Thanks Scottie. Looks like that’s a cue for me to get painting

Naim Ramos

Wow! Appreciate you talking about all the tools available. There is so much information out there, but it's always great to get feedback from the artists themselves. Especially with so many alternatives you show us.

Anthony Wong

So helpful! I'm about to go travelling and will take my Cotmans travel set of 12 half pans. I've got two spare spots but I can't decide between Permanent Rose, Purple Lake and Payne's Gray. I know you can make purple from other primaries but I use it quite a lot from your tutorials and it makes such lively shadow areas. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Joe

Thanks for all the helpful information. I was wondering about the bamboo board you use on your desk. I'm looking for something not too cumbersome but easily tilts. Can you share the make and model number or any other thoughts or recommendations? I'm a new member and love your work. Thanks.

Elly

Hey Scottie, I'm wondering if you'd recommend the Hahnemühle 100% cotton Sketchbooks (250gsm), I have been using Stillman & Birn but wanted to try out a 100% cotton paper. Thank you!

life art student

that was a great information video. thank you

tugce ercem isaacs

Great information and explanation! Thank you so much! I am new here and really excited! :)

Tracy Howe

Just joined and excited to be apart of your community and to learn more from you- you really make learning easy!!! Watched the materials and supplies video - what do you use the posca white tip maker -I know you apply it to your watercolors but what does it do—why etc.?? That is the only thing I don’t have have ….just curious. Thank you!

Jessica

Scottie, do you have an Amazon link for a good set of brushes? I currently have the Princeton 10 and 12 that you use but that’s literally all I have and I’m thinking I should get a flat brush and maybe a few others 😅

Frieda

This was very helpful! I tried so much palettes and colors, but a limited palette of basic colors in a lightweight palette with sufficient mixing space works best for me! So I ordered the set you recommended and are using and the small one for when I go out urban sketching! Keep it simple!

Frieda

It’s Etchr week at Artemiranda where I order regularly. 30% off. But I like sketching on pads better than in sketchbooks. But maybe for other folks!

Alex Rodriguez

Hi Scottie. I’m having trouble sourcing the Uni-ball 0.38 Vision pen. Is the elite version also waterproof? Thanks.

Frieda

Hi Scottie, what is the W&N professional substitute for purple lake cotman? Thank you!

SHRUTHI GOPAL

Hi Scottie! My watercolor set does not come with Paynes grey. What colors do I mix to get something like it?

Jodie Kelly

Just wanted to share for Aussies that Meedan is a rebrand of Baohong and they have an Australian website with very reasonable prices and there are quite a few discount codes floating around :)

Lorraine A

Just joined and I see you using a Calligraphy pen. I have several but the ink is not waterproof! Any suggestions? Also, I’m excited to start!

Kavya

Hi Scottie, nice to meet you! This was my first lesson and I am already super excited. I have the Daniel Smith essentials set and few additional tubes that I am hoping to mix to match your colors. I am an absolute beginner, can’t wait to learn.

Jodie Kelly

Hi Scott, I am looking to buy WN tube paints. I remember you saying you sometimes get the professional v the Cotman grade. Just wondering if you see much difference in the student to professional grade and do you think if budget permits it’s worth getting the pro? I wasn’t sure if the stronger pigment in the professional grade was maybe too much for the style of light wash. I currently have kuretake and find it’s a bit too opaque and harder to get an even wash with. Thanks so much!

Mandana

Hi Scottie, would you recommend water brush pens? or any other materials suitable for outdoor sketching, instead of carrying a jar? thanks

Chris Powell

Great video, Scotty. I made myself a ‘Scotty’ palette so I could easily follow along with the tutorials. I had most of the colors already, but purchased Purple Lake because I love it in your shadows. I did have to make 2 substitutions: quin rose for permanent rose and cobalt turquoise for the turquoise. I’m guessing they will work as substitutes. I’m enjoying going through your beginner lessons, even though I’m not exactly a beginner. On to Lesson 3.

Craig Livaich

Hi Scottie. Joined yesterday after a few weeks of my new meditation sketching Urban buildings. Your dot method for perspective is great. I did one yours “a small building with rainbow”. I liked it enough to try water colors over. My sky is so bad it’s tuff to look at. Started your beginner’s course, and quickly realized my building success was a fluke. Question: Ive been using fountain pens. I’d like to stay with them. Bad idea?

Fat Panda

If am buying the Winsor Cotman set, and those substitute colors, do I need to get extra pans for the colors? I've never purchased a watercolor before, so am not clear how they are packaged. I assume the watercolor cakes are hard when new and I can just pop out the two unused ones, and squeeze the replacement colors in those pans. Is that right?

