UPCOMING TUTORIAL:   Friday 28th February: Portrait Sketching (Front View Fundamentals)

This week I'll be creating a tutorial about sketching a portrait in front view. While seemingly the easiest view, there are many challenges when sketching a symmetrical face.

What would you find challenging about sketching a direct front view like this? Let me know below in the poll and comment section so I can add it to the tutorial.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 7th March: How To Sketch Flowers (Multiple Sketches)

Friday 14th March: People Sketching (Basic Figure Front View)

Friday 21st March: Urban Sketching (Building In 2 Point Perspective)

Kerstin

The expression/mood of the person.

Fran Cooper

I start at the brows and frequently run out of room toward the mouth/chin. So, basically getting it proportionally correct.

Jane Jones

Every person I’ve ever drawn looks the same. I find it difficult to capture the subtle differences

Mary L Doty

The angle of the nares. If you get that wrong it ruins the entire face.

Mandana

the likeness

Jan Holden

After my first effort with the 3/4 view, I foresee a few laughs with my family on this one. Seriously though I’m looking forward to learning how to approach this. It’s all enjoyable.

Lorna Graham

I love front face portrait sketching Scottie. My big challenge will be to get it as good as yours 😁 😂

Printed Jerry

Beard, how do you make him look for his age

Hi Scottie, When sketching from your tutorials I am often fairly accurate, but when I try to sketch from a photograph of a family member in front view there is a bit of a likeness but the drawing is not really recognizable as the person. I also have trouble with including the hairline as a proportion marker so that seems to be a problem. I have not graduated myself to watercolor yet. Sorry to be so long-winded. ::>)

Ian The head and jaw are tough

Carmel Spencer

The shading & shadows particularly around the cheeks.
