I LOVE wish list and I think it is deep. I think if you see parts of it as shade that almost reveals something more about you? Like what about them wanting that is bad? I am JUST not fathoming 'wi$h li$t' especially acoustic. I loved Bonny's giggle at 'fat a$$' b/c it was just so out of place with the vibe of the acoustic version. I loved the discussion on it though! I hadn't fathomed the contrasts in each line! I still don't get 'good surf, no hypocrites' though. I can only think of... surf culture proclaiming to be about connection with the ocean and the 'we are one' kind of thing, but kind of savage when it comes down to it?!? Generally, I think that all of the verses in Wish List are about the things money and success can buy- - great roles awards (let’s be serious - it’s true) - yachts & choppers - plastic surgery (or a hot gf) - the off grid life/free time - expensive clothes and shades So many people want these things, but they are out of reach because of money, etc. And she is saying, she could have all that, but the things she thought were out of reach for her were: - privacy - a fulfilling life with a partner - a family Wow.

Loved the Wish List fathoming!!! I think she’s also saying that a true love like Travis is the one thing she couldn’t get for herself. She sings a lot about superstitions and wishes around love on this album, but she’s always achieved her business and musical career goals (and there are a lot of power move songs about that too!). So while she prob wants and has some of the things in the verses, she doesn’t need to wish for them. She only needs to wish for love. It was the only thing missing and now she has it. It kinda combines the glamour with the pure love on the album and says that no matter what I want or what I have materially, this love is more valuable.

I think it is a very important insight that a catchy beat makes people think the song is simple. It pushes their "silly teenage girl" misogynist buttons, and also apparently turns off their brains. I'll throw my two cents in regarding the "good surf, no hypocrites" line. I'm pretty sure each three-line verse is all connected. So the surf/hypocrite lyric is thematically connected to living off the grid. I'm taking it as describing people who just want to live a purer, more authentic life. Live off the land, be one with nature - like a hippie lifestyle but just described in a unique way. I also like the idea of how the word 'hypocrite' starts with the same sound as 'hippie.'

OMG, The Life of a Showgirl is amazing! That is a pedal steel guitar in the background, by the way, giving the country twang. She used pedal steel on Debut quite a lot, and a few times since. Wish List is my beloved..these are my thoughts to add to yours lol. "good surf no hypocrites" to me is kind of a double meaning with good surf-like smooth sailing, no rough seas, they want it ALL. They want to have the success but NO resistance, turbulence, no waves, etc. Which, is just unrealistic. Surf-like internet, surf the web--no hypocrites. Again, you want everyone to like you, you want fame and success but you also want to enjoy the internet, not have people talking about you all the time or making things up or being the biggest hypocrites ever (i.e all social media lol). I think because a lot of the time she uses the same vocals, and in these, it was more like a suprise song where she switches things up. I know that famously Meryl Streep left one of her Oscars in the bathroom and she's the most awarded actress ever so Taylor so could be relating to her or hoping one day that she will be respected like that in the movie industry. I also know Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster are both multiple winners and keeps Oscars in their bathrooms and Kate does it so people can hold it and practise speeches and pretend without feeling embarrassed. Meryl Streep also won an honorary Palme d' Or in 2024 so it would've been when she was writing this. She was also in Big Little Lies with Nicole and Zoe so there's a good chance Taylor has met her and it would be CRAZY if Meryl was a part of Taylor's first movie because who then could just say it's a crap movie or judge it when one of the greats is in it?! I don't know! I think Bonnie might be right when she's saying a lot of the wishes are probably actually on Taylor's list. I love OG Elizabeth Taylor but it's soooo nice having a Taylor song where the piano goes absolutely crazy just fully insane. It does a fantastic job at conveying that old hollywood vibe although I don't see the Lana comparison but that's probably because I don't like her or her music. girlssss i said this in the chat but the overall message of ruin the friendship where she says “my advice is always answer the question better that than to ask it all your life” sort of makes me think of how she was in this long committed six year relationship with Joe but the whole time she was wondering and asking the question (“can i ask you a question?”) about what if her and Matty Healy gave it a real shot. And now even though they did give it a shot, they answered the question, and it went horribly wrong, her advice is still to us to answer the question. And now that she’s with Travis, she doesn’t have to wonder about what if her and Matty were secretly meant to be because she answered the question.

