12:45 you was so right!!!

Allie Ladner

I really like the man, contrary to popular opinion. I looooove the sarcasm.

Allie Ladner

Also the wording of it… just like if I was a man I’d be THE man. She’s pretty much saying y’all hate my success on the sole basis of me being a women bc if all I changed was my sex y’all would think I’m the best. Idk just very creative way of saying that with little words

Crystal

This one isn’t loading for me :(

Fede

i am SO GLAD i've finally fathomed lover, i though i would never have a moment with this album (for the genre, bubblegum pop is not usually for me). but there are seriously some gems i was overlooking! count me in as a "you need to calm down" and "the man" apologist here 😇🫶😋

Mille Kragerup

I loooove the man music video! It’s so savage + have you guys seen the theory that Taylor might announce something today?

Joe Weaver

What happened to the video for Lover? Or did you do this already and I forgot? Anyway!!!

farah abed

so i can’t watch this yet cause i’m at work but my oh my can i just say how GORGEOUS u both are?!!♥️♥️ #offensive

Maria Carmen

Em at 05:49 singing DBATC is giving me life 😂🤣

Steven Hanley

Such an amazing video, the role reversals, the things Taylor points out, great breakdown too!

Goretti

I think the music video is genius, however i do agree that the song would have appealed to the general public more with a different production. The way i would describe it is that i listen to the song despite the production. What do you guys think?

Steven Hanley

Mentioned early that it is coming as the next lover breakdown video, we can look forward to it!

Steven Hanley

It surprises me how often some fans seem to dislike the more poppy happy songs such as Shake it off or Me! really excellent songs and videos portraying concepts well, Lover is full of a lot of really clever music and that it is Taylor's first album owned by Taylor I suspect she worked hard with messages and ideas she may not have so easily gotten onto previous albums, and deciding to let Taylor be Taylor to a large extent too (rainbow positive, empowering messaging)

Maria Carmen

"Imagine being so frightful that you inspire The Man by Taylor Swift" 😅

MarkH

Loved this video. You did not comment on the captions at the end, which are also epic: "Owned by Taylor Swift" "No men were harmed during the making of this video". I'm agreeing with Ore above; the video is much better than the song. In fact, the video is a contender for best music video she ever did, but the song is not. It did win her Best Direction at the VMAs. All the Lover-era videos are great, actually! I loved your analysis of why Lover was not a huge hit, although remember it was a number one album and out-sold every other album in 2019. But it never achieved the cultural icon status of 1989 or folklore, or even what Midnights already has. And I do think Joel Little is part of the issue. He produced "The Man", "Miss Americana", YNTCD, ME!, and Only the Young. Those are the songs that are instantly catchy, but don't hold up as well (in my opinion). And they were the singles (except Lover itself) so they were what people heard. The Jack Antonoff and even the Frank Dukes-Louis Bell songs are still super-poppy, but have a more creative feel to me that holds up better over time. Did you see how Leo has to dump the Titanic now because the movie is over 25?

Dswiftie

Thank you so much for this video. You are right what an iconic video to break down. Taylor put a lot of thought and work into this song and video. I was surprised that the song didn't do better just based on how truthful and clever it was. You both are looking very lovely I must say. I have been noticing the new hair and I am definitely loving it for both of you. Thank you so much Em for the song during the brief intermission break. I loved it. Just think about what is coming our way. I think we are in for it. We really have no idea what is about to really mess us up with midnights. Thank you so much for keeping us fed while we are waiting. I think the fact that we will be getting our reaction from Paris is iconic also. Lots of love from Ky.

Stevie

Thanks for praising men who sincerely respect, endorse and support the message of this wonderful video 👍🏻. I would have loved a little appreciation for “The Rock” on his participation and his ongoing support for Taylor despite of being quite an amount of man.

