TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:   Portraits - Looking UP & DOWN

Making a face appear to be looking up or down is an interesting challenge. Many of the proportions we usually use have to be slightly modified. Have you ever tried sketching a face like this?

Let me know in the poll below if you have found a certain facial feature challenging. If you haven't ever tried sketching this angle, what feature looks the most challenging to you?

UPDATE PLANNING & PERSONAL:

Every so often I like to give you a behind the scenes update so you can better understand what I'm planning for the rest of the year.

My goal for this year was to cover every fundamentals topic in detail for urban sketching, portraits and people sketching. It's coming together really well and I hope to then reorganise my fundamentals videos on Patreon so they are easier to follow as a set of courses for a complete beginners to work through. That's why most of the tutorials lately (and towards the end of the year) are 'in-depths' on a certain subject rather than simply choosing a nice reference to sketch. I'm excited to be getting closer to finishing this and I wanted to thank everyone for your input each week! My big plan in the future is the convert these into packaged courses and maybe even a set of books 😅.

In terms of personal updates, my family and I have a vacation booked for the first two weeks of October. I have prerecorded some fun tutorials for that period which I'm sure you'll enjoy!

Also, I haven't mentioned this before, but my 8 year old daughter was born with a blind eye and it's come to the point where the doctors have recommended that the eye should be removed and replaced with a glass eye. This is because the blind eye is unhealthy (wasn't fully formed at birth) and needs lots of medicated eye drops to remain comfortable for her. We are on the hospital waiting list and are expecting/hoping it to happen in the next few months. I have a spare tutorial that I'll use for that time so I'm available for her. It should only be a couple of days in hospital and my wife will take work off as well so we can both support her in recovery. It's supposed to be a fairly simple procedure and will provide her with a lot of comfort for the future. So although we are slightly apprehensive we are also looking forward to the issues with the eye being resolved for her.

Thanks for reading all my updates! 🤗

Facing down, I think. Won’t know until I try.

Karen King

I'd say I need help in all those categories....up AND down.

Karen King

Thanks for sharing your family information. Just want to let you know my husband had one glass eye and after he told me, I never thought about it again. They are so good about it these days, and they look amazingly real. He never had any problems either that I'm aware of. Once she has adjusted to it she will probably be relieved from the discomfort and bother of dealing with all the eyedrops.

Bernie

Definitely all of the above!

Michelle Moody

I think these will be a nice challenge. Also can we find a haunted looking house to sketch in October??? That would be so fun!

Best wishes to your daughter and family as you enter the challenges of medical care.

Lilith Uhler

Best wishes for your daughter! My good friend is going through this with her daughter as well. I’m sure your nerves are a little wracked, but a few months from now it’ll all be behind you :)

Lilith Uhler

I watched a documentary on an artist who paints prosthetics, including glass eyes. It was fascinating. I will see if I can find it again. I bet your daughter might enjoy seeing the artistry behind it and how excited people are when they receive their prostheses.

David G.

Facing down seems more challenging to me; can’t explain the reason, though. Scottie, good to hear you’re developing your tutorials into comprehensive courses. I’m sure your other Patreon members would agree that putting your family’s needs above ours is essential. Looking forward to hearing good news about your daughter!

Jan Mullan

Thank you Scottie, 🙏🏻🙏🏻for your family. I am recovering from back surgery and enjoying the time to catch up on watching your videos! Take care!

Best wishes for your daughter. With the kindness that one can feel in your classes, I have no doubt that she is well supported in this process.

Kathy Campbell

Support your family xx everything else can wait .

Lorna Graham

I don’t often sketch a face looking downwards Scottie so I will go with all of the above. Sending big hugs to you Scottie, your family and especially your daughter. Thank you for sharing, look forward to this all being behind you very soon 🙏🏻

Kerstin

I just tried sketch my sister from a photo where her head is in upwards angle. And it didnt turn out well. So looking forward to this tutorial. And all the best wishes for your daughter. Hopefully you dont have to wait to long as waiting time can be stressfactor too. Oh, and you also go on vacation. How exciting. Where will you go to?

Claude

Facing down! Above all I wish your daughter an easy and successful operation!

Geertje

I chose „all of the above", although somehow the nose, whilst looking up, seems the most challenging part for me. I wouldn't be sure what to do with the nostrils. All the best your daughter. Hopefully the waiting passes by quickly and she'll have a speedy recovery

Michael Coleman

I also chose "all of the above" as it really depends upon the face, orientation and other factors. I note that the two portraits are "face on." I would actually find these easier as there are plenty of reference points (corners or centers of the eyes, width of the eyes are the same, etc.) on the face to draw "face on" figures. Harder is the face that is up or down and at an angle as they often obscure many of the otherwise useful reference points. Many well wishes for your daughter. Family first!

Patricia Ann

Thanks for sharing,,my prayers are with you and your family. May all go well. Enjoy your holiday. I am new at all this and find faces of any kind challenging

Gwen Marriott

Hi , thank you for your update. Wishing you all well with your daughter’s procedure and recovery. I would just like to add that since becoming a Patreon my drawing has improved and I am enjoying art projects much more!

FranM

Enjoy your holiday and best wishes for your daughter.

Brian Dudley

Wishing you and your family all the best.

Leo Wilson

I think all the choices will have their own challenge. I am really enjoying the small faces tutorial Scottie so am really looking forward to this one. Best wishes to your daughter and family. Sending all the good vibes for the operation … and holiday 😀

Karen Ericka Newby

Hi Scottie, I ticked all of these, but in reality it's not so much proportions as the effect of gravity on flesh and the shadow cast by the features making the downward tilt very difficult to reproduce without distorting the subject, ie robbing 10 yrs of her youth. Thanks for sharing with us. A well deserved holiday on the horizon is always good news. I just spent 2 weeks in 🇨🇭, there are some great things to sketch there, notably cows, cheese and fast cars ! 🤣 seriously though, looking forward to cars cos I never really grasped the technique and did a lot of cheating the last time i attempted it. Food is another passion of mine, and not just sketching🙄. It really hones your observational skills. Big virtual hug to your daughter. That documentary that Lilith offered sounds just the thing for destressing, what is essentially fear of the unknown.

Mareike Biggam

I chose all if the above, I'm not very good with portraits anyway. Thank you very much for all your work with these tutorials. Best wishes for the OP of your daughter.

Jodi Dawson
