TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  Fundamental Portrait Sketching For Beginners

I've been working hard on this weeks tutorial that is packed with everything you need to know about sketching portraits! I've added most of the references that I'll be referring to above.

But I am curious, what type of portraits do you like to sketch? Do you prefer to sketch larger detailed portraits or do you just like to add people to your urban sketches that have smaller, less detailed faces? Please let me know in the poll below!

(There are different reasons people like to sketch portraits and it often changes the process and speed at which we sketch)

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 18th March: Urban Sketching - Trees and plants in a scene

Week Starting 25th March: People Sketching - Crowd of figures (Sketched very small size)

Week Starting 1st April: Urban Sketching - Building

You have caused so much joy in my life. Sketching and painting now I have just gotten back after raising children. I hope your spouse and children are respecting what you do even though it takes away from them. I think you are the best gal or fella who does what you do. You r the best. Every time I see your face I smile.

I would like to have more tutorials of people in an urban sketching context. I am hoping to join an urban sketching group where we are headed in Baja California. From what I have seen of their work they are more likely to be sketching people in scenes rather than portraits. Thank you Scottie.

Lorna Graham

I just enjoy sketching people Scottie so either will please me. If I can get a likeness then I’m happy 😊 Thanks for all these tutorials, it’s so much fun and inspiring 🙌🏻

merci Scottie, ,j'ai opté pour un mélange des deux...j'aime ENORMEMENT travailler avec tes tuttos!!! as tu vu mon dernier mail? belle journée à tous!!!

Petra

I have the same opinion as Lorna. Everything we learn from Scottie helps us move forward. ...by the way-:]I love more large and detailed...

Laura Collee

Scottie, could we please put figures on a beach?

Ruth Loewen

I'd like you to do both in separate lessons over time. Smaller would be a slight preference for the upcoming lesson.

Karen

I never thought I’d be able to say I enjoy sketching people, but thanks to you, I can now. And even happily embrace my mistakes. Of course I want to keep getting better and these tutorials are making it possible. Little and often is my new motto. 🧡

Karen King

I lean toward the smaller since I primarily draw in sketchbooks these days. But voted for both just because it would be really nice to be able to draw a decent resemblance of family members to include in these books.

Chris Carver

I really want to learn to draw hands

My Day Off

I am delighted so many people of this sketching community take time to vote. It shows me the same people are taking the time to use the wonderful skills Scottie presents and work on their sketching skills. Thank you, Scottie.

I learned so so much from your lesson on lips, nose, ears, eyes where you would show both options with the same reference, so I could really see how your decision making is changing depending on which context you were choosing. Portraits in that format would be so damn cool.

A mix of both is ideal Scottie. Large detailed portaits would be good a great addition.
