We’ve shared first listens (well, watching your first listen *is* my first listen) since Folklore on your newly hatched YouTube channel. We don’t always have the same first impressions (Obviously. Art = Subjective), but the vibe you both (plus off-cameras 🌟VIPs🌟) put out there in the world is just so, so… is *comforting* an over-the-top thing to say? I think, as time goes on, what you’ve captured will just seem more and more special. Taylor doesn’t mention amber as much as she might, but that’s what you do. You capture these magical moments in amber. Forever. You honestly know the looks on your faces when you first heard an arrangement or caught a lyric or had your preconceptions bamboozled. And all of us get to look at them too. It’s patronising for someone not that much older than you to say, but your friendship is special. You share a passion, a home, a workplace. I hope when we’re all old and in very different points in our collective lives, you both take the time to occasionally look in the gorgeous jewellery box of memories you’ve created and preserved.

I totally agree! But another reason COULD be that it isn’t about Jeff at all (which is what everyone, me included, thought of immediately bc Forever Winter and the similarities). I think someone else from high school passed away while she was on the Eras tour (which was the whole premise for the album, that it was what happened in her life during this time). I just find it a little curious that she would write a song that many years after it happened and then put it on the album that is basically a love letter to her fiancé. I think the only reason for it to be on this album would be that it actually happened during the Eras tour and therefore is relevant to “the life of a showgirl”. I don’t know if I’m alone in this, haven’t seen anyone else talk about it 🙈

Pausing after Eldest Daughter because we’re 9 days in with this album on repeat and I cannot make it through that song without being wrecked in the most beautiful way😭 I am an eldest daughter with three younger brothers and I was yelled at at 9 years old that I was not a kid anymore and I needed to grow up and I believed it. I became a 3rd parent and have been working for years to unpack that and this song is seriously more effective than therapy. Being an eldest daughter impacts how I move through life and how I protect my siblings and others closest to me and she captures it SO PERFECTLY and beautifully. I also love the little bits we know about the two of you, that Emily is an eldest daughter and Bonny grew up in a more tumultuous family as a younger child and you two are such wonderful soulmates in the way Emily has made Bonny part of her family so Bonny feels stability and “home”, and Emily has struggled to feel safe expressing and processing emotions because as an eldest daughter there often isn’t time and space for you to do that, so you shove things down to keep the peace, but Bonny has allowed Emily the space and safety to be soft and feel things. And now we have “We Can’t Be Friends.” I don’t know. Just a thought I had.

I understand the vision, but I think in that moment, when she steps on the ground and it breaks, it’s because the floor is fragile — IT’S DELICTAE - it was a bad time to be in a relationship with everything that was going on, and yet she still felt welcome through it all. When she steps, it’s like glass shattering, and at the end she jumps and everything breaks because she no longer cares. I don’t see the lightning image on the floor, but I do see Taylor’s Reputation era — the media attacks, her mom’s cancer, the sale of her masters, the end of friendships, and the insecurity of a relationship, an album with halted promotion because of the pandemic, the pandemic itself, the breakup, the spark of a new love and its failure — all like storm bolts to dodge. She really kept dodging all those strikes, moving through them toward the light. In any case, I love that we can all see different things that make sense to us.

