In this tutorial I'll show you how to draw a face in side view using a simple sketching method to find the overall silhouette before sketching loosely.

Make sure you download the reference and templates below to help you sketch. You could use the line template to sketch on top of to help with proportions.

Thanks to all those who have contributed to ideas for these tutorials as it lets me know what would help you all most! 🤗

I would love to see a front view tutorial next

The side view as you have given here is great. Finally the quarter view is getting easier because your tutorials have more.

Thanks, Scottie! Much appreciated. Either 3/4 or front view next would helpful for me. On to 1M subs 🙂

How do you choose which brush to use? E.g watercolour brush or a flat brush. Also, it would be helpful to learn which colours and colour combinations to typically use for areas such as as shadows, dark hair, light hair, dark face/skin, light face/skin, etc.

Patric Urso

How about some of these with various head gear on ? Hats, scarves, that sort of thing.

The new template really helped get the nose, lip , and chin correct. I tried the picture before your video and I had a little trouble getting the lips out enough. I had to flat a face. I think the 3/4 angle is the hardest to get right. Face forward and side view seem more like one plan perspective. I am really enjoying Patreon. I am doing more sketching and practice always helps. I still feel better starting with pencil than move to pen.

thanks for another great tutorial. The front view gives me the most trouble...

Is it weird that side views are much harder for me (compared to 3/4)? I struggle with the angles and connection of the bottom of the nose to the lips to the chin.

Rick Morris

the front view is always the more difficult for me. I always seem to get the proportions wrong.