Amanda Mittelman

“Men have really rebranded anger as not an emotion” 😂💀

Amy Woolridge

'BO$$ SCOTCH' - every time I see it it reminds me of a slight play on words with 'Scott Borschetta' ... thoughts!!! Love u guys <33

Jade

Taylor Swift really is a feminist icon and this song and video just prove it. Also about her dad, it reminded me of the discussion in Miss Americana about how she felt about communicating on politics and how he and the other men in the room were against it. She isn’t afraid of going against what men in her life think is best for her, because she knows better and I loooove that 💖

Amanda Mittelman

Also, I agree that lover has the cringe “sprinkled in”, but I think of it as like when you have a group of friends and then one of them gets in a really good relationship. You’re happy for her, but it changes the dynamics. i.e. Taylor was probably at such a secure spot in her relationship with Joe when she was writing Lover that she couldn’t help but be a bit cheesier/bubble gum pop, it’s literally just how she was feeling and she’s always so authentic to her emotions. She really said, this is our house, we make the rules. And in this house (album) she is who she is. I don’t really think Reputation is her vibe (although SO needed at the time to take back her power) when she’s the most comfortable and in a safe, supportive environment. Really, she’s the same girl who grew up dreaming about Romeo and Juliet, castles and grand staircases, muddy truck tires and back yard swings with your childhood sweetheart. She’s a LOVER not a fighter, and I just love that she really embraced that (and whatever cringe came with it) because she knew this was the first album that was HERS and she probably wanted it to express the joy and giddiness that would have stirred up in her.

Ash

So I just learned recently that the scene where he (she) is playing tennis and pointing her finger at Scott screaming, was taken from Serena Williams doing it. And she was using it to show that people bad mouthed Serena for getting emotional so she had a man do it to show that people don’t care if a guy does it but they freak out when a woman does it. Also I’ve been told so many times by guys that I need to smile more. But the worst thing that was probably ever said to me happened at work last year. An older man came up to me while I was putting items on the bottom shelf, and said “they got you on your knees where you belong” 🤦‍♀️

rowan

this breakdown made me appreciate the video even more ❤️ i still remember watching it when it premiered live and being so shocked by the end credit reveal that it was her. my dumbass never realized that was taylor the entire time 😭😭😭😭 i was beginning to catch on close to the end but it didnt hit me until then haha. no where near being one of my favourite videos from her but its still GENIUS

Cecilia Sparke

Can I just say Bonnie, you look amazing in that tomato red outfit, the colour really suits you!

Cecilia Sparke

Observation: is she peeing in 'glitter gel pen'?? I think she is but I really don't know what that means...

Joe Weaver

Thanks, Steven. Got the notification. Got excited about saying something before I watched!

Juliana

Bonny I may have to get my brunette hair highlighted because of you - you're looking so iconic

Emily

bonny your hair is looking so OFFENSIVE i literally love it

Richard

I LOVE the video and reaction you always have a lot of insightful comments. I am a man from Canada and I love the video and song. It doesn't bother me one bit. Only men who are those things get upset about it. It's like holding up a mirror.

Stevie

Of course I’ve seen this indeed incredible performance 👍🏻. And after reading your kind reminder I watched it again. Thanks for the link Mark ✌🏻🎼🕺💃

Julia

The man written in glitter gel pen on the subway wall is iconic! This video is definitely superior to the song, I love all the references and the messages she is conveying. The ending is perfect and it is seriously amazing that she is showing that if a man got upset like Serena Williams did, no one would care. Yet so much drama when a woman does it. Frightful! What you guys said about men not understanding that anger IS an emotion is so true!

Julia

Love you both! Can't wait for tiny desk and lover in paris reactions!

Jaimie C

Love the breakdown! I think her videos from Lover really help with appreciating the songs. Her message in The Man got lost in production but brought back to life in the video (thanks to HER vision & direction!). I love a good social/political song and The Man is up there! Plus, love the connection to Mad Woman...yep "you made her that way". ICONIC!

Hannah S

The “Women’s Charity” tennis match has the same energy as Jake having a “fuck the patriarchy” key chain. It’s like you publicly act like you care about women but in your day to day life you are frightful towards them.

Hannah S

Also both of your hair is looking stunning in this video. ❤️

Hannah S

“No men were harmed” haha how did I never notice that!

Lizzie Page

As a straight white man, let me just say...we are the worst 🤦🏽‍♂️🤣

Jaimie C

I watched another YT breakdown (Suffi Reax) and his take on 'the man' leaving the woman in the bedroom/apt and getting all the high fives was maybe a commentary on the high fives/praise a man gets for a one night stand. Rewatching, it does look like he is leaving her apartment, 'sneaking out' while she's still sleeping.

