Chickens, it’s really subtle (which is why I love it so much 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️) so absolutely no criticism for not picking it up, but Jules (blond + v. cool) is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. They are (John) Logan’s sibling and the person running the gossip account (Fifth Line). 🥰 They don’t over explain it (like in TSITP), they simply refer to Jules as “they/them” and “Logan’s sibling” and leave it up to the audience to notice. Obsessed with the subtle inclusivity! So so good! 🤩🙌

Hi chickens, just to clarify a little thing becuase i know it's a liitle confusing, the party scene it's not in a frat house its on Beau's house (Dean's friend) it was mention in the episode, right where they announced the party. Also i am not sure in the show but if i remeber correctly in the books the 4 main boys live in a house off campus not in a frat. Dean's family its very wealthy and Garret its not poor by any means so that's how they can afford it.

The show is based in a book series just like The summer I turned pretty but they have nothing in common. While both are romance novels the Off campus series it's spicy therefore all the thirst traps, sex and nudity scene, had to be include ortherwise the book fans would've been very offended. 😂

Favourite day of the week! Just for information for the chickens: Dean (Dolphin) and Beau (the other friend) are like rich New York families (important for later), and the house the party was at was the Maxwells' (Beau's) family vacation house in Cape Cod, which I guess was close to where the 'away' hockey game was. Secondly, the theme of the birthday (they're born like close together, so they conjoin party every year) was dynamic duos; so people came in pairs. Logan and Tucker (Johns x2) were the birds and the bees (Logan with wings and Tuck was a bee). Dean and Beau were Goose and Maverick from Top Gun (Dean being Maverick is important for later context) ((so is Beau being Goose ifykyk)). Hannah and Garrett were a magician and the bunny he pulls from the hat, which is why the whole 'puck bunny' thing was brought up in this episode. Ally and Sean were JLO and Ben Affleck of course.

Absolutely correct, this episode was HOT. Bonnie you are absolutely correct on the change in opinion on Dolphin Dean, and he only gets better. Hannah and Garrett aren't dating in the boyfriend/girlfriend sense but rather 'hooking up', and Garrett isn't 'hooking up' with anyone else, but they're also not exclusive, and it's all so convoluted but also accurate to the mindset of early 20s dating right now. Simply cannot wait for episode three, one of my personal favourites in terms of development particulary for Hannah's character and her background.

I understand what you're saying Emily BUT I will say... he hasn't done anything that needs justifying, we conflate tropes with what we actually know of him. He doesn't need a backstory to explain away anything, it's literally just to contextualise who he is and I like that they let us know early on with Garret because it's *Hanna* finding out, she's starting to understand someone she/we misjudged as some sports dudes whose probably not that smart and sleeps around etc. but he actually doesn't and isn't those things he just doesn't care if that's his rep... she's realising he's disciplined, a good leader, responsible, determined, and very straight-up and direct but not emotional. Hanna falling for him because he's "mysterious" or a "bad boy" who she wants to find out more about would be more icky to me, much like how I enjoy Belly not liking S1 Conrad but rather the Connie he was *before* beneath his walls.

I think that GG deserved more credit for the drink scene. Even though John picked up on the needing a closed drink situation, GG was already hunting for a non alcoholic beverage for her without questioning her being sober (which is typically strange in college), and when he offered her the can he made an effort to make her comfortable by telling her that there was no pressure to accept the beverage he did offer. Those two things were very thoughtful and also very ‘a man written by a woman’ vibes 😂😂

