TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  Portrait Sketching - Quick Small Faces

How do you find sketching very small faces? These might be faces we draw when sketching a group of figures and we just want to hint at some of the facial features. Often we can be happy with the figure but the face seems overworked.

I hope to show you a slightly different approach than I use when sketching larger portraits. We have done similar exercises like this before but it's good to revisit and practice this on a collection of references.

Let me know what you'd like to learn below!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Noses and lips would be what I'd love to see a lot of focus on.

Suzanne Taylor

My challenge exists in creating facial features as it relates to the size of the sketch. For instance 1” head equals just lines….no pupils, full nose or referential lines etc.

Karen Ericka Newby

I'd be interested in learning how to render the characteristics which makes each of them unique. So that it's not just an accessory, a hat, or hair colour, but something in their features that differentiates them.

How to draw a simplified and realistic face, what elements to focus on?

Lorna Graham

I sometimes over sketch the eyes and it can then ruin the face. I love to have just simple lines as to me it gives a real impact ( like yours do) 😁 so I’ll say how to keep all the features simple. Thanks Scottie 😊

Petra

FranM

I never find faces easy so I'm looking forward to this.
