Loveeeeee that you saw Pitbull Em 🤣🤣 amazinggg

anna

I love that you guys are highlighting the lyrics on this album! People have been hating on them so much and it’s so nice to see the lyrical aspect of this album getting its due respect! She’s so witty and clever on showgirl!

Marshall

ā€œDid you girlboss too close to the sunā€ the outrage over how it’s cringe is so hilarious to me when people don’t get the joke the sarcasm and the REFERENCE!! Another one I also absolutely deeply love ā€œI salute you if you’re much to much to handleā€ it’s perfect and so fitting and I just can’t wait for it when I listen to this song,I honestly love CANCELLED! I’ve been obsessed since the second I heard it and I’m not even a rep stan!!

Hunter

Ayy they’re back! Another ray of sunshine in my day šŸ™Œ

Natalia

I think this discussion about the depth of the album is interesting, and what Em says is on the nose. There is a very purposeful distance on Taylor’s part which results in the album being pretty surface-level, which is to its detriment. She’s done distance before in a very good way, so I am unsure why she failed to do it here. Maybe because she’s tired? Or maybe because she cares so much about protecting her relationship with Travis that it hindered the lyricism? Thanks for the video, chickens.

ton

Helloooooo welcome back!

Karen Valentino

I hear what you’re saying about these songs keeping us at arm’s length, but her music is deeper than apparent at first. And her lyrics are still quite poetic in the literal sense (use of devices such as metaphor, smile, meter, etc.) .

šƒš„šŒšˆšŸ’–

I actually spat my drink out laughing when that pic of em with her dad and sister came up I was not expecting that😭 Ems whole family is such icons omg no wonder she’s the funniest human alive

Marshall

I don’t really feel like I’ve comprehended everything in it fully yet, I definitely already have and still am fathoming more and quicker, BUT I constantly hear, see or notice new things, interesting connections and references or quirky details. What’s the most recent bit you found out that wreck your brain?

Danielle

Emily’s shirt reminded me that I wanted to ask some other swifties… anyone else super disappointed with the merch quality this time? I got that same mint shirt and it was so incredibly thin. I also got the black hoodie in my normal size (have multiple other hoodies from her sitting the same size, but it fit like it was 2 sizes smaller. Ended up getting a refund for both items and never had to do that before with her merch.

Renee S Smith

did albums pre-Folklore really break people's brains?

Katie LaFave

i don’t cuz i feel like we don’t really know that much about joe through the happy songs! like we know he was there for during the hard times of being ā€œcancelledā€, but i feel like that’s really it! I feel like what we know more of in terms of her and Joe are there struggles because even happy albums like reputation and lover show the struggles that they were having in their relationships where with Travis there’s none of that! this album is just truly happy and i love that! for me, I don’t need there to be a lot of depth to love an album

Terah Moxley

Thinking about Emilyā€˜s favorite lyric from the Fate of Ophelia, that lyric has always made me think about all of the girls you’ve loved before and how those two sentiments about those two different men in her life are very different

Rebecca

Do this for every album please!

ton

I think it’s got depths people don’t see also. Like the 5 lines in FOO resembling Shakespeares iambic pentameter The links to other songs on the album The links to other albums etc I think it’s just that people think depth is sadness rather than how clever this album actually is

Marƭa JuƔrez

I have a question, as a new swiftie, I have listened in retrospective to her whole discography, and it seems to me that we get to know her li mostly after everything is over, I mean there are songs before and during relationships, but they read to me more of what se wants to happen or the fears that manifest in the moments she sees it will eventually end, and I guess the question is, does this feel less introspective because it is a happy record, or is it more surface level because she is being respectful with their relationship? Kind like when Travis doesn’t joke around as much as his brother does

Amanda Christon

So happy you uploaded, I needed this today šŸ’•

Rianne van Ladesteijn

I would like to challenge the notion that just because it’s more ā€˜easy’ language or metaphor wise it’s not ā€˜not deep’ - in my opinion it’s almost more vulnerable to be really straightforward in what she’s saying. Also I wonder whether this album is ā€˜easier’ to fathom because we’ve been more aware of her life, she’s not hiding from us anymore and she was on a major tour. Personally I also think the production really shines because the lyrics are not as complicated - not to say that both can’t be done but I kind of appreciate that choice as normally I’m a lyrics person but for this album I’ve found myself really savouring in the production and picking up new things the more I’m listening, whereas I don’t remember having that experience with ttpd for example Anyway just some of my ponderings ā˜ŗļø P.s. As a lyrics girlie, I’m very excited to hear what lyrics you chickens are drawn to most

Kailey's Corner

Ahhhh missed you chickens so much!!! Hope you had such a lovely restful time off! So happy to see a new post, can't wait to watch it later ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Bloom

Missed you guys ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Noelia Di Giuseppe

Favorite lyric that comes to mind is from Opalite ' and don't we try to love Love' because YESSS

YaZz

I completely agree with you! When this album sat with me I realized it wasn’t my favourite for that reason. It misses on the intimacy factor . I still adore this album but it probs ranks in the middle for me . Not the top but not bottom.

Takara

Maybe it’s also that she’s being very direct on this album instead of having to hide her true feelings in layers of metaphor? See: her last 4 albums. I’d also argue that in the grand scheme of her life this relationship is still new, still likely there’s a lot of the honeymooon phase on Showgirl. As someone who has been married for a long time there’s a lot more complexity to a relationship the longer you’re in it. I personally am so unwell considering she’s going to write songs about married life one day 🄹

Katie LaFave

I feel like I should mention that for myself lyrics are not #1 to me! for me it’s production, sound and melodies, and then the lyrics! Of course I love lyrics and I do pause and read the lyrics of the songs when they come out, but that’s just not #1 on my list that would make me like a song! I swear Taylor could sing about a chair and I would love it because it would have superior production & melodies! with that lyrics don’t really hit me if they have an upbeat production! For example, I love fate of ophelia and it has amazing lyrics, but the lyrics don’t hit me when I’m listening to it, but with loml for example, that song is so slow that the lyrics do hit harder! that’s what’s great about the acoustic versions is they force you to really hear and pay attention to the lyrics

Marshall

I personally feel very connected to it because it feels soooo ā€˜Taylor’ like she said in that interview ā€œpeople say to me ā€˜you’ve never been so youā€™ā€¦ā€ and I feel it in the record, it’s just ā€˜her’ and that simplicity doesn’t necessarily make it distant for me, it has a certain meaning of its own. It may lack depth for some and it may be caused by the more professional environment in which it has been created (Max not Jack etc). I think she lowk is protecting their peace and we’re used to opposite - openness. She might’ve also wanted to do something totally different from TTPD which is why it’s less ā€˜dramatic’ and what I love about the change is how she focused more on everything around the lyrics - PRODUCTION, shoots, including the physical copies and their photos, mv, doc, movie, release party. And it makes the whole album even more of an event which fits the theme even more imo. But I totally get your sentiment and point of frustration

Jenny Fowler

The mixed reaction to TLOAS reminds me so much of how Rep was received. Father Figure is in my top 3 of all time. It’s just brilliant. I feel like she should be allowed to place whatever depth she feels at the time into her work. TTPD exhausted me, TBH. I love it, but it was a lot to process and it made me sad for her. I’m just so happy she is happy. And I rock the eff out to this album! Love y’all!!!

Yuli

The storm inside a teacup bit in opalite is probably my favourite bunch of lyrics from the album (even though opalite isn’t my favourite song!) i also see the thunder like a drum almost like how you explain the scary thunder storms to children when they’re scared - the minimising of it, making it seem not so big and scary it feels so lullaby coded

Cooler Fan

To start, we have fathomed this album quicker *because* Taylor has explained the songs so well already in the press tour...

Bria Bowen

The depth convo is an interesting discussion. I also think I fathomed the album pretty quickly. Obvi the depth is there. At the same time some albums go way way deeper. However, could it be, that we all perhaps are just better at fathoming now? We know the lore. We knew to look into things like hamlet and Elizabeth Taylor before the album came out to be prepared. Something like Father figure probably would’ve taken us, the fandom, longer to fathom if it were on a previous album. I also think something like Midnights- if it were just the 13 tracks we probably would’ve fathomed fairly quickly. Another layer, is that we typically are trying to figure out who the songs are about (esp ttpd and midnights) , and in this case, most tracks are simply Travis.

Natalia

Agreed! I am listening to it still but it doesn’t really feel as impactful for me as say TTPD or Red or Fearless.

Jordyn

I’m curious what you guys mean when you say depth? I feel like this is the same depth as any of her happier records. The difference is she’s not anxious or worried about this relationship. She’s secure so the lyrics reflect that (at least in my opinion).

Marshall

I really love these: 1. ā€˜I would have drowned in the melancholy’ as well as ā€˜I would have lingered in purgatory’ also Em! ā€˜Don’t care where the hell you been cuz now you’re mine’ (gives AOTGYLB vibes) it is a 10 too 2. ā€˜Under bright lights, they withered away, but you bloom’ edit! I just saw y’all also picked this twins!šŸ‘Æā€ā™€ļø ā€˜Hey what could you possibly get for the girl who has everything and nothing all at once, babe I would trade the Cartier for someone to trust, just kidding’ SHES SO FUNNY THE GAGGERY

Yuli

Every time i add my milk into my tea (after it brews for 3-5 minutes) and i see the milk mixing in with the tea i think it looks like a storm inside a teacup and it really grounds me and this lyric means so much to me it makes me feral x

Alysia Rene

TTPD reaction is my comfort blanket lol when I miss your content I always go back to TTPD. Happy to see a notification today!!

Cassy

girlies omg this is exactly what i needed, a surprise little video šŸ§”šŸ’š missed you

Cooler Fan

Also remember, she made this album after 6 months of her and Travis being in a relationship. The depth is there, but TS13 will defos show the growth. I feel like TLOAS is her thanking Travis for saving her

Cassy

i will never get over be my ny when hollywood hates me

Marshall

ā€˜Depth without darkness’ it takes you under but you don’t drown in it cause it just shows you around the bottom, the past dark times and then saves you from it/shows how much better it is now, and pulls you back to the surface etc (pun intended)

Sheila Ellis

Album recorded at the beginning of their relationship, honeymoon period and the concept of the album is the showgirl's life behind the scenes... I think the next one will be more informative.

Marshall

Not saying violet/darker purple for Elizabeth Taylor is diabolical, sorry I’m cheesy

Darya šŸ¤

Also thunder like a drum related back to hoax! And the storm inside a teacup relates back to the ā€œline she wishes she would’ve writtenā€ in You’re So Vain

Katie LaFave

we do have to remember that this album was written after her and Travis have been together for like almost a year and then a little bit past the year mark so I think with the next album they will have been together for a couple years, and probably married so there could be more depth associated with TS 13 in that way!

Marshall

For me Ophelia is lowk DARK emerald or brownish rusty brown with dark beige

sierra

i love this starting convo bc i feel the same. because i’ve already fathomed the album, i’m okay to step away from it when previous albums i would listen on repeat to absolutely nothing else for months & months & months. haven’t felt the same with showgirl which has really thrown me! also agree that the other albums having other people on them does seem to bring something else out which makes the album…. more imo!

Jenny

This is very interesting because I have a somewhat different take and think this is a very vulnerable album. She said herself this album was a self-portrait. To me it means this is not a vivisection of her psyche like Tortured Poet was. But it’s coming to terms with her truest self. Her at peace self. When you are happy in an healthy relationship, It is that simple. Truly. There isn’t a million thoughts going through your mind. You just ARE. And I think this is her BEING. Love your insight always šŸ’›

Cassy

i don’t think the songs are missing depth i just think they offer up less new information then what previous albums have revealed to us in recent years. we got lots of tayLORE i feel like and also so much of the past albums are mixed with fiction that it’s a bit harder to figure out certain songs whereas in most of tloas she’s telling us exactly how she’s feeling and it’s very straightforward in that sense but i don’t think that makes the album have less depth, just less of a puzzle to figure out. i wonder if people would say 1989 has no depth if it came out today lol

sierra

love your thoughts, i hadn’t thought about it in direct vs hiding in metaphor way & you are so right. absolutely agree that marriage is its own whooooole thing! will be interesting to see how that all plays out within her songwriting.

Jenny

You read my mind

KimMcMoe

I’m only seven minutes into the video, but I’m gonna leave this comment before I listen to your favorite lyrics, because this is really just responding to the beginning of your video. I appreciate your willingness to share how you’re feeling about this album because I’ve been feeling the same, and kind of felt alone. Any commentary was either hateful and negative or it was sunshine and lollipops. And I really felt somewhere in between. I think where I’ve landed is that this album is a doughnut. I love a doughnut. They taste delicious and are absolutely tempting to me to have for breakfast every morning. But the truth is is that if I have a doughnut for breakfast, I’m gonna feel hungry an hour later. It’s not going to satiate me even though I might enjoy it. Overall, I much prefer of veggie and egg scramble with a side of fruit. It’s also delicious, but it’s also feeding me and nourishing me. Even though I absolutely enjoy showgirl (the donut), it doesn’t feed me the way that her previous works too. Hopefully that makes sense. It’s not at all that I dislike showgirl… I guess I’m just the kind of person that preferred something else.

Marshall

Opalite: ā€œyou finally left the table and what a simple thought, you’re starving til you’re notā€ and ā€œBUT FAILURE brings you FREEEEEEDOM and I can bring you looooveā€ these r my favs FF: ā€˜said they wanna see you rise, they don’t want you to reign’ dark ciggary colour but the dark grayish smoke too, also ā€˜I saw a change in you..ā€ the entire bridge AND the outro is a mindfuck with a key change as a cherry on top and fhe dick lyric obviously both before and after the plot twist duh šŸ™„

Cristina HM

Not gonna lie; this is my least favorite album. Can't listen to it anymore. Going back to TTPD and Folklore over and over šŸ’–

Katie LaFave

I feel like with an album like this that’s so upbeat it takes like a full on breakdown and looking at each lyric to really see how deep these songs are which I think you guys and all of us will fathom when you do your song breakdowns

Jenny

So agree with you!

Jenny

My thoughts too, she has never explained an album so well

sierra

rep broke my brain šŸ˜‚

Cassy

no. it was folklore where she started to really mix fact with fiction where things started to become a bit trickier to figure out. idk why everyone feels they need a puzzle when it comes to taylor’s music. being straightforward can still be poetic.

Jenny Fowler

OH and the second part of the Eldest Daughter bridge about thinking she wouldn’t find the life that shimmered innocence is so raw and vulnerable!

Lucy

I HAVE SYNESTHEIA omg my community

Katie LaFave

I was so happy to see you guys talking about how superior tis the damn season on ur IG story! like yes thank you!!

ton

Fate of Ophelia… you dug me out of my grave. Throw back to Rep. Ophelia imagery. Link to Cancelled

Keri šŸ«¶šŸ»

Ophelia- teal Elizabeth taylor- royal purple Opalite- whiteish orange Father figure- Forrest green Eldest daughter- electric blue (like the glow of a screen) Rtf- yellow Actually romantic- hot pink Wish list- fluorescent green Wood- deep orange CANCELLED- red Honey- honey colored šŸ˜… Tloas- baby pink glitter

sierra

also love this concept of a video! excited to see if you chickens go back through the albums šŸ˜

ton

ET is tricky. Agree w yours but also don’t you end up anything but mine ie. I don’t want you living in the papers and on screens as an ex like my other Lovers But also doesn’t feel so glamorous, I just say thanks… so many

Samantha

I get the feeling that she didn’t want to give people anything to speculate over on this album which is why the songs are a little light on details. Like there’s sooo much lore on the 4 prior albums, especially TTPD, that I can see her wanting to take a break from that and wanting to protect both her & her relationship from being overanalysed.

ton

Opalite I love the teacup one but also I had a bad HABIT … referencing her exes drugs plus loml opening lyrics ā€œwho’s gonna stop usā€

Marshall

From (lilac!!) Eldest Daughter: both ā€˜when you found me I said I was busy, when I said I don’t believe in marriage, that was a lie’ AND the whole pipeline to ā€˜and things I said were dumb’ ugh, also the second verse esp the second part of the second verse from ā€˜pretty soon..’ love the bridge too side note: šŸ“ I SAW THIS TIKTOK THAT MADE ME REALISE THAT I COULD WRITE āœļø AN ESSAY ON WHY SHES WRITTEN ā€˜cause I THOUGHT that I’d never find that’ instead of using ā€˜cause I’d NEVER THOUGHT I’d find that’ ITS SO CRAZY INSIGHTFUL AND SIGNIFICANT ONCE YOU FATHOM IT IM TELLING YALL

Sara Garrity

Missed you guys so much 😭 so deeply grateful for this chat I feel seeeeeen

Katie LaFave

fate of ophelia-green elizabeth taylor-purple opalite-sky blue (obviously) father figure- burnt red eldest daughter-light pink ruin the friendship-yellow actually romantic-also green (not because of brat lol) wish list- lilac wood- neon blue cancelled- black or maroon honey-also yellow life of a showgirl- bright pink

imogen

saying the colour of the song before you 2 and then seeing if either of u agree was the funnest game omg

Cassy

i can’t believe an album with eldest daughter could be called anything but vulnerable. and with songs like father figure? there’s so much depth there i don’t get what’s missing for people but im happy not to be one of them i guess

Marshall

RTF (soft but saturated turquoise! - cover&piano as well as the Spotify lyrics background colour, yes ur 100% correct) the imagery and wording of wilted corsage verse is a valid crash out! (MerDer prom scene iykyk!!!!) All the halfway lines sound so good ā€˜have fun, it’s prom’ / ā€˜your smile, miles wide’ etc ā€˜Would’ve been the best mistake’ and ā€˜Staying friends is safe, doesn’t mean you should’ hits me harder every time

Vanessa

I think that feeling of understanding the album compared to the past albums might be influenced from how many times she broke down/ talked about each song. She did soooooo much more press on this album compared to ttpd, or even midnights. Almost feeling like what is there left to say.

hauntedwillow27

i love the beginning of ur videos when you squeal because i squeal back and i feel like we’re together LOVE U GUYS SM

Rianne van Ladesteijn

Fate of Ophelia - ā€˜I swore my loyalty to me, myself and I right before you lit my sky up’ Elizabeth Taylor - ā€˜all the right guys promised they’d stay under bright lights they withered away, but you bloom’ Opalite - ā€˜life is a song, it ends when it ends, you move on’ Father figure - ā€˜you made a deal with this devil turns out my dick’s bigger’ Eldest daughter - ā€˜pretty soon I learned cautious discretion’ hits hard but my hopeful favourite is ā€˜cause I thought that I’d never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were young’ Ruin the friendship - ā€˜goodbye and we’ll never know why’ Actually romantic - ā€˜and I know you think it comes off vicious but it’s precious, adorable’ Wishlist - ā€˜I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not’ Wood - ā€˜redwood tree it ain’t hard to see, his love was the key that opened my thighs’ - cause what do you mean that is a Taylor Swift lyric šŸ˜‚ simply iconic Cancelled! - ā€˜Now they’ve broken you like they’ve broken me but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp’ Honey - ā€˜and when anyone called me ā€˜lovely’, they were finding ways not to praise me but you say it like you’re in awe of me and you stay until the morning’ Life of a showgirl - ā€˜pain hidden by the lipstick and lace’ This was very fun!

leslie griffin

Emily’s favorite lyric in The Fate of Ophelia reminds me of All The Girls You’ve Loved Before.

Marshall

Actually romantic (more red than pink to me) ā€˜No man has ever loved me like you do’ cause whys she so funny same thing with ā€˜how many times has your boyfriend said why are we always talking bout her’ ā€˜I mind my business, god’s my witness that I don’t provoke it’ I’m a fan of the wordiness, it just clicks

Jamie Gibson

When people were being shitheads about Taylor and Jack needing to stop working together, I remember you girls saying in one of the TTPD videos (there were so many!) that we wouldn't get an album like folklore, evermore, midnights & TTPD without Jack because the trust and vulnerability won't be there between Taylor and any other collaborators. I find it hilarious that the same people saying that are now criticizing the album for being surface level. Bonny, your description in the reaction video of having depth without darkness has stayed with me. Perfect analogy for this album ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Daniel Jackson

I had similar thoughts specifically in relation to Travis with the depth conversation, and I think it’s truly because the songs don’t NEED to be so focused on the vulnerability. Think about how much we know about their relationship already because of how secure and open they have been. All the public appearances, the magazine articles, the interviews, the photos dumps, even the engagement. Before with past relationships the ONLY look we had into them was through her music. And that’s just not the case here. Imagine how hard this album would have hit if their relationship was as secretive as the toe relationship.

Elaine :)

I think another reason for the distance in the lyrics is because if this is her forever person and the life that she’s going to be building with him, this might be our first look into the privacy that she will have around her relationship and her family life moving forward in these new chapters as a wife and a mom.

Sarah

Literally just sitting here, watching them discuss Ruin the Friendship, and realizing that the 'wilted' state of the corsage is a bit of foreshadowing of the death to come later in the song. 😭

Mary Massed

My Actually Romantic lyrics is ā€œyou think I’m tacky, baby. Stop talking dirty to meā€ šŸ˜‚

Marshall

Wish list (I weirdly like it as a warm colour like homey family style a blanket orangey brown kinda thing) BASKETBALL HOOP LYRIC IS SUPERIOR AND SO VIVID I CAN SEE IT AND FEEL IT I AGREE honorary mention: ā€˜I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not, you caught me off guard’ just yes šŸ™Œ

Jen Mays

What a fun way to list things! Just watched the intro and going to share mine before watching yours so they are unswayed opinions. Ophelia (mossy green) - You saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia Elizabeth Taylor (amethyst, hello?) - All the right guys promised they'd stay, under bright lights they withered away but you bloom Opalite (peach) - But failure brings you freedom Father Figure (charcoal grey, like a finely tailored suit) - This empire belongs to me Eldest Daughter (periwinkle) - I've been dying just from trying to seem cool Ruin the Friendship (orange) - I flew home anyway, with so much left to say Actually Romantic (Barbie pink, but that's her fault since she said it) - [I mean...who doesn't love the tiny chihuahua reference?] Wish List (very light lavender) - I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not Wood (unimaginatively wood, grain and all. But like an oak color) - New Heights of manhood. [cough] Cancelled (blood red) - Come with me, when they see us they'll run, Something wicked this way comes Honey (amber) - But you say it like you're in awe of me and you stay until the morning. TLOAS (deep scarlet, think theater curtain red) - Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace.

Ben

Another fucked up thing about the dog lyrics in the life of a showgirl is that the paparazzi are like dogs barking and she is ā€œkittyā€ and that i just thought that was offensive.

Jenny

The lyric Emily mentioned from Father Figure really reminds me of when she rhymes devices, prices, vices and crisis in Anti-Hero!!

Jenny

I think a good example they gave was when they were talking about wish list

Marshall

AYHTDWS SHADE AND SIDEEYES HAHSGDDG

sierra

a donut šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ u right tho

Katie LaFave

also bonny the lyric you picked from ruin the friendship is very marjorie coded

Katie LaFave

YES I THOUGHT THE SAME THING

Izzy

Love this!! I have an idea for you guys now that there’s 12 albums you could do a little game where you press shuffle on each album and whatever song it gives you you put into an overall Taylor Swift album (with one track from each album to make 12) and then compare each of ur random combined albums to see who got the better lucky dip album šŸ˜‚šŸ©·

sierra

i guess it’s the difference between having 1 vulnerable song vs 30 of them. the vulnerability is there, but is it there at the scale of most of her other albums? the question of if it has to be there is also a thing too! not necessarily! fun is fun!

Jenny MacRunnel

Elizabeth Taylor (my favorite song on the album, it grows with each listen, too): "Be my NY when Hollywood hates me" along with the next lyric "You're only as hot as your next hit baby" Its just so showgirl, it applies to both her and Elizabeth Taylor, and I love the way she sings it, it just scratches an itch in my brain. Father Figure (2nd favorite song)--"I'll dry your tears with my sleeve" It really evokes the dynamic she's speaking of here. The young protege, crying when things go wrong, and the "Father Figure" will comfort her--but its all about a power dynamic, and its so sexist and sleazy. She said so much just with this one lyric. But every lyric in this song says so much. These 2 songs alone make me wonder what people are talking about when they are criticizing Taylor's writing on this album. If it had Folklore or Evermore production on these songs, no one would be saying this. The writing is amazing, and I think we are just beginning to fathom it. I think the reason we may be feeling like we already know this album so well and have fathomed it, is because its 12 songs. It won't take as long. But I still think there's much to figure out here, a lot of layers we haven't uncovered.

Kristy

Would love for you to do this with every album!

Jenny Fowler

I also really love that during Ruin the Friendship she mentions a disco ball, which of course is like the mirrorball and both are track 6.

Tess7

I love this album. The storytelling and imagery in Father Figure, Ruin The Friendship and LOASG is so good. The Rep influences dripping all over it is satisfying. I think Cancelled is a lot deeper than people are getting - I loved your take on the Gucci lyric. Welcome back chickens šŸ˜ŠšŸ«¶ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Paloma Bennett

Thank you for sharing your favorite lyrics Bonny and Em!!! I love hearing you fathom Taylor’s songs. Here are my favorite lyrics from teaching song from The Life of a Showgirl: - The Fate of Ophelia ā€œYou wrap around me like a chain (A chain), a crown (A crown), a vine (A vine). Pulling me into the fireā€ - Elizabeth Taylor ā€œAll the right guys promised they'd stay. Under bright lights, they withered away. But you bloomā€ - Opalite ā€œOh, my Lord. Never met no one like you before. You had to make your own sunshine. But now, the sky is opalite, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.ā€ - Father Figure ā€œ You want a fight? You found it, I got the place surrounded. You'll be sleeping with the fishes before you know you're drowning.ā€ - Eldest Daughter ā€œEvery youngest child felt. They were raised up in the wild. But now you're home.ā€ - Ruin The Friendship ā€œIt was not convenient, no. But I whispered at the grave. ā€œShould've kissed you anyway," ooh.ā€ - Actually Romantic ā€œYou think I'm tacky, baby. Stop talking dirty to me.ā€ - Wi$h Li$t ā€œGot me drеaming 'bout a driveway with a basketball hoop. Boss up, settle down, got a wish (Wish) list (List). I just want you.ā€ - Wood ā€œGirls, I don't need to catch the bouquet, mm. To know a hard rock is on the way.ā€ - CANCELLED! ā€œ Welcome to my underworld where it gets quite dark. At least you know exactly who your friends are. They're the ones with matching scars.ā€ - Honey ā€œ But you touched my face. Redefined all of those blues when you say "honey.ā€ - The Life of a Showgirl (feat. Sabrina Carpenter) ā€œDo you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins? They ripped me off like false lashes and then threw me away.ā€

Marshall

Wood: ā€˜daisy’s bare naked I was distraught he loves me not’ I love the little YOYOK reference YES BONNY ā€˜fingers crossed until you put your hand on mine’ is such a calming visual like hearing someone say it’s okay now you’re okay, like your person’s effect on your anxiety over your lovelife and just future in general ā€˜Wishing on a falling star’ šŸ’« is another example of peak humour from Tay Honorary mention: ā€˜it’s you and me forever dancing in the dark, all over me, it’s understood’ is a cool unobvious metaphor I adore it

Alistair

Is it that the depth of the album is not too deep, or the fact that the two of you have advanced PhD's from two decades of fathoming Taylor Swift songs?

