire online community of people that I could connect with because I was older (I’m 47) and busy raising my 4 kids and I only used YouTube to look up random things here and there. I used to make fun of my kids for constantly watching gamers playing video games! Like, why don’t you just play the games yourself??? Fast forward to now, and I have spent the better part of the year watching people react to music. It might be my favourite thing to do! So I get it now. When I heard Tortured Poets for the first time with the whole surprise double album, I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I desperately NEEDED to talk to people about it. I actually felt literally sick and I had never experienced anything like this before. It was so so so good! And that’s when I discovered YOU! Thank goodness. Like, you don’t understand how much my life has changed because of this album. It has been actual therapy for me. It sounds like a cliche but it’s true. TTPD forever! 🤍

Loved the ttpd chat at the end. It was such an intense and unique release, so much hype and guess work before we got it, and then being overwhelmed by how much music we got and how unexpected the focus was. My favorite aspects of this crazy time were when she released the playlists around the stages of grief, it was so fascinating to get that insight and your reaction was a favorite. I also was blown away by getting to see this music on tour so quickly, so HS, the smallest man, these things had just happened to her and she got to immediately put them on stage, but also process and let go...what a time!

I have some thoughts about maroon and you’re on your own kid. If you watch her play those, they seem really difficult for her to sing the way they just ramble on. I think she chose not to sing them because they were really difficult for her to do with all of that dancing that was happening during the midnight set. I could be totally wrong, but I think that She may have thought about it and then realized I just can’t do all that breath work within the midnight set. Anyone have this thought?

So interesting what you said in the end. In my experience, I feel like I was able to enjoy TTPD and feel it as “my” album because I never read or watched any of the expectations about it - I believe I didn’t even know what the song titles were! I guess I was not using social media that much at the time and consequently I was disconnected from all of it. Then when I listened to it, most of the songs hit so beautifully and I could relate to them through my own life experiences so easily, which made me love the album so deeply :) just sharing my experience!

I was thinking about what you guys were saying about “I Think He Knows” and I fathomed something about Lover as an album. You know how when Speak Now (TV) came out and we all collectively fathomed that it was essentially a pop punk album? Well I think that Lover is a classic old-timey 50’s & 60’s doo-wop -she -bop kind of album! Sorry if that doesn’t make sense but I mean like a bubblegum classic pop album. That’s the vibe I am getting. Even her outfits in the music videos and her hair style are that 60’s aesthetic. So with that in mind, the album makes perfect sense as a concept album. It reminds me of when Meghan Trainor first started and early Charlie Puth music. I hope I make sense lol!

I did not read any song name before it came out and I think it really made me appreciate the album a lot more. I had no expectations, the only thing I thought was it was a break up album because it was after her and Joe. I don't see that at all. Since the og's came back, we've really gotten to see how Bonny and Emily have been able to reconnect to those older versions of the songs after experiencing new feelings and analyzing them on a new level as the tv's have released. If anyone was just watching them for the first time with these recent Taylor vids, it's very clear that they love Taylor's music. It's their love for her discography that allows them to speak so analytically about them, because they can compare and explore why some songs or albums resonate more than others. Also, their last track ranking vid was full of praise for those songs because they were arguably some of Taylor's best work ever, and the track 6's are generally not as strong or well-received so of course this video wasn't going to be full of praise for every single song. If you have an issue with Bonny and Emily having honest discussions around Tay's music, maybe consider making your own videos on her music, and you can be as uncritical as you please. X

I think that by analyzing so much and having a lot of speculations about the album, TTPD ended up being a bit of a whiplash for you. It made you realize that you didn’t actually know what many of her past songs were about, which can feel a bit disheartening or deflating, especially since you girls are so devoted to Taylor. TTPD kind of serves as proof that you were wrong about a lot of little things regarding her life between Lover and TTPD. And while it’s obviously not that serious, it might still feel subconsciously off-putting.

Love this - I totally feel you on the TTPD/outside noise commentary. Not that it changed my relationship with the album so much, but it made me realise how 'contentified' music journalism has become and how rapid the pace of it is - it felt like publications (as well as creators) were rushing to publish reviews and responses just for the sake of being first/grabbing the attention and clicks, rather than sitting with the music and actually creating well thought out responses that add something to the conversation. I know what you mean about TTPD. I think for me it showed me that I didn’t know Taylor as well as I thought I did. I had made so many assumptions about her life that TTPD showed were totally untrue. At first it felt weird, like I felt so disconnected from the version of Taylor I had made in my head. Now it’s my number 2 Taylor album of all time. I just feel like it’s one of her most honest albums, brutal and scathing sometimes, but once I got passed the shock it’s like I’m seeing the real Taylor for the first time in years. I feel bad for putting her on an impossible pedestal when she’s just a girl. She’s always been just a girl with so much love and emotion and a need to write it all, and seeing her for that person was so refreshing and honestly healing for my inner child in a lot of ways… like I was able to unlock pieces of myself that I had buried for a long time to fit into societal expectations or just to please the people in my life. TTPD gave me the courage to confront that just like Taylor did with all of us, and it feels so fresh and freeing!

Also all the speculation of whether she’d add it to the set list was so exciting. i have a deeply tortured relationship with 22. when i was that i age, i celebrated it so much, felt seen, felt like i had something in common with taylor. but obviously you grow up and at a certain point i also really don´t want to be 22 anymore (lol). i feel like with 22 it´s like passing the torch to the next generation around that age. it´s for them to celebrate it and feel it but i did my time being 22, now i would rank it at the bottom.
