Y’all explained the vibes from lover so well. Like I love love love lover, but in a way it did feel like she was trying more than usual? Idk but still iconic anyway. Thankful for folklore and evermore

Emzies

I am a Me! stan and love it as a lead single. I can understand the argument for different songs being more representative of Lover as an album, but ultimately it takes listening to the entirety of an album to properly fathom it.

Emzies

I stand with you on this, Tatiana. 🫶🏻

Emzies

Same.

anntallogy

best words describing lover I’he head in my life this is must to be studied

Lauren S.

When Me! came out originally, it reminded me of the song Happy by Pharrell Williams that came out in 2014 and the song by Justin Timberlake called. Can't stop the feeling that came out in 2016. Both of those songs were really happy up beat songs that were meant to be family friendly. And I immediately thought that Taylor was going for a similar vibe Because both of those songs ended up being a big hit. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for taylor.

Brittany Diamond

Agreed. ME! wasn't as up-tempo as the other two, and without the dance-ability a song like that can kinda fall flat even if it has perfectly good melodies and perfectly fun lyrics.

Kaitie C

Rewatching this when we are a fortnight away from TTPD and absolutely dying over the Post Malone collab mention 😭👏🏻 it’s going to be iconic and I know the reaction here is going to be SUPERIOR

Kate Harney

Post TTPD, why does Me feel like a call out to Matty? Brandon looks like him, is theatrical like him and the boredom line… 🤔

Breezy Bumbles

I just had a thought as I rewatch this for the hundredth time…In ME! when we talk about the metamorphosis from snake to butterfly and Emily says “oh you thought I was a snake? No I am a butterfly!” Which is literally the symbol of her debut album. So yes, Taylor Swift singing a song called ME! with a butterfly as a symbol for who she is and also the first image she chose to represent herself on her very first album? ICONIC! Like this is me coming back to myself after playing the snake for awhile.

Michaela

Is that Travis in the audience?? I know he first saw Taylor doing a Me! performance in Lover era and I swear that guy looked a lot like him..

Luis

Ended willow

Luis

This isn‘t even a joke

Léa

Midnights Mayhem with MeHEHe!

Josh G

Only Bon and Em can make me sit through 30 mins of ME!

Luis

HEY!

Josh G

That willow < ME! take is one of the most frightful things I have ever read Luis sir!!!!💀

mieke

my theory is that she went with ME! as a single because of the lyric in End Game ("reputation precedes me"). you know, so that reputation literally precedes ME!

mieke

💀

Ava Jeffs

yay, can’t wait to watch :) it’s so iconic that you guys ended with lover era and midnights is like the darker sister to daylight. Midnights will definitely make us appreciate her message with daylight at an even deeper level than before. Although she doesn’t want to be defined by what haunts her in the middle of the night, she’s ready to confront those demons with midnights.

MarkH

The thing is that ME! is true to Taylor, I think. It is a glitter gel pen song, and she has a lot of glitter gel pen in her soul. She has always had some childish innocence at her core, that she tries to hold onto even as an adult. Adults should be allowed to be silly sometimes. I still agree that it was bad for her image for this to be the lead single, and encouraged shallow people to think that ME! was all of her, instead of just a part of her. Real people are complicated and contain multitudes, and we don't allow our celebrities to be complicated.

Shannon

Yes to tiny desk!!!

Steven Hanley

The tiny desk performance was great, I really want Brendon's pink boots, fun times

Beth

Great vid✨ Yes to tiny desk 💗 would also love you guys to do her capital jingle bell ball 2019 performance 💗 xx

Maria Carmen

Yessss Ava, like always spilling the hot tea!!! 🍵 I adore the parallels and if you think about it RED is also connected to Lover and we just got her TV 😪😪

Ariel Baker

Me! is catchy and fun, love the marching band drum in this song. Those performaces are everything and sooo sparkly glitter gel pen lyrics. The butterfly changing colour is superior.

Sarah Sandell

I would love for you to react to her artist of the decade performance🤩 That one is ICONIC!!!😍

Ash

I think in Miss Americana when they are recording ME! she says "I just want little kids to be like there's no one like me!" So I really think she did ME! for her younger audience.