I am noticing how defensive I am of this show. Like I could cry I feel that strongly about it. Any negativity is really hard for me to swallow. Reminds me of Taylor too, and other things I am passionate about. I find it so hard. I am so glad you’re enjoying the show now and this episode has some of the best moments from the whole season (jlo scene is #1 for sure). I’m really attached to Dean for some reason. I actually think it’s the blonde hair. Got my heart broken by a blondie 💔 so Dean just does it for me and always has and it is hard to hear the mean things like dolphin. I’m a cancer if you can’t tell, sensitive and passionate. I’m sure I wrote a whole comment last week after my initial comment when you weren’t loving the thirst traps, about how it feels really real tho, but I can’t find it anywhere. Like team mates would train together and men actually do behave differently and have different banter around their guy friends than let’s say a woman they actually connect with etc. that’s normal. And the boys would interact these ways in their frat houses so I find it hard when you shit on that cause to me it makes sense. Even my own husband who is the best husband, partner, dad etc tells me stories about conversations and banter he has at work with male colleagues and they can be pretty gross at times but they are just having a joke around mostly. Not everything needs to be that serious all the time. Men can be multi faceted. Just like I am different with different groups of people etc too. I don’t know why but even garrets arrogance kinda does it for me, in a way I feel like he’s only ever being honest or sarcastic. So I don’t really see it as he’s a dick. He just says what he’s thinking when others don’t but he’s also not outwardly mean. Other than to Justin when he calls him Jacob 😂 anyway wanted to share because I’ve been a patron for so long now and I feel so connected to you girls and am always excited for your videos but these 2 episodes have thrown me at times. But it’s like you said at the beginning Em, you don’t know what you don’t know! Also wanted to mention that Hannah has an epic mum in this show, you will love her. Not sure if you’ll see my comment but lots of love xx

A couple of things: 1. Logan had a crush on Hannah, and it’s gotten worse since she kissed him to prove a point. He knew who she was from being waited on at Malone’s and never did anything about it. He’s the one who told Garrett her name, then got weird when Garrett started noticing her and looking through her Instagram… when he keeps looking at them, part of it is jealousy. 2. They don’t live in a frat house, they live in a house off campus that tends to be the party house. In this episode, they are in a mansion in Cape Cod, which is like the vacation place for Boston area similar to how The Hamptons or Mantauk is the vacation place for people living in NYC… both Dean and Beau come from really rich families so they planned their birthdays to celebrate at Beau’s family’s vacation home. Glad you guys are starting to like the show! It’s quite a journey! They just finished filming season 2 so hopefully we get that early next year! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

That Beau Maxwell’s Sumer house - they are obviously rich and having an annual birthday bash at the summer house for both Dean and Beau because their birthdays are close. I think part of the reason Garret didnt think about the open container thing and John Logan did is that they have a sibling that, in comparison to the hockey boys, would be more vulnerable to situations like that so it makes you more aware as well

they're explaing that right now for garrett, hockey is the #1 priority cuz he wants to prove that he deserves his place cuz he works hard and cuz of his own talents! not because of his dad! so getting into a relationship distracts from that! i would say they're more explaining rather than excusing his behavior! it will all make a lot more sense you just have to be patient chickens

Simply watching this reaction for a second time already because I am addicted to both the chickens and Off Campus!! Love a good rotting on the couch day to soothe the soul! I must point out though Garrett and Hannah are not exclusively dating. They both say this at different points and never call each other boyfriend or girlfriend. They are doing an in between thing which is fairly common for people in there young 20's currently I have noticed. They are seeing each other repeatedly but are not exclusive. I feel like my friends and I used to call it the "talking stage" or where you casually date multiple people at a time. Thats why it would be okay for Justin to make a move.

i also wanted to share some context about the OFF CAMPUS book series (since you were talking about if hannah was the main role) - the book actually alternates pov every chapter, so it's basically equally both of hannah and gg's story!!! and each book is about each teammate (garrett, john logan, dean and tucker IN THAT ORDER) - in the series you see the main couple but you also get glimpses into some of the other storylines as the showrunner really wanted to build an ensemble cast and universe!!!! 💛

Yes definitely, she’s actually even more of a music girlie. The pop showcase is actually the winter showcase and she’s paired up with a classmate who’s a douche but a good performer so she thinks she can win with him. They erased his character (although I like to think it’s the guy who gave her that “afraid to get deep” critique during class) and just made Justin who she collaborated with instead. Which make more sense imo, gives them more of a connection, whereas in the book Justin is a football player and Hannah has a huge crush because she saw him reading a book once lol and thought he was much smarter and nicer than the typical jock.

