Michael

This was a great tutorial and I really enjoyed it. On the last one, I was surprised that my drawing looked much better than I expected. At the end you said the next video is about washes, which video are you referring to? I'd like to view that one next. Thanks!

Sandrine Salas

Thanks you so much for this tutorial that I found very helpful.

Dan Misson

Started this and loved doing the coffee grinder but the cat... ekkk. I'll need a bit more confidence there I think 🤣

Dan Misson

Is there merit in repetition of drawing the same 6 things a few times? Over and over again? Tomorrow I'm going start this and do it for 30 days. 5 loose style drawings a day, with a max of 5 min time limit for each drawing. These images Scott, Still life, houses, maybe people, nature, flowers etc I may draw the same thing twice, but I'll just draw something to loosen up my sketching 😃 gives me 25mins of drawing a day and 150 quick loose sketch drawings by the end!

I am a new member,how do I activate a demonstration,i.e. can I select the one I want to study.I tried clicking on them but I can't get them to open,can anybody help me.Thank you.David

I feel like I am too much of a beginner to actually know how yo outline or plan. I really tried doing it but it didn’t work.

Christina Wieser

I'm also new here and I'm excited about the first lessons. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. Thank you Scottie.

Wendy Rowe

Really enjoyed this and such a difference knowing a few techniques to break down the subject into manageable sections. I'm actually starting to think I may be able to draw ;-) many thanks Scottie for your invaluable help.

Sharie Bonin

I feel I did ok on buildings, people not so much. Though I’m glad you show the different methods. The faces I do are terrible. Hopefully one day they will get better. Certainly glad I found you to help. So Thankyou.

Petra

Thanks Scottie, first I watched the whole lesson so I could understand it well. Now I will rework the refeference photos and start with the cute cat...and so on. When I`m happy and have a little success, I know what motifs I prefer. ..I think something alive...

Petra

My first cat looks very funny -:) I try it tomorrow from the other side....just for fun.

Petra

I still have to practice on the figures. The proportions aren`t right yet. I think you explain the different shapes really well, it works for me reasonably well.I hope in the people lesson you`ll show us more

Petra

and I can improve.

Petra

Should I first start the urban sketching lesson in front of people fundamentals ?

Gonda

Hello Scottie, I started yesterday whit the first tutorial and had a real lot of fun, whit todays tutorial I discovered the "dots" I think this will really change my approach, thanks!!

Lex Sijtsma

Hi Scottie, just started with your course and enjoying it very much. The approach with the “dots” helped me very much, because it forces me to look very good at the reference, the proportions. Really makes a big difference. Thank you.

Ruth Loewen

That cat was just SO hard! I think I did it 10 times before I got anything really recognizable. My outlines are so wrong! But the coffee mill was easy. Irregular curves are what I get wrong.

Annika

With all subjects I get frustrated, because I seem to be missing the ‘artist’s’ eye. I see things much larger ? If that makes sense. I can’t seem to re-proportion, for example, I use the dots but a building to me looks like it should take up way more space, but then I don’t have room for the other half of the reference. Same with bodies, I put the dots and yet still what my eyes see are not in proportion, so the head is typically much larger and the bodies not proportioned. I don’t know if this is a common thing for non-artists? Anyway, hoping practice improves the whole lot.

Kristin

Oh My the dots! Errgg, that is really hard. They confuse me, but I did, with the people, draw very light circles the same size as the head to reference the body. My people, for the 1st time ever, actually looked proportioned properly! I can get the people, the cat, and even the coffee thing, but the buildings were a bit harder. that perspective gets wonky!

Joey

Thank you for this fundamentally tutorial! Really enjoyed it. I noticed I really enjoyed doing people. I normally get really scared of starting cause I seem to feel really embarrassed whenever the proportions are off, but this definitely made it fun!

Mukul Apte

Really enjoyed this tutorial, Scottie! It has given me a new level of confidence!!! My sketches are not like I would have liked them to be...but I am sure it will get better with practice. Thanks

Marie-José Dupuis

Scottie, am I supposed to look at what you are doing and copy you while you are drawing or only look at the reference ? Not sure how to go about it. I am having a great time!

Willian Velasco

Hi, do you recommend any books to improve the techniques in this tutorial?

Melzer Miroslav

Oh that cat with scarf there is riding that orange van in previous video.. Hi Scottie, i have question or maybe some thoughts...I drew coffee cup and it was nice, i was satisfied, maybe because i have already drew some cups, but when i try somethink else, like that van, it look terrible, shapes, proportions, perspective..all bad, all flat..horrible and im not enjoing it. Do i have to draw everythink lets say hundred times to get some better results? It looks you are able to draw anythink for one attepmt. So how do i achieve this?

Carson Turner

Great tutorial! My favorite were the people, although the most difficult. I struggle with getting the correct proportions between the torso and legs. I also find it difficult to get the stance of figures right. On to more practice!