Ileana Isabel

What you said about Lover trying to recreate the success of 1989, I saw someone on tiktok talk about this too. Like she was going for the same vibe that Shake It Off had, being playful and fun, but didn't quite reach the same level of success, like as I've seen people thought ME was part of a soundtrack for an animated movie, can't remember the name now, but it was a little of a shock to people, I think. While I do think that ME is still a side of her, probably wasn't what the people were expecting as a lead single. Also, again I will die on this hill, the order of the tracks on Lover is weird, it doesn't work, in my opinion 🙈🙈 too all over the place. Maybe if that was different too, Lover wouldn't have received as much backlash But anyways, I agree with you guys that Lover needed to end when it did, and needed to be what it was for Folklore and Evermore to be Folklore and Evermore

Ileana Isabel

Now, about the video. I don't know if anyone's said this here, but when I'm watching the video with headphones I can only hear from the left side. It's only on the talking bits, the performance sounds normal, and when I try to play other things it also sounds normal. I don't know if anyone also has this issue?? I asked about it on discord too, but only Ash responded lol

MarkH

I thought this was just my headphones or something. I too noticed this.

Ileana Isabel

Wait, I think she might have performed on The Voice because I think that is the year she was invited as like a "super star" coach or idk how they called it, idk if you guys have seen the voice, i don't know much, but sometimes the coaches bring people to like give advice and stuff. But I think she was brought on to like help all the coaches, like a special guest of the show. I don't know if you guys have seen those clips of her singing the song of all the states 🙈🙈 I'm pretty sure it's from that

Ileana Isabel

https://youtu.be/Yzl61ni6KT8 This is for the state song 🙈🙈 is really funny and adorable I've seen clips of this on a few edits, so that's how I know this happened xd idk if you guys have seen it before, but maybe you could watch these videos too? It's also from Lover era so it's not so far off from where we are heheh 😉

Dany Rv

Guys!! This Me (BMA) and the I did something bad (AMA’s) performances are my favorites so I’m so excited to have your reaction!!! I know not everyone agree with me but I do like ME! A friend that is not a Swifty saw this ME performance and told me I’m going to start listening to her, she is iconic. So she was focused on new audiences. Lover had a huge pressure! She wanted to show that she could do what she couldn’t before with her previous record label and that she could still be Taylor Swift without them. So she wanted to talk about politics, she wanted to be inclusive, and she wanted it to be a bop just to have more and knew audiences and make this album huge. So the pressure was there. I agree DBATC and Cruel summer should’ve been the singles, though I understand why she did it this way. Sorry this was too long 🤣But I’m always defending Lover haha and I completely understand your point💗

Val Flores

Omg Tiny Desk would be amazing

Val Flores

Also I actually always loved ME lol

tillie

Didn't she also say in the documentary that the point of ME! is to be for the children (and obvs rest of us too) and that she wants everybody to think that there will never be somebody like you. That you are special the way you are and you should celebrate it. After that I fell in love with the song too. It's catchy but it has its meaning as well <3

Ileana Isabel

Lol you actually mention it later in the video🙈🙈 I still think it would be fun to watch hehe😅😅

MarkH

I'm with you, Daniela. And the people are too; Taylor only has 8 songs with over 600 million streams, and 3 of them are from Lover; ME!. YNTCD, and Lover itself. Both Cruel Summer and Paper Rings have gone viral over the last 8 months and are rising fast; Paper Rings is about to pass champagne problems to become her 30th most streamed song (which is a bit unjust if you ask me, but Paper Rings is a bop). If ever there was a song with viral potential for the future, it is I Think He Knows. Lover is currently her most streamed album, but that title should justly belong to 1989 (or maybe Midnights!) and so is unlikely to last forever. Lover is a huge success and it has staying power!

Kate

thank you for this, hadn't seen the voice performance before and totally agree it was better then the first one. Yes to tiny desk, I love that :)

Erica

I really don’t think Taylor has as much power as you think when picking singles. She has talked about how R&D teams pick her singles. She mentioned it when she talked about how All Too Well was never picked for a single! So I think this was result of her team.. not necessarily all her fault.

MarkH

Well, I think Taylor's power to pick singles today is total. Under Scott Borchetta, I agree it was quite limited. Lover was perhaps transitional. She had more power than under Scott, but not the total power that the incredible success of the surprise drop of folklore gave her. Hard to say exactly.

Erica

I agree! I think the fact that she is working with a new label does raise question marks in this area. Like, do they let her have total control? It seems like a stretch to think that absolutely no one else gets a say. But I do hope now Taylor has veto power once they pick her singles! As she should 💙

Lauren May

Please react to tiny desk!! Love you guys

kienan

Tiny Desk 100%

Jenn Hamel

LEST we forget that Brenden wrote the bridge and the “hey kids!” Bit. My guess is Taylor never really loved it but wasn’t gunna tell him that off the bat…and then after the criticism quietly removed it from the recording ☠️

sharon teles

Hope we get another Brendon collab one day

chatsandreacts

AVA yes its actually so iconic because Lover has ties to RED which we just came out of and it seems to be tying into Midnights as well, it was the perfect in between album, I have a feeling we will come back to lover after midnight eventually as well!! 🫶🏼

chatsandreacts

ahhh thanks Ileana, I think it was something I did whilst editing, so sorry!!

