Dress at 3?! Bonnie girl are you ok? 😂 of course just jokes, 12s are a strong batch. I love your point about loml, and it not being believable. Incredible bridge. But the sentiment “you’re the loss of my life” felt more like she was just going for the flip, than for how true it rang. She’s talking through the verses about how much he sucks, and what a betrayal it is. She didn’t lose him. He left. I do agree that it’s not quite right, for how beautifully it’s constructed.

I wonder if Bonny's point about loml not being believable could come from Taylor writing this at the moment she felt it, and recorded it when she didn't anymore. I feel like this song captures such a momentary feeling, that maybe she didn't relate to it anymore at the time of recording it, and you can hear that in the way it is recorded.

OK Bonny I have a way for you to think about loml. It’s about matty, but it’s not about the man Matty. It’s about the concept of having somebody who you are so sure for so long is perfect for you, and then you find out he’s not. She never says you’re the love of my life to the man in the song. All she says is you’re the loss of my life. And the way I take that is I have lost not just you, but the idea of you and the idea that there would always be a possibility with this person who she thought was perfect.

loml is so interesting to me because it’s really one of the only Taylor songs where there’s no resolution and I wonder if that’s why people might feel a disconnect. There’s not a huge build or a cathartic release or a happy ending, it’s just sad. The lyric “ what a bland goodbye” encapsulates it perfectly.

I feel similar about loml Bonny! And for me I think it might be because not only is the melody not progressing that much but also I don’t feel like a progressing cohesive story is being told. It is more like a train of thoughts on the person or a fathoming of how he wasn’t what she had painted him in her head. So while I do like the song a lot it does not play out like a movie in my mind like others of her songs do, which for me usually makes it feel much more real

Loml is one of my favorite songs Taylor has ever written, like Emily says, the melodies and the poetry is just next level to me. I can’t relate to the song for shit but it’s the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. I don’t even necessarily relate it to MH either, listening to it just feels like eating a really nice piece of chocolate lol. I love Peter too and it was one of my surprise songs (yay!). It’s a perfect song with one exception, and that is that I’m not a big fan of the chorus. Something about the repetitiveness rubs me the wrong way. The rest of the song and the bridge in particular saves it and makes it a top tier song. But I do prefer loml

The thing about loml is that, while it is a beautiful song, it feels a tiny bit gimmicky. The title helps create a twist ending, but that only works for the first listen. It also has an unsatisfying abrupt ending, which fits the subject matter perfectly, but it does create a situation where you (as a listener) wish there would have been just a little more resolution, musically, after she sings, "You're the loss of my life."

This was interesting lol For me, a 12 song list that has Haunted as one of the songs, well that’s easy. It’s number 2 on that is difficult. I love Peter, but loml has a hold on me that I can’t explain. I think it’s one of her best songs. I love it because it is haunting, and I can make an argument for it being about both men. TTPD is a masterpiece, but I can argue that about a lot of her albums lol I love that you both put a lot of thought into your rankings, and can articulate why you feel that way. I love that you can even convince each other to change the order because you know each other so well. I agree with you, Bonny about IOMWIWY being about friends and not a man lol Another great video - even if a cup of tea had to be sacrificed ☺️

30:22 I think the missing piece of the puzzle for you, Bonnie it is: in "Loml" that the feeling that permeates this whole song is illusion and false belief. It's the feeling that you believed in that person, in the sense of, "I believed what you were telling me and selling me," and that's what's painful. We can relate to songs like "Mastermind," where you feel that calculating, planning, and visionary side of Taylor. So, for her in "Loml," she's saying, "I really believed what you said, and I wasn't expecting to be deceived like that, because I'm a mastermind, I shouldn't be fooled". It's almost that popular saying: "the wand turned against the wizard." Phrases like: "the coward claimed he was a lion," "your impressionist paintings of the heaven that turned out to be fakes," or "you said I was the love of your life about a million times" emphasize that. Another ttpd song that also emphasize this is Ttpd (Title Track) where you can see that deception/humor satire: "you are not Dylan Thomas and I'm not Pati Smith" but also how she fully believed that they were meant to be when she says it on the bridge or "who's gonna know you like me" so It's almost that Loml is the sister of the Ttpd title track. Because It's like less humoristic and satirical and she really saying "I belived in you, I fall for it, and I didn't see it coming". And I don't think we have any progression either sonically or story-wise, because he ghosted her. Literally out of nowhere, so all he left her with was this realization that she fell for what he sold her and that he abandoned her, something she didn't expect him to do.