For me eldest daughter it touch on how th eldest childs in trying to be someone to be looked up to for the younger one and also being the first one to experiment life has to build this armor this toughest exterior cause usually are the eldest child that has less tolerance for mistakes and is also the one that the younger can (or has) relied on, so is this responsibility that come with being the older. So in the bridge for me is in order to fulfill those expectations as an eldest daughter I said things that were dumb like ( I don't need this or that or I don't miss being just a child) or leave innocent things in order to keep this armor and not be weak for the sake of the youngest child and even sometimes the parents and in a sense you think that you won't be able to never show that soft side cause you have been doing it all your life. So for me I think that she is talking a little bit to herself, like admiting that she cares, that she is soft, that things hurt her but she is the one that is going to protect her inner child, that she is vowing her that she won't abandon her and let others pass over her, letting her inner child be and she will protect that. That's why I thing she says the younger child felt was raised up in the wild and now is home, because she is the home of her inner child. GUYS IVE HAD A FATHOMING. I don’t know if anyone else has commented this but I have to get the thought out before I look. The way she talks to the youngest child at the end and she keeps saying “I’m never gonna leave you out” throughout the song, I think that refers to how the baby of the family often can feel left out because their older siblings start a new phase of their life that they aren’t a part of. I thought of this because of my own kids. They’re 27, 22, and 18 now but when my youngest was little and my older son was like middle school/young teens there was a time where my youngest still wanted to play and hang out with my older son but he wasn’t in that place anymore. I would encourage him to still spend time with his little brother but I also had to honor where he was in his life and that he deserves to be the age he is too you know? And my youngest would be so sad and didn’t understand why his big brother didn’t want to play anymore. Having had days to marinate in the album, I’m struck by how successfully Taylor has completed the extremely difficult feat of evolving from child to adult in the public eye. I know she was well into her teens when she found success, but she was in the industry for years at that point. Music or film, show business is littered with the careers (and bodies) of stars who didn’t make manage that. For every Jodie Foster there are 100 Dana Platos. For every Stevie Wonder there’s Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Aaron Carter. For her to be able to evolve from writing about celeb crushes to writing cheeky odes to her fiancé’s physical virtues is something to behold in a world that tries to keep young female pop stars virgins or whores. Remember our collective gasps at the opening line of Folklore? That cold-water splash of hearing her say “I’m on some new shit” faded quickly, and now everyone knows her verbal arsenal is as arch and periodically explicit as anyone’s. She can now sing “we tell the whole world to leave us the fuck alone” in a non-rage-y song that’s name-checked as many interviewers’ favourite as oppose to a pearl-clutching headline about the fall of America’s sweetheart. Twenty years in, and she’s the template for successfully navigating the insanity that is the life of a showgirl.

I have been thinking about “Ruin the Friendship”, and wondering if the key lines in the song are “My advice is always ruin the friendship, better that than regret it for all time. My advice is always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your life.” What “Question” do we know Taylor was asking, apparently for many years, and where do we most recently see her talking about giving advice? It takes me back to Midnights - specifically to Question..? and Dear Reader. Given that the unspoken Question she posed in that album seems to have been surrounding MH, it makes me wonder if she was thinking about this high school story in connection to how long she had been holding that question - whether he was destined to be her “the one”? This song tells a sad story about losing a friend who she had wanted to kiss, maybe to see if there could be something more between them, but never did. She feels regret that she didn’t act on it, because what would have been so bad about doing so? At least she would know the answer, and wouldn’t still be wondering. I wonder if she might have been looking at how long she held MH in the back of her head, maybe believing he was really her soulmate - the one, but that the timing just hadn’t worked out yet for them to be together. So, she moved on and explored other relationships, but always kept him on this pedestal (or on a shelf?) in the back of her mind as this eternal question she never asked - “if one thing had been different, would everything be different today?” Later on, learning how things would implode so quickly when she finally did try to be with him, I would think she might look back and think - damn, if I had just been brave enough to really ask that question years ago, I would have gotten the same answer, and would have been able to process it and move on. I would not have kept the idea of him in reserve for so long. She might have been able to really figure out so much sooner what kind of person she wanted as a partner. Joe and Matty seem very different, but maybe were both those “tortured poets” kind of people, a bit depressive, men who would wither under the bright lights of being with her. It turns out maybe what she actually needed was someone with less directly in common with her on paper - someone who makes their own sunshine and brings that to her, rather than someone who shares her “tortured poet” inclinations. Getting back to RTF, I don’t think the point she’s making with the song is so much about the friend she lost, but more about the loss and regret you might experience by not being brave enough to act on your wishes, or not asking the question you’re holding onto. Even if the answer isn’t what you want it to be, it might set you free, and you might wish you had asked it so much sooner. Then you might have been open to finding something that turns out to be much better for you. And maybe because she’s no longer “falling apart”, Taylor feels better equipped to offer this advice than she was back in Midnights era, when she specifically told us not to take her advice, that she wasn’t in a position to offer it. Now she feels more stable and confident. She has clarity and can see the things she regrets not saying or doing, and recommend that others not let those things hold them back from building the life they really want. I am liking this song more every time I hear it.

I know no one cares but pls be careful about saying things like "she's like, I can be in my feminine now." That is dogwhistle language that has been widely popularized lately, and I hear people say it all the time. But when you think about what it's really implying--a woman's feminine side can only be brought out by a big masculine man, she doesn't have to think for herself anymore because his hand is on her back as he leads her to the car--you can see how this phrase is used to uphold the standards of the patriarchy. (I know maybe it doesn't seem that serious to some of y'all, but I've seen people say exactly that about Taylor and Travis. It's harmful rhetoric.) I think most people don't think about the harm this kind of language can cause, since the idea of finding a man who lets you "be in your feminine energy" is so huge right now in the dominant culture. But this rise in popularity of phrases with misogynist undertones is sadly unsurprising when the dominant culture is descending into fascism.