Katie LaFave

BONNY WE ARE ALL GONNA NEED YOU STOP SHADING AYHTDWS

Amelie

i have conflicting feelings about the depth thing. i feel like this album is deep, and the concepts of each songs are deep and she is being very vulnerable within the songs. i think the element that is lacking in the songs are the diaristic lyrics. like what bonnie said with begin again and i always think about delicate 'dark jeans and your nikes look at you, oh damn never seen that colour blue, just think of the fun things we could do', like that literally feels like you are in her head hearing her inner monologue, which i think lacks in this album, i no longer feel like im in her head, more like she's aware she's telling billions of people about her and travis' relationship. that's why i think ruin the friendship is my favourite and i would argue the best written song on the album, cause it has that inner monologue in the verses.

Vanessa

The eldest daughter bridge on second listen made me think of the mine music video and so I associate it with purple

Katie LaFave

I feel like it’s valid that Taylor doesn’t want to talk about Joe or Matty right now! she’s in the happiest, best relationship of her life, and she wants to talk about that! Also like you said, there are references to her past like the one lyric in the bridge of wish list, in the 1st verse of wood, and in the bridge of honey

Cassy

i don’t personally think this album is any less vulnerable than her last few. in fact it’s more vulnerable to me that she’s being completely open and transparent and not leaving much room for interpretation. she’s also never sounded more herself on a record. i also find that vulnerable. i guess it’s just difference of opinion on what vulnerability really means

Marshall

Sameeeee!! Exactly the way I feel! TLOAS and Midnights are my absolute preference in the pop releases of hers. And here for example ones from this album which I am entranced by are Elizabeth Taylor and Cancelled! which I hear are rep stans’ favs (rep vault believers) whereas for me reputation has never been a top choice and still I am obsessing over these particular songs

Katie LaFave

I understand what you’re saying Bonny about wish list about you wanting her to talk more about her past, but I feel like that doesn’t make sense with the concept that’s she’s created with the song! like I guess she could’ve said, I have a wish list and none of my exes could fulfill it, but you do! Other than that, I don’t really see how what you wanted would’ve worked

Cooler Fan

Well, Lover had a mixture of it all but didn't get enough credit (until now maybe).

InƩs FernƔndez A.

I think that you're fathoming it quicker, not because of a lack of depth, but because of a lack of heaviness/darkness. This album path is lighter, so thinking and processing the songs doesn't drain you. I feel excited, light, and fun listening to it, even when I get into my feelings, I look back with a smile instead of a tear. I'm not rumbling about the what-ifs, the mistakes, or the pain. Instead, I remember that I'm not there anymore, that it gets better.

Cassy

each songs colours imo šŸ«¶šŸ¼ the fate of ophelia i get a mix of the mint green from the cover & a bright barbie pink. elizabeth taylor: purple!!! i’m sure everyone’s saying this. opalite: light blue like a sky blue father figure: deep chocolate brown eldest daughter: lavender/light purple ruin the friendship: green like nature actually romantic: hot pink wish list: baby blue wood: redwood lol jk but maybe orange honey: yellow is obvious but yellow the life of a showgirl: like a deep navy blue

Dany

Finally a new video🄹 Iā€˜ve been deprived this week without you girls

Rachel L

The lyric I love in Honey is ā€œyou can be my forever-night standā€, mostly because on the first few listens, I thought she was talking about a literal nightstand next to your bed. I then put it together that it’s like a one-night stand but for forever! So sweet

Marshall

I think people don’t realise how hard it is to come up with a clever yet simple metaphor that fits, as a lyric for a Taylor Swift album, song and they get all ā€˜hold my (ego) beer’ or ā€˜here’s a TikTok where I change the lyrics I don’t like’ (spoiler alert it was total rubbish) nonsense, so they easily underestimate the craft complexity because of all that

Katie LaFave

I don’t think it would’ve made really any sense for Taylor to reference jake on 1989 because she already does so much on 1989 where she talks about Harry, but then she also talks a lot about fame! I mean she talks so much about non-relationship stuff that all the vault tracks were about Harry!

Jordyn

I don’t think sadness should be equated with depth. That seems to be what Bonny was looking for there. To give more than she did in that song to the past wouldn’t have made sense. The same can be said for the rest of the album too. She gave sadness on TTPD over the previous relationships. This is her life right now and I think being this in your face with her happiness and how right her relationship feels is very telling from her. The contrast is clear from her previous situation

Cooler Fan

I think no one is showing respect to her songwriting when she has referenced so many songs in Opalite alone, but no one recognises it. Travis made her happy.

Ebru

The way she delivers that line, always gets me. It’s my favourite part!

Lizzie Johnson

I think this album is very poignant but realising that’s not necessarily the same as depth. Taylor said each song packs a punch and I really do agree with that… I do feel like each song hits me hard, but actually that’s partly because the messaging is so clear compared to other albums. This album has really given me a lot to reflect on and take into my real life… Eldest Daughter, Ruin the Friendship and Cancelled being three of the most impactful for me from a messaging perspective. Actually Romantic as well šŸ’• and then the melodies are some of my favourites ever.. the Fate of Ophelia and Elizabeth Taylor in particular ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Marshall

Fun fact I found out about the composition of ā€˜Eldest Daughter’ that made me fall even more in love with that song: Throughout the entire song the accompaniment flows around the main chord, always touching it but never landing quite right on it, up until the bridge ending and ā€˜but now you’re home’ where she literally finally finishes with the home chord!! (It’s G btw) additionally the whole song is very simply written which resembles this safety theme that it gives off, it’s tiptoeing around before she actually arrives home at the end both lyrical sense as well as melodically in a metaphorical way each time. It’s so sweet and smart 🄲

Katie LaFave

with the 2nd lyric you picked Em from wood it also connects to yoyok when she says ā€œi picked the peddles he loves me notā€

Paloma Bennett

I agree. I actually feel like there is depth in this album. The Life of a Showgirl is my second favorite Taylor Swift album.

Jenny

I agree that depth doesn’t equal sadness but I don’t think that’s what the girls are saying. One of the examples they gave about depth was simply knowing more about the relationship/the person. The example Bonny gave from Begin Again was a happy kind of depth - the specificity of ā€˜the movies that your family watches every single Christmas’

Brenda

Emily's face when Bonny was explaining why 1989 isn't her fav albumšŸ˜‚ LOL

C

Everyone crying about Eldest Daughter and Ruin the Friendship, and I'm here getting emotional with Father Figure. Every time she says "this empire belongs to me" it gives me chills and a lump n my throat

kayla

Rather than lyrics, I’m going to go with colors Ophelia - deep orange Elizabeth Taylor - dark purple Opalite - obs opalite Father Figure - gray/brown (probably bc it makes me think of The Sopranos) Eldest Daughter - mint Ruin the Friendship - light orange/yellow Actually Romantic - silver Wish list - gold Cancelled - black Honey - lilac Life of a showgirl - red Idk this is just what is in my minds eye haha

InƩs FernƔndez A.

In my opinion, this discourse about the lack of depth also has to do with the generalized concept of sadness or sorrow being more profound than happiness. It happens time and time again in entertainment, when people dismiss a comedy in front of a drama in terms of difficulty, critical praise, and awards success. It also has to do with the morbid fascination we all have with other people's dramas, especially celebrities; "the empathetic hunger descends" upon everyone. We idolize the tortured and punish the rest.

Jenny

😩

Bekah

That’s my favourite lyric of the whole album! It has a physical weight to it.

Kristen

I just had a thought that she wrote that lyric from Eldest Daughter -- "I've been dying just from trying to seem cool" -- while on the Eras Tour, when she was arguably "dying" from pushing herself so hard physically, while also being the "coolest" she's ever been in her life. She beat her body up so much while people pleasing the entire world.

Marshall

ā€˜Shattered glass is a lot more sharp’ is giving ā€˜hurt people hurt people’ and ā€˜snake only bites if you step on it’ I love it I also like ā€˜poison thorny flowers, welcome to my underworld/can’t you see my infamy loves company’

Katrina

There are so many good lyrics! The one that sticks with me the most is ā€œwelcome to my underworld where it gets quite dark at least you know exactly who your friends are they’re the ones with matching scarsā€. I think I like it because of the underworld imagery and the ā€œmatching scarsā€ line always makes me think of the movie Scream 4 lol

CAM

I still will say that Ruin the Friendship is incredible in its connection to Marjorie, Question, Forever Winter, and more. It closes the Matty chapter. It gives us insight into her peace now with Travis because she's able to look back and say thank goodness I answered the question.... Idk, I could do a four hour breakdown šŸ˜‚ The other songs on this .... I think your fathoming on wish list being all contradictions is brilliant. The rest.... Yeah seem pretty straightforward

Catherine

In terms of depth, I immediately get a visual of an Olympic diver vs someone drowning. Does an Olympic diver go deep into the pool? Yes. But it's quick and looks so polished, then they pop right back to the surface. We're used to Taylor looking (writing? sounding?) like she's drowning and we've equated that to "being deep"

Abby Carter

Totally agree with you! It is such a powerful moment!

Marshall

Graffiti my whole damn life - the graffiti instead of paint is also quicker like: I need you to do it now, right away, there and then, I can’t wait, I want you to make me yours immediately, at least to me that is how I see it

MarkH

I think there is depth and info in these songs. The Fate of Ophelia gives us an idea of what she was feeling before he showed up, and how different she feels now. Elizabeth Taylor, with 'under bright lights, they withered away, but you bloom" is quite powerful. Opalite is actually sad, I think. "Dancing through the lightning strikes" is a great, but sad, metaphor. "You were in it for real, she was in her phone" is extremely descriptive and quite sad. "You had to make your own sunshine" is also sad and very descriptive of Travis. Father Figure is possibly the deepest song on the album and i can't believe anyone listening to it could think otherwise. Eldest Daughter is throwing people off with the internet stuff at the beginning, but "Every youngest child felt they were raised up in the wild, but now you're home" is an incredibly powerful line. That's just the first 5 songs, which I think right now the best 5 song run she has ever done. I could go on with the rest of them. This is just as deep as any other Taylor Swift album. The criticism is bullshit in my view.

Lizzie Johnson

Also, I’ve really started noticing a clear difference between lyrics and messaging… for example, in my opinion, TTPD has the best lyrics she’s ever written but I think the album actually says a lot less about life than TLOAS… the anthology maybe more so, but the main album is mostly about different ways to express her heartbreak ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ which I love so much but I don’t feel it teaches me as much about life because it’s more just an insight into her personal diary rather than different takes on life if that makes sense

Katie LaFave

I think there will be full songs that compare Joe and Matty to Travis on the next album! I just think right now she doesn’t wanna focus on them. She wants to focus on how in love she is with Travis! like she doesn’t wanna be talking about her past because that’s what she was doing with tortured poets! ttpd was so focused on matty and joe and this album is about travis and that’s great

Jenny

Interesting! I would only agree with that drowning analogy for ttpd, I don’t think any of the other albums feel like drowning, personally!

Katie LaFave

off topic, but I need to know if you guys do plan on listening to the Ryan Seacrest interview because there’s some teaaa about midnight rain that you guys need to know

David

I think part of the reason her songs don't feel as deep is because we know what her and Travis are like, she shares more and is more open. We're used to getting insights into a mysterious behind closed doors relationship with Joe or a short lived heavy romance with Matty. So she shares stuff about their love, but we already know how happy she is because she's not shut away from us now

Marshall

In honey šŸÆ I’m in love with the ā€˜honey I’m home..’ and sweetie it’s yours..’ the flow of both bits is immaculate, Also! ā€˜But you touch my face, redefine all of those BLUES when you say..’ is a hella killa good stuff #cool

Jenny

Omw that scream 4 reference šŸ˜‚ so good

Elizabeth Brown

Ruin the Friendship is the best!! Especially the acoustic version

David

Yes, 100% the same

Nathalia

ā€œYou guys have lots of videos to catch up onā€ …. Me watching every video they drop within the first hour it’s up….

InƩs FernƔndez A.

My favorite lyric in Elizabeth Taylor is "Been number one but I never had two And I can't have fun if I can't have..." but she doesn't say you the first time, it's not just him, the thing she needs to have fun/be happy, she needs both the success/career and the partner/love.

kayla

I want to jump on at Eldest Daughter (bc that’s where I currently am in the video) to add the lyric from the bridge, ā€œCause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were youngā€. Ugh, it feels like nostalgia and that’s the only way I can explain it.

Michelle

Here’s the thing — Showgirl is not CRYPTIC. people have been misconstruing poetry with her lyrics being too cryptic to get the tea, basically since Rep. This is the first time she’s not being hyper cryptic to protect people she loves. She gets to just say exactly what she thinks and feels. And people feel like because they don’t have to pry, that it’s not deep. But she can be deep, and poetic, and vulnerable, without having to be secretive and cryptic. I’m happy for her to just be able to be straightforward and uncomplicated, while still having incredible breadth.

Jenny

That’s a really good point!

MarkH

Now I'm listening to your choices. I could have easily picked the terminal uniqueness line as well. The thing about Taylor is that the fame stands out, but the terminal uniqueness was there before the fame, and is what produced the fame. That is, the fame is a product of the unique person that she is; she is not unique because of the fame, she is famous because of the specific uniqueness she has. i

Marshall

The title track’s bridge to outro is just incredible I can’t, I also ā€˜you’re never ever gonna/never gonna wanna’ she ate with that ā€˜the more you play the more that you pay’ is amazing 😻

Michelle

Nailed it on its head, yes. Well said. This is especially arrowed toward women, and even moreso, single women who date.

Marshall

Thank you girls for everything that you do for us! We love you always and appreciate you and all your hard work so very much, hope you’re having a wonderful day today xx

Megan Nash

I agree completely!!

Hunter

I was actually with Emily on the TLOAS color being like a cushiony red (from theatre seats). Orange works too ofc. Loved this video, take care and cya next week 🫶

Megan Nash

Yes, I agree! We're not trying to figure out why she's writing such a sad song when she's supposed to be in a happy relationship... or why a lyric doesn't fit with what we publicly know about her life. The vibe of TLOAS matches exactly with what her life seems to be.

Leander

Love this lyrical exploration! I don’t think this album is that deep because she said it was made because she needed to find purpose and inspiration to get through the eras tour. Pretty new into her relationship. New vibes all around. Lighting in a bottle is a bold feeling but you don’t really know what it’s capable of. I think this album is the arch into the new Taylor.

Lisa

The thing I love about the lyric 'glowing like the end of a cigarette' is how the cigarette could be a simile to describe how as a showgirl - your life in the business is often limited before you are stale and flicked aside - much like the glow of the end of a cigarette - as soon as it is inhaled, after the short glow that gives satisfaction to the consumer, it turns dull, to ash, and it is flicked away! Such a good lyric!

First Encounter—A Historical Romance Podcast

Have you girlies discovered the new podcast, The Swiftie and the Scholar? It's fantastic! Angela—the swiftie (forever fan) sits down with her Uncle Jerry—the scholar (a retired University literature professor) to analyze Taylor Lyrics. He reads the lyrics first and analyzes them like poetry before listening to the songs. It's amazing, and Uncle Jerry has developed a ton of respect for Taylor and her writing skills!

scout

these are my colours :):) ophelia: dark green (like plants or water in a lagoon) elizabeth taylor: purple (rich like classy royalty vibes + "violet eyes") opalite: light blue father figure: rich dark brown (mahogany, whiskey) eldest daughter: pink (might just be because of the lyric video lol) ruin the friendship: light green (like grass + debut vibes) actually romantic: red (like love hearts :P) wi$h li$t: gold wood: brown like the bark of a tree lol (also cause the lyric video is taylor in the brunette wig) cancelled: black (maybe cause this one is the most rep coded?) honey: gold but not sparkly? (the colour of honey basically :P) life of a showgirl: sparkly orange!

Deanna Smith

I definitely see why there is a conversation around the depth, as it's what we're used to getting. That being said, I personally think that with how vulnerable Taylor has been with us in the past, she deserves to have an album thats just fun, you know? I think that it's probably really nice for her, considering she just ended the Eras tour last year, where she was VERY MUCH in the spotlight and being vulnerable. I think that TS13 will be really vulnerable but in a fun way, now that shes engaged

Lizzie Johnson

I would love to just take a moment to dwell on one of my favourite lyrics from the whole album, which is actually the one on Bonny's t-shirt! "I'm immortal now baby dolls... I couldn't if I tried." The fact that no-one can ever take away this legendary status that Taylor now has, despite what the rest of her career trajectory is like... her legacy will live on, and she will forever be remembered as one of the greatest artists of all time <3 Love getting to celebrate that with this community!

H29

Fate of Ophelia: light green- the venom stole her sanity Elizabeth Taylor: sapphire - under bright lights they withered away Opalite: glittery white- life is a song, it ends when it ends Father figure: dark moody red- I got the place surrounded Eldest daughter: light pink- cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back Ruin the friend ship: orange- would've been the best mistake Actually romantic: her classic red lip colour- no man has ever loved me like you do Wish list: light purple- I thought I had it right, once, twice but I did not Wood: gold or a burnt orange- fingers crossed until you put your hand on mine Cancelled: smoky black- but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp Honey: yellow- when anyone called me sweetheart it was passive aggressive at the bar Life of a show girl: mint green- I took her pearls of wisdom hung them from my neck, I paid my dues with every bruise I knew what to expect

Brenda1989

I think that the album doesn’t lack depth I think that this is the most true and honest she has ever felt and there is nothing to hide so there nothing to decipher, no code to crack. Think about it since folklore maybe even Lover, she has been lying to her self and thus us. I think this album tells us exactly what their relationship is about it’s pure, it’s true and it’s fun. Imagine needing to make 12 albums before u get ur first truly happy album and people don’t get it???

Sophie Williams

Awwwww yay you're back!!!!! Ahhhhh missed you chickens so much and what perfect timing you uploaded. I had a blast enjoying this very different but fun video over my coffee and breakfast. Very much love this concept and absolutely need to do this for the other albums later on which I'm very excited for and can't wait for. Anyway I hope you both had a nice and restful break and again thanks for the surprise little video and hope you enjoy the rest of your week and I'll see you next week for usual video scheduling again. Love ya girls sm. šŸ˜˜šŸ§”šŸ’šXxxx

Soph

LOVE the colors cause that’s 100% how i work fate of ophelia-creamsicle elizabeth taylor-dark green opalite-opalite obviously father figure-brown/redish like leather eldest daughter-dark pink ruin the friendship-light greenish like grass actually romantic- light green and black wish list- blue wood- red cancelled- grey? honey- gold/yellow the life of a showgirl- teal

sierra

i can see that!

Sarah B

Her past relationships have been complicated and tumultuous. This relationship is less complicated. Because they both just like each other. So there's not drama and dramatic conflict between them to explore and explain, apparently. So maybe more layers/complexity will come over time as their relationship goes on -- even if it's not negative.

Julia DiBernardo

Maybe it’s just me but I really didn’t need any more Joe or Matty commentary on showgirl. Didn’t we get enough of that alone on TTPD? I think she referenced them and her past enough on this album. And I don’t think it’s necessary to have songs going in depth comparing them to Travis. I like that the focus is on this happy and loving relationship and how he makes her feel. She’s moved on and is in a better place let’s celebrate that with her!

Soph

i 100% agree about the different producers balancing the depth of the album

Sarah

22:09 Taylor is definitely a rapper. Her rhymes and flows and different pockets she hits on this album definitely prove that. Just waiting for TS 13 to be a rap album lol

Marisa

Not so much for its artistic value, but I think going from "I wouldn't marry me either, a pathological people pleaser" to "I don't need to catch the bouquet to know a hard rock is on the way" not even a year into the relationship is a HUGE deal for her and it hits me every time I hear it. 🄹

Fede

OF COURSE WE WOULD LOVE VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE FOR EVERY ALBUM šŸ„°šŸ„³šŸ˜‹šŸ¤—āœØšŸ’ÆšŸ«¶ (whenever you decide to make them!)

Antoinette

My favourite lyric in Wood is ā€œpenny’s unlucky, I took him back and then stepped on a crack, the black cat laughedā€ I love how this refers to the superstition of stepping on a crack and breaking your mothers back which then links into So Long London when she says ā€œmy spine split from carrying us up the hillā€. Her brain I can’t. Also I think of Opalite as iridescent in colour, like shiny shimmery goodness!

Kristen

i looooooove ā€œThey ripped me off like false lashes and then threw me awayā€ in Showgirl because of the play on ā€œripped offā€ like how a lot of people in show business feel taken advantage of and pairing it with something fake like false lashes which are used during performances/showgirl work and whatever. idk there’s something about it that hits me every time. such a good simile: false lashes and being a showgirl.

Fede

at the moment, i think overall i feel like Bonny when it comes to this album, and the discussion about producers was enlightening 😌. that said, a few songs have skyrocketed to my top fave songs so it's gonna be hard to rank it among the other albums

InƩs FernƔndez A.

Agreed, I think people are not fathoming a lot of lyrics because instead of using obscure Victorian references and vernacular she is using internet slang and contemporary references, specifically to her own past songs.

sydney

I feel like this album is the perfect album to come off of the confusion and intense lyrical albums Taylor has had recently. I’m also an evermore girl and while I love how the past 4 albums have been breaking Brian’s and take months or years to fathom, I feel like this album while not being super specific is a sonic and melodic representation of how her life has been and I feel like it’s the perfect shift and album in that way🩷loving hearing ur thoughts and fathoming, it helps us all fathom further

Fede

i may be an evermore girlie first and foremost, but Taylor saying "You made a deal with this devil, turns out my dick's bigger" is the most poetic, most meaningful thing I've ever heard

Dre

I don't think it's about comparing them to travis, but rather the same level of depth they had

Justin

Max and Shellback do seem to bring out a different side of Taylor's songwriting. Not that there's nothing deep in their songs, but I just think being such close friends with Jack (and somewhat Aaron) naturally lends itself to her being more deep and vulnerable in their songs together. Her relationship with Max/Shellback is strictly professional, and I do think that shows in the music. I hesitate to use the word "manufactured", but it kind of is in the sense that Max and Shellback are bop makers - that's what they set out to do, not to fuck us up with poetry. In one of the Showgirl voice memos, Max was referencing a hypothetical party where people were dancing to a certain song on the album, and that’s a good indicator of where his head is at. He wants his songs to slap first and foremost lol

Fede

opalite has so many lyrics that hit me in my feels, but maybe "But failure brings you freedom" hits the hardest. such a profound lesson that applies to anyone, not just at her level of fame

Taylor

I would love it if yall turned this into a series with the other albums!

Wendy Horrell

First let me say I had a long ass message that I was in the middle of but my kid needed me and when I came back to my phone it was gone. Maybe it posted but I don’t see it šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø. My main point was I think people don’t think this album is deep because there’s no over analyzing, there’s no tea where we are like omg can you believe that (except maybe with Actually Romantic) or oh what guy is this about. I think there is a lot of insight to her relationship with Travis. It shows her confidence in it even a year ago when this album was done. Shows a self confidence in herself with the fun sassy lyrics and not afraid to say things she normally wouldn’t say. There were a few digs at past relationships but I truly think she is over that. Shes closed that chapter and is not going to keep bringing up other men. I think she made this album for the general public. You don’t need all the past history to enjoy it. She wanted people to hear a song and see their love story in it too. I’ve seen so many edits with every song on this album. People can fit so many of their lives into the meaning of these songs. A song can be upbeat and have vulnerable deep lyrics. Shake it Off has some deep lyrics if you just look at that without the music. All the lyrics you guys are sharing are deep lyrics, sentimental lyrics. The social media negativity that surrounded this album is not real and just a void of people trying to smear her. I mean it’s Actually Romantic of them 🤭. Look at the charts this album is still going strong. I’ve seen so many non Swifties enjoying it. Reactors who’ve never listened to Taylor loving the album, loving the music video. I think this album is part of a bigger picture. Interviews she’s done like NH which was so rare to see and the general public being like oh wait she’s pretty funny. They didn’t know Taylor that way. The docuseries coming out too is all part of a whole. Maybe I’m one of those Swifties that just loves everything she does (I’ll admit I am lol) but for me this album shines because it just radiates fun and happiness and that’s all I want for her. She is who she is because of her range and how she can just do it all.

Brittany DeLara

What’s different is it isn’t cryptic. It’s very straight forward and lighthearted. It’s definitely a great album but there isn’t all the guesswork and questions and anxiety in this album making it easier to understand more immediately.

Adyson

LOVE TO SEE YOU BACK!!! I Think it will be interesting to See you react to the New Florence and The Machine album cause Aaron prduced the whole album

Amanda Mittelman

IMO depth without darkness initially feels more easily digestible, but that doesn’t mean depth isn’t happening. Also, I think she says a LOT about her relationship with Trav by what isn’t said. There is markedly less anxiety, uncertainty, negatively perceived fate, exhaustion, fear, etc in those songs. So without having to explicitly open up her relationship to the public, we can actually interpret a lot about how she feels because of the type of art she’s making in this season.

Rhonda

Wood…penny’s unlucky(made a bad decision), I took him back( Matty), I stepped on a crack(he is still a dickhead)the black cat laughed( at Taylor for trying to pull that sh!t off again). lol. That’s why music is so….subjective. I love this song!!!

Julia DiBernardo

I think it’s pretty impossible to ask for that same level of depth at this point in time. She was with Joe for 6 years and several of those years were difficult and distant. And Matty was a tumultuous relationship that ended out of nowhere. Travis and her were together for less than a year when she made this album. I’m sorry if this comes off as rude but I think fans are asking way too much out of Taylor right now. And I think there’s tons of depth about her and Travis on this album, it’s just being said in a much more straightforward way. It’s only going to build with more time, especially because they have settled into a consistency now and there isn’t a whirlwind of a tour going on.

Aubrey McMichael

please react to olivia dean’s new album!!

Alexandra Bennett

I think you guys said it perfectly by saying the album was easy to fathom. I couldn’t put my finger on how I was feeling but I think that’s it. With folklore, evermore, midnights and TTPD it took me like a year to GET IT and really grasp the concept of each song but with Showgirl I listened to it for like 10 days then was like ā€œok I got itā€. With TTPD I don’t think I listed to anything else for 6 months straight so it was weird I moved on to listening to other things so quickly after Showgirl

sydney

Also some fav lyrics! Father figure: This empire belongs to me, leave it with me (chills and tears every time) Honey: summer time spritz pink skies, winter green kiss all mine The life of a showgirl: Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace, sequins are forever and now I know the life of a showgirl Eldest Daughter: cause I thought that I’d never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were young

domdodom

are you guys still going to react to ryan secrets and roula radio Interviews ?

Laura R

You fucked me up with the thunder like a drum connection! More thoughts on "storm inside a teacup"... Have you fathomed that stirring tea quickly can look like a tornado or a hurricane? Someone is stirring this tea to make you see/feel a storm. I like this in relation to the whole opalite being man-made/make your own happiness theme. It could be you stirring the tea/making the storm bigger than it needs to be, or it could be someone else; either way calm down babe, the man-made drama will pass.

Fede

not really my favorite on CANCELLED! but I just love that song so much and even random ones like "I salute you if you're much too much to handle" give me such a rush?!?

Julia

I love the lyric from Father Figure "they want to see you rise, they don't want you to reign"

Julia

"and things I said were dumb, cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were young" is so beautiful and vulnerable

Amanda Christon

I think the ā€œsurface levelā€ of this album is extremely intentional and that’s why I don’t think it is a valid criticism to say this album isn’t good automatically because it isn’t deep. It’s an artistic choice. And like you girls said, I think it’s actually so necessary after TTPD, almost as a palate cleanser from the emotional trauma, to have an album like this. It just makes the story line of her life through albums that much more interesting. And I think the sound and lyrical choices are authentic to how she is feeling, because she doesn’t need to air things out in gruesome detail the same way to process things right now

Molly

The depth of this album is in the production choices and references to The Industry/Showgirls past/Old Hollywood/other artists who were taken advantage of or chewed up by the media. (The amount of Elizabeth Taylor references alone is a lot!!) And she told us that would be the case on the New Heights podcast and in the BTS of Fate of Ophelia! She told us TTPDs focus was lyrics, this one isn't. She's also thinking in terms of her legacy now, so it makes sense for her to want a fun, lighthearted album in her catalog, especially after the last few albums.