I’ve been taking the first verse of Wish List as kinda shading Matty and Joe respectively — I was immediately reminded of Matty’s girlfriend Gabriette with the “fat ass with the baby face” line (no shade on my end, she’s gorgeous!) and the Oscars/Palme d’Or/complex female character is soooo giving Joe to me. Like more concerned with Taylor being deep and lyrical, working with her on folklore and evermore, and always being in critically acclaimed films (but never getting the accolades for himself). On Wish List: I view each verse of the song like it's a block of what one might think a stereotypical person for that life would want: The first three is about someone who wants the rich life: the high dollar fashions and transportation, the butt lifts and the Botox Next is the career actor: they want the accolades and the intense highly challenging roles, the awards from all the different channels that one can get it, domestic (the Oscar) and international (Palme d'or) And then you have the naturalist, the "hippy" if you will: off the grid, hiking and surfing with their pets that they spoil like children, surrounded by honest and real people ("no hypocrites") Next you have the sports star living the glamourous life: a contract with high profile, high paying sports club, a party life that is hardcore party, and then the ability to get the evidence taken off the internet and out of public scrutiny. And then of course, Taylor tells us about what she wants.

Hello i have just in this very sacred moment, fathomed wish list welcome to my ted talk. my thesis statement is that this song doesn’t exist without peace from folklore. ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN When I first heard Wish List, I thought it was written in the very EARLY stages of meeting and falling for Travis. The “I just want you, have a couple kids” part feels like an exhale - like holy fuck, I see you, and everything I thought I wanted seems irrelevant now because this is what I’ve actually been waiting for all along. But after settling into it, she FATHOMED that she could have both - the love and the Cartier, the security and the ambition. I DONT NEED TO GIVE YOU AFFIRMATIONS THAT I WILL GIVE YOU A CHILD WHILST STILL THINKING ABOUT YOU BEING FUCKING MISERABLE BECAUSE MY SUCCESS CANNOT BRING YOU PEACE BITCH. The core of their relationship is security and pure love. And that being the core of their relationship ALLOWS for her to safely and confidently ALSO want other more material things in the verses but she needed to be certain that the core of their relationship wasn’t alllll the shit peace was about. But the way she’s talking about the things in the verses that the other people want it’s a double edged sword and it feels empty and it feels hypocritical because that don’t have that safe pure love to fall back on. She talks so much about how he supports her and we see it. So the exhale of FINDING him and longing for that quiet, suburban love is Wish List a feeling born from those early stages. (She also might’ve gone into that protective mode that she initially went in and stayed in with Joe of just wanting everyone to know nothing about their relationship!!!!!!!) But once she settled into that love and realised she could have both the “I just want you” and the certainty that he’s not going anywhere, that he’ll be her best friend, give her the kids, be super hot, and he WANTS her to keep achieving everything her heart desires and being so outwardly proud of her and in love- there’s another EXHALE. IN CONCLUSION Travis has great dick but also makes her feel so safe and loved to the point that she allows herself to want all of the materialistic and career-driven things and she will retreat to the lakes (being her relationship with Travis and how the early stages felt - the song wish list) to REFUEL so that she can go back out into the world and keep being TAYLOR FUCKING SWIFT

Re: surf/hypocrite line- It really has to be in context with the previous lines about living off grid /3 dogs they call their kids. It’s someone pursuing a lifestyle that is not traditional perhaps like a van life where they just want to surf. I think lots of people in theory are into the idea of that lifestyle but then are critical of those actually living it: hence they’re hypocritical

What a great wish list fathoming!! Adding some more - I think the verses are things that are unattainable to people, and ultimately, the chorus is something that is unattainable to Taylor. To have people actually leave her the fuck alone, to actually be with just Travis without the media attentions, it’s not something she thinks can fully happen. She described it as her “happy place” like an ideal that is probably not completely going to be reality. She can’t have it all because she wants to be a pop star so she can’t also just live a normal suburban life she’s describing. I think it is a little shady because regular people don’t realize that they have something that Taylor wants but can’t fully have.