I had to add something after watching your comment during Opalite about “when you know you know”…I’m much older than you two, and met my husband at work when I was 41 and he was 54. We were both married to other people (very unhappily; I was actually already separated). Anyway long story short, it was truly love at first sight for both of us. It was terribly inconvenient and we had to go through hell to be together, which took a couple of years. But we both knew the moment we met that something had just happened. I just got to the part where Brae said Father Figure has Mad Men vibes and THAT'S SO TRUEEE! But she ends up being the biggest player...iconicc. It's such a captivating story, this song. It really takes you on a trip from suppression to empowerment. "The family" being a mafia thing but also a thing for Taylor's "small family business" is so genius and so funny. Also the lines about loyalty: I agree with Brae and I would say that "they don't make loyalty like they used to" is her throwing his line back to him like "you demanded loyalty, you framed it as a two way street, but then you changed and thought it exempted you". All the terms from the beginning change: What protecting the family means, what loyalty means, who's got the bigger dick, who's the devil etc. A lot stays the same on a superficial level but everything changes when it comes to the meaning of these words. It's still my favorite on the album!

I really appreciate this thoughtful comment Gabi! When Emily said it, it didn’t really rub me the wrong way but after reading your comment I do think it could have been phrased differently. Because in reality it’s less to do with feminine/masculine and more to do with feeling like you’re being taken care of. When you’re a person who’s used to taking care of everyone around you and in some ways sacrificing your own happiness and well-being to help someone else feel better (I’m a fire and I’ll keep your brittle heart warm) it is nice to feel like someone is looking after and taking care of you for once. And it sounds like that’s what it means to Taylor. And I agree that the language we use is important even when it’s a throwaway comment. We can always learn and be more deliberate about our word choices!

I think you projected a bit onto my comment, as if I was saying Taylor the person is doing something wrong by being happily in love. What I was referring to as wrong was specifically the projection of patriarchy onto Taylor and her relationship(s) by her audience. A lot of the rhetoric used online regarding the T&T relationship has misogynistic undertones. This isn’t something I made up in my mind—Taylor herself addressed this issue when she said it’s shockingly offensive that people expect her to end her career just because she’s getting married. Travis being “a gentleman” and “her biggest protector” is not misogynistic, if those are traits Taylor wants in a partner then that’s great for her and not a problem. Language implying that Travis is the only reason Taylor feels comfortable to express her femininity, though, can skirt the line of misogyny. When we bring gender roles into the conversation, it is no longer just a conversation of what Taylor wants in a partner, and can uphold harmful stereotypes. The rhetoric of a man finally allowing a woman to “be in her feminine” can seem harmless to people like (presumably) you, who are part of the dominant culture, but that doesn’t mean it has no harmful impact on those of us in other subcultures.

So watching this again, can never get enough of new album reactions. So with father figure I had a thought, maybe way of but what the hoo, Scot was quoted somewhere about wanting to start a race car team and in order to do it need to sell his music company. He couldn’t sell Taylor her masters because the rest of the company wouldn’t be worth anything without out her masters, hence he needed to sell to Scooter to maximise his profit. In the bridge of the song she talks about the ignition as in car ignition. Just silly musings but it might fathom something

I just had a thought about Actually Romantic ... "Hadn't thought of you in a long time, but you keep sending me funny valentines." Kim Kardashian sent Taylor perfume for Valentines as some kind of patronizing joke after Reputation. What an obscure random fact that I just learned about. "And one day, your kid comes home singing a song that only us two is gonna know is about you." I'm now envisioning North listening to TLOS and it would be hilarious if that actually happened.

the problem with that theory is that at this point, what has kim (or kanye) said or done to taylor lately? because the song is speaking in present tense, not past, as if kim is STILL sending those valentines. while i'm sure she/they were on her mind and are just one example of such people while writing the song, it doesn't exactly fit too well imo. also, "funny valentine" is also a reference to a classic frank sinatra song about someone writing funny notes to a loved one outlining all their weird or annoying traits but talking about how they actually love those things about them

I think Kanye and Kim both probably still jab at Taylor. Fans may not always know the extent. Do you not recall that at the Grammys Feb 2025 ceremony, Kanye arrived with his wife (sans clothes) and was making a public scene about trying to "find" Taylor and had to be escorted from the event by security.

It’s so fascinating how the dominoes fell into place. TTPD was the end of her search for true love in all the albums that came before. It ends with The manuscript in which she gives the whole story - from Jake to Matty - to us because she found love and can move on now. She’s a mastermind.