Lauren

all my white diamonds and lovers are forever don’t you ever end up anything but mine

Norah Brooks

Elizabeth Taylor simply has to be a dark VIOLET

Linds K

When contemplating the ā€œdepthā€ of the album compared to her previous ones, I think we need to take into consideration that with the previous albums (at least since you started this channel), Taylor was still quite secretive and kind of in hiding with her personal life. She was limiting what she shared with us directly so with each new album we only had those lyrical clues and had to guess what she was talking about more. Since her eras tour and new happy comfortable relationship she seems a bit more free and open (obviously still very private, but comparatively speaking) so it’s a little less guess work to know what she’s talking about. Would we think this album was as straight forward and obvious if she was just as private with her relationship with Travis as she was with Joe and Matty? I’m just not sure if it’s 100% that these songs aren’t breaking our brains because they’re less deep so much as it is that we have a little more insight to build from.

Lauren

There is a confidence in the album that has not been in her any album of hers since Fearless. And I think THAT makes it such an interesting Taylor swift album because she was sort of riddled with insecurity in many different ways after fearless (when she became a global star, when she started darker relationships, when people started second guessing her talent, when people that didn’t know her had a LOT to say about her).

Julia

some of my favorite lyrics: "it's you and me forever dancing in the dark" "at least you know exactly who your friends are, they're the ones with marching scars" "but you touch my face, redefine all of those blues when you say honey" "pain hidden by the lipstick and lace"

Lauren

I would be interested in hearing more about the positive songs that give a lot of depth. I could argue that all of those songs are tinged with an insecurity or an insincerity because she’s trying to seem more unaffected on the outside when she’s dying on the inside.

Hayden

Thank you for this take and the breakdown! I haven’t really connected with album as much as TTPD but the songs I love, I LOVE. You two are the best!

Mex

for me, the album isn't missing depth. i think relationships find their depth in the mundane; in the piece by piece of the building blocks that stack up on one another to take shape as a whole. taylor writing from a place of confidence in a romantic relationship is a new creative writing prompt for her, and wanting to guard the details is understandable. tloas feels like her internal highlight reel from the time on the eras tour

Amanda Christon

I wanted to say this but didn’t know how, you put it into words so well šŸ‘šŸ»

Lauren

She also took Joe back (often) so I fear this is a double muse song!

Amanda Christon

Wow thank you explaining this, I thought literal night stand too 🤣

Sara Silva

I love Taylor and the album was fun!but I’ve already stopped listening to it about 2 weeks after it came out. Tortured poets, for example, I would listen to the whole album everyday. This one i don’t know i vibed to it and danced to it but just not sticking with me.

Deb

I am so disappointed in Bonny and Emily's comments and assessment of this album. I expected better. I find the songs on this album to offer depth in both musical score and lyric approach that is new and challenging to unravel. I am perplexed about why Bonny prefers that Taylor would offer greater detail on lyrics of Matty calling her "too high to remember in the morning" rather than trying to understand the art that is being offered and learn from it. Invoking an emotion with choice, concise phrasing is more complex than meets the eye. I subscribe to several other blogs and have learned a lot from their analysis and insight and am disappointed Bonny and Emily are so dismissive, doing surface analysis and falling into the "vultures who only like Taylor's songs when they are dripping with misery". You have not even scratched the surface of Eldest Daughter. Think of Taylor as the pioneer in the music industry paving the way for other female artist.

Lauren

I just… think there are enough songs on showgirl that do that and it would be retreading subjects.

Rhonda

They never broke up Joe…is not in her conversation. He was a slow, boring fizzle out. Matty still has her going a little…just ask Charli. lol

Katie LaFave

also like this album is about what was going on during the 2nd part of the eras tour! she was fully dating travis at that point! she had moved on from the pain of joe and matty! like i don’t blame her for not focusing or even comparing them to travis

Kailey's Corner

I think we already know so much about Taylor & Travis and they're relationship because she's never got to be so public about a relationship before. I think she's sharing fun upbeat stuff because she doesn't have to shroud stuff in mystery and cryptic lyrics to communicate stuff to us anymore. I actually think it's extremely vulnerable to display her joy and sexuality and explore some new themes that aren't so layered but are more literal. She shared SO much in the podcast episode and we've never had that from her before. It makes sense that if she feels like she can communicate with us so blatantly that the album wouldn't be as hard to "decode" what she means if that makes sense! That's how I see it anyway

Linds K

I didn’t take their assessments as dismissive at all, and obviously they have nothing but respect and awe for Taylor’s songwriting. I think everything they said is totally valid, I was just offering up something additional to consider. This album does feel more digestible and less cryptic than previous albums, and it sounds like the girls are genuinely trying to analyze why that may be. It’s obvious they think it’s an amazing album, there’s no hate here.

Andy Silva

While you were talking about Eldest Daughter, I was reminded of Mirrorball, more specifically the phrase "I can change everything about me to fit in," which contrasts sharply with "I've been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness. I've been dying just from trying to seem cool." In Mirrorball, it seemed like a talent, but in Eldest Daughter, she describes it as an effort. I also remembered how in "You're Losing Me" she says, "I'm getting tired, even for a phoenix," and I thought that perhaps she meant that this unique and terminal condition—this ability/will/obligation to mold oneself to what is expected of her—is something that is doomed to end, which is why it's terminal, because she feels she no longer needs to do it.

Kailey's Corner

But I do entirely agree that there is a possibility that her writing process with Jack is more open and she can communicate more intimate things with him rather than just focus on the sound so there could be something there in the way this album hits.

Samantha

I think the conversation around what the album reveals about Travis is interesting because I don’t feel like after listening to say reputation I ever really knew anything about Joe. I knew how he made Taylor feel, and her contrasting their relationship vs. her fame (which we get both of on this album with Travis I feel) but I didn’t know anything about him. I think a lot of what we feel like we know is more retrospective once she had written multiple albums when they were together and even after they broke up. And especially given how much more we already know about Travis because of how open he is could be diluting the things she is telling us about him? Idk if that makes sense

Deb

It is a lighthearted bop album BUT with a great deal of depth to the lyrics if one chooses to analyze them. What I have learned (unfortunately) is that so many of the Swifties seem to be "vipers dressed in empaths clothing" wanting her to "spell out the misery in detail" as Bonny referenced. Apparently so she can pick over the carcass of life failures while pretending to sympathize with her? The concise statements Taylor uses to invoke imagery in this album along with the music composition are actually demanding more from the listener to unravel the feelings, satire and emotions than on many previous albums. Three years from now, folks will listen to this album and decide it is her most complex. Just like they did with Rep.

Rachel B

One of my favorite lyrics in TFOO: ā€œI pledged my loyalty to me, myself, and I right before you lite my skyā€ and Wood ā€œpenny’s unlucky, I took him back, stepped on a crack and the black cat laughedā€ and from Honey: ā€œredefine all of those bluesā€

Deb

Emma

Oh you made me think of this now: you know the saying ā€when life gives you lemons make lemonadeā€, she’s kinda saying with opalite ā€when life gives you thunderstorms make a beatā€.🤭🤭

DeeAnne Herron

The lyric from Honey "Sweetie, it's yours, kicking in door...buy the paint in the color of your eyes" is probably what Travis said to Taylor when he bought his/their house. Surly they remodeled "kicking in doors" so the kitchen was perfect. This leads me to believe that he was talking about buying paint in the color of HER eyes.

Deb

As Taylor said, her album is a mirror for the listener. What I have learned (unfortunately) is that so many people seem to be "vipers dressed in empaths clothing" wanting her to "spell out the misery in detail" as Bonny referenced. Apparently so they can pick over the carcass of life failures while pretending to support and sympathize with Taylor?

Amanda Christon

That’s so true, I think the cleverness and joking nature is being overlooked severely

Lady Lauren

I would love to hear thoughts on why you guys think she chose to put Ruin the Friendship on this album, it doesn't fit the Showgirl theme at all to me but I love the song! I feel like it belongs on Midnights or somethingšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Lady Lauren

Maybe it's because if she had ruined the friendship, she may not have become a showgirl? idk

Syl

My fave lyrics in actually romantic is stop talking dirty to me-so unexpected and hilarious

Ms Lib

I find it interesting that there are a few song titles are peppered in lyrics of other song - ā€œElder daughterā€ in Elizabeth Taylor - ā€œCancelledā€ in father figure - ā€œWoodā€ in ruin the friendship

Mackenzie

I was JUST the other day monologuing for no less than 15 minutes to my mom about how insane ā€œmistake my kindness for weakness and find your card cancelledā€ is one of the most insanely incredible BADASS things she’s ever written.

Mayra

In Wish List, have the whole block looking like you. Because this is Taylor code for l’d like to end up being able to buy that home right next to Jason. All the kids that we joke look like Travis and her kids, the whole block looking like you!

elodie

The post chorus/outro in cancelled is incredible and one of my favourite parts on the album: Can’t you see my infamy loves company/Have they broken you like they’ve broken me/But a shattered glass is a lot more sharp/And now you know exactly who you’re friends are/We’re the ones with matching scars I’m obsessed with the songs where she goes OH AND ONE MORE THING

Jennifer Kingsley

Would LOVE this type of video for other albums ā˜ŗļø

Julia DiBernardo

I totally agree with u. I think fans aren’t considering the fact that Taylor and Travis weren’t even together for a year yet when she wrote showgirl. Trying to say we don’t know enough about Travis and their relationship off of one album in comparison to her relationship with Joe which spanned multiple years and albums is pointless to me. There is tons of depth and understanding of Taylor and Travis’ relationship that this album provides that I think is being overlooked because it’s not being said in poetic ā€œenoughā€ language šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Linds K

Emily mentioned my favorite lyric already from Cancelled!, but I like the full line: ā€œnow they’ve broken you like they’ve broken me, but a shattered glass is a lot more sharpā€, I just love how she takes that broken concept and carries it out in this way. You may be broken, but broken pieces are actually sharper so it’s a good thing. Like, what? 🤯

Jeebs

I love "you caught me off my guard" from W$SH L$ST

Andree

Missed you guys!!!! So glad to see a new video posted today

Kb8248

Perfectly said! I honestly think Taylor put out this album as a palette cleanser from TTPD. She wanted to update fans on where her life was post heartbreak. It wasn’t meant to explore their relationship or her introspection on love. She wanted to make a fun album while on tour to stave off burn out and boredom. That’s ok! My sense in general is that she’s gonna be protective of their relationship because they’re already so public facing.

Mia Gregorio

i don’t get the whole ā€œnot too deepā€ , ttpd was ā€œtoo specificā€.. people always complain about something, she knows what she is doing, and we know that she knows what she is doing yet people still complain.. i love the album, i think it’s incredible how she can go from one thing to another completely different, there’s so much good lyrics, from father figure which has incredible storytelling and lyrics, to something as funny as actually romantic ( people underestimate how hard it is to write something as witty and funny like this)

Ava Demassio

love the convo you are having at the beginning of the video and I completely agree. yes, it is not as deep and vulnerable as her past work - does that make it bad? no! does it make it my favorite TS album, unfortunately, no. and that's okay!

Molly

I agree, I wasn't trying to say there isn't depth to the lyrics, just that the focus isn't poetry! (Sleepless in the onyx night, but now the sky is opalite is incredible and deep!) There IS a lot to unravel; one of the things that makes this album so fun is how it's a treasure hunt of pop culture/ industry references! Right now I'm finding all the "tricks of the trade." She uses that phrase as a lyric, but I think it also relates to production choices, like the "love love love LOVE don't you sweat it baby!" section in Opalite, or the orchestra section before the bridge of father figure, or three stressed syllables at the end of lines (eg light-ning strikes, ope-a-lite).

Leney

ā€œThey want to see you rise, they don’t want you to reignā€ I feel like is the thesis of her career.

Christine Violet

I think the ā€œlack of depthā€ on this album, for lack of a better term, is a direct reflection of their collaboration method together. She’s mentioned many times that they write in a more stream of consciousness way, and I think that kind of process inherently is going to have less depth lyrically, because you are working in the moment, focusing more on vibes and melodies. A lot of the songs she writes with Jack and Aaron are her writing to track, which means she is almost completely focusing on lyrics, or she writes the song entirely by herself and goes to one of them to help with production. Yes obviously she also writes in the moment a lot with Jack, but I think he is generally a deeper guy and they know each other so well and they bring out parts of each other that no one else can bring out. Max and Shellback are almost exclusively pop writers, they are always more focused on hooks and melodies, and we saw in the memos how they focus a lot more on the overall sound. I just think that writing in the moment with them brings out a completely different side of Taylor, not necessarily better or worse than what Aaron and Jack bring out of her. Anyways, love you girlies and always get excited when a notification for a new video pops up!! ā™„ļøā™„ļø

Jana Fuller

I’ve missed you a ridiculous amount you had me spoiled lol

Jana Fuller

I think Bonnie’s shirt is my favorite of the merch

Kayla

One thing I was thinking about as I was listening to her talk about this album in all of the interviews she did is how she kept talking about this album as writing as a character. I wonder if that has something to do with the album lacking some more depth. I would imagine writing intentionally as a character obviously she's still pulling in things from her life but I would imagine she is thinking about it from a much more detached place than her earlier albums where it was much more diaristic. I did have the thought about this album that it feels so much more generalized than how she usually writes. I feel like she's been known by her fans to be so specific in her writing and that's one of the things we love about her. To me, this album doesn't really have any of that specificity which to me contributes to it feeling a little more surface level.

Amanda P

my fave part of Opalite is that in the 1st chorus, she says ā€œnever MADE no one like you beforeā€ bc it’s her mom talking to her & 2nd chorus she switches to ā€œnever MET no one like you beforeā€ bc it’s her talking to Travis 🄹 it’s such a sweet parallel of the two of them! ALSO ā€œI thought my house was haunted, I used to live with ghostsā€ connecting to all her past ghost metaphors???! that is offensive!!! Opalite has some sneaky poetic lyrics!

Sebastian

🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠🟠 ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ I actually want to share this because I think it deserves a shout-out. I completely agree that Eldest Daughter is the heart of the album — but there’s a specific lyric that feels like the heart of the song, the heart of the album, and honestly, the heart of Taylor’s story. That lyric captures the absolute importance of writing: ā€œI thought that I’d never find that.ā€ She didn’t write ā€œI never thought that I’d find that.ā€ That would have implied surprise — as if finding love was an unexpected twist. Instead, she wrote ā€œI thought that I’d never find thatā€ — an intentional, conscious thought, a moment of admitting to herself the possibility of being alone forever. And yet, it wasn’t that. It’s such a powerful example of how a single line, and the act of writing itself, can hold the weight of an entire story — of love, loneliness, and self-awareness. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

OurSong13

Dancing through the lightning strikes also connects to shake it off "I'm lightning on my feet" "End of a cigarette" also could be taken as she's been all used up after a show but is still glowing- flushed from the physical activity of dancing and singing on stage. "packed" works well for pack of cigarettes too

Amanda P

I 100% agree about her collaborators! the Karls (🤪) are great musical collaborators but what’s missing is Jack or Aaron being the lyrical sounding board for her (imo)! but also I’m sure there are some great songs in the vault but bc she stuck to the 12, there isn’t as much room for nuance - we have gotten used to at least 15 songs which does make a difference!

Lefty

Alright I guess these are my favs off the top of my head (in track order): 1."But love was a cold bed full of scorpions, Ophelia lived in fantasy"; great poetic line in Ophelia, love the way it sounds 2."What could you possibly get for the girl who has everything and nothing all at once"; most of the second verse cooks tbh, love the flow. 3. "You finally left the table, and what a simple thought, you're starving till you're not"; maybe my favourite metaphor on the album, great imagery here. 4. "They want to see you rise, they don't want you to reign"; one of the more cutting lyrics about the industry, paints a bleak picture. 5. "Every youngest child felt like they were raised up in the wild"; I'm gonna pick that one, because that one's for me. Youngest child here. 6. "Glistening grass from September rain, grey overpass full of neon names"; peak Taylor storytelling is back and better than ever. 7. "How many times has your boyfriend said, "why are we always talking about her?"; I mean...ouch. What else can you say, lmfao. 8. "We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do"; I'm not big on swearing in music, but this is purposeful in just the right way. Simple but effective lyric. 9. Uh...actually I can't take Wood even remotely seriously, Idgaf about this song. 10. "Can't you see my infamy loves company? Now they've broken you like they've broken me, but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp"; I like that "sharp" can refer to not just more dangerous, but also smarter. I think Cancelled has a lot more really good lyrics than people give it credit for. It's become almost politically correct to make this song the target of all criticism from this album. 11. "You can call me anything you want, anything you want you want"...HAH, just kidding, I'm going with "buy paint in the colour of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life, actually quite sweet and beautiful. 12. "I took her pearls of wisdom, hung them from my neck"; pretty brilliant way of combining a phrase with physical imagery.

Amanda P

ā€œyou want a fight you found it, I got the place surroundedā€ always gives me chills bc it reminds me of when she said that our support for Taylor’s versions & the Eras tour is what helped her get her masters back 🄹 as she said in the pod, ā€œwe ride at dawnā€ so don’t mess with the swifties 🤪 ALSO ā€œthey want to see you rise, they don’t want you to reignā€ is sooo good

Mike

i agree.

Emily D

absolutely dumbfounded, that the color for eldest daughter wasn’t lilac!! šŸ’œit’s literally mentioned in the bridge but I guess speak your truth ha ha

Alaina

Please continue to take care of yourselves šŸ‘

skizzo

I think it was Taylor's personal choice to not reveal too much and not got too deep. For example there are plenty of deep lyrics in Ariana's songs with Max Martin on We Cant Be Friends and Twilight Zone

Lauren

I think for a long time she was writing around the relationship or focusing on start (when she was in a horrible place), which made it really interesting as a listener because the stakes were high, and everything felt so life or death when she met him and it stayed that way for a while. In 2023 she was in a bad place, but it seemed like she was able to really move past it by the time mid October came around.

Jessie

"I protect the family" 100% and "my advice is always ruin the friendship" HITS me every single time!

Emma

Hey so isn't is Daisy's bare naked not Daisies bare naked (look up the lyrics) - I love that you picked this Emily šŸ˜‚ so many double entendres I love the song hahaha

Almq

In my head, ā€œDo you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veinsā€ is the equivalent of two lyrics from WAOLOM: 1. Is it a wonder I broke let’s hear one more joke 2. They wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me To mean: 1. to me the line is like: my blood has become so cold and numb to all of the jokes people make at my expense, that now I don’t care if you want to make more jokes for profit (skate on it) 2. Or she could mean it like: do you think you have a chance in surviving the life I’ve survived thus far, I dare you to walk in my shoes

Laura Kirby

When listening to this album I almost ALWAYS listen to it in its entirety. Like it's one whole story. All the different chapters. I never crave to listen to one song individually, which is why I fear none of the songs on this album are top 30 worthy for me. In saying that, I think my favorite lyric on this album is "you finally left the table and what a simple thought you're starving till you're not" I think that is my biggest take away of the whole album, you don't like something about your life? CHANGE IT. Taylor always gives the best advice. Also, so funny how I pretty much disagreed on almost all the color choices! LOVED this video btw!

Lauren

Clean was written about Jake! She wrote it in February of 2014 in London, so while I get the sentiment, I’m not sure this is the best example.

Katie LaFave

you are the first person I’ve ever seen say that clean is about Jake! I’ve always assumed and I think Bonny Em have always assumed that it’s about Harry

Nicole

These are all flawless picks! I'm adding mine in a reply so my giant comment doesn't flood the thread xD

Lauren

I think Jack brings out a different and more melancholic side to her because he doesn’t encourage a song structure. Example: eldest daughter would’ve turned into something more sinister (which was not her intention) if she would’ve been allowed to extrapolate more. The point of that song is to choose cringey honesty.

Nicole

Ophelia: "Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibe." It just hits sonically and for being with the person you want to spend your life with Elizabeth: "You're only as hot as your last hit, baby." Relatable to the masses in terms of how we perform our lives on social media. People you don't keep up with only keep you in their mind when they see you have a big moment on instagram Opalite: "Thunder like a drum, this life will beat you up up up up." Bounciness like the drum bouncing back after being struck, its dancing like the protag through the lightning strikes...I don't know I can't explain the way this makes me feel. Father: "They wanna see you rise, they don't want you to reign." (But honestly this whole song is just unbeatable) Eldest: "Every youngest child felt they were raised up in the wild but now you're home." I'm the baby so I'm biased, but also I feel like this line makes the whole song make sense. It ties together how she feels as her own self (the eldest daughter familially but also for Swifties) to how she feels with this man. Friendship: "And it was not an invitation" Maybe a cop-out pick but its the core of the song to me. Nobody is waiving flags or shining green lights on you in your life to help you decide what is the right decision. You're not getting an invitation, you just gotta do what's right. Romantic: "No man has ever loved me like you do." Love it because its so applicable to all the haters (including other men). Fav for the meaning as opposed to for the jokes which would be "How many times has your boyfriend said 'Why are we always talking bout her?'" Wishlist: "We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do....wow!" Her simple wonder at having such a basic wish and the idea it could happen. Her sarcasm in the "and they do!?!? wow" is *chef's kiss* Wood: "All of that bitchin', wishing on a falling star never did me any good." Something I need to live more in my real life, and makes all of the sense in the fates and stars we've seen in every album lately. Cancelled: "I salute you if you're much too much to handle" It's relatable to anyone, famous or not, truly cancelled or just hated/misunderstood/bullied/outcast. Honey: "Buy the paint in the color of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life, honey". The delivery of the line is a big reason, but also its just so damn cute to be like "I like looking into your eyes so much paint the world in it so I can look at it but you can also be the only one who sees me. Showgirl: "They ripped me off like false lashes and threw me away" As a former dancer, this one makes so much sense to me. I also love the skate on the ice veins but the lashes indicate the frailty but also the false-front that is inherent to a showgirl/performer

Aloha Record Sargent

One could argue that it's actually more difficult to write in this style. It's more challenging to write concise, catchy lyrics that still convey SO much meaning. To self-edit that much. As compared to say, TTPD, where Taylor has said she just let it all come out, raw and unedited, like a data dump. And I'm honestly glad she didn't refer to Matty and Joe too much on this album. They've had enough attention already, and she is in such a different place now. Leave it all behind.

Aloha Record Sargent

And as usual, she just makes it look too easy! But it's really not. I will go to my grave defending the songwriting on this album -- and songwriting is both lyrics and melody!

schicken

i do agree with the fact it may be more stripped back emotionally due to it being with max and shellback, but i fear we are in for the most insane TS13 with max shellback jack and aaron. we’ll have the bops of 1989, rep and showgirl while also having the lyrics and emotion of folklore, evermore and TTPD. my favorite lyrics from TLOAS are: "you wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine, pulling me into the fire" "i would trade the cartier for someone to trust, just kidding" "you had to make your own sunshine, but now the sky is opalite" "you made a deal with this devil, turns out my dick's bigger" "the last time i laughed this hard was on the trampoline in somebody's backyard" "your smile, miles wide" "you've just given me so much ATTENTION" "we tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do" "seems to be that you and me we make our own luck" "i salute you if you're much too much to handle" "honey, i'm home, we can play house, we can bed down, pick me up, who's the baddest in the land, what's the plan?" "do you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?"

Nick Salgado

thank goodness youre back i almost died

Yes, favorite lyric for every album, plleeasse! Mine fav lyric is, "Said 'They want to see you rise. They don't want you to reign.'" 🄃

Isabel Victoria

I really think it coming after TTPD is the reason this album feels so different. It’s such a 180 from that whole vibe.

Kelsie Massocco

I think it's so wonderful how everyone has such different favorites!! Love the format of this video and would love to see it for other albums eventually. FOO - "Only you possess the key, no longer drowning & deceived" makes me think of my husband immediately ET - "In the papers, on the screens and in their minds" shows how LOUD she is about her feelings in this relationship, which she has been in press including the podcast Opalite - "But my momma told me it's alright" sometimes thats all you gotta hear, or wish you could hear especially as someone who lost their mother at a young age FF - "This empire belongs to me" chills everytime ED - "Never gonna leave you out, never gonna break that vow" I think this one works so beautifully no matter if you're thinking of it in a relationship setting (marriage), siblings setting or even for your very best friends RTF - "It's not convenient, no" Love the message of take the risk it will be worth it even if its hard! AR - "I mind my business, God's my witness" Funny & ironic given the rest of the song but also just like the rhyme WL - "I just want you, have a couple kids" Rings very true as a married lady who has been trying to get pregnant for a couple years! Wood - "His love was the key" This is obviously part of a cheeky line but I think has multiple beautiful meanings beyond the sexual. Also relatable as a married woman thinking of my husband and his love unlocking a lot of goods things in my life šŸ˜‰ CANCELLED - "Beware the wrath of masked crusaders" Good reminder that often the ones being loud shouldn't even be listened to, they're hiding behind masks on the internet just stirring shit for no reason Honey - "But you touched my face, redefined all of those blues" so many connections to old songs here, also just relatable with how you feel when you finally have the right person and the past feels so... truly behind you in a beautiful way TLOASG - "But I'm immortal now, babydolls, I couldn't if I tried" Love to see her own it!! She has so obviously made it and I think this is not only a beautiful ending to this album but I can't wait to reflect back on it and how it ties into future works.

Dina Posner

you might just be in the process of figuring out how this album feels different, which is of course a natural reaction! But I saw someone else say this album is not cryptic, and that is exactly it. For me, I just have to sort of subvert my expectations. We are all so used to cryptic Taylor, myself included. But when I turn this on its head, I’m like woah!, her being so direct/silly/flirty is actually the deepest thing she could have done - it’s almost a protest against her past sadness and anxiety. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote, ā€œthe simplest pleasures are sometimes the most extraordinaryā€ 🫶

Wesley Cole

Tremendous picks and discussion as always! I loved this album on first listen and have only grown to love it more since then, lyrically and sonically. There are undoubtedly some valid criticisms, but people saying this album "lacks depth" because they didn't get their fix of parasocial addiction to Taylor Swift shouldn't be one of them. She doesn't owe any of that and has been more than gracious with it in the past. So much so, chronically online swifties have become all kinds of insane about it. If I were her, seeing some of that shit, I'd close the door a bit on my personal life too. She also doesn't seem to have a novel's worth of complicated, layered emotions to sort through and try to compact into lines of songs recently. She got all that shit out in TTPD, "Closed and boarded up...nothing to settle once wounds have healed" -from the release ig post. I think the girls proved that there is depth throughout this album. It's just simplified, not overly complicated or swiftie mad libs-able. That's shaken some overly parasocial swifites to the core, unfortunately. Love them both, but Bonny essentially makes my point at 45:58

megsterg

So interesting how different the imagery that lyrics conjure in your mind can be! For the 'glowing like the end of a cigarette' lyric, without thinking too hard about it I've always pictured it being the fans faces that glow once she's visible/gives them attention with a smile or an autograph. Also, you're discussion about the impact of her writing this while on tour f'd me up!! It totally makes sense considering that at the point of writing this, her and Travis had only been together for like a year. They'd only known each other while she was touring, so they hadn't quite gotten to do as much "real life" dating yet. So for her, a lot of these thoughts and feelings were incredibly vulnerable. We knew they were engaged when we got the songs, but she couldn't have known how everything would turn out even if she hoped it. Plus her specific focus was to make a catchy ass album. So it does make complete sense why the album is what it is.

