I feel like “wear you like a necklace” is a double entendre. It could mean what you described, but also makes me think of the term “pearl necklace.” Which is not only a sexual meaning, but also a symbol of purity and wealth at the same time. Especially with the sexy lyrics about scratches down his back, it makes me think it could mean the sexual version of that term, without saying it in a crass way.

I see the gold cage metaphor as a play on "golden handcuffs" which talks about trapping people in a job or lifestyle because they get a lot out of it even if they are unhappy. I don't think Taylor was unhappy at this stage but more she was so obsessed with him she would have accepted any kind of relationship even though she maybe wanted a committed long term one from him. Her feelings were in his cage, but it was a gold cage.

A few random thoughts on Miss Americana.... Its not my favorite Taylor song, but I really do love it, and its in my top 5 on Lover. Its been that way since it came out. I do understand when people say they don't like it because of the metaphor, but I don't think of it as only political. Or even American Politics. To me, it feels like more on commentary on our society as a whole, and the patriarchy. Especially the lyrics in the 2nd verse: "I see the high-fives between the bad guys" "I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed, boys will be boys then, where are the wise men? Darling I'm scared. No cameras catch my muffled cries" While I think this is true in America, and even more now with women's rights going away, I also think this applies to any women in our current society. And then when you add in the love story to it--that's where it really shines for me. Its almost like she's saying all these bad things that are happening to women everywhere. And its so weird if you have a male partner that you love and are committed to--its almost like the way society works is to pit us against each other, or its expecting for the man to save the woman. It really makes me think of a book I read ages ago, "Reading Lolita in Tehran" which is actually a memoir by a brilliant literature professor in Iran and what it was like when the radical Islamists took over in the 70s and she was stripped of most of her rights. She was married, had been for awhile, and her husband had to watch her being degraded all the time, and how awful it was for both of them. Its such an interesting dynamic when you think of it--we fall in love (straight people of course is what I'm referring to here) and then we are almost like enemies on opposite sides in so many ways. "You are the only one who seems to care" really speaks to me in this--in general, good men don't think about things like this all that much until it applies to someone they love. Then they are horrified about what happens to women--but I'm not sure they all are, they just don't want anything happening to their partner, because she is THEIRS. Its a really interesting conundrum if you really think about it. This is obviously very generalized, but hopefully I'm getting the message across in what I'm trying to say. I just think there are so many layers to this song, and I haven't heard anyone capture it in this way before.

In So it Goes, I don’t think her feelings are being held hostage by him, I interpreted it as she’s being held hostage by her own feelings. Bonny kind of explored that idea directly after when she said “she can’t control it”, it’s like when you’re being held hostage by someone, you’re at their mercy and you have no control. But in this case, she’s not being held hostage by a person/him specifically, it’s her own feelings. She has no control over what she says and does and what’s happening cuz she’s just at the mercy to her feelings being so strong for him that she can’t control herself. She just has to submit to how she’s feeling.

my interpretation of “gold cage hostage to my feelings” has been linking it to dancing with our hands tied where she says “deep blue but you painted me golden” in the sense that during them falling for each other she found a very golden color in their romance. you could also link it to daylight. but essentially her feelings have been held hostage in this cage but during so it goes they are still doing the back-and-forth cat and mouse thing, and she’s shielding herself from the world and him during this period of their relationship. and I see gold as the second color next to black for rep due to all the golden imagery she uses on the tour especially if you think about how she performed king of my heart. she uses a lot of gold imagery to describe their love and a lot of blue imagery to describe him which is how we’ve all put the links from rep through ttpd for this relationship. you can also think about it like he put the midas touch on her, everything he did turned golden in her eyes.

I totally get Happiness, and I don’t think you’ve had to have been in any specific situation to fully grasp and to fully feel this songs wisdom. For me this song connects to my high school years and up until I was 20-21. Years of misery and depression I felt - living in my small home town. I had a very out of nowhere moment with miss americana and it never went away, which made the eras start even more superior. The production just tickles my brain chemistry.
