I'll show you how to sketch people in a market scene and a really nice building in the background.

I took this photo while urban sketching in Circular Quay in Sydney. I focused on the people and the feel of the market. The building ended up being less of a feature in my sketch than I initially intended. I hope to do one more building tutorial soon using the second reference that we voted on and I'll post that for my Sketching School tier.

This is the much longer uncut version of my YouTube video so you can follow along step by step using the photo reference below.

When there are buildings to sketch, I will hesitate. However these tutorials are helping to ease the effort. I’m beginning to enjoy the choices.

Any particular reason why you chose to draw from the people up to the building, and from the one woman in the middle to the people walking instead of say, the other woman sitting beside the woman in the middle you started with?

I attempted to sketch people outside but I found it difficult to capture a person's outline because they move as they twist and turn unlike a reference photo, so I'm curious how you capture and adjust the outline when drawing in real-time?

Two things I’m grateful for: I’m finally learning how to thin out my washes—before they were nearly as thick as gouache—and getting rid of the notion that I must be faithful to the reference—counting windows, etc. Thank you, Scottie!
