Another very helpful video! What fountain pen(s) do you use?

Aprilrose W

Hi Scott, just joined today and watched the first two lessons of fundamental techniques. My question is what is the basic techniques for drawing the overlapping lines for example the "knots", any particular directions or paths? I hope I make my question clear/understandable. Thank you!

Julie

Hi, Scottie. I’m new to your Patreon and truly appreciate the high quality of your tutorials. Thank you for the inspiration! I’m committed to practicing and trying to overcome my tendency to draw very “tight” and detailed. My question is whether you think it is possible to eventually switch back and forth at will between this loose style and a more controlled approach. In other words, could I hope to be skilled at urban sketching AND botanical drawing?

Simona

wow I'm enjoying sketching a lot! you are a great teacher , thank you so much!

Juan Cantos

I've always loved drawing but after discovering your channel I'm on another level. Im beginner drawing like this, but really loving it!

Naim Ramos

So entertaining seeing how my drawing turned out in this lol

Ghaida Adel

I have a solid grasp of lines, so I’m not exactly a beginner, but I’m really enjoying your practices. They’ve given me confidence and trust in your upcoming watercolor tutorials. Even though I’m still a complete novice with watercolor, I’m excited to continue learning from you!

Joan Roig

What's the paper that you use to cheaply try things out? Didn't get the naming :)

etiana

hello i am curious to know if before one chooses this style it is good tohave a good knowledge or eye for perspective and analysis of form?

etiana

the last one is from Etiana

Madhumita

Thank you, Scottie, for a great tutorial. These exercises really helped loosen up my hand. My kids were wondering why mom is so bad at drawing, especially the blind ones! 😆 Looking forward to more practice!

Lydia Dardi

Great tips for loosening up... thank you!!

IG-M.Sketchink

"Hey Scottie, thanks for your tips! I have a question—when I do timed sketching, I like it, but I get nervous because of the time and because I’m not happy with the final result. Is that just part of the process? Any advice?"

Mandana

Hello, watched your videos on YouTube! Amazing! looking forward to sketching along! 😍

Ron

Hi.... I'm left-handed and I have been drawing left to right, but then my hand is covering the sketch, (also, when doing a pencil sketch I just sometimes smear as I go along). it took me probably longer than it should to realize I should probably be drawing right to left. so I'm trying to retrain myself to draw right to left as I start this course. any thoughts about that?

life art student

so I managed to do all of these except that van! I bet I tried a dozen times. I cant make it make sense! I am really bad at perspective so I look forward to learning that chapter. seriously I have never been able to draw vehicles. and I try and try over the years

Sue @71

Thank you for this lesson! It really helped make sense about how to loose sketch. As you mentioned I was trying to just draw faster but it didn’t work.

Nad

Thank you this is great! Would you mind doing a video as detailed for the water color part. I practiced the wash exercises from the fundamental video and i watched and practiced some of the tutorial’s but I still mess up when trying to add water color to sketches. Thanks again for all the great content

Hanna

Great exercises! Doing a whole bunch of them. Interesting to see that one line drawing has given me so much more confidence! I can draw better than I anticipated

Alexandra Seidel Santos

Hi there, new to this course. I see I’m going to have to do these exercises daily!

Miguel Nerio

This is an awesome tutorial! I'm going to start sketching everything around me just to loosen up my hand! I'm going to do it daily.

Mamatha Balasubramanian

I joined Patreon today and I’m having so much fun already. Thank you so much for breaking it down to basic and your clear explanation. Look forward to learning more.

Mike Bess

I'm retired, a life long doodler and was introduced to you by the YouTube algorithm. Subscribed to your Patreon last week and really enjoy your presentation style and approach to sketching. Look forward to completing the exercises.

Jay

SHRUTHI GOPAL

I had so much fun doing the exercises and seeing my line work! When I draw, I tend to go slow, have a very firm grip and try to get the exact shapes! Thinking of all the biology drawings back wheni was in school!! All these exercises are so wonderful! Loved it!!

Ainka Narine

I’ve just joined patreon and I tried these exercises. Ironically I prefer my timed sketches to the others. The line work looks “sketchier”. Thanks for the lesson Scottie !

Jean Green

Just joined this channel and I'm looking forward to learning how to sketch.! I love your process and you explain the lessons very well! Ty Scottie!

Camerahappy

Total newbie here, hugely enjoyed the session, I definitely need to practice 😂

Joanna Bielaszewska

Awesome exercises, loved them! And the details about the grip - so simple but oh! game changing.

Sigrid Noack

I really appreciate the focus on how to hold the pen, absolutely changed things. I am really looking forward to all the other exercises. Thanks Scottie

Rebecca Stone

This was great; I feel a lot freer when attempting to draw. It's easier to use the bigger muscle groups to get the shape at least. I had a lot of fun and giggles doing this. Thankyou.

Debbie Golding

I need a better pen! And a looser grip. Practice practice practice! Thanks Scottie!

rem ster

Excited to learn from you! Thank you for explaining so clearly, plainly and in such a calming, friendly manner!

Izabela Tomczyk

These tips are great, I never knew that different grip can make such a difference. I always felt my drawings were "wrong", like, I always had the feeling that there was something missing, no matter how hard I tried. Now that I know about the different kind of grip, I'm going to practice drawing everything this way :D Thanks a lot !

Nigel Seviour

Yes a good example of how to hold your pen for drawing thanks

Bekki

Wow. This has made such a difference to not have a death grip on my pen. LOL I never realized how tense I've been just trying to draw something.

Isabelle Godin

Strange I don't see the reference. Normal?

Stephanie Bravo

I was trying to copy exactly the movements of your hand and it wasn't working, and then I had to come to the understanding that I have to find the "Natural" movement of my hand? like there is this basic understanding in loose sketching, but at the same time it is so different because each individual artist has their own style lol IDK how else to explain it, but anyways thank you Scottie I have only watched a couple of your videos and I have already learned so much.

Ros B

That was fun!

Michael

Just joined the program and my black and white pens arrived today. I thought it would be better to ‘master’ the sketching process before proceeding with colours. Thoughts?!

Bekki

I love doing these loose, extra loose, one line, speed exercises. Great fun to practice.

Pat Theyerl

This was very helpful. I have been sketching for weeks and realized my grip was much too tight.

Nik Gheysen

Hi Scottie. I just joined your Patreon. I love your style. I think I will enjoy these lessons a lot! Many thanks!

monica

I'm really impressed with this tutorial! You talked about all the mistakes I make: perfect or dotted lines, error rejection, and incorrect grip! I really need to change my attitude.

Sherry White

My first line work, great exercise. A lot of fun and not that bad, I would never had tried this before. Thanks Scottie!

Robbin Kelly

I have watched your videos for awhile on YouTube and did subscribe previously but life interfered. I'm back now and excited to begin again!

Cindy

Hi Scottie! Just signed up today and excited to get started. I have taken a couple classes here and there, and one of the instructors described blind drawings as a way to connect what you are seeing directly to what your hands are doing. I really enjoy doing them. There is that moment of the "big reveal" when you look down and see whether your hands were in synch with your eyes or not. And more often that not, it's good for a laugh!

Margie

Holding my arm slightly above the paper and moving at the elbow has made the top of my arm and my shoulder ache. Otherwise, making all those loose lines and weird creations was a lot of fun. Great exercises. Thanks.