Joe Weaver

She was at a weird time here with the mainstream audience. Rep wasn't that well received (even if we all know its superior) & then it's like ME! and you know, if you didn't know better, I think you are getting the wrong impression of who she is as an artist because of the single choices with both rep & Lover. 1989's were perfect and the results proved it. She struggled here. And folklore really did redeem her in a lot of ways. Now Lover era is very different if the singles are Lover, Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street & YNTCD (for the statement it made). So It goes....

Joe Weaver

Taylor's streaming stats are all screwed up because of the 3-year hiatus. 1989 would be miles ahead of everything if it had its first three years of existence in there. Shake It Off & Blank Space would be near 2 billion. The album would be around 10 billion. It deservedly would be one of the most streamed albums of all-time.

Joe Weaver

Taylor was spectacular as the Mega Mentor or whatever it was called on this season of The Voice. She was an advisor on another season too. This was before my Swiftie days and I remember being very impressed by how she helped the contestants out

MarkH

Yes, absolutely, Joe. That's why I said 1989 should be her most streamed album; because if streaming reflected the true reality, it would be.

Viv

I don't listen to this song and I do think it most likely stalled her momentum during the album rollout, BUT I will always appreciate it as a single because without it she would not have Benji.

intandem

Ummm false god on SNL! SO GOOD!!!!

Cinetati

I totally disagree on your take of Lover as an album not being 100% Taylor!! I think it's just a part of her that she never shown before this album and if we don’t feel like it's part of her it's because we're not used to it... Also Me is soooo good and using the word like childish and immature to describe it as a not good song is wrong because it's the point of the song!! We all have a part of us that is childish and we should actually celebrate it and get more in touch with it and this song is the perfect way to do it!! Also when she wrote all of Lover the scooter drama hadn’t happened so the songs can't reflect that too... Tbh I don't think Lover has a bad song on it!!

Naomi Stern

tiny desk next! Then the SNL performances :) ME isn't a great single, but we have to admit that the performances were a serve

tay

wait omg omg i want to cry saying this but why does the voice performance seem like it had major auto tune and almost like she’s not really even singing a few of the parts? 😭😭😰😰🫣

tay

not the whole time!!! you can clearly hear her voice and the little differences when she’s out of breath at a bunch of different times… but it’s just occasional i guess?? i’m asking because i’m curious if the voice itself was a factor in it, maybe a team altering the production because that was what the show wanted?!

Maria Carmen

Very interesting Mark, thanks for sharing and completely agree!

Dany Rv

💗💗💗 Can you imagine Jack saying that?? 🥹🤣

Dany Rv

I didn’t know this!! So iconic😍

Jennifer

All hail! All hail!

Nitya Kadambi

Late to watching this, but I loved this breakdown! I totally agree and think that Lover could have been a perfect album had it been about 12-14 tracks and a bit more stripped back. It is funny to think that Taylor once described the aesthetic of this album looking like wooden floors & more rustic (I'm referencing a 2019 rolling stone interview). Sonically I don't think she quite achieved this aesthetic, with the exception of a few songs (Lover, Cornelia st, Daylight, Death by a Thousand Cuts, Soon You'll Get Better - to name a few). Also, I'm curious to know if you were to create your "ideal" Lover album (no more than 14 tracks), what songs would you include and in what order?

Jessikah

Lover is one of my top albums so it’s soo hard to hear the ME! Backlash without feeling personally offended. I think in a way the positivity is such a departure from Rep that it really set the tone for this softer side on Lover. Saying that, I do think she should have led with Cruel Summer!

Marissa

It's interesting all the hate and conversation around Me! as a single. In my mind, us adult swifties just weren't as much the target audience. Even in the Miss Americana documentary she said she was picturing kids singing along saying "theres's no one like me!" It's not a bad song it's just more for kids I think. And of course it's such a fun song and adults can enjoy it too!

Katrina

The thing that kills me about Me! is that the first verse has such Blank Space vibes, in that "I'll make you hate that you love me and I'll only let you go once I've wrecked your life" way, but then it turns into bubble gum pop instead of keeping that edge.
