I'm just finishing up a tutorial on how to draw a face in side profile and thinking that this could be a good mini series. I could include a front view and 3/4 view tutorial as well.

Then main feedback I've been getting is that you like the dot method for the facial features but would also like a method to measure the overall silhouette when starting the sketch.

I've already recorded a tutorial for the above but let me know any ideas for the rest of this series!

Thanks,

Scottie

Yes, a method to measure the overall shape would be really helpful in all views/angles.

Bring it on, the more tricks I learn about proportions the better. Great stuff Scottie

I agree with all your ideas and find the dot method works the best for me. The more ideas for varied position the better.

I'd love to learn how to measure and get angles, proportions & shapes right. Somehow I always place the dots at wrong spots. 🙇‍♀️

Drawing the half hidden eye and the nose in 3/4 always throws me off. Whats the best way(s) to ensure better proportions and angles for this troublesome part? As always, many thanks Scottie.

Yes please all 3 angles would be a great help. 👍

Scottie, here's a suggestion. I have "fouled" quite a few urban sketches when I put in distant people and messed up nose, chin, or mouth. Sometime both in placement and size. So how about a sketch along with farther off heads that aren't "architect-people" but still have a little facial detail. Maybe heads that are 10-12-14 mm high in a sketch book; something like that. I seem to do fairly will with front view because the thirds method of guessing proportion works well for face-on, even in miniatures. But the side views are still a puzzle and an occasion for sketcher's fear. Cheers.
