Michelle

Thank you so much Scottie; that was brilliant!

Elly

This was incredibly helpful, especially the theory on warm and cool colors and how to best mix them so as not to get muddy colors. Also the part on how to hold the brush when doing splatters haha, I still need to get the hang of it😁 Thank you!

Elly

By the way, do you not use purple lake for shadows anymore? used to be your default :D

Ferd

I think your warm and cool blues might be reversed. Thanks for the great information.

Bekki

The first thing I tried on this was mixing Payne's Gray. That's the one color I don't have out of a 60 color set I bought a couple of years ago. Perfect mixture!

Bruce Jones

This exercise was really good. I struggle trying to keep all these different options in my head. This was very clear. Never thought about shadows being a middle value. That is a good tip. I really like the graduated wash, followed by darker values on top.

Simon

Thank you Scottie, I would like to ask, as a beginner with no artistic background, what palette shoud I buy if I don’t have any at the moment? In terms of colors and how many. For my very first watercolour sketch. Thank you in advance 🙂

Watch It Played

I love these fundamental videos. Thanks for continuing this series!

Margaret B Smith

Using a different technique namely fresh colours is going to be a challenge after using muted colours in my botanicals. It will be fun to do something less structured and realistic.

Lorna Graham

Really found this interesting Scottie’s and so useful. I’ve just sat and watched the tutorial, will have a go at the short lesson in the morning. Loved the way the depth was added to the frames and learning about the colours, so good 🙌🏻

Lorna Graham

Apologies, typo error in your name Scottie (above). Was good to see your sketches from your previous job 🙌🏻

Kerstin

Your way to explain things is just really amazing. 🧡

Rosie Green

Bloody Awesome Scottie! :-D

Nad

Excellent video with amazing tips. Thank you so much

Sara

Very helpful! Your examples are spot on. Thanks!

Paul S

Possibly the single most helpful tutorial in my time following Scottie. 👍👍

Ros B

Thanks a lot, very clear. The theory is so useful. I need to go back to the fundamentals now and keep practising the graded versus flat washes.

Eun Cho

This is the best color theory tutorial I’ve ever watched!! Thank you Scottie! 👍🏻👍🏻

Marie

That was very useful, Scottie. Nice range of techniques delivered in a concise and clear manner. Done many of your tutorials but this adds a layer of understanding I didn't have.

Cathy Amato

Great resource. Found it very useful

Kerry Methot

Scottie, do you use neutral tint to darken and existing color when doing the 3 washes?

carolina lorenzati

Hi Scottie, I hope you’re doing well! I’m really enjoying your Patreon classes — they’ve been incredibly helpful for my sketching practice. I had a question about color temperature that I wanted to ask you, just to better understand your approach. In one of your explanations, you classify Ultramarine Blue as a cool color and Cerulean Blue as a warm color. However, in most traditional color theory references (and in my own experience with watercolor brands like White Nights and Winsor & Newton), I’ve usually seen them described the other way around: Ultramarine as a warm blue (leaning toward violet) Cerulean as a cool blue (leaning toward green/cyan) I was wondering if your classification is based more on practical sketching usage, visual perception, or a specific mixing context, rather than traditional theory. I’d love to hear your reasoning, since I find these nuances really interesting and helpful for developing a more intentional palette. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Best regards,Caro

This was so helpful. Thanks a lot. Once I finished my cheap water color paper block I'll repeat the examples on my own.

Ester

Thanks Scottie! I had so much fun already with updating the unused water color set I already had (Van Gogh, 18 colors so had to do some translation of color names lol). And I'm finally sketching again, where my perfectionism stood in the way for a very long time. Priceless to have this back little by little.

Brianna

This was so detailed and easy to follow. Thank you!

Diane

When you add Ali crimson into your vir. Green, does the Ali crimson pan get dirty from your brush already having the green on it? Apparently not, but I think mine would get messy

Jay Eskenazi

hi. I'm back in the Patreon. :). This class was good. one suggestion to add that would help us. you speak about whether the colors in the palette are cool or warm, etc. it would help to put the colors in the palette we are using on a color wheel or other image so we can see these things b/c right now I have to admin I do not understand why lemon yellow (for example) is cool exactly. Update: I created this and emailed to you. :)

I’m currently on module 3 or 4 of the beginner course with Scotty, and I am absolutely loving it! Each lesson is amazing, his technique and artistry are truly exceptional. I’m having so much fun, and I can already feel my skills improving. This is absolutely the best investment I’ve made in years! Merci Scottie!

Rita Pavloff

Scottie, I absolutely love your teaching style!! You break things down in such an easily digestible manner. I've done many of your tutorials, this is one of my favorites. Thank you!!

Lyn

Fabulous lesson thank you Scottie

David G.

Excellent! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I learned that I hadn't known things that I'd thought I had known, especially in the shadows explantion.

Maureen

This 1.6 tutorial was immensely helpful. Learning about the color wheel, how to mix colors and avoid muddy colors, the three layers, shadowing. Just fabulous. Merci!
