I enjoy sketching small figures in crowded places. Need more practice at simplifying rather than adding too much detail.

I’ve just ventured into doing “live” buildings. Not from photos. But they don’t move. I’m totally intimated trying live people who move even when seeming to be standing or sitting.

Kerstin

I once tried sketch a baby stroller… but before i was halv way, they moved it. That was my closest try to sketch things that can move 😅

I think need to be really fast in loose sketches- freeze an image in our minds before the subjects move /move away completely 😀- that I think is the challenge- besides ofcourse being able to represent the character

Happy to hear the good news about your daughter. All the best to your family!

Good to hear that your daughter is recovering - best wishes to her

Good to hear about your daughter - all my thoughts & best wishes to her. I once tried sketching people on the train - thought to be clever as they move little usually. But: perplex sit very close, so studying their features looking up and down on the paper is obvious and felt very embarrassing... I forced myself not to 'stare', fiddled around on the paper just checking back in the end and stopped after the first person. It felt like intruding into a personal space 🤷‍♀️ Is there a chance to do this more unobstrusive?

I tend to cheat and take a snapshot Scottie so any tips are welcome. I’m in Cornwall next week so I’m hoping to do real life people sketching, pretty excited to try! Great news about your daughter Scottie, thought about you all a lot that day ( although time difference interfered) ☺️ Hope your daughter is out and about really soon 😊

I tried sketching people on a train too and felt the same; hoping the guy didn't think I was staring at him.

I’ve done it several times in 2 botanical gardens, the countryside and an old 1800s school! It was fun but I learned you have to tune out the people passing by that try to peek. Also, I first take a quick photo as a reference for the changes in lighting, people etc. Anxious to learn more! Need training!

Actually I tried....and hated it. My brain is trained for still objects (except my cat)...I'm ready for some tips 🤗

I've tried to add people to my urban sketches and I've taken a number of classes on people sketching, but have not been successful. Reviewing your people sketching classes I believe you're teaching exactly what I need. A way to quickly add people to my urban sketches. Thank you for all the hard work you put into each class.

Biggest challenge? Prioritising the time to actually sit down somewhere and do it. Also, I’m used to using flat pictures as reference, not this real life complicated 3D thing🥲

Petra

I always enjoy learning something new, especially people. All the best for your daughter's recovery.

On holiday last week, whilst waiting for a train, my wife encouraged me to do some quick sketches of the people around us. It was surprisingly good fun. The only issue was that people were inconsiderate and kept moving! I'd get engrossed in some detail, say, a backpack, then look up to find that they'd gone.