Omg this song being the antithesis of Peace makes so much sense! It’s not I’ll give you a child but will it be enough if I never give you peace. Taylor talked about this chorus being her mental happy place like in Happy Gilmore. Like she goes to that place when life feels chaotic. So they both want all the success and chaos in the verses but find peace in their connection and the idea of having their own family. Peace is no longer a bargaining chip or unattainable issue/burden, but rather a happy and soft place to mutually bask in. With the verses it feels like she is almost mocking the song Peace because she sees now how ridiculous it is to choose.

I think the hypocrisy in, "they want that yacht life under chopper blades" could lie in most celebs have had an experience on a yacht but as a result of them getting to the yacht is the fame, and with fame comes peoples curiosity/stalking/paps. how many times have you seen celebs on boats. so the chopperblade is a helicopter from TMZ or whatever gossip newsletter there is. it made me think of Matt LeBlanc telling the story of how he found out his roof was in ruins because helicopters/reporters were flying over the whole friends-cast's house reporting it in the actual news - while he was sitting in his watching the news. but it could also be them having alot of money hah.

1) I'm so deeply sad that these aren't on streaming. I simply did not have the funds to buy all the different versions of the album. 2) Your Wish List convo made me fathom a bit: I think there are times when one thing we really want feels like an all consuming desire... like it's the only thing we want. Sometimes it's love; sometimes it's a goal/achievement. I think Taylor might be letting us in on that all consuming feeling in the chorus while the verses have a more birds eye view perspective recognizing that you never just want one thing in your life; you're a whole, multi-faceted person. The "they" of the verses places some distance between Taylor and what she's singing about, but I think it might be "they" because she's so hyperfocused in the song that the verses don't feel like they matter to her even though they do. I haven't combed through every lyric and don't know if they all fit for Taylor, but it makes me relate to the song more. Still confused by the $ of it all. If anyone has insight, do tell.

I agree with everything said about Wish List! It’s always thrown me because Taylor wants everything mentioned in that song, in some way. My wish for Wish List is - I have accomplished everything on my wish list and I am at the pinnacle of my industry and the only thing left on my wish list is a family. I do kind of read it as you're scrolling online And each little phrase she says is the equivalent to seeing a post. I feel like one of the most overwhelming parts of social media is how many DIFFERENT opinions you can see back to back and how it really makes you question your own perception of things and that to me is reflected in how the things listed are contradictory or even hypocritical.

I always think of Taylor’s description of Wishlist as a kind of mini-fantasy in her head. Her “happy place” she can go to in her mind, just like in Happy Gilmore. And it’s very sincere — she explained that it’s usually not “cool” to say you want love. This is juxtaposed to the verses, which are other people’s fantasies but through the lens of how they proclaim these wishes on social media. It feels insincere because it’s almost like a caricature. It’s a cool “lifestyle” similar to the apathy we see described in Eldest Daughter. And yes, there is inherent tension in each of those caricatures — like wanting an Oscar but being so unbothered by it that you just keep it on your bathroom floor. I think she’s saying, why can’t we just say what we want and be sincere and excited about it?

