Loved this reaction! And yes, I would love a deep dive, or more than one, as many and as often as feels right for you. Zane has a gift for meeting his interview subjects where they are, and I loved hearing your insights as the interview progressed. It’s interesting that this album to me doesn’t feel contextually linked to Solar Power at all. It feels like a giant leap.

Loved your discussion and keen to hear more of your thoughts!!! To me, the mission statement on Virgin really is "I don't belong to anyone." Not to a partner, not to the public's perception/expectation, not even to her mother – she's sought the approval of these three for so long, and she's even reckoning with the fact that some of these ties are beyond her control ("There's broken blood in me"). But ultimately, she is her own person and deals with what it means to be herself without being sculpted (like the statue of David) through seeking that approval ("Hope you find another starlet, … as for me, I'm going back to the clay"). Before the release, Lorde shared the following on her IG and it really helped me understand why "Virgin" is the perfect title: "The word 'virgin,' some say, was derived from a Greek word that meant 'not attached to a man, a woman who was 'one-in-herself.' Goddesses like Ishtar (Assyrian-Babylonian), Diana (Roman), Astarte (Greek) and Isis (Egyptian) were called virgins not because they were inexperienced but because they were strong and independent. There is also evidence that the word 'virgin' derived from the combination of the Latin words 'vir-' (for man, as in 'virile') and 'gyne' (for woman, as in gynecology) - a man-woman or androgynous person."

Honestly, it’s actually quite good for people to sit on floors/hard ground. It helps with mobility in hips etc. A lot of adults actually loose that possibility from sitting in chairs to much. But maybe hours on end every weeks is too much 🤷‍♀️😅

I think in the context of what Em is saying she is rather meaning ”no one cares for a man to STAY a virgin” whereas for women there is virtue in that still, even if not in the same way it has historically been there still is a huge difference in how it’s viewed when a woman is sexually active as opposed to when a man is. I don’t think Em means to say there isn’t any pressure on men relating to their sexuality, just that there is no virtue in them staying ”pure”.

I keep writing down stuff she says and as an architect, I deeply appreciated her comment on Virgin’s production : “It was like a construction site, this weird little zone of scaffolding, (…) , we barely put the walls up. I kept saying ‘load bearing pillars only’ as it pertained to the production, no adornment, no nice finishing on the wall, only what we need.”

Yes full breakdown please!! Lorde is such a poet like her mother interestingly! So some people will not get it and others will that’s just art. We all definitely get it!! I think you're absolutely right, why are Aussies and Kiwis like this??? In some ways it feels like the rest of the world is becoming a bit more like that these days too, everyone is scared to be 'cringe' and people so quickly try to pull others down when they're doing something different. I love embracing Lorde like she's our own and celebrating that she's from this part of the world. I can't fathom that others dont feel the same!!

I loved this interview so much. Thank you ladies for highlighting it and having such a thoughtful discussion. This album is so special and I really connect to it as someone who has struggled with an ED, external approval, and shame and nostalgia for the past at the same time. My therapist specializes in EDs and we’ve talked before about how gender fluidity can help people with ED history detach themselves from beauty standards and body image. It helps abstract what being a woman actually means and help you realize you’re just in a body without any societal ideals or pressure. I wonder if those things are connected for Lorde and it’d be interesting to explore that if y’all do consider an album breakdown! P.S. my favorite is If She Could See Me Now so glad we share that in our top three. 🫶 love y’all

Both offer different tones and a different focus (Triple J focuses a lot on the production choices and Jake Shane is more informal and Taylor is briefly mentioned!) These enlightened poetic women are seriously taking me on a wild journey of self-discovery and empowerment as a woman. Artists like Lorde and Taylor and Lana. Like Mariner’s Apartment Complex made me see the dynamic between my husband and I in a completely new light. I am not weak!