Bella

I love the transparency throughout this video, we’re really all fathoming the album together! I’ve also felt some distance from taylor with these songs being less raw or less vulnerable in contrast to some of the other albums. it makes me think of how during this album rollout we’ve gotten a lot more interviews from taylor, so in some ways it feels like we’re closer to her than ever, but the music itself lacks that depth. and I wonder if those are linked together... I think with albums that are so raw or revealing it can be a lot more uncomfortable to bask in the release because she might feel very exposed. and maybe that is a way to protect or preserve how special this relationship is for her. just some thoughts sparked by this lovely video… šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Deb

Well said. And correct.

Ally ā¤ļø

I think my fav lyrics on the whole album are the outro of Ruin the Friendship. Love her when she’s handing out advice… and if this album is about what was going on behind the scenes during the Eras Tour, then that outro connects to why she felt the need to shoot her shot with Matty. Questions answered, no regrets, now she knows… makes me tear up every time.

Aloha Record Sargent

I think she is telling us that she learned a lesson long ago and that’s why she is a hopeless romantic despite everything. It helps explains why she answered the question with Matty, and why she took a chance with Travis, even when she had sworn off love. Sometimes you take the chance and it doesn’t work out. But just maybe, you find your soul mate.

Kiki

I was going to comment something similar. She mentioned in one interview about how she's playing a bit of a character in this album, which I think comes through via this "emotional distance" people are feeling. And to me it makes sense. I don't know if she was ready to open up and invite people in again immediately after the extremely vulnerable emotional dump she did for TTPD right before, especially since it seemed like she was eager to get into the fun side of being on tour now since she does in fact love her job and now she was in a better place emotionally to enjoy it. But also still wanting to protect a new romance that was still developing. I don't think it's crazy to then think she would want to do a short fun boppy album where she creates a showgirl character to tell stories through and be funny and have fun ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

vanessa

swifties have gotten sooo used to being able to spend months to pick apart the ā€œloreā€ of the album, paternity test songs, and theorize who/want songs are about and their inability to feed their parasocialism and ā€œlore findingā€ with this album is what makes people view it as less than and it’s really weird honestly. I really thought you guys were above that. normally love your guys takes so this is actually super disappointing to hear you guys to call this surface level, not vulnerable, & that there’s a distance with her heart. She makes her heart, her intentions, and where her life is incredibly clear in this album. this album is depth without darkness filled with infectious melodies & it’s something swifties have honestly never gotten from her because she has never truly been 100% happy in her career and personal life at the same time, which is something she has said multiple times throughout promo for this album. Even in her long term relationship there was anxiety and dimming her light that was a shadow over their relationship that came through in her music. Right now is the first time she’s really truly at the top profesionally and personally she makes that clear in Elizabeth taylor .. ā€œbeen number 1, but I’ve never had 2.ā€ Things don’t need to be sad or have anxiety to be vulnerable or deep… no hate at all , & it seems like you guys are trying to reflect so maybe you guys should look inward as to why you don’t view it as deep & ask whether that comes from you also wanting to participate In this lore building/paternity testing but not being able to do that this album cycle

Lauren

The Fate of Ophelia - Royal Purple Elizabeth Taylor - Dark Red Opalite - Shiny Pale Blue Father Figure - Brown (like dark timber) Eldest Daughter - Light Pink (it gives me young girls bedroom wall) Ruin The Friendship - Dark Green (like the woods) Actually Romantic - Light Purple Wi$h Li$t - Yellow/Orange (think sunset in the backyard watching the kids playing in the sprinkler) Wood - Burnt Orange Cancelled - Shimmery Black Honey - Pink with yellow accents The Life of a Showgirl - Lipstick Red

Prerna Singh

If songs don't feed into parasocialism of it all, and dont give enough lore to make more videos - doesn't mean the songs lack depth. Songs are meant to be enjoyed while listening, not picked apart to make videos about the lore behind it. It's such a fun and happy album and because there is no hidden lore encrypted in it, people are critiquing it. When one is happy in a relationship, the songs reflect that happiness and playfulness. So critiquing it just because it doesn't have enough lore for one's videos is so unfair

Verush

Hey just wanted to jump in with a thought, maybe once she's back working with Jack and/or Aaron we'll get those raw lyrics again, it might just be different for her to open up to people she isn't as close with. But idk, maybe it's not related at all, just a thought, I do agree the album feels different in that way

Prerna Singh

Exactly, I, too, am disappointed with their comment.

Prerna Singh

Exactly, and why should the objective of the album be to let the world know more about her partner. It's a good album to listen to. Just leave it at that. People should respect her personal life and not crave details about it.

Rebecca

This was when she was still on the Eras Tour essentially still getting to know Travis. Imagine the songs later after the proposal and wedding? She knows him even more now and will by TS13. We will get those specifics I have no doubt

Kelly Vance

1. I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I. Right before you lit my sky up. 2. All the right guys promised they’d stay. Under bright lights they withered away. But you bloom. 3. This is just a temporary speed bump. But failure brings you freedom and I can bring you love. 4. Your thoughtless ambition sparked the ignition on foolish decisions which led to misguided visions. That to fulfill your dreams you had to get rid of me. 5. Pretty soon I learned cautious discretion. When your first crush crushes something kind. 6. And my advice is always answer the question, better that then to ask it all your life 7. And I know you think it comes off vicious, but it’s precious, adorable. 8. Got me dreamin’ bout a driveway with a basketball hoop. 9. Penny’s unlucky. I took him back, then stepped on a crack and the black cat laughed. 10. Can’t you see my infamy loves company? Now they’ve broken you like they’ve broken me. But a shattered glass is a lot more sharp. 11. And when anyone called me ā€œLovelyā€ they were finding ways not to praise me, but you say it like you’re in awe of me. 12. I took her pearls of wisdom, hung them from my neck. I paid my dues with every bruise, I knew what to expect.

vanessa

Thank you for this!!!

Josh

i think its unfair for everyone to be saying that saying this album lacks depth, is just because we want parasocial details about her life. No, deep and personal songwriting has been Taylor's whole thing her entire career. That is why she has been so successful, because her emotional lyrics connect with people. That doesn't mean only sad songs. Happy, in-love songs like ours and mine and lover have this depth. This album just doesn't really have any of that, which makes it sound and feel very "un-taylor swift".

vanessa

Oh 100% feel you! I LOVE showgirl and it’s deep and important when you look at it through the context of her entire discography which spans TAYLOR’s story. I too have found sooo many connections to her prior work & I could also write entire essays about all the parallels and callbacks she makes throughout this entire album not to build lore but how she uses these past songs/themes that show such evolution, growth, confidence, and security in herself and her relationship showcases a completely other side of her vulnerability. Like just on fate of ophelia alone, the connections to guilty as sin/fresh out the slammer/ the prophecy/ love story I just there’s so much to say & it’s sad to see them fall into the same wheelhouse as I feel like they’re my ā€œsafeā€ swiftie content creators unlike the incredibly misogynistic swiftologist, so it’s a bummer to see them repeat those same talking points šŸ˜•

Dori McDowell

I read a post saying something along lines of TLOAS haters are 'fans' and those who love TLOAS are 'Swifties'... I mean... šŸ¤šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‰

Kelsea's Comments

I think there are so many more layers to this album than people (including you guys) are realizing. You feel like you're done fathoming but you haven't actually begun for several of the songs. Also, it's a crazy short album from her, which is I think one of the biggest reasons it feels different and like you're "already done fathoming". There are only 12 songs and when you're taking them at face value and missing all the deep layers and what she's actually saying beneath the surface level facade she offers up as the showgirl, of course it's going to feel "easy".

I just want to add to the voice that singing about her peak joy during the Eras tour and relationship with Travis is incredibly vulnerable. Imagine going full chested… I’m in love and happy… and the response being ā€œthat’s not deepā€. Love is the deepest emotion!!!! Sorry not resonating with me that people think love and happiness are distant and non vulnerable. How sad for Taylor Swift at her most vulnerable happy emotions to be told she’s not being connected with her fans

Chloe Amelia

this concept for a video is PERFECT NEVER STOP PLSSSS when you have time to breathe make one for every album <33333

Hannah

Wow oh people do really take others opinions as personal digs huh. Guys, they didn’t say it’s a superficial album that completely lacks depth. They were actually, if you care to listen, having an interesting discussion about how on some albums Taylor keeps us a bit more at arms length with her writing. That is not the same thing as lacking depth. But it’s the same thing as saying that even when she writes bops with depth on 1989 they are not as vulnerable as on TTPD or midnights. 1989 i full of depth but she is keeping us at an arms length if you compare it to Red. It’s an insane skill to write bops like Blank Space with actual substance to them. But Opalite, eldest daughter or Ruin the friendship are not as vulnerable as even Down Bad or Guilty as Sin? and that okay! It doesn’t make them better or worse as songs.

Chloe Amelia

I don't think they meant it that way at all! For example, its the same way they discuss 1989, there isn't as much vulnerability present in that album (still a bunch but not as much as others) but that doesnt mean it isnt vulnerable! They literally spent an hour talking about all of their favorite lyrics, comparing them to her other albums, talking about their emotions to these lyrics. They clearly emotionally resonate with showgirl! We are allowed to have different opinions in the swiftie community and a couple sentences about this album potentially not being as emotional doesn't define these two girls, who literally spend their life talking about their love of taylor swift, one of their primary reasons being, her vulnerability! If anything they are constantly defending this album!

Chloe Amelia

but also your takes are valid! just wanted to share some thoughts!

Kiki

Also, I needed to come back and say: I LOVE this video idea lol. It's such a fun creative concept, I hope you two eventually do all the albums for this! Getting to hear your favorite lyrics for each song is so interesting. I love that šŸ˜‚

Sam

1- But love was a cold bed full of scorpions 2- Cry my eyes violet 3- I had a bad habit of missing lover past, my brother used to call it eating out of the trash. 4- You made a deal with this devil turns out my dicks bigger. 5- Every eldest daughter was the first lamb to the slaughter, so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire. 6- Wilted corsage dangles my wrist. 7- I heard you call me boring Barbie when the cokes got you brave. 8- They want those bright lights and Belenci shades. 9- Girls, I dont need to catch the bouquet to know a hard rock is on the way. 10- But they had already picked out your grave and hearse , beware the wrath of masked crusaders. 11 - Buy the paint in the colour of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life. 12- They ripped me off like false lashes and threw me away.

I love hearing Bonny and EMS thoughts and really appreciated them sharing the nuance of their thinking in a safe space, so disagree with your take. But that’s ok, in life we won’t all agree but it’s good to remember there is more we have in common that unites us than what separates us, like here we all love Taylor’s writing ā˜ŗļø

Ashley Wright

Loved your takes and thoughts girls, thank you for sharing with us 🧔🧔

Prerna Singh

First of all - none of the songs on TTPD or Midnights are as boppy as the ones on showgirl. Her focus here was melody and vibes and creating anthems. And if the definition of depth is based on how much more personal details she is sharing or how much she is talking about Matty healy, then I don't agree that it's a valid take. I am glad she didn't mention or compare with anyone on songs like Wishlist or Honey because that is what makes them more relatable because it's not just about her own personal experiences/exes.

E ✨🩷

I do wonder to what extent we're just not confused about this album? TTPD was a shock to everyone, Midnights was very cryptic and confusing, Folklore & Evermore were sold to us as 'fictional' but now we know what we know it makes them even more interesting (and to an extent, cryptic) than before. Whereas TLOAS is just 'here I am!!' and there's nothing to decode really. I personally find that the songs I love I'm still listening to a lot, but the ones I don't I'm skipping and not making much time for them. Which is true for me of any Taylor Swift album but usually I only have 2 or 3 skips but TLOAS there's 4, sometimes 5 songs that I'd skip, on a 12 track album. And that's ok!! Maybe one day those ones will click more, but it doesn't make you any less of a Swiftie to have preferences on songs, albums, eras, etc. ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

From the moment trav said ā€œit’s the colour of your eyes, honeyā€ on new heights, I knew something was up. Of COURSE he refs the absolute superiority of honey šŸŽØšŸÆšŸ˜

Taylah Louise

Number 9 lyric has a special place in my heart as it reminds me of being at a wedding before I was engaged to my hubby and refusing to go join the bouquet toss because I was ā€œconfidentā€ and he said ā€œyou should beā€ šŸ˜‡ it’s funny how I’ve never met her but yet she manages to keep writing about my life 🤭

Alberto

The one I’ve not stopped thinking about was ā€œshe was IN her phoneā€ instead of ā€œON her phoneā€ in Opalite. I think it resembles a way more intense way of saying that the previous gf was addicted to showing off or maybe just like wasn’t present in the relationship in real life but on social media she was. So deep and so unobvious

Kristiina K

1. You wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a wine 2. you’re only as hot as your last hit, baby 3. life is a song, it ends when it ends / but failure brings you freedom 4. they wanna see you raise, they dont want you to reign / mistake my kindness for weakness 5. pretty soon, I learned cautious discretion 6. and my advice is always answer the question better that than ask it all your life 7. stop talking dirty to me 8. please, God, bring me a best friend who I think is hot 9. and the black cat laughed 10. but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp 11. and you stay until the morning 12. the more you play, the more that you pay / but I’m immortal now, baby dolls I couldn’t if I tried / I’m married to the hustle

Vakhania Ilia

in father figure the cancelled part is also so offensive cause in seconde verse she says pay the check before mahogany grain but now after he got rid of her his card is cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!!

K

Showgirl compared to Tyalor's other albums is not deep and that is ok. But I have finally admitted to myself that because of that it is my least favourite Taylor album and that is ok, I still listen to it of course and absolutely love some of the songs for reasons other than their depth. I think "Ruin the Friendship" out of all the songs could have become very deep but also in this song there is a distance between what she writes and her true feelings. I have seen people interpreting it like "oh, her message is make out with people even if they have a partner, because they might die", but oviously she is feeling conflicted because maybe she thinks being with her romantically might have changed her friend's mental health and actions. But for people that do not know her well, this might not become clear because that is not what she sings.

Deb

Remember, Taylor said the album is a mirror that reflects back self-images to the listener. In other words, coming to the realization that you mostly connect to Taylor music because of the "tea" about her ruined romances shared in gory detail, should make you consider a deep dive into your own life. That is NOT about liking "depth" or "lyricism" or "song writing style" that is being a "viper dressed in empaths clothing".

Eirini

About father figure: the lyric that Emily picked was always from Scot’s perspective to me… that’s like the last thing he said to her and then she goes no bitch I was your father figure, we drank the brown liquor together! Favourite lyric is definitely this empire belongs to me… it hits so hard after going through the journey of the song! Also love I can make deals with the devil because my dick’s bigger tbh

Chanelle

I think fathoming has been easier this time as well bc of all of the things taylor has already told us in all of the interviews, voice memos etc 🄰

InƩs FernƔndez A.

Very well said, I think this album has layers and the girls just haven’t fathomed all of them yet. I think they will, with time.

Sarah (not in her sunday best)

ā€œI have been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness, I’ve been dying just from trying to seem coolā€ —-> I cannot get over this lyric. This is the reason so many people love Taylor and find her so relatable. Haters who think she is just a silly girl talking about boys and getting drunk on her own tears are JUST NOT GETTING IT!!!

Mis

There's no baggage in this album. It's a fresh start.

Gustav Lucas

The album completely disappeared from my listening cycle after two weeks of hard core binging, and it makes me sad :( It makes me want to have a different approach to how I receive a new TS album, I need the effect of novelty to last much longer than this (although in the case of TLOAS, it’s definitely a combination of the length of it with the fact that it’s not that deep) It’s not necessarily a bad thing to have an easy-listening album once in a while, but it did lead me to move on to other things much faster

Deb

I think a few things about your post. I even went back and relistened to you just to make sure I heard correctly. 1) First, you are giving JACK credit for adding the 'emotional depth' to Taylor's songs? That is the most misogynist's thing I have heard you say. I think that kind of critique was why she chose to write solo on her Speak Now album. If you really believe that you should re-evaluate your career choice. 2) I laugh at you for saying how she gave you so much information about x and the Show Girl songs don't really give you the detail or help you get to know Travis. Her writing was really so vague on prior albums that you simply projected whatever you wanted into them (your fathomings didn't detect that Midnights was a break up album, Lover was really all denial, Folkmore songs were about Joe or Matty etc. and Joe's "writing credits" were words from their arguments?) realizing later that you had really just made up a bunch of stuff to fit a narrative that wasn't real. Look back over your fathomings/ re-fathoming's for all the details about what you "connected with" but really got wrong/missed and realize you were just surfing for 'tea' rather than doing lyric analysis). 3) If you think you have "fathomed" everything about these songs with a couple weeks listen, and this is your analysis, then my opinion is you don't understand the message and satire and just want the surface "tea".

Deb

Giving Jack or Aaron credit for Taylor's song success is the most misogynist thing I have read. TTPD was criticized by many for having too much Jack. "Work with a different producer" was the lead on a many TTPD review. If you want Jack music, listen to his band's albums. Taylor's music is hers and she is the creative producer. Giving a man credit for her songs is wrong.

Antonia

I am also feeling like I have fathomed the album already and have not found myself listening to it non-stop like I typically do with her albums. I was expecting this album to have less depth and I think it’s completely intentional. I think Taylor wants to keep the world more at arm’s length regarding her relationship and protect her privacy.

Lynn D'eer

Yes, I wanted to comment the same. There is no guessing šŸ˜…. She doesn’t need to be cryptic or use a fictional character to express her actual feelings I think. In that sense I find it quite honest and refreshing and real ā¤ļø

Katie Regan

1. But love was a cold bed full of scorpions The venom stole her sanity 2. All my white diamonds and lovers are forever don’t you ever end up anything but mine 3. You were dancing through the lightning strikes 4. You’ll be swimming with the fishes before you know you’re drowning

Karen

PLEASE give us your fav lyrics from every song on every album 🫶 I know we would all love that so much šŸ˜€

kayleeā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

not gonna lie im still fathoming this album!! more than i am ttpd, midnights, etc. for some reason, i have a new favourite every day. disregarding the lack of depth to the album, i feel like it's more the catchy tunes and offensive melodies that keep bringing me back hahahah

Sam

I just think this album is such a breath of fresh air! Like much needed

Micra

I totally agree. I love this album but I already went back to my Spotify playlist with my favorite of all time and with previous albums that would happen way way later. It's great but something's not quite clicking. You said this in another video. This is made for the masses while TTPD was for us fans. And it's easy to tell.

Megan C

I wonder if the lack of emotional depth piece is also related to the whole showgirl concept. We can guess but probably don't know about the souls or showgirls.

SarahM✨🌷

Had to comment just to compliment the curly hair you guys have going on in this video🤩 just looks super effortless and cute!

Hannah

Hi Prerna, I’m sorry to be blunt but did you read my comment at all? My definition of depth is nothing of what you are saying and I think my comment makes that quite clear. Those assumptions are your own and have nothing to do with my thoughts or what I said. I also believe my comment makes it very clear that I am not saying that the songs on Showgirl lacks depth, I am arguing for the contrary. There is a way of writing deep songs in different ways and it is a skill that Taylor can do so on both albums like showgirl and 1989 as well as Midgnights, Folklore and TTPD. Please don’t argue by putting your words in my mouth :)

Juliette B

I don’t like this energy

Lauren

I fear you are not familiar with their lore. Deadass in their breakup article it said they were on/off but people assumed they’d get back together. This doesn’t even account for all the music (specifically midnights) about their relationship.

Rhonda

Dude…I know they were emotionally on and off and I’m a 17 year fan and know all of the lore. It’s about Matty!

Tƶff

I loved thinking about which song I would give which colour! So here are mine: - Fate of Ophelia: Dark Blue - Elizabeth Taylor: Dark Violet - Opalite: Opalite (duh) - Father Figure: Dark Brown - Eldest Daughter: Light Green - Ruin the Friendship: Light Yellow - Actually Romantic: Dark Red - Wish List: Light Orange - Wood: Light Brown - Cancelled: Dark Grey - Honey: Dark Yellow - Life of a Showgirl: Burned Orange

Louisa HunskjƦr

If you actually listened to what they said they did not credit jack for her songwriting they talked about the fact that Taylor is naturally more vulnerable with jack and therefore bring out the more vulnerable lyrics from her while also having the big poppy production, whereas that wasn’t her focus either Max and shellback - the focus was clearly the melodies while having broader more relatable lyrics and if you listen to the sound clips of them writing the songs you will hear that in a lot of cases lyrics were created from what sounds needed to be there and of course it was Taylor herself who came up with it so it was intentionally made that way and they are in no way critiquing her for that but commenting on all of this in a pretty objective way because it is not that deep it is not supposed to be - it’s a fun loving happy vibe which she has said multiple times

Sam

My infamy loves company!!! This album is actually so poetic

intandem

I think I disagree for the first time with y’all 😭 in regards to your initial comments on the album at the beginning of this video. I feel like this is her most honest album because she has said multiple times that she is in the same place currently. She also has been vulnerable and open during the interviews she’s been giving when mentioning her relationship. I am actually shocked that she is so open with how happy she is….shes confident and assured in her happiness. In her previous relationships she was always more timid about shouting how in love she was.

Under_The_Stars

I literally burs into tears we she said : 'Cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life ' I am so happy for her, at the same time I see myself in those lyrics :')

I really think you are misunderstanding what they are saying. At least in the first point. If you’ve heard them speak before you’d feel that that seems out of character. What they’ve continuously said is that because she and jack are best friends it might allow her to be her most vulnerable self with him, and therefore bring out the depth. Not that he is the one that brings the depth. To attack them for that just seems mean to me. There might be some truth to point 2 and 3 but I don’t think you are interpreting them kindly and you’re critique could be expressed in a nicer way than whatever this is.

Emelie

That lyric gets me every time too! It’s giving the prophecy. Plus her really giving up on live after Matty šŸ’”

Sarah | šŸ“Œ Hobart, AU

In Father Figure the line "mistake my kindness for weakness" is a clever way of saying I'm both kind and strong, and I know the difference. It's so self-aware. Love it.

Sarah | šŸ“Œ Hobart, AU

I like the line in Actually Romantic: "hadn't thought of you in a long time, but you keep sending me funny valentines". It's saying I forgot that you existed, without being overly mean. And the call back to the very famous song 'My funny valentine' is clever!

Emelie

My fav father figure lyric: you want a fight? You found it. I got the place surrounded. Goosebumps every time! Swifties always got Taylor’s back 🄰

Eve

This is a really nasty comment and super uncalled for in this space! The girls were simply saying that when Taylor is with Jack she can be a lot more vulnerable because they are so close. I think your comment highlights that you don’t understand Bonny & Emily well, haven’t watched a lot of their videos or just don’t get them. They are the complete opposite to everything you are saying. If you don’t like their videos then that’s okay, but maybe take yourself out of this community if it’s not for you rather than commenting something that is incredibly offensive and untrue.

Kayla Knutson

The lyric ā€œ a shattered glass is a lot more sharpā€ also gives me the imagery from the front cover of the album. It relates to the showgirl theme because glass is going to give that mirror imagery of someone and their life being reflected on everyone else, but also the glass being shattered is a look at how her life is not perfect and never has been.

Eve

I totally agree!! With her previous albums it was the only music I listened to for at least 6 months and remained the main source of my music for at least a year! With this album I have started listening to other music after the first few weeks!

Holly

PLS do it with every album and then pick your favorite lyric from every album and then maybe even have an overall #1 fav like a bracket

Maria McElroy

Would love you guys to do your least favourite lyric from each song too šŸ‘€šŸ™ˆ ps both your hairs look completely superior today!!!

Kayla Knutson

I love the idea of going back and sharing your favorite lyric from every song not every album! I know that is maybe a lot to ask, but I found this video particularly interesting because Taylor’s lyricism is the thing that connected me to her music first more than anything else. I love to hear how words can be strung together in such beautiful and poetic and imaginative ways, and I especially love hearing such smart chickens break them down!

ton

Yep

Milena Baeza

I see the same colors as Bonny for each song, loved that you shared these with us, girls <3

Amy Versprille

I think she is a bit more distant in this album for a few reasons - she knows this is her forever person - she has time to introduce and discuss their love - he will be the one she loves and sings about (if all goes well) for the rest of her life and career. So starting us off with an fun light album as they have just begun this love is good. Their love in this album is still new - strong and I think they both knew it - but it is new. At the beginning it is all about the vibes of a person and if they match your vibes. So she can get deeper later when she explores getting engaged, getting married, and her thoughts. Also a light vibe album before the 13th!!!! Is perfect. She will be lyrically back. Her 13th album will be special and I think she will take her time with it since it is the 13th!!!

Anyana

No I’m so sorry Bonny broke my brain with the begin again lyric parallel 😭😭

Savanna

coming back to this I do think a large part of the album was taylor putting her fans at arms length again, which you guys covered in this. She's intentionally protecting this relationship more so than I think even the joe songs did. With Joe she had the ability to reveal very specific moments and descriptive scenes between them in songs off of rep BECAUSE nobody knew anything about that relationship. Now, I think because the public does see a glimpse of tayvis, she's not painting a full portrait of their love and very personal moments on this album because she wants that stuff to be kept to just them. And from moments on this album you understand that she KNOWS she’s getting married to him and HOPES to have children with him, so the idea of revealing certain VERY personal moments of their life behind closed doors i’m sure is something that was well thought out in the making of this music. I do think that decision played a role into the lyrical depth and storytelling explored in this album. And may be a symptom of why many people didn't enjoy its content. And may have found it surface level.

Savanna

as she said in one do the MANY interviews after tloas dropped ā€œ"I gotta figure out like ways to make sure that I do have things that are just between us and that moment (the engagement) in particular is one that is always just gonna be ours". She knows there’s this life that does need to be protected and kept away from the public. She shares so much of herself, and I do think she’s trying to be more intentional in what she chooses to share and what is kept ONLY within the walls of their home and their minds

DemiMariešŸ¤šŸ–¤

Fav Lyrics: 1- "And if you'd never come for me, I might've lingered in purgatory" 2-"All the right guys promised they stay, under bright lights they withered away, But you bloom" 3-"I thought my house was haunted, I used to live with ghosts" 4- "You're thoughtless ambition sparked the ignition, On foolish decisions, which led to misguided visions" 5- " 'Cause I thought that I'd never find that Beautiful, beautiful life that Shimmers that innocent light back, like when we were young" 6- "And my advice is always answer the question Better that than to ask it all your life" 7- "I really gotta hand it to you, ooh No man has ever loved me like you do" 8- "I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not You caught me off my guard I hope I get what I want 'Cause I know what I want" 9- "Daisy's bare naked, I was distraught He loves me not He loves me not" 10- "But they'd already picked out your grave and hearse Beware the wrath of masked crusaders" 11- "But you touched my face, redefined all of my blues, when you say... "honey" " 12- "Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace Sequins are forever And now I know the life of a showgirl, babe Wouldn't have it any other way"

Jenny

That’s interesting - do you think other albums are less honest? Taking ttpd as an example, I believe that is an extremely honest piece of work and that doesn’t change because she wasn’t in that place when she released it. Because she was in that place when she wrote it. I agree that showgirl is an honest album too I just don’t agree that it’s more honest than something like ttpd!

Jess Taylor

I also wonder if this album feels different because, as she’s said in so many interviews, she’s in the same place now as when she wrote this album. That is so unlike her last several where it would take the next album to fully fathom the last. Everyone thought her and Joe were happy at the time of folklore, evermore, and midnights, which just wasn’t the case so it was a bit brain breaking to refathom and hear what she was telling us all along.