To me Wishlist has always had a touch of Sweet Nothing. I work in film myself and it’s such a relentless industry - nothing is ever enough, you’re always supposed to achieve more, more, more. wanna hear something nuts? i ordered both the dressing room rehearsal edition (with life of a showgirl and wish list) and so glamorous edition (with the different elizabeth taylors) but instead of dressing room rehearsal, i got alone in my tower (with fate of ophelia and eldest daughter), except it was still all the same artwork as so glamorous, same print on the cd, same case. i couldn't exchange it because it was limited run. i ended up having to acquire the ones i wanted another way (hey, i paid for them, it's not my fault they didn't give me what i paid for! lol)

About the hypocrisy theme in Wi$h Li$t, I think the contrast is actually between COMPLEX and FEMALE CHARACTER. I wouldn't say the complex female characters are not awarded nowadays, but it's still a fairly new thing to have complex female characters in cinema. Historically, most female characters were pretty one dimensional, and it was only the male characters that had depth. Then, in the same verse, the contrast is between the Palme D'Or and the Oscars. Two very different type of awards. The Oscars are more mainstream, while Cannes focuses more on independent cinema. Oftentimes it's two very different movies that win at Cannes and at the Oscars, because it's hard to make a movie that caters to both.

I do think the key change hints at how getting what you wish for may not meet your needs… yacht life under chopper blades = media stalking for example, Oscar on the bathroom floor maybe fame but a lifestyle issue too. My theory is that the song Elizabeth Taylor is being sung TO a lover, asking them and telling them things, but all the times that the words "Elizabeth Taylor" are said are flashes in the main characters' mind (like warning signs). The protagonist (Swift) is talking to their lover and almost haunted by the woman who they see so many similarities with their life already, like a cautionary tale. So, the story progresses from asking 'is this real, will it last' (thinking: 'can it really be possible for me in these circumstances; my role model went through so many relationships she thought was real; I wonder if she felt this way at the start'), to warning the lover ('i'll be devasted if you leave; and you'll forever be associated with me anyway), and ending by telling them not to dare being anything other than 'mine'. The protagonist goes from cautious wondering to claiming their ownership of the lover. It feels like she's heard the lesson from her role model and decided to go down this path with the lover anyway. Placing it after TFOO and before Opalite in the track list also fits this narrative arc. Track 1: this person came along, revived me from the dead and saved me from melancholy. Track 2: is this real; remember the cautionary tale from my role model. Track 3: deciding to choose joy and make your own happiness.

Good surf & no hypocrites refers to the couple that want that freedom living off the grid (with their 3 dogs that they call their kids.) She’s saying they want to live somewhere by the beach with down to earth people. That whole section is painting the picture of a couple you can picture living on a coastal farm. It’s a lovely visual!

I think that's the wrong way to look at it. She's coming at this whole thing with a LOT of hindsight. Literally a few lines later, she refers to that girlfriend as his ex. She knows now that she wouldn't have been breaking up soulmates by letting him know how she felt about him. Which probably dominos into other possibilities, including a version of reality where maybe he's still alive today. The message is to just go for it if you feel strongly enough about something. If you can stomach songs like You Belong With Me, this is the same idea. This song is basically saying that "I should have told you that 'you belong with me' when I had the chance." I will say that I personally don't see myself following the message of the song, as I am basically allergic to drama of any kind. 😂 But I appreciate the idea of looking back at high school and realizing things that seemed world-ending then actually weren't. Things work themselves out, for better or worse, but at least you learn something about yourself in the process.

The key change in the music could also signify that she's switching to someone else's wish list there. But yeah, ultimately, these are all things that she could herself wanting or see Travis wanting, but they've decided their priorities are now each other.

After that, she wanted to escape and live a quieter life in England (substitute The Lakes for living off the grid). This would Rep through Folkevermore. Then a brief look into what was once on Travis's wish list (substitute NFL for Real Madrid). The chorus and bridge are just describing what her (and presumably his) priority is now, after they've explored their previous 'wishes'.

Loved your fathoming on Wish List. It highlighted a question I often have about Taylor’s lyrics: whether they’re inherently deep or whether we interpret them in a deeper way than she might have intended. But I’ve been watching videos by The Swiftie and the Scholar and am blown away by how much more poetic Taylor’s lyrics are in the literal sense than how I would imagine. Uncle Jerry knows his literature and I’m learning all over again about iambic pentameter etc. He also knows Shakespeare through and through. I think anyone here who likes to go deep on lyrics would get value from their analyses.

