Speaking up for yourself is one of the scariest bravest things you can do and doing that at wedding where it’s like the only time anyone actually says “speak now” like here’s ur chance speak and she’s using that metaphor to convey her self written album!!I do think a speak now/speak now fathoming needs to be had!!

Just wanted to say re: customs that when Taylor came to latam she did customs at the airport and we have pictures from Argentina Mexico and I think a video from Brazil where she’s signing some autograph? I’m almost positive. I think it’s like a special custom office for private plane people, not like the regular people one, but they still have to go through it

see I disagree because I think the title track of speak now is where she got the concept from because of the phrase “speak now and forever hold your peace” is you speaking out about about something! in that song’s case and that phrase it’s at a wedding and then throughout the whole album, she speaking now about a lot of different things!

I’m beyond squeamish about buying any official merch because the fit and quality are so random. I only have merch from the show I’ve been to, Eras Tour, because I could touch it and try it on. Blake was cancelled in Aug 2024! The December thing was the lawsuit that came after her cancellation (she is suing Baldoni for retaliation against her because of the smear campaign in Aug. 2024). For Father Figure, my interpretation is that it's about the whole re-recording process and how she outsmarted him with that idea (with all the Swifties on her side). Not about the Masters purchase. Even with all of that said, I don't think we know when she actually finished writing because she said she did "most" of the album in Summer 2024.

I think the whimsey and storytelling of Speak Now as a song makes it difficult for people to conceptualize how the inherent idea of "speaking up" and interrupting a wedding is sort of just the quintessential pop culture example of the theme that the album is conveying. It's not just a collection of songs that serve as "unset letters" of things she wished she'd said; it's also an album which is, at its narrative core, operating on the exact same mentality that Ruin The Friendship is. "I don't think you should wait. I think you should speak now. My advice is to always ruin the friendship/answer the question, better that then regret it/ask it all your life." Much of what occurs in the Speak Now narrative happens because the narrator is making choices based on her hearts' desires and refusing to compromise based on what people around her expect or want her to do. She leaves a comfortable relationship in pursuit of something that, in her eyes, is more chaotic and passionate and fun. She pursues someone everyone thinks is bad news because she is so deeply sure of what she sees in them. She dares to forgive someone instead of caving in to bitterness and resentment, instead choosing to hold true to her sense of belief and good faith. And obviously a lot of this analysis is coming retroactively, as Ruin The Friendship didn't exist when Speak Now was written and released, but I think that that song really perfectly frames the cohesiveness of Speak Now as an album. (Not necessarily entirely related, but I do just love Speak Now (song) for how it it inherently rooted in the depiction of a wedding ceremony, which traditionally take place within churches, as depicted in the staging for the Speak Now tour. I love this because that church imagery comes back hard in Midnights and TTPD, which I personally view as sister albums to Speak Now (stained glass windows in my mind, I died on the altar waiting for the proof, Sarahs and Hannahs in their Sunday best, etc). The church then becomes a framing device for three integral concepts: marriage, religion, and death/funerals, which are all utilized to explore the theme of trauma and cyclical behavior as depicted within Speak Now, Midnights, and TTPD. Even though Speak Now (song) is not directly part of this interconnected thematic narrative, it lays an integral visual foundation that goes on to be thematically excavated in some of the most essential entries in her discography. Truly, to me, Speak Now is simply the album that keeps on giving, and the album that reveals more and more of its true significance as time goes on.)

9:47 no the only song in TLOAS that wasn't planned at all and that she brought the idea/concept at fullest to Max and Shellback was Elizabeth Taylor. You both will see when you react to the acoustic versions and voice memos. The other songs was a chorus, a verse or an especific lyric that she had on her phone that she would bring and they would start to write the song around that small fragment.

i agree with bonny on tortured poets being a very strong concept for the album as what it turned out to be; however i do think the title track only encompasses part of what the whole album was ( with just one line introducing the title and hence might be considered too arbitrary). i honestly feel the concept might work better without a title track on that album (meaning we could give that song another name?)

I do agree with the 23 minute mark comments about how Taylor is very intentional and does remember people and always does her best to make others feel seen. I also think after such a long and storied career, that she probably has support from Tree and other members of her team to help her review before certain interview situations when she last worked with people so that way she doesn’t ever misspeak or misremember someone on accident.

No girls you need to fathom the original prologue of Speak Now if you haven’t in a while. She LITERALLY talks about how the wedding moment when people say ”speak now or forever hold your peace” connects to the theme of the album. The song Speak Now and the context she uses that phrase in the song ties PERFECTLY into the theme and concept of the album. I mean your kinda saying it, it’s that moment ”speak now or forever hold your peace” but in real life for her. And in the song she chooses to speak up, like she’s doing with the album in real life!!!!! It’s so meta and the song is so metaphorical for what the album LITERALLY IS!! IF YOURE PLANNING ON REFATHOMING THE SPEAK NOW OG PROLOGUE SOON DONT READ BELOW CAUSE ITS MILD SPOILERS WITH MY THOUGHTS ON THE PROLOGUE AND HOW IT ALL TIES TOGETHER SO THEN RATHER HAVE YOUR OWN FATHOMINGS AND WE CAN DISCUSS UNDER THAT VIDEO BUT HERES MY THOUGHTS: she talks about each song being kind of a letter of the things she didn’t say earlier in the moment it happened but how she felt it’s now or never. Either she speaks about this now or forever hold her peace, like the moment in a wedding when someone would say ”speak now or forever hold your peace” and in that song she chooses to speak and that is what the concept of the whole album IS!! Her choosing to speak now and not forever holding her peace keeping quiet forever. She really talks about how she’s been thinking about that moment in weddings and how it’s metaphorically ties in to the album and how she kind of had that moment in life where she have felt like speak now or forever hold your peace and how she have stayed quiet earlier but this is her speaking. Idk this is just from memory now but I really think you should have a reread from the OG Speak Now prologue if you don’t think the song matches the concept. She talks about it a lot in the prologue, it definitely connects the moment in a wedding where they say ”speak now or forever hold your peace” with the theme of the album. No I’m feeling sooo passionately about this😂 and it’s a really good prologue would LOOOVEEE a refathoming of it from you guys and all the things you would come up with and connect!!☺️☺️🫶❤️ love u chickens🫶