Jenny

Hannah, I completely agree with you! The girls actually blatantly said the depth thing, in their opinion, is ā€˜a valid *conversation*, not a valid *criticism*’. They are just having a conversation about it. They actually compliment the restraint it takes to write more pulled back, especially when your instinct (like Taylor) is to be so diaristic. They literally said nothing controversial in this video at all and their discussion was so thoughtful and considered. I really enjoyed hearing their musings!!!

Geneva

As someone who does like this album but admits that it's in my bottom three, thank you SO much for acknowledging the relative lack of depth and how it's an all-new thing for Taylor to do. It doesn't mean it's wrong, or bad, it's just different. And we can obviously choose what we do with that information

Jenny

I’m very grateful for all of your musings, they’re so insightful and interesting and I can tell you’ve really thought things through before you speak 🄰

Mike

58:08 I’m struggling to understand why you guys wanted her to bring up Matty and Joe on this album when we just got an entire 31 track album about them? An album where she went into extreme depth about how much Matty broke her heart, and where she confirmed that she still doesn’t fully understand why her and Joe didn’t work out and so it’s difficult for her to write about it (also, she really explored a lot of those feelings already in folklore and evermore)? I kind of don’t like the implication that because Taylor isn’t poring over every detail of her love life, that the album lacks depth. I think it’s quite the opposite. There’s ALWAYS more to fathom with a Taylor Swift album, and I think like Em said, TLOAS is intentionally ā€œvagueā€ because it’s another 1989 (which we know is Travis’s favorite album). 1989 was all about making fun bops that weren’t about heartbreak, and I think she’s done the same thing here, so why would we want her to spend time ruminating on relationships she’s already explored in exhaustive detail? I’m GLAD there aren’t really any major Matty/Joe mentions on this album. It makes Travis the focus, and while we might not get any specifics about their relationship, they’re so public and visible that I don’t really feel like we needed that? We’re not entitled to the details about Taylor’s love life, and also, maybe she just doesn’t have much to share! She’s happy, they’re in love, that’s it. I don’t feel like it’s as deep as you guys are trying to make it. With all due respect, I love you guys, but just saying.

vanessa

EXACTLY .

vanessa

If that’s your takeaway you don’t understand the album at all and fail to actually see and hear what she’s saying and all the callbacks to her discography to show her evolution and growth, super weird take

Lg

I mean this with so much love but I truly think this album was meant for Travis and Travis only. I think she made the album of his dreams and she just posted it on main bc she can, but everything from the Max Martin to the content and the ā€œbreezinessā€ or ā€œlack of depthā€ is because well…lol I’m not saying he isn’t smart but my guy probably loves jock jams and more surface level Big Tent Four Quadrant Pop Music and she was like, sure, here’s one for you KillaTrav! And that’s great! Good for her! The songs are better than the critical consensus wants you to believe and it’s ok that they aren’t super complex and it’s ok that this is currently my ā€œleastā€ favorite album! I think in time we will look back at this album as the ā€œone for himā€

Mex

wow, i come back to read more comments after waking up this morning and damn, the mood has shifted. clearly, people are triggered about the hate this album has gotten. a lot of us have our guards up and are ready to fight for taylor over every negative opinion. we aren't all going to agree on depth of songs or what lyrics mean or this album's place next to her other albums, but did you watch the girls react to the album? they loved it. they always support taylor. they don't have to worship every song or relate to every concept. for example, it doesn't upset me that bonny doesn't relate to wish list. i love wish list because the chorus feels like home to me. i coached basketball for years, and hearing taylor say she dreams of a life where there's a basketball hoop set up in the driveway for her kids and husband to play together is heartwarming and sweet to me. i get that bonny wants more from the song. i think it's valid to not want random wishes to take up so much space in the song. it just doesn't matter to me personally because the chorus and bridge make me smile and shed tears about taylor being happy and loved. the girls' job is to talk about the songs. please keep in mind that they loved the album, they love taylor and her family, they say repeatedly in every video about this album that they love it. they turn on the camera in patreon videos to have honest discussion with each other about what the music means to them and how it makes them feel

Laura

You can say this album is for him without insulting him.

anna

The colors I chose! Ophelia: OrangešŸ§”šŸ’ I feel like this is the lightning in a bottle she’s talking about. It feels electric as Travis would say lol Elizabeth Taylor: violet!! But like a rich dark violet šŸ’œšŸ· Opalite: light blue (opalite duh) šŸ©µšŸ’Ž Father Figure: mahogany šŸ¤ŽšŸ„ƒ Eldest Daughter: lilac šŸŖ»šŸŽ” Ruin the Friendship: yellow šŸ’›ā˜€ļø it reminds me of forever winter and how Taylor said she will be her summer sun forever. Also yellow by cold play 🄲 Actually Romantic: pinky red🩷 šŸ’‹ Wish list: gold šŸ†āœØ Wood: a dark (wooden) kinda orange? šŸŖµāļø Cancelled!: black šŸ–¤šŸ but I also get dark red imagery šŸ’„ Honey: I mean honey color? šŸÆāœØ The life of a showgirl: Orange again? I picked like three oranges LOL. But this one is more just like sparkle and bright lights āœØšŸ’–šŸŖ©šŸ§”ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Macarena

Helloooooo they are back! šŸ˜Ž

Kay Kay

I feel like everyone is having selective memory about the ā€œdepthā€ of taylors previous albums, as if its always been that way when its really a more recent thing and was only happening because she was bored to tears in her relationship and had to make stories up and intensely dive into her tortured feelings lol

Maggie

I appreciate your comments con re-fathoming the album, a reason why I continue to watch your guys videos is because I know you will be honest and not just say what people want to hear

anna

I love the lyric "pain, hidden by lipstick and lace" and "I paid my dues with ever bruise"

anna

I love "tis locked inside my memory and only you posses the key". It reminds me of I hate it here and how once it was "the only key is mine". It feels that Travis has entered the secret gardens in her mind and brought them into her real life, as we saw with their engagement!

Mary Conway

NO ONE IS FATHOMINGGG the connection between "storm inside a teacup" and "fades into the gray of my day old tea" from gold rush!!!

Jacob

Really enjoyed this. Definitely please do it with all the other albums :)

intandem

Good point! I feel like for ttpd there are a couple of songs that still seem confusing in terms of meaning where as I feel like for showgirl each song has such a clear theme

Alexina Derkaz

I have been ft by for you guys to do a favor LYRICS video!!!!!!! The colors added made it EVEN BETTER!! I would love this as a series 1000%

Mads

I actually think that her holding us more at arms length for this album 1) makes sense following TTPD and 2) actually makes this album really interesting to me. I think this album is her balance between her personal life, love life and professional life. It is the LIFE of the Showgirl. And I think she's in a really new place that she's never been before mentally. She was on her largest tour, dating this man that makes her feel loved and publicly supported after years of feeling hidden away. In my opinion this album is her testing out new boundaries. She wants to write about this life but she also wants to protect it. She is very selective about what she is showing us. It does feel lighter and more arms length. I think Eldest Daughter really shows her current state of mind: I finally found my person, the type of love I've always wanted and I'll never give them up or let them down. There is still fear and anxiety here just in a different way from previous albums. AND this album was written a year ago. They were still newer loves. I think emotional depth will come with time. It will be very different from the Tortured Depth. She's nailed that. Figuring out how to bring depth to a vibrant unproblematic love is different and I think it will be beautiful as she continues to figure that out. Eldest Daughter is a great example of that. Also Bonnie really nailed it in my opinion saying it doesnt feel like we are home with Taylor because she was on tour.

Char

this isn’t even an opinion based comment, this is just straight up nasty from you. if you really hate the girls space this much you simply don’t have to pay to be here.

Johanna M

Wish List to me is golden, or a sunshine yellow!

Johanna M

Yes! Please, do it for every album!!! ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Alina

My favourite lyric from Wishlist is ā€œwowā€.🤣As in Leave us the fuck alone and they do.. WOW. She knows damn well we would not. The underlying sarcasm is chef’s kiss.

Sana šŸ‡µšŸ‡ø

Wait but have you fathomed yet that ā€˜the colour of his eyes’ is pretty much the pale green of the album cover šŸ«£šŸ˜

Alina

i love that

Alina

ā€œThe end of a cigaretteā€ also has layers to me because the ash eventually falls off. You’re shining now but almost like Clara Bow/Nothing New, there’s gonna be the next ā€œlit up cigaretteā€ - Taylor or Sabrina or whoever

Anni

loved this! please do the other albums

Bradi R

The way you guys explain lyrics blow my mind so please do this for every album

Bradi R

It reminds me of the image of people on the hill for the eras show!

Prerna Singh

To clarify: I was not commenting on your opinion or your definition of depth or anything for that matter. My response was about what was said in the video, and not what you said. So no, I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. Sorry if it came across that way.

Geo

Loooved this so much and loved Bonny choosing ā€œfingers crossed until you put your hand on mineā€ for Wood ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ such a beautiful lyric that really reminds me of Olivia Dean’s song UFO where she says ā€œcan’t hold your hand with my fingers crossedā€ šŸ¤žšŸ›ø

Beth

I believe the depth of this album lies within the music and melodies, which makes sense considering who she worked with. And maybe that’s why it’s been quite hard for people to get around, because Taylor is more often than not all about the lyrics. But I think this was a different approach for her, and personally I have absolutely loved just vibing and singing along and not like omg what could she mean there?! It can get a bit tiresome for the conversation to always be about ā€˜what/who is this about’. She always knows what we need and when to give it. This album will be there for people when their time comes, as with all of her albums.

Beth

Conversation to always be around who/what is this about. I was sooo glad to have an album that is just like - this is me, I’m happy life is good. But I also think there’s more layers than might be obvious but it doesn’t even matter what those layers are really. I think about so high school, and that song is obvious, fun and cheeky.

Beth

I said when that song came out, that it’s a perfect reflection of her relationship with Travis because he just straight up loves her, he doesn’t make her wonder or question and when you find a love like that.. life is peaceful. I’m sorry to the people who feel disappointed by this album but I just simply don’t relatešŸ˜‚šŸ„°

Sophie kelly

Loved this vid! Please do it for every album!šŸ«¶šŸ»āœØ

Lisse

I love that both of you can discuss a feeling without being negative or dismissive of Taylor’s art. Like you said it’s a discussion, not a criticism. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!ā¤ļø

Alexia šŸ«¶šŸ»

First song in and EMILY we both choose the same lyric for Fate of Ophelia!!!

Alexia šŸ«¶šŸ»

Well I choose the same lyrics for Elizabeth Taylor. I’m just gunna shut up and watch and comment at the end at this point šŸ˜‚

Victoria

For me, i find the album to be similar to rep , like there is a real focus on the meaning of the production and how much emotion you can get from a certain sound. Both rep and showgirl have some hard lines, but overall, the real punch comes from the album sonically. I think in rep she had so much anger and def let a lot of anger show not through her lyrics but the production. I also think in Show Girl, she is so happy to be where she is in life that she kinda lets the lyrics be one with the production again, like a lot of the choices she makes come from a goal of making the song upbeat. So I think it makes sense that she wanted to express her feelings with Max and Shellback again, who are just good at conveying emotions through sound. I sometimes think its hard to express emotions like joy or anger in the same way as sadness so I find the link interesting. I think like reputation a lot of lyrics can be taken pretty surface level but have deeper meaning that we as a fandom still haven't completely fathomed, and I think it's similar to Showgirl. I think its hard when we have to really fathom a Taylor song as a whole for us as a fandom because we focus so heavily on the lyrics and not the production. But in the case of so many songs on this album, I feel like the way the songs are structured is critical to the story itself. You can tell in older songs that the production and lyrics were separate or one was created separately after the other (obvi alot of taylor songs are not made like this but speaking broadly), but on Showgirl, the songs are not complete without both parts. idk if my rep comparison makes any sense here this is just random thoughts I have been having as I have been fathoming lol. Idk honestly my fav thing about the album is just how happy it makes me my fav thing about rep is how empowered it makes me feel, and i would say for every other Taylor album its for the lyrics.

Lisse

I love this take!

Maggie Tallman

This album feels like slamming your trunk closed, hopping in the passengers seat, and taking off on the greatest roadtrip of your life with your favorite person. It’s excited, eager, light but there’s also the shadow of everything you’ve gone through. You push through those thoughts, you’ve marinated on them enough and there’s more you’ll go through in the future, but for right now you roll your windows down, turn up the volume and sing. 🩵

Beth

That’s just a perfect analogy ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Kasey

The Swiftologist review said she was writing around the relationship instead of from in it, and I do think that’s exactly it.

Feride Eron

EXCUSE ME did bonny fathom the link between "cause i thought id never find that beautiful beautiful light that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were young" AND "are there still beautiful things" in sevenn????? cause i feel like that would end her as much as it ended mešŸ’€

charlychops

A moment for "you say it like you're on awe of me and you stay until the morning" from honey. Its giving me "best friend who is hot" vibes and kinda sums up their relationship again.

Shar

I think the premise of wood is so deeply concerning for Taylor to say, because we KNOWW how much this woman was into signs and superstitions. I think she had to make it light and fun because it absolutely has the ability to go somewhere very deep, and she needed to instead have the love and light. I absolutely think we will be getting deeper, more poetic songs about Travis, but this was written a lot earlier in their relationship and at a time where she was really embracing his energy. I almost feel like a part of her may have held back because feeling secure is scary for her, and maybe she wasn't ready to be super vulnerable with this yet.

Megan

LOVE that you started this with ā€œI don’t know if this album has as much depth as the othersā€ and then proceed to spend a whole hour discussing how incredibly deep it actually is šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

✨Bri✨

Here’s some fathomings I’ve had about TLOAS that I haven’t really seen discussed yet. Maybe it’ll be fun for others to see things in a different perspective! Wish list: in wishlist I think that the verses are Taylor describing goals that people might have that are beyond their normal reach. Maybe they feel huge to them and impractical for their reality. While the chorus is her version of that. And it’s interesting because the chorus is more aligned with a normal persons reality, but for her it’s much harder to have that ā€œnormalā€ house and family life, and for people to leave them alone. That will most likely never happen to the same extent that it can for non famous people. I also think it’s interesting to think about the idea of wanting what you don’t have…and how in the end maybe we should be grateful for what we do have while also trying to achieve our goals? That’s how I think of that song! Elizabeth Taylor: my number 1 on the album! I’ve never thought about the bridge being like a threat as Emily has described it. Although that is an interesting way to think about it. But for me I’ve gotten that she means that it’s harder for her to escape the pain after a relationship ends bc they live on in a sense ā€œin the paper, screens, in their mindsā€ etc. This is also true for Elizabeth Taylor so it’s so clever to use that comparison but also I think in her saying that she’s saying please don’t be anything but mine bc it’s hard to escape that pain if it ends and since I love you so much I’ll end up ā€œcrying my eyes violet…etcā€. Like it will hurt even more than ever before. I personally find it to be more vulnerable than like a threat.

sierra

oh nooo what an offensive thing to say!!

Anna

Love this video idea <3 Thank you for the Father Figure recognition!! I've felt this way from the moment I heard it because whaddoyoumean it's so mindblowingly good...

EruditeGayming

I would say overall TLOAS is an 'easy' album - I did not have to labour to understand it while listening to it and I can listen to it for enjoyment only. As a very recent Swiftie convert who's a long time Florence and the Machine fan and TTPD is my stan album, i don't agree with the take that the lyricism of this album is necessarily worse than previous projects - particularly when most of the people i see expressing that opinion are misunderstanding a lot of the songs at a fundamental level. I think at least part of the issue is that this album is very fractured thematically - instead of every track being linked to Taylor and her personal life, its conceptualized along the lines of ''Life of a Showgirl - specific aspect of that life - a song that captures that feeling'' and i think that's whats tripping up a lot of people.

Cali

OMG Bonny's Opalite lyric breakdown!! I never fathomed the thunder being the drum like its the music your dancing to when the lightning strikes!! So good!

Jenny

LOVE THIS !!!!

Hannah B

I was so worried I wasn't going to like this album when I first heard it based off of others opinions.... but I LOVED it on first listen and it's only grown on me more as the weeks have gone by. It's a skipless album for me and that's coming from someone whose fav album is Evermore ( literally the complete opposite to TLOAS). I love TOLAS more than Midnights ( which although I like midnights I found it very confusing when it was first released it's grown on me more as we've all learnt new information and connected the dots). If you look back on the last few albums TOLAS is the album we needed! It's a breath of fresh air the melodies are so infectious I don't need the songs to be super deep I enjoy listening to this album sooo much! - I know not everyone feels the same but that's what makes us all unique individuals with our own opinions and thoughts on things šŸ’–

Vero Alló

I have just thought that maybe the feeling that we didn’t learn anything new about Taylor or that is less intimate comes maybe from the fact that this is the era we know the most about her life and her relationship? She tells a lot about Travis and their style of relationship in the songs, even more than other relationships I think, but we already see them doing those things or showing up for each other in real life so the impact of hearing it in the songs maybe is less?

Val Flores

I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU GUYS TO DO THIS FOR ALL

Kb8248

Nah, Taylor makes music for Taylor. This is where she was in her life and the album reflects her feelings. Fans need to realize Taylor makes music to examine life. She’s not writing for anyone but herself. Saying it was written for Travis is a cope. Fans need to accept Taylor is not writing to please anyone but to be true to herself and her own feelings. And the Travis is dumb trope is lazy thinking and weird projection of someone you see only snippets of. People project dumb jock onto him, but he’s way more clever and savvy than superficial swifties will give him credit for.

Honey

This! ā¤ļø

Honey

Bonny’s fathoming of her favourite Opalite lyric 🤯🤯✨✨ I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOUR SONG BY SONG BREAKDOWN VIDEOS FOR MORE INCREDIBLE FATHOMINGS! 😭🩵

Rachel Herring

šŸ˜‚ like a bitch little dog you guys have me cracking up

Andree

Favorite lyric - (Opalite) ā€˜just shelter here with me, my love’ I realize she is probably talking to Travis but I take it as she is talking to her fans - if you are going thru a hard time, just listen to her music and she will bring you love, love, love, love! Don’t you sweat it baby! šŸ’•

rosie

my fave lyrics: 1. 'tis locked inside my memory and only you posses the key - reminds me of i hate it here "people need a key to get to, the only one is mine" the prophecy has changedddd 2. don't you ever end up anything but mine - reminds me of new years day "please don't ever become a stranger who's laugh i could recognise anywhere" 3. never made no one like you before you had to make your own sunshine- calls back to "my spine split from carrying us up the hill" and "grey and blue and fights and tunnels handcuffed to the spell I was under, for just one hour of sunshine" 4. this empire belongs to me - chills every. time. 5. beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back 6. goodbye, and we'll never know why šŸ’” 7. you think i'm tacky baby, stop talking dirty to me - just love the way this line sounds 8. we tell the world to leave us the fuck alone... and they do 9. a bad sign is all good 10. something wicked this way comes - because i HAVE to sing it like the harry potter song every time. slay 11. but you say it like you're in awe of me 12. pain hidden by the lipstick and lace - sums up the whole life of a showgirl concept. had to stop a few mins in to do mine okie now i'll finish the video ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

sierra

idk i’d argue that red is full of depth. i think it’s a perfect example of an album not having poetic grand lyrics (at the level of her last few albums) & still being deep

rosie

also we simply need this video for every album - fave lyric of each song šŸ«¶šŸ¼

1. I swore my loyalty to me, myself and I right before you lit my sky up 2. Be my NY when Hollywood hates me 3. And what a simple thought, you’re starving ā€˜til you’re not 4. Just step into my office, I dry your tears with my sleeve, leave it with me 5. And things I said were dumb cuz I never thought that I’d find that beautiful beautiful life that shimmers that innocent life back like when we were young 6. It was not an invitation but I flew home anyway (simply because of how the word invitation now means something else) 7. And I know you think it comes off vicious, but it’s precious, adorable 8. I also take the ā€œglowing like the end of a cigaretteā€ to mean that the narrator/Taylor was glowing because they were so mesmerised and excited to see her come out! Love you chickens 🐄🩷

This type of comment and energy isn’t welcome here. This is such a rude, nasty and condescending comment and honestly if this is what you believe of the girls then this isn’t the space for you.

Tami

YES 100% agree!!! Like, in my opinion, she tells us the most about her and travis relationship on this album, than ever before. Most songs for Matty, John or anyone else, but especially Joe were so full of anxiety and sadness. Maybe that's why it seems like, we know more, because being vulnerable comes always with sadness in my opinion. Because you open up about something, that makes you feel like this, because something before happened. And don't get me wrong, there were also so many happy songs for Joe, but in the end, she always had a little bit of questioning in her songs. Showgirl seems not very vulnerable, but she tells us vulnerable moments, that happened before and shows us, that Travis made her anxiety go away in these moments. He stayed. This album tells the happy end. We know the story before, all the up and downs. This is the fairytale ending and as if that is not absolutely wonderful, meaningful and beautiful, idk. With saying of Bonnys favorite new sentence from Taylor: DEEPTH WITHOUT DARKNESSšŸ«¶šŸ¼

Emelie

Love that you’re saying that bc that was my show 😁

Vanessa Young

Elizabeth Taylor is a dark royal purple for me. šŸ’œ Maybe it's because of the violet eyes references, but that's what I see when I listen to it!

V. Babida

lol I am dying at the pitbull costumes!!!! So iconic of you and your family Em!!!

ā€ŽI've written it down before watching and I feel like I am vibing with both of you !! ā€Ž ā€Ž ā€Ž1. "... Now I can see it all" (teal) ā€Ž2. "Be my NY when Hollywood hates me" (burgundy) ā€Ž3. Opalite lyrics šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

vanessa

weird to be regurgitating and supporting a misogynistic persons’ thoughts about an album. Mind you he called Taylor a whore, said he wants her distressed/sad and her happiness is a facade, and said she wants to ruin her legacy by being a mother and being married. Disgusting

Maria Lopes

i have to say opalite is my favorite song on the album bc of the bridge, especially "this is just a temporary speed bump but failure bring you freedom and I can bring you love, don't you sweat it baby" bc I can relate SO MUCH it feels like I'm really close to something and then I always loose, so it was like Taylor was talking to me, I'm not ashamed to confess I cried lol she really does bring me love

Macarena

Ruin the friendship is baby pale orange for me, driving , sunsetšŸŒ…

Ekolenski

ā€œThey mistook my kindness for weaknessā€ is a lyric from Lana’s Mariners Apartment Complex which is interesting

Alexa

In my head, the lyric ā€œI chose this cyclone with youā€ is the microcosm of TTPD. The equivalent for this record for me would be ā€œfingers crossed until you put your hand on mine.ā€ It just feels like the core of everything she’s saying!! I can’t explain it hahah it’s just a gut feeling :)

Amy Sawyer

Ruin the Friendship has become my top song too!

Kasey

Uhhh…he literally didn’t say any of that?

Courtney

Father Figure one-liner for me is ā€œthis empire belongs to meā€. I get giddy and get chills EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

vanessa

yes he did. there’s proof everywhere online of him saying these exact things on his discord…

Kasey

Ok Vanessa.

Hannah Grace

I listen to this album for the best upbeat tracks. Doing the lawns is possible with TLOAS. The lyrics are far superior to many people, just cause she has taken a break from telling us all of her deep thoughts doesn’t detract anything for me

Lindsey M

Taylor has clearly set boundaries over the past few years with her fans, and I think this album is a good example of those boundaries. We get some surface level info about her relationship that we largely already knew, but she’s not going to expose her life partner or her to any more intrusiveness than she has to, and that includes in her music. At the same time, she’s being much more blunt than she has since the early days and refusing to allow false narratives to develop (e.g. The Alchemy isn’t about Travis foolishness) or to couch her real experiences with third-parties (e..g. The distance of the narratives she told about Folklore/Evermore/Midnights because she couldn’t be upfront about how miserable she really was.) It seems a lot of people are looking for ā€œteaā€ on this album based in part on how heavy the focus on muses has been in her work, and it’s just not present, nor is it likely to be going forward in the future. Perhaps fans need to relearn how to appreciate her work after the torture of the last four albums. Who knows if this boundary lasts forever as is, but it’s present at least in this album. I also don’t agree that this album doesn’t have depth because there’s so much introspection and comparison to be made between how Taylor used to feel or perceive things versus where she is now; she’s exploring monumental worldview changes in this album.

Gi

My fav lyric from honey is "if anyone called me Honey, it was standing in the bathroom, white teeth" one bc I think it's so relatable, but also the choice of "white teeth" just perfectly captures the energy of someone saying that to you and I never would've thought to word it like that! But I know exactly what kind of expression/smile she means by those two words. I think it's not always obvious how good the writing is on LOAS unless you stop and consider how someone else might have worded it instead šŸ˜…

KC

I’d love to hear your favorite lyrics for more albums! Father figure is near impossible to pick a single lyric but my soul just soarssss when I hear ā€œwhose portraits on the mantle?!ā€ and ā€œthis empire belongs to meā€ Also very random but pitbull performed at our tech conference closing party recently and he donated his fee for the night to send 10k kids to school. Which is a just a super cool move

vanessa

Did you not read the things he said lmao? I linked it for you. How can someone be a fan of Taylor and defend a man who speaks about her that way???

Kasey

You know, I made a pretty benign comment, and I feel like you’re jumping down my throat. It’s really not necessary. I’m just trying to enjoy and engage with the content and her music. For what it’s worth, I didn’t see a link to any of his comments.

Amy Sawyer

I dont think this album is "For" Travis, but I do think the light, upbeat, breezy vibe of it is a very Travis vibe. A human exclamation point if you will

Rose Ellen

I think it’s interesting how we’ve previous talked about how secure she is on this album - both in her relationship and her career - and how that relates to the emotional ā€œdepthā€ of this album. There’s not as many soul crushing lyrics on this album because that’s not where she is in her life. Her soul is not being crushed! She’s happy and secure and we’ve never had an album that she’s made feeling that way, so it makes sense if it’s hitting different. This album makes me cry at least once every listen because I am SO DAMN PROUD of my big sis Taylor šŸ˜‚šŸ„³

Amy Sawyer

I also think with Joe she was writing AT him, like--"look how anxious you are making me feel. Look how much I Iove you! Love me back!"

Rose Ellen

Favourite lyric from Honey is ā€˜When anyone called me lovely they were finding ways not to praise me, But you say it like you’re in awe of me’ 🄰

Gi

I had to come back to give my speech about Honey. I think it's very important and telling that Taylor chose not to have most of the song be about her past relationships. She literally tells us when ANYONE called her those names it was these women or people being mean to her. I think from that we could infer men from past relationships didn't actually use pet names with her. A lot of them seemed to take themselves very seriously I could definitely see them thinking it's too corny or something. When she finally does talk about a past relationship she switches it to "when anyone called me late night", she specifically doesn't use a pet name there. I just see that as a second confirmation that really this is the first time a lover has used them for her. And even though the production is very different and new (and amazing) the core of the song is sooo early Taylor to me! Lines like "And I cried the whole way home" just makes me feel like this song could be on Debut or Speak Now

MK

the fans ā€œglowing like the end of a cigaretteā€ to me compares the infatuation of fans with the end of a cigarette - toxic, fleeting, addicting, poisonous, chasing the next high, always afraid it’s running out, etc…

Annie Kycek Allen

Yes please to doing fav lyrics from other albums!!!!

Jess Davis

I think one of my main criticisms about this album is based on something I once heard a music critic say which is that even though people think of men as being the subject of Taylor songs, the main character in all of her (autobiographical) songs is HER. And I feel like with this album, she’s the main character of the ALBUM, and obviously the narrator, but a lot of the songs seem to have a more even split between her story and her feelings and someone else’s.