Bonny I think you dont “believe” loml because you’re taking it as a song that comes from a devastated/sad place (it used to happen to me) but then I realized that it sounds like it comes from a place of disappointment and anger (it starts with hopeful lyrics and they slowly turn into disappointment) he’s not the loss of her life, it’s the time she wasted with him

Bonny, The Best Day is my favorite song on Fearless. I love it soooo much, it hits extra hard for me because I have 2 daughters as well. I love LOML, but its probably more mid range for me. Its so beautiful, and I adore the lyrics, but I do agree there are so many other hard hitting songs on TTPD, like Peter. Peter is #3 for me on TTPD.

I am someone who LOVES the best day - it was one of the first songs I learnt on my guitar when I was like 9 or 10 so has always been special to me, even though I’m not super super close with my mum. I have to say I am a huge the best day stan!! It’s the song that made me fall in love with Taylor’s swifts writing! I have never related to a song more, I have a very similar relationship with my mum that Taylor has with hers and a similar family unit. Also in high school I was bullied and my mum would do exactly what Taylor’s mum did and have day withs me that helped me through it all. So you are not the only fighter for best day Bonnie!! This is one of my fave songs and I can’t listen to it that often cause makes me cry 🥹 I had to say this cause I am a deep stan of this song!! It’s defs in my top 30 best Taylor’s songs! It also really relates to Thank you Aimiee about bullies at her school and that searing pain. I’m totally the person who loves loml and doesn’t relate as much to peter. I think for me I don’t relate to peter as I get the pining for someone but not for years and also not if there’s been a moment and it didn’t work - I’ll be running for the hills in that case after a sufficient cry/heartbreak. Like the chorus just kinda kills the song for me. I do still think it’s pretty and I love the verses and the bridge but I would relate much more to those without the chorus cause I do sometimes wonder/daydream about people from the past and how things could’ve been different but not to the extent where that ever is a ‘real’ option. I don’t know, I’m kind of fathoming as I type so it might not make the most sense.

My top 5 is basically interchangeable depending on the moment/mood, I really love a track 12, turns out! I’m with Bonny on loml being objectively a great song, but just not believable enough to be hard-hitting. For me it's that sad realization of her that she spend a decade trying to outrun her desertion of him and for 4 years she wrote fictional songs daydreaming about him or songs that she was falling in love with him again that she was hiding against the public. Bonny, I am also a The Best Day stan! It doesn't crack my top 30, but I love the song so much and I always tear up when she sings "and I love you for giving me your eyes, staying back and watching me shine", even though I don't have that type of relationship to my mother either. Another unpopular opinion is that I can absolutely listen to songs like Ronan, Soon You'll Get Better and Epiphany without falling into a deep pit of depression. Oh definitely! That's what I meant by it fitting the subject matter of the song. But just because you can understand WHY it sounds that way, it doesn't automatically mean you have to enjoy the way it sounds. Closure is a good example of this. There was clearly a thematic reason behind the pots/pans production, but a lot of people still don't enjoy the song. (Not me, I'm a Closure stan!)

I also have never fathomed loml. I think maybe for me it's because it's too poetic, it feels like she's trying a bit too hard with it. And sometimes when something is too poetic it becomes less accessible, like it's too much work to fully follow what she's saying to easily access the emotions and what she means. I totally get what Bonny means about loml not feeling believable. I do really like that song, but it doesn't pull at my heartstrings because I can't get past it being about a man she had a rebound fling with. It's so intense and emotional for such a blip on her life's radar. I know she felt resigned and fed up with Joe rather than devastatingly heartbroken over their breakup, but still, a song like loml seems more fitting for a long-term relationship. I fully thought it was about Joe on the first few listens until I really paid attention to the lyrics.