Yes, just me 🤔. Sarah, I do appreciate the message in this song, that generally, it's best just to go for what you want, especially if losing the friendship etc are your only fears. We fear judgement so much when we're young, it can suppress who we are. But I think, don't kiss him. I'm allergic to drama too, and I don't want to be with the kind of man who'd kiss back when he's with someone. Just tell him how you feel, give him time to decide, time to break up with her if that's the way it's going and otherwise respect his decision. So many look different in hindsight. I was once in a situation where I wondered if I'd said yes (to a flat share), a friend would still be alive. But another friend told me that could be true, but it could also have been true that he'd have pulled me into despair with him, or I'd have been the one who found him. We never can be really sure.

I actually think it IS about waves... surfers are generally thought to be very intentional, intuitive people, in touch with nature etc but in ALSO good surfers get really territorial about waves and get pissed and can be real assholes to folks who are just learning to surf who "steal" their waves. So that line is about the absolute hypocrisy of acting like you are some kind of actual yogi or enlightened being and then at the same time being rude and insensitive and selfish to a younger person

Creating a playlist is exactly what I did! I use Apple Music so I loaded all the CDs onto iTunes like a blast from the past, and synced iTunes with my cloud music library so I could create a playlist on my phone that has the full album, then all of the acoustic songs. And I have the acoustic songs in order!

Oh and “Fat ass with a baby face” reminds me of the phrase “men want women born sexy yesterday.” It also makes me think of how that’s a really big thing in the sex work industry, like nobody really talks about how creepy it is that women feel pressured to look as young as possible, but also mature and sexy at the same time with the largest breasts and asses possible. And women compete on that level because they want the male gaze validation for whatever reason. Fuck the patriarchy lol.

I think we have to remember that when Taylor is explicitly "shading" someone or pointing out hypocrisy or pointing out the wrong doings of someone who has severely wronged her, it's very obvious. Taylor has rarely if ever casually shaded just random groups of people who had no business being shaded. If she was trying to be shady in Wish List, it would've been very apparent from the beginning and she would've been obvious about it, she doesn't hide that kind of thing.  The whole point of the song is that people want luxurious things, however big or small, without having to pay the price of that luxury. They want to go on the internet without dealing with hypocritical people, they want to be out on their yachts without paparazzi coming after them, they want freedom while living off the grid which is nearly impossible. They want to have their cake and eat it too. She's aware of that, her happy place though is still imagining living that life of contentment and settling down without people bothering her and still maintaining a huge life of luxury and being a major Pop star. She's comparing her own situation to that of what other people want knowing that it's likely impossible. But she still hopes that they attain it and she hopes she can attain that herself. Boss up, settle down. You can't do both at once.

YES !! wishlist is supposed to be like how people want it all, like everything two contradicting things. I think it's pretty damn clever, like everyone has these complex wishes and all she wants is very simple! It's why the song is one of my favs : ) I think god surf no hypocrites is how they want to just surf thru life and stay winning, but they don't want any push back. And then the complex female character I think, is more a dig at her critics than anything, like people want complex women, but they really don't, and you see that in her own work, like the backlash she gets for the different facets of herself. I can say, now, with confidence this is the first album of Taylor’s that you could play the first second of each song and I could sing the rest of the song 100% accuracy. That was illegal to put the intro to RTF in your outro I have now sung the song in its entirety.

In my opinion, Elizabeth Taylor should have been titled Dear Taylor, Only because to me it does feel like she's asking Elizabeth Taylor if she thinks this relationship is forever. Something that I took away is wishlist sounds a lot like glitch and the reason that is is because there’s been a glitch and for the first time she actually wants to settle down and get married and have kids with someone and not just be a popstar, she wants both. The hypocrisy, and that is that she will never have both the same way. Everyone else won’t have both the things they want.