I waited to comment until after you watched episode two because I just KNEW you would fathom how superior this show was. But I will say as someone who read the books first, it was interesting to see how the characters are reading to people coming in blind because I really took for granted that I knew the characters first and probably overlooked a lot of the things that read kinda frightful at the beginning. I haven't seen a comment about this so sorry if this is repeating information but it's just worth noting that this book series came out long before the heated rivalry book and show so they're definitely not just trying to capitalize off the success of that. But it is interesting that the two series both got picked up for TV adaptations and came out so close together.

so i hear your complaints, but they don't really seem fair to me! pretty much every teen drama has a "bad boy" that you don't like at first and then you start to see their home life and realize why they are the way they are! i mean even heated rivalry does that with ilya! he seems like this cocky kind of jerk hockey player and then you learn how horrible his dad and brother are! in the 1st ep, we get those flashbacks of young garrett and his parents and learn that his dad sucks and we also see that in the scene between them before the game! also in the last scene of the 1st ep, garrett starts to open up to hannah about his dad and explains that he wants to earn the grade and not receive special treatment! also on the topic of the fact that we start to see an emotional connection between hannah and garrett form so now when they connect more physically it will have this pay off to it unlike the scene with garrett and kendall, again in HR, shane and ilya have sex within the first 20 minutes of ep 1 without any emotional connection happening! the emotional connection builds over time! i also just don't think it matters that we don't know the boys when we get the "thirst trap" scenes! also though with the boys workout scene in ep 1, you 1. get dialogue over the top of these sports announcers talking about garrett which just adds to the pressure garrett feels & 2. you get a glimpse into the dynamics of the friend group!!! love you guys

This is such a great point! They aren't using Garrett's backstory to "justify male behaviour", he hasn't actually behaved in a negative way, we just expect a character like his to treat girls poorly when in fact he's having consensual casual sex and communicating openly with Kendall that that's all he's interested in. Something I love about this show is we all think we know what a character is going to act like based on stereotypes and then they surprise us by actually being healthy and positive!

I get what you mean about us getting more of Garrett's backstory than Hannah's at this point but remember, she's our main character so we're already invested in her. They have to get us invested in Garrett so we're interested in the story of them being together. Not giving us Hannah's backstory also gives us the opportunity to have the other characters piece it together the same way we are so that we understand their behaviour and dynamic shifts too

Not sure if someone mentioned it but I wanna note something about what you call the thirst trap scenes... As much as they are filmed to look hot, they are also important in the story as a part of them being athletes and spending a lot of time training and staying in shape for hockey. And I think it's important to have shows that talk about athletes that are actually happening in sport settings... Another thing and you'll see more the more you watched but most toxic trait you attributed to the guy because of how it generally plays irl or in society aren't actually true about the guys here. And the house where the birthday party happened wasn't a frat house, it was Beau's family house.