I feel like sweet nothing she sounds kind of annoyed or bored with the relationship. The way she’s singing “you say what a mind, this happens all the time” (I always thought it sounds like she’s rolling her eyes when she sings that lyric) like that’s all Joe would end up saying to her with everything she showed or read to him. He stopped maybe caring to dig deeper into her and maybe started just assuming he knows her enough and that made her feel lonely.

I fell down a Swiftie rabbit hole tonight of making lists to rank all of the track 1s, 2s, and so on, and then analyzed to figure out which albums have the best songs overall, mathematically speaking at least. Folklore ended up #1, followed by Evermore, Reputation, and Red. Reputation was the only album that had 0 least favorite songs for me, and TTPD/Anthology had a surprising amount of least liked songs. Track 11s and Track 3s were the hardest to rank. So many superior songs!

I am team loml over peter. I think they are about similar topics and they both give me a similar emotion. I'm more impressed by the imagery of a young couple waltzing in a cemetery. In my mind, when we first meet them, we just see a young couple in love but as the song progresses you realize they are just ghosts who don't yet know they are gone and have no future. While I love peter I think I'm less impressed by the reliance on another person's characters/the story of peter pan.

I just want to say I agree that loml doesn’t feel as emotional as some other songs on the album. But I imagine it comes from a place of grief after you’ve gone through several stages of anger and denial, and for me loml is totally written from a depressed state where you’ve already felt so much that you are mentally, emotionally, physically drained, and now you’re just letting your mind gravitate towards what happened and that’s why it might come off as un-emotional, but it actually is very emotional, it’s just coming from a depressed emotional stage

When it comes to loml, I see a lot of people saying that their relationship was too short lived for such a devastating song, which could be why Bonny has trouble believing it or connecting with it. Their relationship was so much more than just a few weeks in 2023. I think we really need to consider that she was pining after Matty for 10 years. Seeing it through this lens helped me connect with the song SO much more. It helped me understand that the pain doesn’t just stem from him wronging her now, but it was that in addition to all of the built up tension and the many unanswered questions about their relationship that have completely tormented her over the years. She has spent years dreaming about him and what could’ve been. She hoped he would come back to her, and when he did, he did it when she was vulnerable and needed it most. He assured her he had changed, and that this time it would be different. No wonder Taylor was saying things like “my life finally makes sense” during the time she was dating him in 2023. It’s like something finally clicked for her. I mean, calling someone your twin is intense. She believed they were meant to be!! Then to just turn around and completely ghost her?????? No wonder she was gutted. He promised her the world and just dumped her when she thought she had finally found what she had been dreaming about all these years. It’s an incredibly beautiful song and definitely my #1 out of all the track 12s (and honestly very close to cracking my top 5 of all time)

loml is a top 5 in Taylor’s discography for me. I felt a connection with it even before it came out. That being said, I feel like it is one of those songs that was a fleeting moment of SO MANY emotions all compiled chaotically, yet beautifully, into a poetic masterpiece; however, still fleeting like Bonny was saying. Coming from a HUGE Stan of loml, I really loved hearing the other perspective on it. I think it’s one of those songs that if it clicks for you, it REALLY snaps on tight… But if it doesn’t click for you, it’s just beautiful but nothing more than just respectful acknowledgement for the lyrics.

Then my dad got Sick with cancer and of Course that was horrible and scary. And then I listened to this Song and it helped me to process my feelings and for me it is a really hopeful Song. I really was like „soon you‘ll get better, cause you have to“. That Song Gave Me Hope and really helped me when i was so devastated and scared. I was ready to write a whole essay on loml but then I watched what you said about Peter and I realized that actually, my feelings for these songs are just swapped. I love Peter and I think it's gorgeous and the lyrics are amazing, but it's just never really been one that has made me feel anything really, whereas loml is easily in my top 10 of TS songs that I feel the deepest in my soul. It's so interesting how even though technically, these songs aren't so different from one another, we can still form such different relationships with them.

