UPCOMING TUTORIAL:  Friday 7th November: Watercolor Basic Beginner Fundamentals

What challenges do you have or had with watercolor as a beginner? I'm making a basics fundamentals tutorial to help people who are starting out with watercolor. This is something that I've previously skipped over in my fundamentals as I only focused on washes and not the basics of how to use a brush, take paint out of the pans and mix water into it etc... Thanks for the many suggestions I've received over the last few months for a watercolor tutorial. I have been writing them all down and hope to compile them into a tutorial this week!

I'd love to hear from you so please write your suggestions in the comments below if I have missed anything in the poll.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 14th November: People Sketching - Fundamentals

Friday 21st November: Urban Objects - How To Sketch A Tram

Friday 28th November: Urban Sketching - Building

Amazing, i've been waiting for this! Thanks Scottie.

Richard m. Comard

Hi, Scottie, my watercolors always dry very dull. Unless i use straight paint and put it on dry paper it dulls. And I’d love to see how you place the painting in the correct place on the paper. I always end up with the chimney out of the picture or the house seems right but the landscape background doesn’t fit. Thanks. BTW i love the dot method. I can’t wait to try it on the portrait.

Patricia

I can’t wait for this one. While I can usually match what you are doing pretty well in your tutorials, on my own it’s a different story. I’m anxious to learn more about watercolor basics and techniques.

Robert Manfield

Having trouble with reflections in water

Elly

I was hoping for some good brand recommendations for watercolors :)

Christina

Cauliflowers when blending to make soft edges!

PeiShin Chen

I'm always struggling with water control. Sometimes the watercolor leaves a clear boundary on the paper, which isn’t what I expected. It looks like a separate layer that doesn’t blend with the neighboring color.

RUTH KOLODNEY

I would love it if you could cover the range of issues from colors, warm vs cold, complementary and contrast.

Reese Fleischer

A go-to video for mixing all different skin tones.

Noah Johnson

Fine line work would be great as well! I can’t get the color to apply properly it’s always not enough pigment or too much water

LISA

How to best refill watercolor 1/2 pans with tube paint? Just fill it up or do in layers with drying time in between? Can natural hair brushes just be rinsed well with clear water to clean? Thanks!

Kerstin

When i started with watercolor, the biggest struggle was … people said, add lots of water to the paint. But than i had way to much water on my paper. That made me almost throw water colors out again. Luckily Scottie showed up on my youtube. I still hated watercolor, but i gave it another try. Phew. Now i dont like acrylics any more 😅

Watch It Played

Echoing Lisa's request for "How to best refill watercolor 1/2 pans with tube paint?" and John's "Whether it’s important to keep the paints in the pans clean, and if yes, how?"

Lilith Uhler

I am interested in choosing the color(s) to use for shadows. :)

dave

Judging by the comments this subject might require a 2 part tutorial. Wondering if you ever use a color wheel and if so could you demonstrate.

Marcey Allen

This will be a great tutorial!

Kris Kirby

I would also love your opinion of other brands besides Windsor & Newton Cotman - what are the different attributes of some of your faves? Maybe you could show us too in the video if you have other brands you use.

C Heathershaw

Water control - if I water down the paint enough to get the very light color, I end up with too wet of paint on the paper. I've tried drying my brush off before I dip it in the paint so that all of the saturation is coming from the paint, but I still end up with beads/puddles of water when I put it on the paper. When I try to mop up some of the excess watery paint with a dry brush, it either still leaves a bead of water (which then becomes a hard edge or cauliflower) or it lifts the paint off and I end up with streaky color.

Beverlin Hill

For sure adding water to paint. It seems that I add too much. If I don't add enough, then the color is too dark. Also, I don't know how to spread the color evenly down the subject like a face or a building. I end up with streaks or the color is darker on some sections than others. And I get the cauliflower effect as well. Does 100% cotton paper stop that from happening? I am using 140 lb watercolor paper.

John

I think this is a great subject for this week and could be game changing for me and others who struggle with mixing colours, getting the right amount of water, getting even washes and avoiding cauliflowers . I’m really looking forward to this tutorial.

Noe de Casas

I really struggle getting a variegated wash, either mixing two colours or going from light to dark with the same one. If I try to control the amount of water it looks almost like two blocks of colour, and if I add more water for the two of them to mix then I get cauliflowers. I would love some tips on this, it’s supposedly a basic technique and yet I can’t handle it properly.

john connell

how to paint clouds and skies, as when starting a watercolour landscape if you fail with the sky the painting will end up in the bin.

Tina

Adding water to paint is a key I think. But to be honest I`d like to hear about all of those. What about a series of tutorials? :)

Patricia

Also, on the topic of adding water to the palette, I think I need to start drinking more tea. Scottie often refers to the strength of tea that the wash should resemble. 🫖😉

Mary Chang

Layering and Transparent vs opaque colors

Fran Stricker

Mixing different colors and how to choose colors.

Evan Burse

You offered some great suggestions. Put me down for: -Paper tips -Choosing colors -Watercolor control

Xaviera Rabenjamalala

Echoing below comment I would really love to do see some color wheel with explanation on how to mix color best. A guide on skin tone color as well. And especially how to do shadows. I feel with my pictures it always stands out a lot. Not really organic. I saw a tutorial where shadows wre added before the main color - what is the big difference and waht is your opinion on this technique?

KC Chandler

Water Control: Is the paper too Wet? Too dry? Is the brush too wet? Too dry? Is the paint too wet? Too dry? How to fix each of these conditions.

AishahArt

All of them is important but i feel like the main ones that i do not understand and I would like to learn are: adding water to paint, how to do, how much water and warm and cool colors too :)