Erica

I also don’t ever listen to The Man! I LOVE the lyrics but absolute hate how the music was produced. It’s just such an elementary beat. And that’s all you really get is du dum du dum.. I prefer listening to her playing it live in Paris. Much superior version to me ❤️

MarkH

I'm sorry to hear that last story, Ash. That could have been something to complain to the HR department about. I could hardly blame you for thinking that would be pointless, but change only happens through repeated demands for it. Maybe other people have complained about this guy too.

Jaimie C

Well now, majority yes but not all. lol Also, allies are needed. Thank you for being an ally and leaving the mansplaining at the door! :)

MarkH

Just to defend tennis a little bit, it is actually an issue when male tennis players behave this way too. They do get penalized, and it does make the papers. I completely agree that Serena was treated worse, but tennis does not ignore male bad behavior.

Ash

Oh it was a customer not an employee. I did tell my manager who was pissed that someone said that to me. He made me go show him who it was but the customer had left before I could point him out. But even to this day is blows my mind how some people think it’s okay to say stuff like that to other people.

Jaimie C

50 years later didn't make sense to me, cuz you know...numbers...rewatched it and it's 58 years later...and we all know what 5+8 equals!!! K, now that makes sense. lol

Kathleen

Considering we all collectively are using "The Man Wall" to figure out timing of re-recordings... It just clicked to me that the way we as a fandom are moving through that wall is in a clockwise motion... Midnights??? Especially with the glittery blue writing of "The Man" itself being the color of Midnights??? The only thing that wouldn't make sense is that Speak Now by that logic would've already been out, but perhaps by our logic and knowing the lawsuit maybe it really was her plan all along to drop Speak Now TV so soon after Red TV???

Marie S.

I love that you are a little bit more comfortable/unhinged in this patron only videos!!!

Dany Rv

B just want to say how stunning you look!! The new look is here to stay!!

Leilani Willcox

Guysss! What if the Album titles on the block wall are like a clock!! It makes sense, because Fearless is in the position of a 1 on a clock, then Red is next, then Speak Now etc! Thoughts?!

Alison

The bedroom scene is important because of the way his shadow eclipses her as he's leaving the room. She as a person and in her career will be thought of differently because of having a casual encounter, while he will walk out into a room of high fives for doing the same thing. She is laying in the sun in the bed, and he is completely dark walking away, then the eclipse is shown as well.

Dany Rv

I agree, like for me it is a bop and I do like it like this, though it could’ve been bigger with a different production 100%

Dany Rv

Sooo agree with you!!!

C

That scene where he's getting high fived down the hallway I think was meant to speak on the fact that men get praised for sex in a way women do NOT

Ariel Baker

Emily you sharing your thoughts from 25.56 is just so freaking on point. Being told to smile more by a man.. frightful! and Bonny saying how we are made to feel like our purpose is to decorate the world.... I can't tell you how much I feel this attitude from men while dating and it 100% puts me off! Frightful!

MsWaldo2009

The Poster saying: Mother Nature does not stand a chance” ist just basically stating how unnatural the Patriarchy is. There’s a brilliant book by a German Author that covers this topic saying, in nature everything goes back to female choice.

Joe Weaver

Ok so a lot of what I was going to say got covered in the post-video chat! Because when I first heard/saw this song it was my pre-Swiftie days and I recall thinking, "didn't Beyoncé already do this with If I Were A Boy?" And they aren't exactly the same when you really break them down but to a more casual listener of mainstream music I know I was kinda 😐 about this because I thought that at the time. The Lover era is frustrating because I think we know a rollout of Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street, Lover could have worked so much better but...so be it. Also, the graffiti wall, if we are going Red-Fearless-SN-rep-Debut-1989... ITS A CLOCK! Or it would be following around like a clock does. Last thing, where Taylor is right now is so interesting because I would argue she has more fans than she ever has and yet outside of the fan base...she hasn't had a true mainstream, world dominating, everyone knows it hit song since... 1989 era? I know LWYMMD was big but not for the reasons I think most of her songs before were. Anything else on rep? I don't think any of the Lover songs got there. folklore & evermore weren't intended for it. Is Style the last one? I'm not sure everybody knows Wildest Dreams or OOTW. Trying to use my pre-Swiftie brain to answer this one. I think it might be. Hmm... OK, that's plenty of me for now. Goodbye. (Edit: "OK a lot of what I was going to say was covered..." proceed to writing novel. 😂

