UPCOMING TUTORIAL:   Friday 21st February: Urban Sketching Buildings (Front View)

This Friday we'll be sketching a building in front view (or elevation view). I'm aiming for this to be a very beginner friendly tutorial so I found this photo of a very simple building with a few nice details.

I'm very curious, what would you find the most challenging about this reference? Please let me know in the poll or comments below!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 28th February: Portrait Sketching (Front View Fundamentals)

Friday 7th March: How To Sketch Flowers (Multiple Sketches)

Friday 14th March: People Sketching (Basic Figure Front View)

The curtains and possibly the flowering plants. Nice texture on the roof.

Laetitia Phan

On my end, the hardest is to find the balance between what to omit, to suggest and to depict. So far, I mostly overdo it, nad struggle to discern them (outside of sheer practice which of course helps).

Sharon Foster

Proportions are always a challenge!

Rosie Green

Hi Scottie 😊. For me its where to put the coloured "lowlights", shadows & white highlights...🤔

Nicholas

Hi Scottie, another great subject. My concern is keeping the details at a minimum and keeping the entire sketch loose and simple. I, like a lot of people, get caught up with making all the details looking too precise.

David G.

What to do with the darkness behind the windows.

Chris

For me it is to find the right balance in Details. Which are nice for the picture? I often get lost in too many details.

Carmel Spencer

Particularly getting the roof, repetitive details, also where to stop with including the brickwork.

Ida Johansson

It’s a challenge to me not to make it look completely “flat”. If that makes sense…

Elly

Yay another building! in general for me it's the proportions and the perspective I guess. And not to make shadows either too light or too strong/dark :)

Jan Holden

Definitely the details - particularly the flowers and curtains. It’s going to be an enjoyable learning session.

Printed Jerry

The composition. How can we make this painting impressive, irrespective of its straightforward composition?

Lorna Graham

The roof will cause me some issues Scottie but looking forward to it 😊

Jeffery R Towse

My big problem is preventing the building looking Flat if its just a front view

Kathy S

The shadows look like they could be challenging as does the overall watercolor.

Suzie Truffles

Since I’m new to your schedule, right now, everything’s a challenge, totally enjoyable, but a challenge

Lydia Dardi

Not being a watercolorist, a nice clean watercolor execution is my greatest challenge.

Fran Zygmunt

How much of the other buildings to include, if at all.

Jane Jones

I would get bogged down in the beautiful detail of the roof. Hard not to be distracted by such!

KC Chandler

So far, my results look like a coloring book. I'd like info on how to avoid that look.