It's kind of wild how different your rankings are in this one haha. 1. I'm Only Me When I'm With You: get this song in your ears in some decent headphones. The vibe is perfection. Beautiful sentiment and I love the melodies. 2. I Know Places: Ridiculously underrated song, it is unfathomable to me that it's the least streamed on 1989. The atmosphere, the vocals, lyrics, "loose lips sink ships all the damn time", like hello? 3. Peter: such beautiful storytelling, lyricism, and melodies. The simplicity of the piano is so key to its identity. 4. Haunted: this goes so hard, and I desperately want Taylor to go anywhere near this level of "big" again. 5. Mad Woman: once you get past the scratchy strings at the beginning that I hate, this song is perfectly executed for what it's about and trying to do. 6. Long Story Short: I just love how oddly concise the melody pattern is and how it's wrapped around her lyrics. 7. The Best Day: I totally get your points about this song. It's so beautiful and sentimental. 8. Sad Beautiful Tragic: I really respect this song, but it's not my vibe most of the time 9. loml: I'm really glad Bonny said what she did about this one. I don't buy it either, and I think TTPD has this problem across the board. I think it's because its vocals are very stylised, which makes it too deliberate and over thought to be genuine. The loud, heaving sighs in The Smallest Man are another example, because like, ok Taylor I get it lol you don't have to make sure you keep sighing so that I understand the vibe. 10. Sweet Nothing: I don't really care about this song but the bridge is a nice moment. 11. Soon You'll Get Better: exactly the same thoughts as you, enough said there. 12. Dress: I don't care about Dress, I think it's a bit try hard and I don't care for the lyrical content or breathy vocals

Ok I do feel the need to stand up for Sweet Nothing! I feel like this song was almost a goodbye song to Joe, acknowledging the gratitude she had for the time they were together, but also realizing he wasn't giving her what she needed to move into the next phase of her life. It feels like a really appropriate bittersweet song to capture what it can be like to say goodbye to someone that you thought would be with you forever. I think it fits Midnights perfectly because she was maybe still going back and forth in her own head, wondering if the "sweet nothing" that she felt with him should be enough for her or not. I feel like this song is both a comforting ode to what secure love can feel like, and a reminder that just because something feels safe doesn't mean it's right forever.

I am really interested in learning why she picked loml over the prophecy. Maybe she felt like loml was better written, but I think loml is too bridge heavy. Loml also suffers by mixed muse syndrome. Loved this! LMOL - hear me out. There IS progression in the song and it IS haunting. Our girl heard for 10 years she was the love oml from him and she believed it, went for it, and then realized she was fooled. The progression is that it turns out he was the loss oml. And wow is our girl haunted - she can't believe she fell for it, she LOST herself in him, she LOST her faith in love, she is pissed and numb and haunted. The BRAIDS OF LIES she has to comb through over the last 10 years. Her lyrics are exaggerated because he tortured her and the way she sings it is numb, the way she titles it is disconnected because that is how she is purging it. In this way, it is soooo human - she was traumatized, she lost her balance and it shook her. It was my #1. PETER - now she has matured, grown, learned from her mistakes, has perspective, and tells the story from the beginning and wraps it up with a big magical bow. It is perfection. But LOML is in the moment, raw, sad, pain. I believe both songs 100%. Peter is my #2. Mad Woman was my #3 for the reasons Bonny mentioned. The Best Day was my #4 for similar reasons Bonny mentioned. I had an emotionally abusive dysfunctional childhood with a really messed up family. But I am also a cycle breaker and this song is so HOPEFUL - it is what I am aiming for as a mom with my family. It is like a warm hug. BONNY i totally get your qualms with loml. for ME, the issue is the modal/major key its sung in instead of a minor. i think a sonically subtle song that is meant to be sad is best written in a minor key, especially when that piano is whats driving the song. i also think taylor feels somewhat.. i guess disconnected from it?? it feels like she's about done grappling with the situation and she's just wrapping it up into what it was. the concept of someone being the one FOR you, a soulmate of some sort, or the love of your life, is better done on peter. it's magical just as you described it and thats what makes it more devastating to me. and finally i agree that it feels one and done. to taylor, loml was a song she needed to write in order to let go and i think it served its purpose. listening to it just feels like harping on it for me