Jess Davis

Another reason this album feels different to me and that I think contributes to the feeling of it lacking emotional depth is that Taylor, as a character in a lot of these songs, lacks agency. Things are happening to her, but she’s not doing a lot. She is being called Honey, she is being saved from The Fate of Ophelia, she is being talked about in Actually Romantic. All the songs that do show her having agency and doing something, it’s in regard to her career, not her emotional life. This is a big reason why I really prefer the OG lyrics to The Fate of Ophelia. Still quite like the album, but I agree with your feelings and appreciate the nuanced takes.

Jess Davis

Emily and Bonny, don’t let this comments section scare you about your feelings on the depth of the album. I think you make good points and even if I didn’t agree with you (I do agree though), it’s good to have this kind of nuanced conversation about the art.

vanessa

Like I normally love their content which is why I joined the Patreon but the way they wish that she explored more of her heartbreak/want her to compare travis with Joe and matty when she released 31 songs about joe/matty & those chapters of her life and said that period and chapter of her life was boarded and closed up. We don’t need to go back there and SHE doesn’t want to go back there. She touches on so many themes/lyrics from TTPD and even other albums throughout her whole discography that show so much growth she has had personally and in her new relationship. The important person here is TAYLOR and her story and she shows so much reflection throughout the album that i feel like is really being missed and im so tired of people minimizing it because they want to muse hunt and want ā€œteaā€ to feed the parasocialism instead of enjoying the music & actually reflecting on the ART not what or who the art is about . them saying stuff like that makes me think they also adopt some of those viewpoints which is really unfortunate and sad cause i really thought they were the only normal swiftie influencers 🫤

Mike

Yeah :/ agreed. And normally they aren’t like that so I’m not sure what changed all of the sudden. I love them, maybe they just aren’t properly conveying what they mean or something? Idk

Daniel Youngelman

Simply have to say ā€œredefined all of those bluesā€ really gets me because of all the references to Joe and blue lyrically and it’s like Travis has redefined her OWN sadness and saved her etc. sooooo offensive

Christine

That’s what I was thinking!

Christine

Fav lyric: Father Figure: ā€˜Said, "They wanna see you rise, they don't want you to reign.’ You’re expected to make $ for the record label, but not so much that you gain too much power. Genius

Christine

Ok, I wonder if Taylor heard criticism about Tortured Poets being wordy, too deep, or complex and said, ā€˜Fine, then here’s TLOAS.’ I also think she was intentionally cryptic in Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights for many reasons that left Swifties analyzing lyrics extensively, and now we’re given this album that we just get immediately and we’re not used to it. Swifties like to figure out Easter eggs and analyze lyrics and we’re just not used to this, doesn’t mean this album is not really good though!!

Kay Kay

There is absolutely depth there! but like have you heard 22?šŸ˜‚ im just saying like its not the first time shes ever just had some fun with her writing

Grace

I also think ā€œglows like the end of a cigaretteā€ can easily be an allusion to the showgirl burning out. The lyric comes right before ā€œā€¦wow, she came outā€ which seems to me to be a direct link — the showgirl is so overworked, so exhausted, on the receiving end of the public and promoter’s hunger that her flame is reaching its end. Her spark is fading. Perhaps even her love for the show is fading — she experienced the highs (similar to addiction) and now she’s realized that ā€œthe more that you play, the more that you pay.ā€ The cigarette has burned. The cigarette was the playing and now she’s reached the end and sees all the ash that she has paid.

Julia

Ohh you’re right! That’s why it sounded so familiar

Julia

So true, and even though it might be sad, I think she has to keep us at arms length if she really wants this relationship to survive in the long run. How else can she build true intimacy and trust with her partner?

Foxy_Tatty

Eldest Daughter’s bridge has lyrics in it that remind me of her Fortnite reel: ā€œTime lapse,ā€ cause it’s a video compilation, ā€œFerris wheelsā€ reminded me of the lit up park you see them walking through. ā€œKissesā€ we see Travis kiss her when she’s cooking. ā€œLilacsā€ reminds me of her lilac skirt. Maybe I’m off, but I wasn’t looking for Easter eggs. It’s just the imagery I got when I first heard it. For Father Figure, the first color that came to mind was silver, like an older man whose hair is turning gray. In cancelled, ā€œWelcome to my underworldā€ reminds me of that scene in the Karma music video where she looks rep coded šŸ–¤

Kb8248

I disagree. I think the agency on the album is ā€˜we’ instead of ā€˜me’ Opalite, (we make our own happiness) Wishlist (we’re building a life together) , Wood (we don’t need to be superstitious because our relationship is strong enough), Eldest Daughter (we are each other’s safe space, home). It’s also nice to hear how the partner feels about Taylor for a change. Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor, Honey. I think too often in Taylor songs we don’t get a good understanding how Taylor is being nurtured in the relationship instead alot of energy is towards the partner and not back to her.

Verush

No one's giving credit? Saying she might feel more comfortable sharing deeper details with people she's closer with isn't giving credit to anyone but her

Aine Leddy

Fate of Ophelia lyric "And if you'd never come for me I might've drowned in the melancholy" as I think it shows the departure from the last two Albums and is a good call back to the first song on Midnights - Lavender Haze - the imagery and more what it really was than what she said it was.

Tara718

I have a very similar love story to Taylor which is probably why Tortured poets and life of a showgirl are now my favorite albums. After having such a vulnerable album full of poetry, deep meaning, and pain, the life of a showgirl is the perfect follow up and the exact feeling you get when finally snapping out of that pain and finding the person you are meant to be with. It’s fun and silly and sexy bc that’s what it feels like in its basic form. Fate of Ophelia is such a great transition of the two albums. Personally the line I swore myself to me, myself, and I right before you lit my sky. Just when you give up and decide you won’t look for anyone anymore and you are just going to work on being your best self, your person just pops up out of nowhere. There are no games to play or fronts to put up so you get to be your best version. I don’t think the album is distant at all bc when I experience something similar I couldn’t really explain what I was feeling I just knew I was finally happy and healthy, smiling and laughing all the time. You don’t want to talk about feelings as much bc they were so intense for the past several years you just want to be and live in the moment. So to me this album is a way to capture that specific feeling when it was new and developing. Like you said it’s just a vibe and I believe it was meant to be just that. The deeper stuff will come as their relationship reaches new milestones :)

Lg

I didn’t insult him

Lg

That’s a crazy thing to say!

Mandy Tidwell

I think a lot of people don’t really understand and appreciate what depth without darkness actually means.

Mandy Tidwell

I think a lot of the depth and complexity is in the music itself and the stylistic and production choices. It feels like there is a subset of people who think complexity and depth can only be found in lyrics (and I still think there’s plenty of lyrical depth on this album).

Mandy Tidwell

Also, we have seen so much of the relationship because they’ve been so open. How much deeper could she go without giving details that have no business being public?

Erica R

ā€œYou want a fight you found it. I got the place surrounded.ā€

Deb

I just rewatched some of the video Bonny and Emily posted here because this video really hit me as so disappointing. And I guess the main issue came into focus with the scene where Bonny is clawing around with her hands, saying she was searching for those moments where Taylor would share heart break and "pull her heart out of her chest" and the thought that come to mind was that Bonny likes Taylor's songs when Taylor is "eating out of the trash" and serving tea for her "empathic hunger" as Taylor described in How Did it End. It was so disappointing to hear this and have this image of darkness that has posed as depth.

ems 𓆑 . ā‚ŠĖš ゚. ✧

I really appreciated this video. It felt like a great conversation, and a great conversation being had where two things can be true - you can appreciate what it is, and also discuss what it isn't. I'm glad you're creating a space for people to talk about that respectfully, because I think the negativity can get loud but the defensiveness on the other side gets loud too where any opinion or thought that isn't 100% joy is shouted at as just "not getting it" or not being a "true fan". I absolutely get what is being said about the lack of depth, and I do think that is kind of objectively true? How much weight is placed on that is up to each individual person, but it's an interesting conversation. For me, when I say it's not deep, I don't mean "it's not sad enough". I mean it's not as vulnerable as she's gone before, or as closely personal to her. So High School, for example, is an infectiously happy song - but it's also written in a way that has vulnerability and shows how she feels in a way that only she can. She has written plenty of love songs that contain beautiful descriptions of the person she loves, but I can't think of one on this album we get about Travis. I don't know anything more about him than I did before this record. In fact, the most poignant thing said about him in this era was on the podcast when she described him as depth without darkness. That is one of the most stunning things I've ever heard someone say about a person, but that isn't how deep (ironically) she goes on this record. And that's not to say she needs to tell us private details of her life, but even on Midnights where she was incredibly vague she did still share emotional depth. This album feels like a bit of that 1989 era where she seemed to want to present as an idea of herself, in a way, as "Taylor Swift, Pop Star". And to present herself here as the idea of a showgirl, and get us to see her in that way, she couldn't also bare her soul as "Taylor Swift, writing songs in her bedroom". I adore Elizabeth Taylor (and that bloom lyric, chef's kiss) and Father Figure, but in both she is almost playing a characterisation of herself -- I don't imagine her *actually* sitting at a dark desk in a cigar-scented office telling people her dick is bigger. Or songs like wi$h li$t where it seems she is truly trying to say "wow, now I've met you...maybe I don't want to take over the world and do just want to settle down and have a family", but she puts distance between us and that vulnerable truth by talking about what other people want and filling lines with references to palm d'ors and oscars and lit spring breaks. But there's a place for everything. Sometimes you want more out of a song, and sometimes you put on Shake It Off because it isn't the most vulnerable song in the world but it's an absolute bop and maybe that's all you need.

Martin Harbo

Two thoughts: I’ve taken the line ā€œBuy the paint in the color of your eyes and grafitti my whole damn lifeā€ as Taylor telling Travis to do so - to grafitti her with his eyes (physically look at her, but also in the bigger picture see her for who she is behind the curtain) The ā€œtook her pearls of wisdom, hung them from my neckā€, I think about where pearls come from - they are formed as a defense mechanism and gathered by cutting open the shell. To me, this is symbolic of the lessons she has had to learn in the industry, and how she’s now passing them on

Hatoun

I agree its very disappointing to see, especially with the way that it feels like it has to be coming from a sad place to be vulnerable. in rep she was sad and hated so it shows emotion in that way and feels like its love because everyone left and he stayed in lover its filled with anxiety but when she comes with an album that she clearly feels loved and secure its not that deep its very hypocritical to think that way. i understand music is supposed to be perceived the way that you want it to but the negativity especially in the beginning of the video it kinda feels like their disappointed that she is not sharing more which i feel like is very negative message to send. she is happy and says it how it is especially that this album is very uplifting and positive and shes clearly happy in it shes not feeling anxious or insecure and it seems that they want to see that side of her in order for it to be deep especially with the way they phrased it at the beginning of the video its like they are agreeing with what some of her haters are saying. I understand they can have their opinions and thoughts and its their patreon i get that but sometimes it just spreads negativity towards taylor and some of her fans especially with the amount of hate this album is getting and for very unnecessary reasons

ems 𓆑 . ā‚ŠĖš ゚. ✧

Often, the thing that makes you claw your heart out of your chest isn't someone else's truth - it's someone describing a feeling you have felt so perfectly. You Are In Love is a gorgeously happy song, and it does that for me, because it is such a beautiful depiction of the feeling of being in love. I don't think the critique that this album doesn't have as much depth as previous ones is bad. It's an interesting conversation, and I don't think Bonny or Emily are saying it out of a desire for depth of information - but rather depth of emotion. She loves this man enough to marry him, and I would love more descriptions of how that feels for her - because I know it would be beautiful. She described him in the podcast as 'depth without darkness'. That provides no salacious detail, is not sad, and is absolutely stunning with plenty of depth and beauty and poetry.

carla_stone

OMG great video guys!!! I would looooovee to know your favorite lyrics from every album <3

Camila Dejesus

This beginning conversation is so fascinating to me. I actually find this album very deep & honest, not anything close to Midnights or TTPD, but Ruin The Friendship, Father Figure, even Cancelled! to an extent. What I really think feels different to me is that this is the first time in 6+ years and like 5 albums, Taylor isn't suffering in a relationship. And when you get into a healthy relationship, there's not really much to write home about. She's happy, things are good, they're figuring things out. I just think we're not used to hearing her not struggle. In some ways, the audience was her confidant, and now she has someone who can be that. I don't think Taylor could write an album and not be honest. I just think maybe for the first time, this is really all that's happening in her life. And we, as an audience, are not used to that.

Camila Dejesus

Taylor has been talking about legacy lately, and I think this album is exactly what she wanted for her legacy. I mean, look at all her past work; she has dedicated albums and eras to these men who broke her heart. This feels different. She wanted to write an album that could encapsulate what it felt like to be in love with Travis. This is going to be her husband, the father of her kids. And I think she wants a piece of media to showcase that. When you look back on her life story, this is an important chapter, and I think this album will be remembered fondly <3

Hatoun

I agree with your jack point taylor is an artist she doesn’t define her lyrics based on who is producing it. they keep on bringing that topic up saying it’s because shes writing it with max and not jack as if she cant show her emotions in WRITING if its not her friends producing it. at the end of the day this music is being shared to the world not just her producers. Its like as if she is not able to do that

Hatoun

Agreeeed

Hatoun

Exactly, very disappointed

Andrea

I totally get what you mean girls. Maybe we were expecting something like some New Years Day o You Are In Love kind of songs, but Taylor just focused on making a "good vibes album" and that's alright too! She's been wanting to make an album this happy and uncomplicated her whole life (like her love for Travis probably feels like). I'm sure we'll get deeper emotional songs later on, but for now the vibes are these. HOWEVER, I believe the acoustic songs really added another layer to the songs. Production sometimes can make songs seem not as deep as they are(?) Anyway, I'd say my fav lyrics from each song are the following (everyone, feel free to reply) :D TFOO- And if you'd never come for me (Come for me), I might've lingered in purgatory ET- All the right guys promised they'd stay, Under bright lights, they withered away, But you bloom OPALITE- You finally left the table (Uh, uh), And what a simple thought, You're starving 'til you're not FF- "They wanna see you rise, they don't want you to reign" ED- 'Cause I thought that I'd never find thatBeautiful, beautiful life thatShimmers that innocent light back Like when we were young RTF- Your smile Miles wide (this one just hits so hard the way she sings it) AR- Like a toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse, That's how much it hurts WL- I made wishes on all of the stars WOOD- Seems to be that you and me, we make our own luck CANCELLED!- Now they've broken you like they've broken me, But a shattered glass is a lot more sharp HONEY- Wintergreen kiss, all mine TLOAS- Do you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?

Madeline

I totally agree with what you guys are saying about the way this album is settling in. I feel like I’ve taken it in pretty quickly and also found myself moving on to other music (Taylor or otherwise) more quickly than I have before. With Tortured Poets I honestly don’t think I listened to anything else for a full six months. With Showgirl I think because of the length I repeat listened so many times in the first two weeks that I found myself ready to move on quite quickly. That’s not to say this is bad though… I love (most of) the songs on the album and it feels easy to go back to when I’m in the mood, which is often!

Sleepymoo

I love the bright lights lyric partly because it was one of the Easter eggs in the podcast.

Erica Robinson

Or the bad blood music video with all her girls

Erica Robinson

I salute you if you’re much too much to handle

Illy

You guys!! We need your reaction to this album 'West End Girl' by Lily Allen! šŸ”„

Kirsten Cooper

If I can say something about wood, that defends the crassness a bit- I have people in my life that know I’m a Swifty and the only thing that non-Swifty’s have talked to me about is this song. I think it speaks to the fact that the general Zeitgeist has been really affected by Sabrina Carpenter and more sexual lyrics and stuff like that. I really think that, including those jokes in that song was a brilliant move to capture the next generation of Taylor Swift fans. One of the girls who asked me about it is a teenager I know and she said wood is what everyone is talking about at school.

sierra

yeah you’re absolutely right there are some very fun & surface level songs on red too lol

Deb

This is so well said. I get so impatient with folks wanting the "tea" and trying to assign a "man" to every lyric. That isn't "depth" or "emotional connection" that is what Swift was calling everyone out on in But Daddy I Love Him and especially in How Did It End.

Ash94

To start this, I do LOVE this album and I know they do too. I think I get what Bon and Em were saying... I knew on the announcement that this album probably wouldn't be my favourite just because I'm such a fan of the more ttpd/folklore vibes of recent years, and I think the album is what I was expecting. It does have deep lyrics and the vibes are so fun but I completely agree when the Girls said that it feels like it's not as much to unpick. Maybe because it's only 12 songs after 31 of ttpd. BUT it's amazing and completely what she intended it to be. The intention was strong and Taylor achieved it in the best way possible. The best thing about her albums is that there is one for every possible occasion and this is just another string to her bow whether it's your favourite or not. Its still the most superior of its kind! 🧔🧔🧔

alex

I personally see a lot of depth in this album and as a person in a happy marriage I very much get an Imagination of their relationship and how much the way she talks about love has changed. Is it my favorite album? No because rep exists But it is such a positive warm bubbly album and this makes it soooo much more listenable then TTPD. Some people need to touch some grass (not our chickens!)

alex

This! I tried to say it in my comment above but you did it better

Ash94

Yes that's true! Maybe all the (much appreciated) interviews she's given us has altered the processing time. Like I said, I still love it. Father figure is sublime šŸ˜ I think the fate of ophelia is her strongest lead single in many years. Honey has the vibesss and there is so much to love in the other songs. It does its job perfectly. It will always be a part of my personality from now on šŸ˜‚ I just think it's important to hear people's opinions and be alright with them voicing them (as long as it's not hate obviously, because that's never needed) knowing we all love Taylor and will support her forever. ā¤ļø

Lison

eldest daughter is so blue to me though!! I really don’t feel the yellow at all! Also what a great idea to do that!!

vanessa

It’s SO reflective for those who see it! I agree that it’s really sad that swifties can’t find depth in that growth

Courtney D

"But love was a cold bed full of scorpions The venom stole her sanity" "They say I'm bad news, I just say, 'Thanks' " "You finally left the table And what a simple thought, you're starving till you're not" "The winding road leads to the chateau" "So many traitors Smooth operators" "Glistening grass from September rain" "It's actually romantic You've just given me so much… attention! It's actually romantic It's so romantic" "I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not (I did not)" "Seems to be that you and me, we make our own luck" "But a shattered glass is a lot more sharp" "But you touch my face Redefine all of those blues" "But I'm immortal now, baby dolls"

Courtney D

But the actual best is "I protect the family"

SharonM

Unpopular opinion: I DON’T think you should do the same format for other albums. I loved this video for this album Becca has it’s not that lyrically heavy. The other albums are so I don’t think it would work as well. This was really fun!!

Ash94

Yes completely agree with everything you've said there! A new Tay album is always such a special time. Sammmeeee with anthology. Peter, I hate it here, How Did It End, the bolter, chloe or sam. Love so many so deeply! Loved this chat 😊 x

Lindsey M

I appreciate the connection you made to How Did It End and the microscopic examination people have put on her music because it made me think of I Hate It Here and the line ā€œI'll save all my romanticism for my inner lifeā€ and how she’s poured so much of herself into her last four albums because she wasn’t fulfilled in her real life. Now that she is fulfilled, it stands to reason that her relationship to music has also changed; it doesn’t have to be a lifeline anymore because she’s no longer drowning. The discourse around this album has seemed so strange to me because upon first listen, my first thought was that this was the most well rounded album we’ve ever had from Taylor. She’s exploring all aspects of her life and personality; personal, professional, her past, her future, her snarkiness and her regret and her love and her power. I came away with a holistic understanding of her in ways I really never have in prior albums.

kristsn

Please do this for other albums I really appreciate it

Amy

yes thank you!! I agreed with them 100% and just because they have a different opinion than other swifties doesn't mean they love Taylor any less. TLOAS is not one of my favorite albums and that is okay people! And Emily and Bonny clearly adore this album and have not contributed to the insane hate it has been receiving. People in this comment section need to chill out and use their energy in better ways.

Amy

I agree with you Jess about the Fate of Ophelia. I would have preferred the original lyrics, but it is still my favorite track on the album!

CK

1. "you wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine..." 2. "...forever in the papers on the screen and in their minds." 3. "This is just a storm inside a teacup..." 4. "leave it with me."--I'm sorry but just leave the masters with him? She said here are the fishes to swim with. šŸ˜‚ 5. "So many traitors, smooth operators, but I'm never gonna break that vow." 6. "Staying friends is safe, doesn't mean you should." 7. "It's honestly wild all the effort you've put in." 8. "I thought I had it right once, twice but I did not, you caught me off my guard." 9. "I took him back, then stepped on a crack." 10. "But a shattered glass is a lot more sharp" 11. "When you say honey, summertime spritz, pink skies." 12. "Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace"

ton

I continue to struggle to relate to what you’re saying in this vid as I work through it. I think it’s because I consider the feeling of love and joy to be genuine and vulnerable and that maybe you only equate feelings that are negative as being vulnerable and genuine? Perhaps why you don’t feel how connected she is here? This is pure raw Taylor for me reaching out to fans to say how happy she is. The idea she’s not ā€˜specific’? What???? šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜±

Jenny

YES THANK YOU

Caroline Farley

I do consider this album to be deep. I think it comes more so from the feeling and music vs. the lyrics. She’s conveying the way she feels with love and everything with the music and the feeling (happy, unserious, giddy, dancy, ā€œdarkā€, etc.) and to me that is such a beautiful thing. She nailed it imo.

chatsandreacts

Oh wow, that could not be more wrong. I'm sorry you miss understood me or if i didn't communicate it well... I do not think sadness is the only way to be deep. I don't even gravitate to her sad songs... I was just trying to share some of my feelings on this particular morning. I think there is a lot of depth in this album, it just feels a little more at arms length them the past few albums. And thats not even a bad thing. its just different and we are discussing that.

chatsandreacts

Thank you Mex, its so frustrating when we try to share a feeling that might be a tiny but more negative and everyone just forgets ALL the praise and positivity we have said for weeks about this album. WE LOVE THIS ALBUM, we do think its got depth its just a different experience from past albums and we are fathoming that and thinking about it.

chatsandreacts

I make this point at 47:45. To restrain herself from giving certain details for the sake of creating the art she wants to at any given time is a talent in itself.

Lucie S

I really relate to what you said about the album ! I love it, but I feel like I fathomed it quite quickly, which is ok ! It makes me happy and dance !

Naomi P

Fate of Ophelia 🧔 Elizabeth Taylor šŸ¤ Opalite 🩵 Father figure 🩶 Eldest daughter šŸ’œ Ruin the friendship šŸ’š Actually romantic 🩷 Wish list šŸ’› Wood šŸ¤Ž Cancelled šŸ–¤ Honey ā¤ļø TLOASG ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Char

A lot of us know you didn’t mean that Bonny don’t worry. You even said yourself, travis is a muse that is depth without darkness. I’m sorry you are receiving such condescending messages ā™„ļø

Maya D

My fave lyric from Honey (and lowkey offended you didn't mention it lol) is "and when anyone called me 'lovely' they were finding ways to not praise me but you say it like you're IN AWE of me and you stay until the morning"?????? In awe???!! actually fucks me up each time i hear it

Joey

Thank you for contemplating that. I fathomed after a week. Loved the album. But I don’t listen to it now. Not that I don’t like it. But it doesn’t call on me. It’s fine but yes something new.

Joey

I think she also did a 180 and was on all shows and all radio shows saying it all. And being a different persona than we have seen over the years. So yeah it’s something to consider. Right now other artists make me cook and think and wonder more at the moment.

chatsandreacts

Ugh I hate that this is how this video has come across because that couldn’t be further from the truth about how we feel! Love and joy and happiness is absolutely vulnerable and beautiful! I don’t think because it’s positive that means it’s less deep. I think there are other factors to this album feeling more at arms length. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing!!! This album offers such a different feeling and thats so fresh. We wanted to open up the conversation thats all. And now feels like we are completely miss understood.

ton

Thanks for responding. I’m sorry for misunderstanding and not having a go at all. Just a feeling that this album is seem as shallow and lacking vulnerability when I feel it’s just because it’s not dark. I loved your take of depth without darkness but then this vid felt like lack of darkness was now interpreted as lack of depth somehow. Hoping that the incredible depth continues to be unravelled over time though. Maybe the docuseries will help it be better understood too.

Floran

First of all I love this video format and I would love to see more of them for other albums! It just brings up such interesting talking points and differences in how we view things. For me this album has a lot of feeling. I agree that 1989 has a similar, more distant viewpoint. But for me the key difference with Showgirl is: in 1989 she’s trying (let’s be honest) to be cool. In Showgirl she’s so mature and herself, just a little mischievous. But she’s not forcing a part of herself down or away, it’s all there, just covered in last night’s glitter.

Rachel McFadyen

Since we're talking about this lyric!! One of my first fathomings of Wood was that she's chosen to write Daisy's bare naked (as opposed to 'daisies' which would be grammatically correct if we were only talking about flowers).... I was so curious why she wrote it like this then I fathomed its the cleverest double meaning. Daisy IS bare naked, I was distraught gives images of cheating exes, alongside the flower picking imagery!! And she does the same thing with Penny's unlucky.....I just have always loved that those are both girls names (and are written that way) and also super popular superstitions!!!

chatsandreacts

Yes Ash!! Completely agree and thank you for not misunderstanding our intent with this video. Love what you said šŸ„°šŸ‘

alex

Love you two chickens 🄰🄰

Rachel McFadyen

Chickens i truly dont think thats how you've come across at all! You guys always put your points across so well - people are bound to misunderstand (as you know) but its not reflective of anything you have done. Its very clear how you feel about this albumā¤ļø

chatsandreacts

This is an amazing comment Danielle. And so much of what you are saying is genuinely exactly how we felt after hearing this album for the first time. Honestly I think the few days leading up to this video I had been reading up on more of the criticism towards this album and was trying to unpack that and understand it in my own mind. I feel so misunderstood that you and some of these comments are implying we need the ā€œteaā€ to feel a Taylor album is deep, or that we need sadness to feel vulnerability. That is absolutely not true… My example of this album MAYBE feeling less ā€œdeepā€ sometimes is how in some of the love songs there is a lot of content about the outside world. Like Wishlist and Honey. The bridges in both of those songs make me feel so much, whereas the rest of the song feels a bit more light, and easy breezy and not about the relationship. But overall I do find both of those songs such touching concepts. There is just an element of distance and yes maybe less specific detail. But that’s got nothing to do with the Tea… that’s why I used the begin again lyric as an example. Anyway, not necessarily a bad thing but something I noticed and wanted to explore more so I couldn’t also understand it better.

chatsandreacts

We were also saying that in comparison to midnights and TTPD, maybe it’s not as deep. We never said it doesn’t have depth or honesty…This album has sooo much to take from it and we literally spent over 2 hours talking about the date of Ophelia when we filmed our breakdown šŸ˜‚ Taylor is definitely not struggling in this album which is amazing and I reject the notion that that’s why WE maybe feel it’s less deep. I personally don’t need that ā€˜sad struggling’ feeling to be presence to connect with her songs. I think there are other reasons as to why some of these songs feel more surface level. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Ash94

I think most of us are always very clear about your intent! Love the space you create for us. It's frustrating when some people seem in a rush to bring people down just because they slightly disagree with something. Sending love all the way from Manchester, UK! xx

chatsandreacts

Ahhhh Em!!! Thank you for getting us and our intent with this video. And wow I couldn’t agree more with how you put this into words, your point about the characterisation in ET a s father figure is šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼ and the Wishlist comment is EXACTLY how I feel. Omg thank you for wording it like that šŸ˜‚šŸ‘ you are a superior HUMAN!!

