UPCOMING TUTORIAL: Friday 30th January: Color Theory!

This week I'm making a tutorial all about color theory. I'd love to hear from you on what you'd like to learn and what you find challenging. I've already created a tutorial for beginners on how to start using watercolor, now I plan to make a more advanced tutorial on color mixing, picking colors and applying special washes.

Let me know in the poll below and why in the comments!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 6th February: City/Landscape

Friday 13th February: Facial Expressions

Friday 20th February: Building (With stairs?)

How could you imagine we would pick just one? 🤣 of course we want to know everything about colours! 🤣

Matthew Sims

All of the above but mostly adding depth

Andrea C.

I struggle with how to choose colors that actually work well together. The simple binary of complementary colors isn’t enough when, for example, every red doesn’t go with every green. And how to use pleasing color and value combos to evoke certain atmospheres/moods.

Lorna Graham

All of the above will benefit me Scottie but my number 1 would be adding depth. I love adding shadows as I find it transforms a sketch. Looking forward to this one. 🙂

Bekki

I voted for "something else". Any of the suggestions would be fine. I was just wondering, in your tutorial you do, if you could use an example of "clear glass" and how to paint it. That's a toughie for me.

grunkle vaxis

Picking values and making sure you can get a range of them

Dkraw

Choosing colors based on time of day. How light affect colors and different ways to change your limited palette to achieve them.

KC Chandler

How to mix muted colors from groups of three

Kath McK

All are good topics! Can you please give guidance on how to fix mistakes, ex. applying an initial wash that is too pale. Thanks.

Elly

I'd like to learn about warm and cool colors :)

Dacia Willow

They’re all really good topics! I picked all of the above but adding depth would be a top pick.

Dot Love

I would like to be able to chose 3 or more colors that complement each other in a single painting.

Sara

I have trouble with going too dark too soon. Enjoy your lessons so much!

Lee

Choosing colours, particularly in regard to limiting the number of colours used.

Beth

Like all of these topics—but in particular struggle with adding depth. Thank you! Love your style and class content!

dave

I think you should really stick to the basics. I.e., how to make colors with the three primary colors. Greens being the most interesting to me. Then, how to warm and/or cool the result.

Hi Scottie, You cover most of the basics in your introductory tutorials . However, I found that just because I went through all of the beginner tutorials did not mean that I understood its application or was I able to assimilate it all into my art practice. So for me I find it most helpful to continue to practice with your help. Thanks so much for your patience and kind teaching.

Silattahoe

This might not really fit the topic "colors" but if you could fit it somewhere, I would like to learn how to just use black and white and grey shades to "color" a sketch. And when limited to these colors, how do you then add shadow to show depth? Thank you.

Monica D Franks

I believe I tend to use excessive watercolor, resulting in my pictures appearing excessively dark. I’m at a loss for how to achieve the ideal balance of light and dark.

Dionna

Can you do some tutorials using watercolor pencils.?

KATRINA RITTERS

I’d love to learn how to layer up watercolours to give them depth and vibrancy

Ros B

Adding depth is the main one for me, as I start quite light and it’s hard to know how much darkness to add. I’d like to understand how to recognise which colours are warm or cool and how to use them.

Mukul Apte

In addition to the options I ticked, I’ve seen videos where a complementary colour is used first to build shadows, followed by the actual colour. Would love to learn this technique.

Ned Oliver

Choosing shadow colors/tones!

Dawn

I would love to learn more about layering your colors. Like when you look at your sketch, what color do you start with to make it come alive.

Jim Dunkerley

I'd be curious to know if your approach to watercolors is different if you are out and about doing "urban sketching" as opposed to sitting at a desk with reference photos. Maybe there is no difference.

Steve Moore

Hi Scottie, Thanks for asking us what we'd like to learn from your tutorials! That's such a gift. I am familiar with color wheel basics and how to mix a particular color I want from other colors in my palette, but I still struggle to find *combinations* of colors that work well together in a drawing or painting. Do you have any suggestions or guidelines for that?

Dee Renee

I like Dionna's request about using watercolor pencils, and with a waterbrush

Bonnie Kenney

One of my biggest challenges is what color to use for shading & adding depth. I know you usually use a bluish purple, but is that the best option for every shadow? I look forward to learning more on any of the topics though

RUTH KOLODNEY

I would love all of the points above discussed at some point. Thanks

Kristin T

Being new to watercolor, anything you cover regarding this topic will be useful for me. And hopefully not too overwhelming! Thanks Scottie.

Maureen M

im excited for this video!