You know what’s funny, Bonny.. is that how you feel about loml and not “believing it,” I don’t believe Peter as much as I do with loml. I can really respect it, and I love hearing your two perspectives being different from mine. I feel like she was at different times in her processing for Peter vs. loml and I personally just *resonate with* the latter processing more. Girls, first of all, you both look so gorgeous (as always)! I completely agree with you Bonny regarding The Best Day, it is such a beautiful song, can’t believe she wrote that when she was so young. I literally cried the first time I listened to it and it still makes me so emotional. Sad Beautiful Tragic is definitely one of her best songs in Red in my opinion. Also Peter is top 1 for me as well. And regarding Sweet Nothing, to me it still hits. I think the soft, lovely piano represents that comforting feeling of being with someone you’re used to being with, but the lyrics explain how she is realizing that this person is just willing to stay in that comfort zone with her and not take her hand and wreck her plans! Which is honestly something I can relate to, sometimes men seem to stop being interested in growing a relationship or putting effort into it once they already “got” you.

It WAS fake, and that’s why it’s difficult to process why you “can’t get out bed/because something counterfeit’s dead.” The sonics are giving carefully, systemically combing through the braids of lies, not weeping.

No no no no no. You two can not be saying that loml is the same the whole way through. It starts with literally just a piano and by the time we get to the end of the bridge “it was unnecessary, should’ve let it stay buried” there is a whole and full atmosphere of sound that is happening and has gradually been building up to that point . And the urgency in her voice has gradually escalated till that point and then when she says “oh what a valiant roar, what a bland goodbye” she has this exhaustion in her voice so it goes back down and wow ugh like yes its subtle but it is not the same!!

The Best Day brings me so so much comfort when I am anxious, as someone who feels like my early childhood was the best part of my life. It also brings me to tears when I watch the lyric videos to see her family grow up and stick by her. loml and Peter were both songs I didn't understand the hype over on the first release of TTPD, but they have grown on me a ton. Same for Dress! Soon you'll get better is special to me as my mom had and survived breast cancer right around the release of Lover, and it is sonically a beautiful song.

I believe LOML. The way she says “about a million times” is the way my voice kinda breaks if I’m singing and trying not to cry. But I will say when she sang it at my Paris show, I didn’t feel the emotion the way I do in the recorded version and it was almost jarring. She was almost suppressing a smile. I think she couldn’t hide how she feels now. ☺️

It’s interesting to hear you (Bonny) say you don’t “believe” in the feeling on LOML, bc I had to evaluate the song more to understand how it didn’t hit for you in that way. It feels like poetry written after all of the crying and humiliation and anger and sadness has consumed someone and what they’re left with is the melancholy remembrance of something. It feels empty and exhausted and almost void of emotion, simply because you only have the words left to express it all.

Okay, so I would just like to come to bat for The Best Day and say, maybe I'm a weirdo, but is actually my favourite TS song. I know Taylor has sooooo many songs that have a lot more complex sound & writing, but the emotional connection that I have with this song is just at a different level to anything else. I can't listen to it without crying, and I relate to it a lot. This song almost instantly transports me back to some of my fondest and most formative moments in my childhood every time I listen to it. (And my little brother is definitely better than I am - inside and out!)