Micah

Also can we talk about how the wall is similar to the Coney Island bridge? "Were you waiting at our old spot In the tree line by the gold clock Did I leave you hanging every single day?"- Fearless "Were you standing in the hallway With a big cake, happy birthday" - Red "Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray?" -Speak Now (Dear John) "A universe away" -Reputation "And when I got into the accident The sight that flashed before me was your face" -1989 I think this might also have something to do with the order of the rerecordings...

chatsandreacts

oh yeah we kinda skipped it haha, it will be the next video though 🫶🏼

chatsandreacts

yesss such a good point! love it, thank god we had lover it was so important.

chatsandreacts

hahah your titanic comment made me giggle! I completely agree with you here Mark, so well said as always, Joel's production has a tacky feel that the rest of the album didn't... its surprising actually Joel worked on the Gracie album we just reacted to and we had a whole moment with that and his other past work with lorde that is amazing. Can't wait to hear what you think of that! :)

chatsandreacts

haha thank you for this beautiful comment Donna! We are seriously in for a RIDE 🫶🏼

chatsandreacts

The rock is definitely an iconic man that can stay!

chatsandreacts

Yes i was thinking about that too... she loves her Dad but still stands up to him when needing to!

chatsandreacts

This was a lovely comment to read and I totally agree!!!!

chatsandreacts

gosh that is so horrible Ash, I am so sorry someone said that to you!! How unfortunate that as women we have so many stories like this...

chatsandreacts

Love hearing it helps you appreciate more!! Truly was a genius concept!!

chatsandreacts

omg you are right.... maybe its a hint that its her under there haha

chatsandreacts

THANKYOU 😭 Its been a bit of a journey lately but starting to love it again!

chatsandreacts

totally agree Richard, thank you for being an iconic man in this world!

chatsandreacts

wow thats such a great point Jaimie, the lover videos were so good for that!

chatsandreacts

Yes thank you for finding the right words I could not haha PERFECT!

chatsandreacts

tea tea tea tea HOT teaaaaaa omg maybe you are right DAMN that sucks for her plannnnn

Richard

Thanks. I try to be. Kelsea Ballerini just released an album. I am hoping if you can react to the album. It is called Subject to Change. She is a friend to Taylor.

Dswiftie

hillary where in ky are you from?

chatsandreacts

hahah Joe love all your thoughts thank you!! THE CLOCK is mind blowing wow I guess TIME will tell!! It is fascinating about the fanbase growing regardless of hit songs... Thats just how good her albums are...I think her and her fans are changing the way music is listened to... i mean I don't listen to the radio, I listen to her albums... so does she really need those hits anymore? although I wonder if midnights will contain that next hit...

Dswiftie

you might be right.

Ash

It really is, and even sadder that a lot of men don’t even see what’s wrong with stories like these. To them it’s a joke and women should be “less sensitive”

Ash Bell

I just fathomed that when Taylor as the man leaves the room that has the girl in the bed and she runs out into the hallway and is being high-fived, it is probably a dig at the fact that men get praised for having sex, but women get shamed. Bonny and Em, you probably meant this by what you said in the video but I just fathomed it 😂

gracie

Loren Gray, the social media influencer in the tennis scene, refers to her fanbase as "angels", which makes me think of "devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes"!!! The emphasis on her rolling her eyes in the shot is concerning lol .. Just another cruel summer nod that makes me believe Taylor had plans to release cruel summer as a single in early 2020 -- but obviously plans had to change for everyone

Maya

"And you'll poke that bear 'til her claws come out and you find something to wrap your noose around" really is a different level of lyricism that no song on Lover stands a chance against.

Ally ❤️

You missed that the pee on the wall was blue sparkly pee: e.g. the next “most recent” album release will be Midnights! THE MASTERMIND OF IT ALL 😬😱😱😱

Miriam Hart

Yes!!! I was just coming to comment this!!!

Cristina

Yess. Mad woman is like the superior 2.0 version of the man. Like it says everything in a more authentic and harder hitting way