I get where Emily is coming from with the title track „Life of a showgirl“ and the album name, because I feel like the song deals with the showgirl aspect of it all, but she explicitly said that the album is her life behind the scenes of the show. I also get that in the song she touches on the topic of fame as a concept and an entire life as a famous person, but the album is so much more centered around her personal feelings during the Eras Tour.

I think speak now as a concept doesn’t match the song, I agree, but it kind of works for the album. That was her speaking now and writing every song and proving everyone wrong. She spoke now and stopped that narrative that she can’t write her songs. And just the courage she has! Life of a show girl I’m with Emily a little bit! I love the title song but as an album title I almost think it could have been better titled “honey” or something like that? I understand coming after the eras tour like this was the moment to have this title and talk about the life of a showgirl. But I would say all the songs has a totally different energy and conversation that the lie of a show girl. Like idk I had to pick one song that makes the least sense on this specific album I feel like it is life of a show girl? I feel insane sayin that because I love this album SO MUCH. But I think it took so many people out of this album when none of the songs were life of a show girl related besides that one. I know she told us this is about her life behind the curtain and her life while not on stage. But I think people still thought it would be related. Like more about fatigue or doing it with a broken heart in a newly explored version? And like even traveling and the places she was? Idk I’m not making sense but I wish maybe we had 1 or 2 more songs that felt more similar to the life of the show girl track!! Still love the album so much. My personal favorite concept album she has done is midnights (maybe outside of red because obviously).

I have been wondering if any of the songs on Tortured Poets were possibly meant for Showgirl? As for Speak Now the song in comparison to the concept of the album as a whole personally I think it takes courage and bravery to make a statement standing up for yourself and what you believe as well as it does when fighting for love and risking everything. I bet she started writing before the European leg but kind of can't say that, because of the way that (seemingly contractually or whatever deal they made) album lists the writing.

I think with Speak Now I remember I’d been watching interviews and things before that album came out (OG round) and she’d talked about the concept of speaking now in different forms (a bit like how she did with Midnights) so I understood the concept before I heard the album and so it immediately clicked for me on first listen. I think that helped me rather than fathoming it retrospectively. Which is probably why it’s still in my top 5 fave albums of hers. Perhaps if she’d made the concept of the title track a bit more like It’s Time To Go - with various different concepts of ‘speaking now’ including at a wedding but other instances and then also some personal moments for her that would’ve helped people get it? 💜💜💜

In terms of "title tracks" let's remember that her label wanted it to be titled 'Speak Now' but Taylor wanted it to be called 'Enchanted' and the label won that battle. I feel the tracklist is perfect on this album. I love Honey at the end, actually, its just a nice little sweet song right before we get into the closer. Love! Its sooo hard to pick which concept album is the best. Sometimes I think Evermore is the best, because its incredible that she wrapped all of those songs up with one feeling. They are all sooo different, in story and also sonically. The concept is what ties it all together though. Of course Folklore is amazing, but I feel that concept is pretty easy to get to. Evermore is just next level for me. Of course, then there's TTPD....that album just gets better with every listen. I do think with time, its going to be like Evermore, and soon it will be a lot of peoples' favorites.

Speak Now the song (although I like it sonically) is just such an immature vision.. i think this why it feels out of place on the album. Obviously Taylor was a baby at the time and can be forgiven for this but also--of COURSE there is nothing romantic about ruining someone's wedding so you can "speak your truth" which if it is actually true and true for the other partner, would be something you should have said way before it got to a wedding. And belittling the bride with her gown like a pastry etc is really disappointing. Listening to this song as an adult is not that fun lol

Unrelated to the title track discussion, but reacting to the part about Elizabeth Taylor…I’m currently halfway through Elizabeth Taylor: The Grit & Glamour of an Icon and seriously fathoming SO many parallels between them. It’s great for a swiftie book club!there’s a few parts that jump out as similar themes between her diary and some of the writing on TLOAS. For example, in one of Elizabeth’s diary entries she writes “when you are young and you fall off your cloud for the first time, you try to make yourself believe everything is still beautiful.” It reminded me immediately of the imagery in Eldest Daughter of falling off a trampoline, learning cautious discretion, but still managing to view life and life as something mostly beautiful and desireable and eventually finding that truth. So many of her entries remind me of Taylor’s outlook on life and love. But beyond that, as Taylor said, she’s just an incredible human. I always knew her for her iconic glamour, but never her true story until reading this!! I love that Taylor is excited that we’d be curious and interested in Elizabeth’s life almost as a window to understanding her more deeply. So fun reading this alongside this era!!!

I feel similar to Emily about the concept of Showgirl and the song, but in reverse. I think the song very much encapsulates the theme Taylor spoke about and wants to convey; I just don’t think most of the other songs fit the narrative.