As I was watching this I was intrigued around the discussion with the good surf no hypocrite lyrics. I never thought about it because I just assumed she was referring to a hypocritical culture of surfers while I didnt quite get it to the extent that’s what it made me think of . After watching this, I decided to look it up and turns out it’s is a common theme around that. That there are these beliefs in freedom and connection to nature yet many foster behaviors that are contrary to those values. Go on a google journey of hypocrisy in surfing and I think the line will make a lot more sense as you start comparing the lyrics in your wish list breakdown :)

I’m having wishlist fathoming because of this video!!!! She is saying she just wants Travis, but what she’s saying is she wants a ring! When she says I hope I get what I want, well what she really wants is to get engaged with a ring! She even notes her own hypocrisy when she says, “boss up, settle down” she does want the career, but she was really talking about getting engaged. I think that’s what she’s saying.

Just adding my two cents into the whole Wi$h Li$t lyric discussion, girlies! The whole song is basically a commentary on how everyone yearns for their own wants and desires out of life that they think will make them feel successful. I personally feel like the whole first verse is highlighting the things celebrities yearn for or think that they need in order to appear successful. A lot of celebrities act really unbothered about their awards on e they've won them because they're always chasing the next one. It's also documented that some celebrities actually do keep their Oscar trophies in the bathroom (for example, Kate Winslet keeps one of hers in her downstairs bathroom so that her houseguests can pretend to give an Oscar speech in the mirror). The second verse is more down-to-earth and is highlighting the simpler things that some people wish for, like a fun Spring Break getaway ("that Spring Break that was fuckin' lit"), trips to the beach ("good surf") or being surrounded by positive people ("no hypocrites"). But, at the end of the day, all she wants is Travis. Doesn't matter where, doesn't matter who else is there and it doesn't matter what awards she does or doesn't win. She's happy wherever he is. I fear too many people sleep on the lyrics of this song because they aren't getting that one overarching theme - Taylor's basically saying that everyone wants something, whether it's a humble dream or delusions of grandeur. Her dream just happens to be a future with Travis.

Being a socialist and having that perspective on Whish List i think its quite clear that Taylor is throwing shade towards the materialistic. I dont think shes a person that values materialistic things, she uses it in her work but its not important in her personal life, she has time and again talked about wanting ordinary life experiences that are impossible for her because of her work. The second verse is more about the things that matter for real. I like your analysis of the song. On the other note. The acoustics are fantastic. Her best performances are when it's just she and her guitar.

And now I think these are all ironic things--wanting an oscar but then keeping it on the floor, wanting no hypocrites with your good surf when good surfers are known to be hypocrital about sharing the waves etc (this also works with internet surfing...does the internet exist without hypocrites?lol), wanting a crazy spring break but then make sure no one hears about it etc. And I think the lines Taylor writes about herself are also ironic--"tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do": obviously neither Taylor nor Travis actually want the world to leave them alone-- the world gives them their success. And the "wow" she adds there emphasizes this juxtoposition.

I agree with Bonnie, the sound of The Fate of Ophelia reminds me of Willow. I think that it’s the instruments used. In the acoustic version it sounds like there’s a mandolin and/or lute. That makes sense to me since those would be instruments used during Shakespeare’s time period. I really love the acoustic versions because it reminds me of the secret songs and Long Pond.

Wish List is the evolution of The Prophecy. “Don’t want money, just someone who wants my company”. Also I think it’s important to remember that both of them have been with partners who they felt were using them to get ahead. She’s saying there’s no ulterior motives…she just wants him for him; and she knows the reciprocal is true as well.

I also think that wish list is the product of Taylor hanging out and listening to conversations going on around her while she’s at Travis‘s games specifically. Those are two worlds colliding, similar to what she references on TTPD with (and my friends all smell like weed or little babies). Just in that Super Bowl box of 2024 alone, she probably heard those specific dreams of people sitting around her and what they want for themselves, and maybe she’s just sitting in the middle of it thinking at this moment, all I want is as normal of a life as I can have with the person that I love.