Beth

Watching a second time makes me realise how hard it is to take everything in properly a first listen. Your conversation around 43 minutes in is so spot onšŸ‘ŒšŸ½ I think it’s been easier for Taylor to be vulnerable once she has started to move past a relationship/coat it in storytelling if she’s still in it. This is really the first time she’s writing about a relationship she’s currently in, that is actually safe and secure. And so maybe she’s just not ready to bare all about travis because she’s still SO in it, she’s keeping it more for herself, and good for her I guess? And she knows she will be in it for a long time, and so she has time for that stuff to surface.

Kayla Rowberry

I totally agree that maybe this album isn't as lyrically dense as some of her others, but also I think that, in and of itself, reveals something about the nature of her relationship with Travis Kelce. When she wrote her poem about tortured poets and talked about orbiting Joe's planet and some stars never aligning, it indicates when you're in a relationship you really have to fight to make work, the amount of rationalizing and justifying and sometimes outright lying to yourself gets really complicated. I see that happening on all of the many songs she wrote about the conflicts that she had with Joe and how she continually took the blame for those conflicts. "Hey it's all me in my head. I'm the one that burned us down." It was an opposites-attract situation, which can be a really complimentary combo or a really challenging feat. I think with Travis, they have so many similarities that maybe for the first time in a long time, it doesn't feel difficult to be with her partner. Perhaps the lyrical simplicity represents just how simple and easy their dynamic has been. I find this album so relatable because I found my person when I was 18 (I'm the same age as Taylor), and being with him 16 years later, still feels easy. And our dynamic is simple. It really is like in Eldest Daughter when she talks about how she thought that she would "never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when [she] was young." Because finding a partner that isn't hard to be with is like those effortless friendships you had as a child where you could just have so much fun together without overanalyzing, without rationalizing, without justifying, without fighting to feel understood. The fact that you were both children was enough.

Foxy_Tatty

I thought purple too! Cause purple signifies royalty šŸ’œ

Esther Newman

Watching again and I love this video format! Also I do really appreciate your openness and nuanced takes - you guys always make me think about things differently, thank you for creating a space for that ā¤ļø Anyway what this also made me think about is that I really do think Taylor chose a different angle for this album for a big reason - as she said in her interview with Zane Lowe for Showgirl, she's thinking about her legacy. I think she's purposefully made Showgirl more accessible for non-fans and the wider public, and it's worked as you can tell by the success (soooo many people in my life are loving this album of all ages who don't usually listen to Taylor). Not to mention, she's listened to the feedback from TTPD and reacted to it, probably similarly to how she reacted post-Red and for 1989. It's part of the reason why she's at the top of her game: she never gives us the same thing twice and she's always looking ahead to building as an artist and a legacy act. It all makes so much sense since we'll soon be celebrating all her success again with the Eras Tour doc, then entering the 20th anniversary of Debut/her start as an artist and potentially her 13th album

Anuradha Srinivasan

I feel this. With Joe, and Matty she couldn’t really be honest with us or herself in her songs about how she was feeling. Joe couldn’t take it and she was writing coded love letters to Matty for half her career. She needed metaphors and similes and roundabout ways to say what she was actually feeling. Happens in one-sided relationships all the time. Of course that was so interesting for us to dissect, because we didn’t know the original intention behind the words. When she is able to be true to herself, the person she loves and her fans, she doesn’t need another metaphor and it’s simple enough. It’s the pure joy and peace that stability and steadiness brings. I am very happy for her, and I love this version of her.

Alyssa Zawicki

Bonny’s 1989 rant was Emily’s ā€œHello darkness, my old friendā€ moment šŸ˜…

Ewa šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ¦°šŸ‡µšŸ‡±

This album was a first one of Taylor's for me, when it was sooo easy to learn the lyrics. With her other albums it was much harder. But I think the simplicity of TLOAS was a decision - it reflects pure love without cages, secret gardens and labyrinths. I personally adore more poetic language of hers, but I can't blaim her for being this happy.

Kelsi Ford

THIS yes im obsessed with this lyric because of it

Emma

I would love it if you guys did this for every album! I would be SO sat!!!

Heidi Muller

This album is melody driven. The vibes are emaculate.

Sarah

Just for the record, Zach DID say those things, particularly that Taylor's lost her intelligence because she's with Travis and that she's pissing all over her legacy for a basketball hoop. There were a couple of large comment threads in the main chat about his insane rants he had on his Discord about the album and about Taylor as a person. I unfollowed him after seeing the comments and his response to the criticism his comments received.

Brittany DeLara

Dang, not a single thing in this video gave me pause. Not at all sure what some are upset about. I guess I just understood y’all. šŸ¤—

Camila Dejesus

Oh I see! I misinterpreted that conversation, and that was the only reason I could think of for it feeling a little different but I’m excited to see your opinions on why it might be different. This was written during the beginning part and then I saw you guys started to break down more how less like visually descriptive she is about Travis and THAT being part of why it’s surfaced. I can see that point and it actually helped me pinpoint what you meant <3

KyraB

I don’t think it is necessarily wrong to say that TLOAS is not as deep as previous albums and that is not a bad thing. I think it was pretty clear that it wasn’t Taylor’s goal to make another TTPD. Most people think of depth as it applies to Taylor mostly in terms of sad, depressing, heartbreaking verbose lyrics filled with potentially cryptic meanings that you have to spend time dissecting to really get a true sense of the meaning behind it. I personally think you can have depth without darkness and I find a good amount of depth in the lyrics throughout TLOAS. I however think there are also many ways something can have depth and people get stuck on lyrics alone when thinking about music in terms of depth. I think her very specific choices in vernacular, choices in themes and styles of songs throughout the album have depth. I mean my favorite example of this is probably on what many people might consider lyrically the least deep song on the album Wood. Lyrically that song is fun, full of double entendres and straightforward. However that song cheekiness in the lyrics is very burlesque and vaudevillian which is a quintessential era of showgirls in our history and she plays into that with song adding a layer of depth and detail to the entire theme of the album itself.

ems 𓆑 . ā‚ŠĖš ゚. ✧

Oh man, I'm honestly just glad to have helped you feel understood. There is always space for nuance with art! Also, calling me a superior human? On a Saturday?? How dare you, I have things to do this weekend and now I'm just floating. BRB, basking in your compliment for the next 3-5 business days šŸ™

Nicole

I feel this way, too. I could listen to TTPD allll day while working. With this album, I have to stop it or change to something else or I can’t concentrate. It’s so hype my brain can’t focus on anything else šŸ˜…

Deb

I'm sorry, perhaps the grammar rules are different in different countries? Daisy is the correct word for a single flower. "Daisy's" is a contraction of Daisy IS bare. (language rule: An apostrophe (ā€˜) is a punctuation mark that creates a contraction or shows ownership for a possessive noun. A daisy flower is a noun, and she is picking the petals off of a daisy. if she meant plural she would have said daisies ARE bare. And the daisy is NOT showing possession of being bare, so a contraction of IS is the only grammatically correct interpretation.

Lauren Brit Rey

Rachel McFadyen

Exactly! Daisy is bare naked instead of multiple daisies bare naked. For me the possessive 's is personifying and whilst yes could technically be used to describe a single daisy, the more natural use (and more interesting choice for this lyric in my opinion) is to use it to reference a woman named Daisy. That way the lyric does both - the flower metaphor of daisies stripped of their petals, and the more literal using of the name to describe a naked woman. Both of them then tie into 'i was distraught/he loves me not' in their own ways! Its the fact that she does the same thing with Penny's vs pennies that solidifies it for me! Rather than one or the other, its both

Aloha Record Sargent

Yes, well said! And I’m sorry if this comment came off as rude or flippant. In re-reading my words, I see how they sound a bit too defensive. Probably a trauma response from all the online hate we’ve had to deal with over the past month when it comes to this album! Not anything having to do with you two.

Lady Lauren

Nothing but love for your girlies, don't let the haters get you down! You are allowed to feel how you FEEL about this album! We know you love Taylor no matter whatā¤ļø

JoyR

I had the same favorite lyrics!!

Jamie Lincoln

I loved that, too! I never understood that lyric but Bonnie saying it like that made it all click and this is why I love these girlies!!

Jamie Lincoln

Wait, I love this. This is EXACTLY what this album is.

Drey Szabó

OMG I HAVE NOT FATHOMED UNTIL NOW WHATTTTT

Jamie Lincoln

I believe they said TAYLOR feels safe enough with jack to be at her most vulnerable. TAYLOR can write her most vulnerable lyrics with a friend, such as jack. Not jack writing the work… Kind of weird you listened to it twice and missed that.

Marina

I really needed the conversation you started about what feels new about this album. You made me feel soon seen ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ I completely agree with what you said about fathoming this album, that it somehow feels different from the other albums. I have been a fan since Fearless, and I’ve NEVER felt like listening to previous albums at least within the first 7-8 months of a new release. These weeks I was a little bit confused because even though I love TLOAS I felt that I was already in the mood of listening to Evermore or even TTPD. And of course, it’s not a bad thing, but there is certainly something different about this album. Also the number of tracks is shorter than ever, so that must be a part of it as well. I’m really excited to explore this new feeling with you ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

KyraB

I also think this album offers a lot of people the opportunity to explore and look at depth in different ways than they previously have. I think when it comes to Taylor’s music especially since folklore people have been so focused on deciphering or decoding the hidden meanings that solving the mystery became equated to depth. This album is very straightforward on most songs. We know exactly what she is singing about and then she proceeded to confirm that in all her interviews. We didn’t learn anything new about her relationship with Travis or how safe and secure she feels in that relationship and for me that is actually an amazing thing. That means her life is not a secret or shrouded in mystery. I love that she is living and loving out loud with a partner who loves her just as loudly and we get to be witness to whatever they choose to share of that. I have said it before in other comments but I personally found this album to have quite a bit of depth. I love this style album just as much as a folklore or TTPD. I also know that since Taylor herself confirmed she is not going to stop making music anytime soon that we of course will get the lyrically dense, verbose, metaphor laden songs again. I actually look forward to what comes out a loved up emotionally supported Taylor in terms of that style song. I think we will get some of the best love songs ever written and of course as a girl who has said she loves sad songs those will not go away either. She doesn’t have to be currently sad to write a heartbreaker but after her last run of albums I totally understand and appreciate the focus on happiness and good vibes for this album.

TScout

I can’t see Elizabeth Taylor as anything other than a deep, rich, warm (possibly even velvet) royal purple. šŸ’œ With an undertone of burgundy. šŸ· Violet, but make it expensive. šŸ’°šŸ’œšŸ˜†

TScout

I can’t wait to hear your breakdowns. Your initial reactions are alway welcome and cherished joy-bombs, but the re-fathomings, the more nuanced examinations of songs with increasingly familiar eyes, are my favorite. ā¤ļø

Christine

Like to add, my comment above was my opinion, and not trying to say in any way that Bon/Em insinuated in any way the album is not deep. I’m loving the album! It’s different than prior albums which is not a bad thing. She keeps us on our toes! Haha

MamaPatricia

Elizabeth Taylor reveals her continued insecurity about her love relationship. Look at ā€œAll my white diamonds and lovers are forever in the papers, on the screens and in THEIR minds. ā€œ Swifties, podcasters, even sportscaster immediately labeled TNT as the real deal, last forever, love for the ages but in ET Taylor expresses that she isnt as secure and wonders if her love life will be like ET who had 7+ faulty relationships. Pretty Deep and Revealing in my opinion.

MamaPatricia

The white diamonds are forever I believe is from ads for Eliz. Taylor perfume White Diamonds which flooded print and Tv ads at the time. Im old enough to remember seeing them.

Julia

This eldest daughter lyric makes me think about mastermind 😭 "I have been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness. I've been dying just from trying to seem cool" "No one wanted to play with me as a little kid. So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since. To make them love me and make it seem effortless. This is the first time I've felt the need to confess"

Off the back of TTPD, I feel like this was the best direction she could go. Upbeat and lighthearted! ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ You have to keep in mind when she wrote this album. Her relationship has obviously grown so much since then! I bet the next album is more ā€œdeepā€. Love your lyric choices!

Ella

From ā€˜then glowing like the end of a cigarette, WOW’ I get a sense of the paparazzi shouting for her to come out, and then when she does they briefly get stopped in their tracks and are glowing because they are in awe of her. I think from the showgirl’s point of view they then look all ā€˜lit up’ and in awe of her, but it’s easy to get drawn in by that and then burnt by the end of the cigarette, so it’s like their adoration is dangerous, if that makes sense? I love what you said about it being the camera flashes too! I think that also ties in well with this way of taking it.

Ella

Also would love you to do this for other albums!!

Emma

Ally ā¤ļø

I loved this topic for a video. So here are my favorite lyrics across the album, which I love so much! At the risk that no one will care what an old lady thinks, here I go: Ophelia- has to be ā€œkeep it šŸ’Æ on the land, the sea, the sky. Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibesā€¦ā€ it makes me think of all the different t game day content we received in the beginning of her WAG era. Also of the beautiful photo shoot pap shots on Lake Como in Italy… it’s such a perfect transition song from TTPD. Elizabeth Taylor - ā€œall my white diamonds and lovers are foreverā€¦ā€ I mean the way she referenced SO MUCH in that tiny phrase! - the signature perfumes (White Diamonds and Wonderstruck) - the 60s James Bond level cultural iconitude (ā€œDiamonds are Foreverā€) - the media’s slut shaming of both these women - the fact that both she and ET are BEJEWELED! Opalite - I have to give it to our iconic Austin Swift, ā€œā€¦my brother used to call it eating out of the trashā€¦ā€ I literally laughed out loud when I heard that… and immediately thought of Matty 😬 I guess it takes itself out every time. So subtle, and so devastating a lyric. Just the tiniest bit of shade from our petty Taylor. Father Figure - ā€œThis empire belongs to me… Leave it with me. I protect the familyā€¦ā€ Exultant! Hard won! By the time we get to the end of this song, that shift is so welcome!! What a song. The other thing I’ll say is the fact that Taylor credited George Michael as a cowriter, made me take another look at his song. It fits Taylor and Travis so well… some of those lyrics are so beautiful. It brought me to tears. The added dimension that she credited him as a writer rather than sampling the master, and made an end run around the label to ensure any profits went directly to his estate: Chef’s kiss! šŸ’‹ Eldest Daughter - For me, this song absolutely is so vulnerable. My current favorite lyric: ā€œI’m not a bad bitch, and this isn’t savage, but I’m never gonna let you down… I’m never gonna leave you outā€¦ā€ people come for this lyric as ā€œcringeā€ but as you all touched on, that’s the point. She’s never been a natural… but Taylor taking what love is for her: Showing up when it’s important (milestone birthdays, championship games requiring last minute international flights anyone?) and including your partner in your life (no odd men out!). Choosing those two things, that represent the carelessness and exclusion that have repeatedly wounded her, and encapsulate what ā€œloveā€ is to her (include her in the punchline of that esoteric or dirty joke, I’ll save you a seat at the table), was just so deep - the music swells and I tear up every time! Ruin the Friendship - I have spoken about my favorite lyric in the comments before as well, and it’s the outro: ruin the friendship; answer the questions. Have no regrets and nothing to keep you wondering ā€œwhat if?ā€ The album is about what was going on during the tour behind the scenes in her life. This seminal event in her life as a young woman fully informed who she is today, and who she was with Joe and then with Matty as those two relationships ran their course in very different ways. It even addresses why she was willing to give Trav a shot so soon after such total devastation! All of those scenarios she has spoken of (some at length!) in TTPD. Questions answered; no regrets that she didn’t try hard enough or shoot her shot… and as she said on New Heights: Now she knows. Actually Romantic - Starting strong with boring Barbie… I mean, it’s just so cutting. It had me so gagged. It must be said, it’s the big dogs in the yard that trigger the little anxious dogs… Wi$h Li$t - my favorite lyric is from the bridge ā€œI made wishes on all of the starsā€¦ā€ it just brings back so many themes of stars and fates and wishes in her prior music it gives me Peter Pan, Mastermind, Pinocchio, Snow on the Beach, Long Story Short, Joe and Matty, the Prophecy… I mean it is like a codex of so may songs in so few words and to land it with feeling like her wishes were answered at last? Masterful! Wood - I love this song! I found the lyrical D of it all a bit much initially, but I love how another commenter here said that it’s bringing the innuendo like Mae West - very showgirl… also, go girl! Good for you! Favorite lyric? DEFINATELY the opening lines, ā€œDaisy’s bare naked (vulnerable, out there for all to see it! Brings back Daisy May from YOYOK as well), I was distraught (Down Bad). He loves me not (Joe), he loves me not (Matty). Penny’s unlucky I took it back (Joe), then stepped on a crack (Matty) and the black cat laughed (I mean Charli? Gabrietta? Take your pick). Genius! CANCELLED!! I love the Rep perspective turned on its head to be more in her rear view mirror - like: ā€œOh, I can help you navigate this, babe. Been there, done that.ā€ I guess if I had to pick favorite lyrics, they would be all the questions/reasons that they cancel you, ā€œDid you make a joke only a man could?ā€ ā€œWere you just too smug for your own good?ā€ Like she is literally pointing out that they want women to stay in their place… to rise, sure, but never to reign. It’s giving Sophia Isella’s ā€œEveryone Supports Womenā€ and I am here for it. Honey- of course it has to be the pull back that Bonny mentioned, and the reference to late night phone calls from smallest men messing with her mind and smaller men diminishing her and not acknowledging that she is BEJEWELED by using words and tone that twist the knife. I mean… we simply must THANK GOD for Travis loving her so sincerely and so well. TLOASG - I will never get over her including the end of the Eras Tour. I cry every time… what a moment in time. I am forever grateful for every live-streamer, every one’s TikToks, stories, and IG posts that brought every show into our homes as a communal experience. That was such lightening in a bottle. This song is right up there for me with LGAD for that reason… Thank you again for the prompt to dig a little deeper. I love this album so much. Grateful for the acoustic versions she chose. They are stunning! šŸ„‚ ✨

Your thunder like a drum fathoming blew my mind!!! Love your lyrical insights ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Here post reading your recent post about being crapped on by some brats. And i'll just add my .02 cents. DEPTH... to me (as someone who studies embodiment, relationships and polarity) is where the UNDOING is. The undoing is messy, dark, BEAUTIFUL, chaotic, and sometimes gut-wrenching. AND... one would cease to exist as a human if they didn't go through every SEASON. Depth is the autumn and winter. It is magic, yes. But SO IS the spring and summer where we embrace LIGHT and GROWTH and momentum. It would be... literally CRAZY to have a WHOLE human experience and create art from only one season. There is high value in BOTH. And i think THAT is the part of the conversation that is missing. We MUST have BOTH and both are perfect. Aside from 'Ruin the Friendship', no, there's not an obvious 'depth' to this album. Because depth on an obvious level is from some level of being/having some amount of darkness/underground/underwater-flowing with the tides, and she is just not there in this moment (nor should she be). However, Taylors lyricism and songwriting skills (in all areas) are still very much there. It is still CLEVER, complex and real. It's just FUN and people seem to have freaked out over it, as if she forgot how to be a poet. Nope, the poetry is still there. It's just happy for the moment. It can't be winter all year. Let a girl bloom.

My 2 favorite lyrics on this record are probably : - "Do you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins ?" - "Your thoughtless ambition sparked the ignition / On foolish decisions, which led to misguided visions" (this lyric, in this rhyming scheme, actually reminds me a lot of that Lana lyric in Hope is a dangerous thing "There's a new revolution, a loud evolution that I saw / Born of confusion and quiet collusion of which mostly I've known")

Jenny

Hey Kasey! Really sorry this turned so sour you definitely didn’t ask for that or deserve it. For context, people are super opinionated about the swiftologist on here and that often manifests in being judgemental of people who choose to watch him, which is ridiculous. It’s not a crime to watch him and doesn’t mean you think any less of Taylor. I personally am not really watching him anymore due to some of the things he’s said that are referenced in this thread, but I have absolutely no right to judge or dictate how other people engage with his content. There’s actually a ton of overlap between his viewers and Chats and Reacts viewers. Keep watching what you enjoy, I’m confident that doesn’t make you a bad person šŸ˜‚šŸ«¶

Here are my favourite lyrics: 1: ā€˜Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes’ ✨ 2: ā€˜All the right guys promised they’d stay, under bright lights they withered away, but you bloooooom’ 3: ā€˜My brother used to call it eating out of the trash, it’s never gonna last’ (love an Austin insight!! Also what a great analogy šŸ˜‚) 4: ā€˜Said they wanna see you rise, they don’t want you to reign’ (the card cancelled lyric was a close second for me!) 5: ā€˜Cause I thought that I’d never find that beautiful beautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were young’ 🄹 I also think ā€˜every eldest daughter was the first lamb to the slaughter’ is genius! 6: ā€˜Glistening grass from September rain’ OR ā€˜my advice is to always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your life’ 7: ā€˜Hadn’t thought of you in a long time, but you keep sending me funny valentines’ 8: ā€˜I thought I had it right once, twice, but I did not, you caught me off my guard’ 9: ā€˜Daisy’s bare naked I was distraught, he loves me not, he loves me not’ OR ā€˜new heights of manhood’ (in the more innocent sense šŸ˜‚) 10: ā€˜I salute you if you’re much too much to handle’ 11: ā€˜Redefine all of those blues when you say, honey’ OR ā€˜buy the paint in the colour of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life, honey’ 12: ā€˜Wouldn’t have it any other way’ OR ā€˜then glowing like the end of a cigarette, wow’

MamaPatricia

Eldest Daughter fav lyric is what she is saying to Travis IRL ā€œ every youngest child felt they were raised up in the wild but now you are home.ā€ as an eldest daughter Taylor is uniquely equipped to provide the shelter and attention that a youngest child (Travis) was short changed.

MamaPatricia

Fav lyric Wish List, ā€œ have a couple kids, got the whole block, looking like you.ā€ Kylie Kelce says all four of her daughters look like her husband Jason Kelce so its cute to think TNT will also produce Kelce clones and Taylor is so over the moon for Travis that Taylor is on board for that.

MamaPatricia

Wood ā€œHis love was the key that opened my thighs.ā€ Taylor does not make mistakes. Keep in mind that she is writing from the perspective of a showgirl. And show girls are flirty, naughty, have ribald sense of humor. The lyric is delivered with a wink. But also a blush because hey its Taylor of course the lyric sounds awkward coming from her. its fun and funny!!

MamaPatricia

Honey: I’m home, we can play house, we can bed down, pick me up (like at Coachella), whats the plan?ā€œ this lyric sounds like a sneak peek into their lives. Sounds Like things they are actually saying to each other and have been since really early in their relationship because they both fell hard super fast. Keep in mind she wrote these songs during the tour likely after they’ve only been dating for maybe six months but they started ā€œplaying houseā€ very quickly

MamaPatricia

Life of a showgirl: fav lyric ā€œthe witches who wish I’d hurry up and die, but I am immortal now baby dolls, I couldn’t if I tried.ā€. YES, Taylor!

MamaPatricia

imagine growing up with the general consensus being that your brother Jason is ā€œthe smart oneā€ which by default makes Travis the stupid one. And with typical family dysfunction, as a child you buy into it and clearly to me Taylor is correcting that perception for Travis. You saw it in her new heights podcast interview. It’s a very unfair but common family dynamic to label children and sometimes by default. You get a really ugly label attached to you that alters your self perception erroneously

Ella

Loved reading this comment!

sarah

no one's saying we're entitlted to every detail of taylor's love life but when that level of vulnerability has been the foundation of her career for more than a decade, the absence of it is glaringly obvious. therefore it's not delusional or entitled for fans to point that out. if anything it goes to show how it's taylor's storytelling that people have always connected with. noticing a shift in her music doesn't make ppl ungrateful or dismissive, ESPECIALLY in this context, where bonny and em have proven a million times that they're in taylor's corner. this is what real fans do... discuss and engage... this is literally chats and reacts! p.s. i actually think 1989 has more depth than the life of a showgirl

Mike

Taylor’s storytelling is still very much present on this album. Tracks like Father Figure, Eldest Daughter, Ruin The Friendship, and even Cancelled reference her life / are incredibly vulnerable in a lot of ways. Just because she’s not using specifics or talking in flowery language, doesn’t mean there’s a lack of vulnerability. And even if there was: again, expecting that on every album just because you’ve gotten it in the past does reek of entitlement, no matter how you want to spin it. I never said Bonny and Emily weren’t in Taylor’s corner. I know they are. I just thought it was an odd criticism coming from them. Also, if you think 1989 has any more depth than Showgirl then that tells me you haven’t properly fathomed Showgirl. Lol

Breezy Bumbles

Being a lifetime Taylor Swift fan is so fascinating to me. Because EVERY album is a completely different experience than all of her other ones. And naturally, you’re going to gravitate to certain ones more than others and that’s always changing based on your own experiences in life and fathoming things that you didn’t before. I knew before Showgirl came out that it wasn’t going to be my favourite. And that is okay. That’s what it has always been like and it’s awesome! It’s still an AMAZING perfect album that I will listen to for the rest of time and it doesn’t have to be my personal favourite to just dance and sing my heart out!

Breezy Bumbles

Also pearls are formed because something is irritating the oyster like a grain of sand. So Taylor takes the hard things and turns them into beautiful art. Like a pearl.

Breezy Bumbles

The one lyric that makes me emotional every time is ā€œthis empire belongs to meā€!!!!