Chickens! American here to answer your frat questions!! Idk if anyone has gotten to it yet, but I will tell you my experience! I grew up, and still live, in a college town. Campus housing can mostly be put into three main categories: dorms, off campus, and frat/sororities. Freshman are usually required to stay on campus for their first year! Off campus simply means you are living in somewhere not on campus grounds, or in a building/house not owned by the college. This is where the boys in the show live, hence the book/show title. Now, frats! I have been inside of frats, and the best way I can describe them to you is Jerimiah’s frat is pretty accurate. Greek life is normally large, older (sometimes as old as the campus, so our school has ones that are hundreds of years old) houses that have been LIVED through. Furniture is not provided, however sometimes furniture is passed down. For example, a large ugly man couch can outlive the tenants because it is still functional, and has seen too many spills/stains for someone to want to take it when they leave. It is kind of a hodge podge of all who came before. It normally feels like an American bar with pong tables. Sticky wooden floors are normal. Dart boards, stolen traffic cones/signs, and neon signs are pretty accurate. The air hockey table is not. But the aesthetic of it does match the energy inside a frat/boys rental house. So, it works for tv but isn’t plausible. I will also note that the party they went to is in a summer house in cape cod (big money) owned by one of the boy’s family. So the matching lamps was curated not by boys, but by a very rich woman most likely lol. Comment for more questions! Hope this helps!!!

I haven’t revisited off campus since I first watched it so I’m super excited to be doing this rewatch alongside my chickens. This show didn’t have the same rewatchability that Heated Rivalry and TSITP have for me, and I had a lot of the same cringey feelings in the first couple of eps as you gals, but I did overall really enjoy the show so I’m excited to see what you guys think by the end!!

eep lol - this birthday party was at some relative's house in cape cod (which means the college is probably in Massachusetts) NOT at a frat house :D that's why it was so clean! also also, frat houses typically don't make you buy your own furniture. they'll have a standard bed & desk like the dorms do. but off campus houses usually will have you buy your own furniture. I don't think all the hockey boys are in a frat, I think they just have a shared house and they *absolutely* brought their own pool table (or it's been passed down through the years.)

guys, that scene in the gym where the coach talks about his dad, the new information on that scene was: his coach could have talked to the dean about is grade and let him off the hook, but garret asked him not to. Because garret doesn't want special treatment just because he is an athleet. So that scene is not meant to justify any behavior of him, just too show that he doesn't believe in corruption or getting preferecial treatment, he wants to earn his spot and his grade, working for it. So, that he is a stand up guy.

I think the point of the scene with the coach and Hannah wasn’t for us to feel sorry for garret it was to make the point that the coach could’ve just gotten garret out of actually trying in his class to get a better grade. But instead garret wanted to actually do it the right way instead of cutting corners just bc of who his dad is. Idk that’s how I always took that scene. That Hannah is finding out that garret has some form of morals and wants to do things the right way even if the coach was willing to talk to his major and get garret out of actually having to pass the class. I feel like it was a moment for Hannah to see that he’s not completely the entitled jock stereotype.

I think you’re both coming to realize this but this definitely isn’t TSITP 😂😂😂 it’s definitely a much more campy/at times cheesy story but it really will grow on you!! The characters do grow and there are some fun things coming your way.

I never noticed how much Garrett struggles with himself before he suggests asking Justin for help. He doesn't want to say it bc he likes her and doesn't want to push her towards Justin, but he also wants to help her win the showcase and stay at Briar U. And he ultimately chose to put his feelings aside and do the best thing for her to win. Just a nice detail I never noticed before...

I really resonated with this conversation on what you want to wear. You know in your SOUL what you like to wear, and it's infuriating how men will attach messaging to that. In my office there was a security guard who I never spoke to, but he started sending me concerning and flirtatious messages (I went to my supervisor, it's all good now). This man was in his 60s, and it completely psyched me out. I started wanting to dress so frumpy at work, and it feels like it's taking away a part of your soul, your personality when you think people are perceiving you in a sexualizing way. It's been nice not having that pressure anymore, but I really resonated with not wanting to get attention, and then feeling almost guilty for even viewing yourself in that way.

Hello! Thought I should just mention, that both John's are called by their last names! So, Logan and Tucker. This originated in the books (A MUST READ to understand bits and pieces of character arcs), and it's part of the reason why we love them. And sometimes in friend groups, you are just gonna end up with one or more with the same name, and Elle Kennedy used that to represent these types of friend groups. Also, the guy criticising Hannah's work in the demo scene is Cass, a major character in the books also.