Barb Schulz

Really well presented. Seems so easy! Ha! Practice practice practice

Sandy

Love these tutorials! Couldnt draw a stick figure. Was amazing to learn loose style. I was happy with cat, coffee, single building and even a person! Cant believe I could do it! Multiple buildings tried several times, cant get size of different shapes right yet. I will keep trying! Thank you for these amazing tutorials.

Shannon

skinny cats, skinny coffee grinders! ah well..Enjoyed this lesson.

Jennifer P

I started this exercise yesterday, but I notice everytime my drawing ends up bigger than what I planned out with the dots. How do I fix this please?

Melody Jones

I did better than expected with the buildings. The cat, well he turned out pretty strange lol. I found leaving little gaps as you suggested added extra to my work. I just have to focus on not jumping ahead with the details and develop my focus. thanks so much for sharing your skills, your teaching is super helpful! 👍

Samira M

It came out better than I thought, tho still a fair way to go My cat seems angry tho… good lesson thanks …

Naim Ramos

People and animals... the results were funny, and I was laughing at myself the whole time. Compared to other things I've tried, the results were much better than before. Breaking down people into smaller sections is definitely much easier.

Samira M

My first try at people and one is drowning in his jacket. Need to work on proportions for a bit I think

Kristin

I've noticed that when I am drawing a more complicated objects, I need to start with what I feel is the easier portion first. As an example, on the coffee mill, I started with the bowl and moved on to the box and added the handle last. In your technique, is that OK, or should I have started with the handle first like you? I am just afraid if I would have, it would have gotten away from me and it would not look like a mill at all.

Mike S.

Just joined and I'm excited to learn from you Scottie! Love your approach and I feel confident I can improve. I'm going through from the beginning and had a question pop in my head that I didn't see posted elsewhere: What are the advantages/disadvantage of learning from flat images vs from life as I'm getting started with your technique? Is it ok to do both or should I try to get a better foundation using flat reference images, and then move on to drawing from life? I have experience attending drawing classes in the past, but never went with specific thinking/goals in mind. And was never brave enough to go straight to pen! Thanks and keep the great presentations coming! ✌️Mike

Jean Green

Scottie, I just joined and starting from fundamentals, but I'm so frustrated with my drawings. I try to do the drawings with you , but pause when I need to. I have trouble with the measuring which you seem to do effortlessly. I don't want to post anything yet, but I will continue....

Milo

Hi Scottie - I came back to resume this lesson from last week expecting to continue with the coffee grinder sketch, but it looks like the lesson has been revised. Is that the case, or did I get disoriented and the coffee and the cat with the red bow and other images are really in another lesson? Thanks!

Adrian

Hello. I didnt't want to comment at first, but I guess it's better to be part of a community rather than just someone in the background :) I'm well into my 30s and never drew before. Objects are crooked and dots connect at odd angles but I hope that will improve over time. For someone like me, do you recommend doing previous lesson linework everyday before sketching something from tutorial lessons?

Stephanie Bravo

believe it or not the most difficult part of this exercise was the orange lol

Barb 3

Thanks Scottie, great first lesson. Your technique made such a difference 👍🏼

Gabrielle Zaretzky

Hi Scottie I just joined last night, Im really looking forward to practising these dot process. I wanted to get into this art form for awhile. My husband and I are about to go on a cruise to New Zealand, and I plan on doing some sketching of my adventure so looking forward how it goes.

Wilhelm Bembenek

How can you use this method in a real live sketch without a picture?

Michael

Hi Scott - the 16 pan Winsor set is not available in Canada. Looks like I will have to get the 12 pan and then add the missing colours with tubes..

Graham Thompson

After drifting from one thing to another without making any progress I have decided to re join you Patreon and start right back at the beginning. Just done the shoe sketch using the dots straight in with pen and, yes, I made some mistakes but it looks similar to the shoe in the picture and I am very happy to have done it. Definitely going to stick to the beginners series and work my way through it before trying to do stuff that I know I cannot do well yet. Many thanks🙏

Cindy

Oh gee. Who knew a single object (shoe) could so tough. So far, I have made a clown shoe and a baby ski boot. Hopefully, the next version of the tennis shoe will look more like a tennis shoe. I do not like doing pencil underdrawings. I like going straight in with ink, so your method with the dots is super helpful - I struggle most with proportion, so am very thankful for this lesson and the patient, logical way that you teach.

Sofia

Drawing is a challenge for me, but this.... is yeeey to the dots! It's also keeping the sketch tidy :D Thank you for sharing your process!

Shantell Bingham

I’m really enjoying this new method of seeing and transferring shapes to paper. I had my own made up way of depicting objects w my watercolor.. I actually loathed the sketching part and would skip directly to color and shadow for how I made forms. I’m really looking forward to seeing how my watercolor changes. Anyhow, sharing my warmup for today! As you can see I need to work on the smaller scale coordination.
