TUTORIAL FOR THIS FRIDAY:   How To Sketch A Town Scene (Available 1st Nov)

This week I'll be making a tutorial all about sketching a town by the water. Most of these references are from Cinque Terra in Italy and one is from Austria. (My wife and I travelled to Cinque Terra about 10 years ago and really enjoyed it!)

I'd love to hear from you which reference you are drawn to the most and why in the comments. They all look nice to me but I like 2 and 4 the most. Interested to see what everyone else thinks!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 8th November: Portrait Sketching - Child to Elderly - Development stages

Friday 15th November: Urban Objects - How to sketch anything!

Friday 22nd November: People Sketching

Great pictures! So hard to choose!!

Sue

Because it looks so serene, and would be wonderful to live there.

Leo Wilson

With all the water in No. 4 scene it provides me with the biggest obstacle. And No 3 is my second choice.

Kerstin

I love them all 4 🤣🙆🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️. I prefer number one, as the buildings are small and not so easy to catch when there is no “main focus point” at one spot, but the whole scenery is the focus point? Hope its understandable what i try to say 😬

Mary L Doty

I just love the sky in #3! They all have nice details.

Sabrina M

Do I recognize the church in #2 from a prior tutorial?! Only it was close up and a winter scene? Looks so similar, it would be great to have it in another picture from a different perspective!

Karen

I like #2 because it has background mountains, water with reflections and a good variety of types of buildings. All of which make a challenging tutorial to attempt.

Number 2 for me. As a beginner it seems to be the least complex but at the same time an interesting subject.

Fran Cooper

I’ve been to Hallstatt, so it’s definitely my choice. A picture perfect town.

Karen Ericka Newby

Number 4 for me, it's the boats open moored in the port, as well as the two layers of superimposed buildings.

Saskia

Hi Scottie, wow 🥰 ehhhh… hard to choose 🙈 how about all 4 of them 😅😂 Also I have a question… it’s ‘almost’ christmas and I would like to draw and paint a lovely christmas-shop in front. I imagine in London or something. But I cannot find the right photo. Is this something you could add this in your tutorial ? 😁😁🙏🏻

Marie Cornelis

Merci Scottie..ils sont tous top Mais mon choix serait le 1 et le 4 Merci beaucoup à toi Marie

Peter

All terrific choices ! But it is #1 for me.. The sky is perfect and leads the eye nicely..

Lex Sijtsma

As a beginner I opt for 2.

Johanne

No.2 I like the smooth line of the mountain contrasting with the rooftop line of the buildings. And the rooftop line is very interesting in itself.

Michael Coleman

I think #2. It seems more diverse and picturesque while the other choices seem to be too busy - detailed. I like the sky of #1 but since it takes up half the view, it forces the landscape to be even more crushed into the lower half of the drawing. #3 seems simply too busy for drawing without an expanded canvas and considerable time for detail. I like #4 for its example of perspective but one-third of the picture is devoted to a sky/sea which is mundane or bland.

JusPete

3. You can concentrate on the town and apply other lessons to the sky and boats. Illustrates the pull of color and the placement and attractiveness of the town

Roz

I must admit, I like 2 the best for drawing purposes, but I chose 4 because Cinque Terre is on my bucket list and this will be the closest I get to it for awhile! Can we do both?

Renata B

#3 would be the most difficult for me, that’s why I picked it. They are all very complex so anyone would be a great exercise. Thank you.

Calufe

Me gustan todos 🫣🤯

I think #4 would be interesting to see how you paint all the water & b/c it has the boats

Michele Campbell

I selected 4, but if I were at any of them then it would be that one at that moment! Beautiful references!
