We want to address some of your comments on our most recent video, specifically regarding our conversation around the lyrical “depth” of TLOAS.
To make it clear… We do not think, and did not say, that this album is NOT deep or meaningful.
We do, however, think that in some ways it can be perceived as ‘less’ deep/complex than other recent albums Taylor has given us, and we wanted to open up a conversation about this and hear your thoughts as we hadn’t (and still haven’t) fully subscribed to this idea. We stressed multiple times throughout the video that even if it is less ‘deep’ that this is not a criticism or a problem, and that it is clear that Taylor had other focuses for this project - infectious melodies, amazing bops, and an overall happy & joyous vibe - and that she achieved exactly what she set out to do.
We reject the idea that we only want or value “the tea” or parasocial details from Taylor. We reject the idea being projected onto us that lack of sadness = lack of depth. We both strongly believe that happy love songs can be just as vulnerable, if not more vulnerable, than sad songs, especially whilst being in a relationship. There are other valid reasons that we feel some of these songs keep the listener at arms length which we will discuss in our song breakdowns.
Some of the comments on our last video have left us feeling misunderstood, and like there is intent to misconstrue our meaning. It also feels like, even within our own community, there isn’t an ability for us to have nuanced discussions around this artist and this music we all love so much. We are almost never negative, and absolutely never hateful, when it comes to Taylor and her music, and to feel lumped into that category is honestly… in its truest definition… offensive.
We thought it went without saying, given our overwhelming positivity and defence of this album in the 15+ videos we’ve uploaded over the last month, that we love it deeply and have since our first listen. This fact should be entirely obvious at this point.
We ALWAYS appreciate and encourage your commentary and any constructive criticism you have for us. But we also hope that by now you know us well enough to give us the benefit of the doubt when you think there is any kind of rude, hateful, or perhaps even misogynistic intent on our part towards Taylor. We encourage your opinions, even if they disagree with ours, but only when delivered in a kind and respectful manner. For those of you that commented with insightful and respectful thoughts, thank you! They were amazing and definitely make strong points for how deep this album really is and so much of that we strongly agree with.
Please know sometimes we have days where we feel less positive than others for a multitude of reasons. We adore this album, LOVE seeing Taylor happy and positive and so deeply love having happy songs to bop around to 💃🏼
Tomorrow we are uploading our Fate of Ophelia breakdown on YouTube where we continue this conversation, and hopefully you guys will understand our thoughts more 🫶🏼 thank you for taking the time to read!