Then to finally be able to be with that person who fed your hopes and dreams…presume it’s the happily ever after that most hopeless romantics imagine…well, it’s devastating! Bonny, I find your take on titles very interesting! I’ve never thought about that before, but I think you bring up something very valid. Also, when it comes to the chorus of Peter, i believe the chorus is just her repeating that line because she’s stuck on that one thing. He made her a promise and that’s what kept her going so she can’t begin to fathom that he didn’t come find her. I understand that feeling of disbelief so well and it hits me so hard every time.

I agree I don't believe loml either...and maybe she believed at some point in time but I wonder if she would say today that Matty was the loss of her life or would she say good riddance. Loml to me is like a poetic unraveling of emotions and feels dense, but very real. I don't like listening to it a lot, but sometimes I just need to and then it's so beautiful and healing. It's such a different song than Peter, so hard to compare them. Peter is more like a story and gives more room to invite the listener in and I can understand that it touches people more. Loml feels like it's written from stream of consciousness, but in Taylor's case that means whatever comes out in that flow is superior and poetic, but not necessary presented in an easily digestible way: every word has a lot of story + layers thus weight in it. With Peter it's like you said, an overview after the storm. There are no braids left to unravel. Also in a poetic way, but it almost sounds like it is written with us listeners in mind, so we can follow the story. Two totally different songs, both are so great 🌟

My loml thoughts: I think the way this song feels empty is on purpose, because SHE feels empty. The whole song has the same feeling she does when writing it- a deep emptiness that she has never felt before and has been in since. She believed in him when no one else did and chose this cyclone with him, only to feel like a complete fool. She feels tricked and betrayed and devastated. The imagery at the end is so haunting- I picture him with sad, but empty, eyes as he looks right at her and drops a match that sets her dreams & the life she pictured with him on fire.

I feel SOOOOO strongly about loml. The entire song is so hauntingly beautiful and devastating in a way that reminds me of Sad Beautiful Tragic. The difference with loml is this emptiness in her voice and emotion because that's exactly how she felt. The delivery of the studio recording of loml reminds me of the voice memo for My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, or the beginning of The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. It's that same emptiness, but she stays there and lives in it throughout loml because that's what her life was when she wrote it - Mondays in an endless February. As a girlie who relates to loml very deeply, it's a very specific feeling that I think not everyone goes through. It isn't a classic breakup, it's the aftermath of a titanic swell of emotion that ended in deep betrayal, and when you're in it, it feels endless and hopeless. I doubt Taylor even relates to the sentiment that Matty is the loss of her life anymore, because the song captures a very unique moment in time. I also disagree that the song stays in the same place the whole time, but its build looks different. During the bridge and last chorus, the strings and background vocals pick up and swirl around her main vocals, almost like the imagery of paper swirling around her in the Fortnight music video. There's passion there, but not much, because she gave it all to him. It's almost like a wounded animal trying to pick itself up, but ultimately collapsing under the strain, just like how the song retreats into itself at the end. Guys thank you for fighting for Sad Beautiful Tragic! I think it truly is one of Taylor’s most under appreciated songs - I guess because it is so melancholic, but it’s one of my favourites because it truly captures a feeling and a moment. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, I am transported to a rainy train station or misty autumn day walking alone thinking about who I was and who I’ve become (and that’s not just in a romantic sense or because of a relationship, SBT just has such a strong bittersweet sense of nostalgia and reflection that I love. SBT walked so cardigan could run!). Alsooooo I like to think of SBT as the coin flip image of State of Grace (another of my favourites). For loml I do feel like there is a progression, it’s like remembering and reeling and as it approaches the bridge it switches to anger and feeling tricked and then at the end she switches to anger and like a subtle clap back : in the beginning it sounds like she misses him and at the end it sounds like she’s resentful and sees him for the coward he is

I have to agree with you, Bonny, about loml. It has some beautiful writing and it’s like I know it’s supposed to be devastating but it just doesn’t hit for me either. I don’t know why. (Although I LOVE Closure, it’s one of my top songs on Evermore.)