Just wanting to bring you girls some positive vibes & love! šŸ’• I would absolutely love and welcome concept video for each album! Here are my favorite lyrics from each song! 1. I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I right before you lit my sky up 2. All the right guys promised they'd stay under bright lights, they withered away but you bloom… or be my NY when Hollywood hates me 3. Don't you sweat it, baby, it's alright you were dancing through the lightning strikes oh, so sleepless in the onyx night, but now, the sky is opalite 4. This empire belongs to me leave it with me, I protect the family *I get chills every time when I hear this line.* 5. Pretty soon, I learned cautious discretion when your first crush crushes something kind 6. And my advice is always answer the question better that than to ask it all your life.. should've kissed you anyway 7. I mind my business, God’s my witness that I don’t provoke it *the rhyming and they way it sounds and flows šŸ¤ŒšŸ¼* 8. They want that freedom, living off the grid they want those three dogs that they call their kids *as someone who has two dogs that I call my kids 🤣* 9. It's you and me forever dancing in the dark all over me, it's understood, I ain't got to knock on wood… or Seems to be that you and me, we make our own luck a bad sign is all good, I ain’t gotta knock on wood 10. Can't you see my infamy loves company? Now they've broken you like they've broken me, but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp 11. Buy the paint in the color of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life, honey 12. I'm married to the hustle and now I know the life of a showgirl, babe and I'll never know another. Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace, sequins are forever and now I know the life of a showgirl, babe wouldn't have it any other way

Riley H

I think on the point of having fathomed the album, it makes sense to me that things click more easily. Shes said it herself, she's in the same place as she was when she created it. Compared to an album like ttpd or midnights, which did take longer to comprehend because we as the audience only had so much information. At the current point, she doesn't have to dance around or be as cryptic with her feelings and it shows in the more direct lyrics. I personally enjoy the puzzle but don't think it makes an album an less interesting or "good"

Riley H

Also, I do think she tells us so much about their relationship, but the biggest thing I get from it is that it's not complicated. He makes her feel alive and she doesn't have to question things and theyre on the same page about the future 🄹 anyways, just my thoughts ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

Okay bear with me cause I have many a thoughts and a lot of song I picked at least 2 lyrics (APOLOGIES!!) The Fate of Ophelia -Color first. I think this songs feel white, like the color of Ophelia’s dress in the painting, and the one Taylor wore in the music video Lyrics: -And if you’d never come for me, I might’ve drowned in melancholy This feels like a call back to Lavender Haze (you never really read into my melancholia) I just think it’s a perfect lyric to sum up that the relationship she has with Travis is lighthearted in contrast with past relationships -But love was a cold bed full of scorpions, the venom stole her sanity I love the link to the actual story of Ophelia and I like how Taylor’s sort of saying this is the fate he (Travis) saved me from. Like I wouldn’t just be heartbroken but I’d also have been driven insane. Elizabeth Taylor Color: Dark Ruby Red with glitter And I always imagine Taylor with that dark bob with the bangs Lyrics: You’re only as hot as your last hit, baby This just really felt like a direct punch to the media, like you’re only good if you continue to make good things. Like how the rise of socia media has led people to jump from one masterpiece to another, if feels vulnerable in a way, that she feels like if she doesn’t put out album after album she’ll eventually fade away. Opalite Color: obvi opalite, like yall said that blue/ white shimmery color that sort of reflects like( or like specifically that rainbow you see on your wall when the light shines just right) Lyrics: you were dancing through the lightning strikes I agree with everything you guys said. It’s just such good imagery for the idea of making your own happened and being happy even during bad times -But failure brings you freedom I love this because a lot of people can see a relationship that ended as a sort of failure but she’s saying, our past relationships that ā€œfailedā€ actually made us free and eventually led us to each other Father Figure Color: definitely brown, just like yall said, leather, liquor, that sort of dark brown chair you’d find in an office Lyrics: This love is pure profit Saying that their relationship,(Scott & Taylor), in hindsight, was only a cash grab for him and that he was only going to be good to her until he didn’t need her anymore is so sad -this empire belongs to me Her saying this after she bought her masters back !! So iconic, like that’s so badass that she can say that the empire is now mine and the love I had for you that you were using to make money, has dried. Eldest Daughter Color: I think Royal purple Lyrics: so many traitors, smooth operators This lyric stood out to me because I take it as her saying that there were many people in her life who smooth talked their way in, and made her feel good who ended up betraying her and letting her down or leaving and she’s promising to never do that to Travis THE WHOLE BRIDGE!!! But specifically ā€œbeautiful life that shimmers that innocent light back like when we were youngā€ This album to me feels like this line. The songs are the innocent light that she’s been waiting for since she was young. They aren’t ā€œas deepā€ as past work because she’s shimmering in that innocent light Ruin the Friendship Color: Exactly same thought as yall, green, like thy r color of that piano Lyrics: this whole song fucked me up honestly, one of my favs, if not my number one off the album but the lyrics ā€œgoodbye, and we’ll never know whyā€ is SO sickening to the soul. To say that we’ll never know why, like why we had to say goodbye or why we never tried. It feels so opened ended like there’s so many things they’ll never know but they have to say goodbye anyways. I’m sick Actually Romantic Color: I got mustard yellow from this one. But honestly any color that muted in that mustard way Lyrics: It’s honestly lovely all the effort you put in One the sarcasm dripping from this song is so delicious but this lyrics stands out to me because of another lyric in Honey which we will get to. Wish List Color: I think of green & silver like money Lyrics: I made wishes on all of the stars This lyric on first listen immediately brought me back to The Prophecy and how finding a love like this has been on her wish list for a while and now she finally has it Wood Color: I think of like tree bark 😭 that color or like hard wood floors Lyrics: Girl I don’t need to catch the bouquet, to know a hard rock is on the way To write this lyric before the proposal and then to release it after you actually have the rock, ICONIC, also I love the double entendre…I lowkey fuck with the dick jokes 🤭😭 -I took him back, then stepped on a crack, the black cat laughed I just love the way that flows and the imagery I get, also my sister has a black cat that I LOVE so I always think of him Cancelled Color: Either dark red or Dark blue or like the grey color of Hades from Hercules Lyrics:-But they’d already picked out your grave and hearse I just think about allll the people who come out of the woodworks when someone gets ā€œcancelledā€ and is suddenly like ā€œis now a good time to say I never like her?ā€ Or ā€œso glad I never liked himā€ like it annoyed me so much how people just pray on the downfall of others, and how some people seem to be waiting for the perfect time to shit on someone -Or bring a tiny violin to a knife fight No matter how much you beg people to listen if someone bigger or stronger or more influential than you says something about you, people are going to believe it. It feels very rep coded to me in that way Honey Color: honey of course šŸÆšŸÆšŸÆ Lyrics: redefine all of those blues when you say Honey Feels like a call back to all the time she talked about Joe’s blues or her blues or even blue in regard to Joe’s eyes and saying that Travis has changed the way that color feels for her, or even maybe the way she will continue to use blue in her writing -When anyone called me ā€œlovelyā€ they were finding ways not to praise me but you say it like you’re in awe of me First of all SO CUTE and second, this I feel relates well to actually romantic where she is also using lovely in a sarcastic way only to say here that the was Travis uses lively has changed the way she uses and feels about that word The Life of a Showgirl Color: I think of glittery orange like Taylor’s orange Vegas showgirl outfit in The Fate of Ophelia MV, I also think that when she says ā€œglowing like the end of a cigaretteā€ she’s talking about Kitty coming out in an orange outfit(like in the MV) because cigarettes are orange when their burning I also feel like the way she uses dog metaphors kind of in ā€œpacked in with the autograph hounds barking her nameā€ she also doing it with ā€œwaited by the stage doorā€ and ā€œburning like the end of a cigaretteā€ because I feel like at night or while a show is running that’s were people would go to smoke cigarettes so she’s using the setting of this part of the song to also describe the way Kitty looked coming out and I think that is GENIUS Lyrics: Same as Em but that whole run of ā€œI took her pearls of wisdom, hung them from my neck, I laid my dues with every bruise I knew what to expectā€ feels so important to her, in saying I knew what it would be like going in, I’ve paid my dues, I did what I needed and I made it because this was my dream and I wanted to make it work -Pain hidden by the lipstick and lace This feels like a call back to the Eras tour and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, and the whole idea of being heartbroken or sad or sick and still getting on stage every night and killing it Also honorable mention to the outro of TLOAS before it goes into the recording of the crowd. When Taylor says Hey Kitty, thank you for the lovely bouquet, and Sabrina says now I make my money being pretty and witty. I feels like a full circle moment that Kitty comes back and is backstage or whatever at one of Taylor or Sabrina’s show and she’s brung a bouquet of flowers for them and they’re saying thank you to Kitty for the wisdom and a knowledge that allowed them to live their dreams which I love and makes this the perfect album closer!!!! Okayyy that was so long 😭😭 love yall so much, you always have the most superior things to sayyyā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļø

JessF

"'cause I thought that I'd never find that beautiful, beautiful life that shimmers, that beautiful light back, like when we were young" absolutely floors me every time.

Sarah

I loved reading your thoughts, so well written and I have a lot of the same fave lyrics and feelings abt the songs as you!

Masha

Honestly, the general discourse around this album has left me quite confused, but i guess as Taylor said we all meet art where we are currently in life and that influences heavily our perception of it. Personally, i find so much depth in tloas, and I don’t really agree with the idea that she is keeping us at arm’s length either. For me it’s the opposite. But I do agree that there is something new about this Taylor and this album in particular, for me this is the first ( of many i hope) album we got from healed Taylor. This is the first time she is writing in ā€œreal timeā€ about events that are not clouded in anxiety, there is no deep seethed self-loathing, guilt. We haven’t had that, not really. Reputation was marred by horrific events that preceded it and they influenced the beginning of her relationship with joe (from this perspective, almost trauma bonding for her and both for us as a fandom). Afterwards we all know what happened, culminating in the complete mental breakdown in ttpd. None of those albums portrayed a healthy relationships( and as we know none of the albums before rep did either). So i truly understand why this album is so jarring for many, we are not used to this Taylor. And I think we as humans tend to gravitate more towards sadness either because it allows us to vent of it allows us to feel better about our situations. She doesn’t have to wrap her emotions in 13 layers of metaphors because the truth is no longer painful or inconvenient ( for her and us as listeners). This Taylor is unapologetic about her fame and her desires, she is at the point in her life where she is tired of making herself smaller to appease unworthy men in her life. Which is why i found it interesting that you said we don’t know much about Travis from these songs - for me he is the focal point of all of this. We learn about him from how he makes her feel, how sure, how content. He doesn’t cower under bright lights and that makes her life easier. He doesn’t lead her on, he keeps his word and in turn that makes her feel safe to confess what she felt she had to keep in for so long. She can have both someone to trust and cartier because it’s ok that the girl likes shiny things. Even in wood, obviously beyond inuendos there is depth- he is redwood-stable, constant, strong, and for the first time she doesn’t have to rely in superstitions because she doesn’t need them, she has him and trusts him. If you want to learn more about Travis, there is quite a bit of lore in opalite in those verses about his previous relationship which was toxic and borderline abusive ( many videos where the ex belittles him, or makes him uncomfortable) , making the eldest daughter even more meaningful ( now you’re home). They are both people whose needs were completely neglected and they were made to feel as if not settling for bare minimum was wrong.

Lucia

I thought the discussion on the depth was one of the most interesting discussions you’ve had on the topic of Taylor’s songwriting!!! Thank you!

Nora Tollin

ā€You made a deal with this devil, turns out my dicks biggerā€ is a highlight

Selina

I really enjoyed the discussions in this video! I couldn't really place some of the feelings (very similar to yours) that I have around this album at this stage, and it really helped me to fathom a bit more. Thanks for this video!!

Love what you wrote Em!

On Bonny’s favorite line from LOASG, I think ā€œburning bright like the end of a cigaretteā€ might actually refer to ā€œKitty.ā€ It made me think of how, in movies, people light a cigarette after really good sex — but for her, that same ā€œafterā€ feeling comes from performing. It reminds me of the footage we used to see after the Eras Tour, when Taylor would wave to everyone while heading backstage, still glowing from the energy of it all.

The only discourse on this video should be that photo of Emily dressed as Pitbull šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Fav lyric Cancelled: ā€œbring a tiny violin to a knife fight… tone deaf and hot lets effing off herā€. Visual of Taylor rubbing her fingers together ā€œthis is me playing the world’s tiniest violin for youā€

scout

my fav lyrics from each song! :) ophelia: ā€œbut love was a cold bed full of scorpions, the venom stole her sanityā€ (i like the way it kind of alludes back to tortured poets and being in the asylum) elizabeth taylor: ā€œbe my NY when hollywood hates me, you’re only as hot as your last hit babyā€ (the way she sings it is just OFFENSIVE and stuck in my head all the time) opalite: ā€œand what a simple thought, you’re starving till you’re notā€ father figure: I mean really I want to say the whole final chorus but that’s a lot so I’ll say ā€œthis empire belongs to meā€ CHILLS EVERY TIME eldest daughter: ā€œcause i thought that i’d never find that beautiful beautiful life that shimmers that innocent life backā€ is too relatable ruin the friendship: ā€œmy advice is always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your lifeā€ actually romantic: ā€œlike a toy chihuahua barking at me from a tiny purse, that’s how much it hurtsā€ gagged wi$h li$t: ā€œwe tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do — wow!ā€ wood: ā€œdaisy’s bare naked, i was distraught, he loves me notā€ cancelled!: ā€œtone-deaf and hot, let’s fucking off herā€ the sarcasm lol (but also ā€œdid you make a joke only a man could?ā€) honey: ā€œbuy the paint in the colour of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn lifeā€ TLOAS: can’t pick between ā€œi took her pearls of wisdom, hung them from my neckā€ and ā€œdo you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?ā€

scout

i also would love to hear more of your fav lyrics from past albums!!!!

Gianina

love that take on it yessss! I always took it as a description of the fan (Taylor) when Kitty comes out, like 'wow she came out' and all the fans are glowing like a cigarette from excitement that they get to see this huge artist.

MamaPatricia

Loved reading your take in the lyrics. So many layers to fathom!

Malina

Thank you for sharing this! I absolutely agree ā¤ļø

Julie K

The same happened to me - if non-swifties know one thing about the album, its the "scandal" of wood!

MwanaLesa

I agree about not knowing what Travis does that is special. We know that he makes her happy. And that’s great. But I don’t know what he does that makes her happy. I want a song about her being worried that she’s gonna finally get the thing she wants and then fuck it up. THATis a Taylor Swift song.… Not all of this I want a basketball hoop and a big penis.

Chevonne

hehe our taste is always so different. i believe ruin the friendship is the worst song on the album in an objective type of way

Chevonne

idk if you guys know, but the guy is responsible for buying the corsage! so i believe its wilted because his effort (eg. to get a good one) is subpar

Chevonne

i definitely interpret the cigarette line like emily said!! its soo good "then glowing like the end of a cigarette - wow - she came out" 🄲

Melissa Joyal

The redwood tree isn’t a reference to the size of his penis, it’s the size of him…. He can’t be missed because he is huge, 6’6ā€, in her interviews she has made so many comments; on the podcast she references how they can find a way to fit him on the plane..

Jessie Anderson

I think it could refer to either, we know how much Taylor likes double (maybe even triple) meanings!

Andreea

LOVED this video chickens!! If you feel like it, I'd personally love this for other albums as well (though it will probably be MUCH harder to choose lyrics haha) Also, the colours I see: 🌲the fate of ophelia - dark forest green šŸ’œelizabeth taylor - royal velvet purple šŸ„›opalite - milky shimmery white šŸ’¼father figure - leather brown ā˜ļøeldest daughter - cloudy white šŸ‘’ruin the friendship - mint green 🩷actually romantic - hot barbie pink 🩵wi$h li$t - clear sky blue 🧔wood - bright orange šŸ·cancelled! - dark wine burgundy šŸhoney - honey yellow 🄻the life of a showgirl - glittery orange And the lyrics!!! the fate of ophelia: "and if you'd never come for me, I might have lingered in purgatory" elizabeth taylor: "been number one but I never had two" opalite: "this is just a storm inside a teacup" father figure: "mistake my kindness for weakness and find your card cancelled" eldest daughter: "sad as it seems, apathy is hot" ruin the friendship: "my advice is always ruin the friendship, better that than regret it for all time" actually romantic: "how many times has your boyfriend said, why are we always talking about her?" wi$h li$t: "I made wishes on all of the stars, please God, bring me a best friend who I think is hot" wood: "fingers crossed until you put your hand on mine" cancelled!: "I salute you if you're much too much to handle" OR "now they've broken you like they've broken me, but a shattered glass is a lot more sharp" honey: "buy the paint in the colour of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn life" the life of a showgirl: "but I'm immortal now, baby dolls" OR "pain hidden by the lipstick and lace, sequins are forever"

No I don't think so because Taylor went to prom with her friend not her boyfriend that year his girlfriend broke up with him before prom and Taylor proposed with wooden sticks that's how she ended up going to prom on her sophomore year so I don't think she is throwing a dig or saying her friend wasn't putting effort I think it's just to show that this is later in the night so the corsage already wilted

Laura

I love your take on it too! I have yet to really fathom this track so this conversation had hadn’t fathomed this lyric in either way until this video 😃

Chevonne

omg tea!! thanks for sharing :)

Chevonne

totally agree about the regal purple for elizabeth taylor!! :)

Chevonne

my jaw was on the floor !

Lia

The best song on the album is objectively The Fate of Ophelia (it is perfect!!!) and it’s also my fav. The piano??????? Are you kidding? The adlibs? The lyrics? THE MELODIES? The bass line???? What . No . The depth of the bridge and the outro and the fun of the verses and chorus?? It’s too perfect to describe. And also it has the best MV of her entire career. Thank GOD this song exists because I’ve been listening to only this one for the whole month.

Ellen Jarrett

I loved the discussions around these lyrics and songs! I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the rest of the albums. Love you guys <3

Ali ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

I think I might disagree about feeling a little removed or away from her heart. I think that some of these songs even being boppy and happy and easily understandable, I do think there is a ton of depth that people haven’t fathomed yet. Even the intricate word choices are just as intentional as usual. I think there’s a lot of vulnerability in her allowing it to feel how she feels. I think she has a lot of ā€œfictionā€ in some past works that people forget about, even in songs inspired by true emotion she’s not really laying it out on the table in a ā€œthis is my relationshipā€ way. She a lot of times has chosen to display her emotions under a veil of an intense metaphor or story, in this album it makes me feel close to her that she’s just like ā€œthis is it, this is how I feel.ā€ I’m also aware that it’s easier to share happier emotions that way but I think there’s so much vulnerability in her choice to be pretty on the nose with this album. What I mean to say is, I don’t totally agree with you in that regard and I sort of think that you two might feel differently in a few months or years (but if you don’t that’s totally okay!) šŸ«¶šŸ»

YESSS Emily your eldest daughter pick is so great - I love that Ferris wheels kisses and lilacs as a lyric is kind of chronological and symbolic of a first date - you go to something like a carnival and you feel so nervous to be vulnerable, that first kiss that comes later and then him giving you flowers for the first time as more of a serious sign that this is really something between the two of you. Also lilacs in my head symbolise the love blooming into something tangible and real. It’s also like that scary fun feeling of a Ferris wheel feels the same as the nervousness and vulnerability before a first kiss and the lilacs feel the same as the sweetness after it. It’s like she put those things in that specific order for a reason and it’s pure poetry!!! Also Ferris wheel specifically calls back to that childlike feeling, that giddy feeling of falling in love that brings you back to your most vulnerable self. They aren’t just random words in any order - she’s chosen them carefully and I’m OBSESSED! I also think Bonnie is so right about the heart of the song and chose the perfect lyric to capture its whole essence. And the way Bonnie described Taylor’s uncoolness is so true - the same Taylor who wrote ā€˜The Outside’ wrote ā€˜Eldest Daughter’ but now she’s not hoping to break her way into the circle of cool people anymore because she’s never going to ā€˜leave out’ her true love 🄺 like that just breaks my heart and stitches it right back up again. I love that you guys love this song as much as I do! I could go on all day analysing this song

Leonie

There should ALWAYS be space for some respectful criticism! Thank you for this, I found it quite interesting ā¤ļø

I have this head cannon that these lyrics in Honey ā€œHoney, I'm home, we could play house We can bed down, pick me up Who's the baddest in the land? What's the plan? You could be my forever night standā€ and ā€œSweetie, it's yours, kicking in doors Take it to the floor, give me more, Buy the paint in the color of your eyes And graffiti my whole damn lifeā€ are actually the things he’s said to her, because they feel like a different vernacular then the rest of the song.

Lg

i am in my 30s, so i've been around the block. obviously it has connected with many many many people, including yourself. there are songs i connect with and ones that make me scratch my head. i just offered a fun little "theory" (god knows the swifties love to peddle in a theory) as a way for me, personally, to better understand why this album is the way it is. im not on twitter or tiktok. i literally have no idea what ppl are saying outside of this community, professional cultural critics, and my friends irl. this is just how i've fathomed. all love

Ella

Also we need a moment for ā€˜wintergreen kiss, all mine’ 🄹

Ana Luiza Magalhães

also my take on the ā€œbuy the paint in the color of your eyes and graffiti my whole damn lifeā€ is like the whole point of the song is her redefining these ā€œterms of endearmentā€ so when she says that specific lyric to me it means that she’s not only enveloped in these person’s world, love and colors but in fact their love healed a part in her so deeply that she now sees herself and her ways with the other person’s eyes. she sees herself in the way he sees her, in the colors he paints her. does it make sense? I just fathomed this while Emily was sharing her interpretation and i was floored for a second

Ana Luiza Magalhães

so like she’s not only redefining those terms, she’s redefining how she sees herself in a way because of how this other person sees her

Ana Luiza Magalhães

the pack can be a pack of cigarettes as well so i think all of it connects

Elizabeth

Hey I think I agree with each of your choices! That’s crazy!

emely

Thank you so much for the video! I would have loved it if you had done separate images like the cover with the song title to showcase the color, like a collage. I'm including that as a suggestion for next time, but I loved that you used a color, and the fonts you chose were amazing. Thank you again! šŸ’—

Stephanie Stevens

thank you for this conversation!!!!! It is different than albums in the past (I am not saying it's bad), but it frustrates me when some of us swifties act like it's not.

Gabi

YOU SAW PITBULL?!?!!?? IM SO JEALOUSSSS

Gabi

Everything you said at the beginning of the video is so spot on and just reinforces why I like your perspective. Thank you as always for your honesty

Chelsea

Yes I would love this for every album!! I think some of what you called ā€œsurface levelā€ is maybe more ā€œgeneral / vagueā€. I agree with your analysis that this album similar to 1989 in that sense. 1989 is one of my fave albums BECAUSE it’s more vague so you can apply it to your own imagination, while still having that gut punch of emotion because it’s Taylor

Jeebs

It just hit me that this album feels like an interlude.

Sydney

The Fate Of Ophelia: And if you’d never come for me I might’ve lingered in purgatory Elizabeth Taylor: Be my NY when Hollywood hates me Opalite: Dancing through the lightning strikes And Life is a song, it ends when it ends Father Figure: They want to see you rise, they don’t want you to reign Eldest Daughter: Apart from the one you’ve mentioned… Every eldest daughter was the first lamb to the slaughter, so we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire Ruin the Friendship: Same one and Bonnie My advice is always answer the question, better that than ask it all your life Actually Romantic: Apart from the one mentioned.. How many times has your boyfriend said, ā€œwhy are we always talking about her?ā€ Wi$h Li$t: Same one as Bonnie Please, god, bring me a best friend who I think is hot Wood: Girls I don’t need to catch the bouquet to know a hard rock is on the way And The curse on me was broken by your magic wand Cancelled: Beware the wrath of masked crusaders And Can’t you see my infamy loves company? Honey: Same one as you both. And You could be my forever night stand The Life of a Showgirl: They ripped me off like false lashes and then threw me away. I’m sorry this lyric is fuckedddd up. They ripped her off??? Then threw her away??? Like falsies???? I’ve died dead by a thousand cuts.

Kera Wilhelmsen

I 100% took it as the showgirl was glowing like the end of s cigarette 🄰

Kera Wilhelmsen

This album has such intelligent writing and is SO Millenial coded to me. The beats. The sass. The eldest daughter. Her stepping into her power this age and saying what she's wanted to say (Father Figure & Cancelled! & even TLOASG too). That's 100% where I am as an almost-40 year old. Saying all the things. But being so happy in her personal life. I relate to this album SO much. I have heard this repeated with friends my age as well. I definitely do not always feel like depth with darkness. I'm not always wanting to listen to something devastating or where she's in a bad place. I/we needed this type of music period. But in her discography it was missing. I cried to 2 songs (Eldest Daughter and Ruin the Friendship).

Kera Wilhelmsen

One of the values of an album, to me, is if I will skip or cherry-pick songs. This album is a no-skip album and the only other album I can currently say that fir is Reputation. I always feel like listening to every song. Every other album has too much depth with anxiety or sadness where there are skips. So that's a big deal to me.

Kera Wilhelmsen

I'll say ideally 1989 is a no skip but I definitely heard the singles too often

Dee

My favorite lyric in Opalite is ā€œI thought my house was haunted, I used to live with ghosts,ā€ because of the call-back to ā€œdancing phantoms on the terrace, are they second hand embarrassed?ā€ in lmom. So good

Katie Garnett

This is one of my favorite video formats that you all have done in a while! I love hearing which lines resonate with you from each track all in one video. Would love to see future videos doing the same thing for Taylor's other albums and for other artists as well.

Amber

wait i simply must join in this is my favourite type of conversation: the fate of ophelia = teal; elizabeth taylor = luxury red; opalite = opal/blue/white/glittery; father figure = burgundy/brown; eldest daughter = a mix of light and dark purple; ruin the friendship = such a shout with the colour of the mini piano SPOT ON; actually romantic = hot pink + orange; wish list = simply gold no other option; wood = brown/tree bark as you do; cancelled = a really dark red almost a black/red; honey = simply yellow of course; the life of a showgirl = turquoise and pearly white combo

Betty Hates you Too

Joy, hope, fun AF, but a teensy bit of smug. I think maybe she is setting us up for album 13

Claire Williams

loved this please do it with other albums!!! also my favorite lyric from opalite is ā€œand don’t we try to love love, we give it all we gotā€

Emily Elser

also the "Finally left the table; what a simple thought, you're starving til you're not" callback to tolerate it is DIABOLICAL

Carley

I also took the ā€œgraffiti my whole damn lifeā€ as like she is painting over her previous relationships and love life with this graffiti, with Travis and his eyes/eye color! It’s so cute 😫

Hannah

I immediately think of violet/purple for Elizabeth Taylor for obvious reasons?

Kathryn Lujan

chihuahua owner here. they’re just scared🄹🤣 but also not not annoying af lmao

Jordan Conger

Please do this for each album! šŸ’•

Kalli Drake

Would love favorite lyric videos for each album! -and as I’m typing this, your midnights video comes in!! Thank you chickens!!

Janelle Keller

Can’t you just let her share her art without criticizing its lack of ā€œdepthā€. This album is everything just as it is.

Liv

Then go listen to Lover... She had said she wrote exactly how she was feeling why would she lie about that? She's finally in a relationship where she doesn't have to be worried or be filled with anxiety while being with someone. She went through all of that already. She deserves this!

Laura Pacheco

I <3 hearing your conversations about this album and how it feels different from others, not necessarily in a bad way, but just comparing it to her larger body of work and analyzing what feels similar and what feels new. I appreciate your nuanced takes as well as appreciating the lovely lyrics in this album!

Tay04

I really don't think their intention was to downright critique the lack of depth in the album, rather just mention that its there and place a questionmark by it. Not everything has to be a bad comment, its litterally just stating a fact about the album.

Tay04

I really do not know if someone already mentioned this, but imo the 'grafitti my whole damn life' lyric, while it could also be a tag reference and like a more personalized way of going about it, grafitti in my opinion has a fun feel. Like a pop of color on a grey wall or something. Like a painting can also be serious and moody whereas i think of grafitti as this like explosion of color. This for me also leans into the way she tends to describe Travis both in her songwriting and in interviews. a human exclamation point and ' quite the pyro' if we are taking the pyro thing as a personality trait.

Barb šŸ”†

Yes! This song and others I hear inside jokes, for sure!

Barb šŸ”†

Thank you for saying all this. I completely jive with what you're saying. I have not put it into words, but what you say here is all of jt

Barb šŸ”†

Immaculate comment. Thank you šŸ™

Barb šŸ”†

Here June 2026, in the middle of many pop girlie new releases. I'm here to tell you that Taylor has ruined me from appreciating others' lyrics. Even if it was only TLOASG compared to other lyricism, I 100% believe it's better then anything else out there. Metaphors, visuals, innuendo, poetics, the rhymes are not obvious... This album is beautifully written

Deb

Just came back and rewatched this episode and found it just as off putting and offensive as the first time. They clearly wanted the "tea" about the private feelings in the relationship between Taylor and Travis and feel the song is "less deep" and "keeps you at arms length"? and that they "fathomed in a couple weeks" all the themes of the songs? Help!!! They totally missed the point....the songs are vulnerable because they are Taylor writing love letters TO Travis. The details are her sharing information about hurts and feelings that have shaped HER experiences. These are things that she is now sharing with Travis, and via the song, with the fans. Honey is a love letter TO Travis. She isn't putting information into the verses to "block" fans or "hold them at arms length" they are hurtful experiences she has had that she is sharing to explain why she responds a certain way to pet names, but has come to a place where she feels scene when Travis uses them. She is sharing a snippet about their relationship, but a lot of personal feelings about herself. Same is true with Eldest Daughter, Opalite, Fate of O, Wood etc. all love letters to Travis.