Peter

Artist grade is more expensive initially but it lasts forever compared to student grade which is has much less pigment. From my experience it’s better and ultimately cheaper to use artist grade, particularly if you buy tubes rather than pans

Mandana

Hi Scottie, I have got Hahnemuhle 250GSM (100%cotton) sketchbook. would you recommend sketching with watercolor on both sides of the paper? Or just one side? How about Etchr 230 GSM? thanks

Mai.O

Hi Scottie, I joined today! I immediately ordered the tools. Is it okay to use a water brush? Also, would you recommend not using a mechanical pencil or pencil to make a rough sketch?

Emi 🦋

Thank you so much — this was very helpful! I just joined and I’m planning to get all the materials today.

Emi 🦋

Just to add, my new passion is nature journaling. I am just starting... 🐣

I'm so excited to finally be part of the community 🥳 After admiring your use of color and effortless sketching on YouTube, I finally worked up the courage to start my own sketching journey! I'm a graphic designer and I'm somewhat good in more realistic drawing, since it's "easier" to copy what I see. Your way of teaching and techniques blew my mind and made sketching look approachable to me. Though I couldn’t find Purple Lake anywhere, I’ll make do with my Schmincke Horadam 12 half pans box (which, of course, I was too intimidated to ever use 🫣) and some mixing for starters. For sketching I'll use fountain pens with water proof ink. Happy sketching, everyone!

Lorna Graham

Hi Scottie, just received new brushes Princeton round Aqua Elite sizes 10, 8, 6 & 4. Just curious, do you store your brushes in a cloth wrap? Also I’m keen to look after these so any tips on cleaning and storing will be great. Haven’t used them yet but plan to on next tutorial ☺️

Maria Gonzalez

I just joined (after being a follower on Youtube for some time) I have almost all the materials except for the white pen, which I just ordered (along with a few of the pens that you recommended) for now, I'll use the Micron Pens I have... I'm excited to get started!

Nigel Seviour

Hi Scottie I have been watching your tutorial on u tube and I have found your method of drawing and teaching help me understand, thanking you for sharing, I am so glad I have joined and look forward to to learning with and your members

Sheena T

I just joined! Very excited to get started :)

Kevi

I took advantage of the Black Friday annual membership. I'm looking forward to applying your instruction to paper.

Matthew Sims

i just joined because of your Black Friday deal. I'm excited to learn from you (and others)!

Richard Greene

Are there downloads associated with this first tutorial? Can I do this with draphite?

Lisa Yanti

Hi Scottie, I’m new to the team, and it seems the video isn’t functioning correctly as it cuts off intermittently. I tried with iphone and ipad both are having same issue.

Ito dos Remedios

Hi Scottie! Can't seem to get my hands on Purple Lake. Any alternatives you can recommend?

Brenda torpy

i got cut off. Joined after following you on YouTube. Love your bright colors and style. What is the difference between a hue and the color. Can you sub a hue. Are they interchangeable in you pallette.

Julie Hines-Lyman

I am excited to dive in! I have been learning watercolor for a bit over a year, and often am tracing in order to paint. I really want to learn to draw! Is it ok to use pencil, or do you want me to stick with ink? I am excited to get into urban sketching!

Massimo

My set came with dioxide violet and not with dioxide purple. Is the same color?

Raul Luis

Just jumped on board to your wagon!... have been working with sketching and watercolors... I needed this kind of direction... looking forward to your classes!... Raul

Raul Luis

Just ordered the pens... I have plenty of quality arches, hahnemühle and etcher sketch journals and added some sketch notebooks to take lots of notes...really excited about your tutorials Rick!...

Mandana

Hi Scottie, what is the largest size of Watercolor paper (100% cotton) available in the market? do you have any recommended brand in Australia?

Alexander Hopper

I picked up these exact pens that I could find in my area and have been following along with sketches. When I went to use watercolor to paint the sketches about an hour after I completed them the ink still bled with the watercolor and became muddy. Is there a solution for this or something I am missing? I use the same pen, cold pressed watercolor paper, and thought I left enough time to dry. Thanks!

Rayna

Hi Scottie! New subscriber here today! Celebrating Canada Day by joining you after seeing a tutorial of yours last evening that covered a building / house here in St. John’s, NL. Question re the TWSBI… I have a couple already and am wondering what size tip that is? EF, F or M? I also have several Lamys. What size would you recommend in those?

Ashli Grant

Hi Scottie, Is the Uniball Vision Elite a suitable substitute? I also have the Uniball Vision Elite and Pilot V7. I just signed up today but I had bought these earlier in the year. Thank you!

Jean Maxime René

Hi Scottie, I wanted to start following your tutorial but while subbing the paint for watercolour pencils. I happen to own all the colours you've mentioned (or very close equivalent) but in Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolour pencils. I got a great collection of these for free and I had already started to urban sketch with them, I'm loving it so far. I understand that some of your teachings won't be applicable to me and I'm comfortable with this, I'm willing to "translate" the concepts. Any advice for me though? (in case you happen to also know a bit about watercolours pencils :))
