TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  Urban Sketching (Japanese Shop Front)

This week we are sketching a Japanese shop front! I tried to find very detailed and interesting shops where we can practice our line work. Let me know which reference you'd like to sketch, why you picked it and what you'd like to learn in the comments. Can you also spot 'Momo' the cat in each reference? 🐈 (Maybe you'd like to hide him somewhere in your sketch for people to find in the group chat 😊)

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting  4th March: People Sketching - Group of medium size people

Week Starting 11th March: Fundamentals - Portraits for beginners

Week Starting 18th March: Fundamentals - Trees and Plants

If traveling to Japan is not in our plan, sketching a shopfront will be a nice vicarious travel moment. I liked them all, but 3 “sang’” to me!

Karen King

I was going to vote for the one with the cat until I realized the same cat was in all of them. So, I'm good for any although I voted for 3.

Anzumana

If we end up doing 3 would love to know how you would do the calligraphy in number 1 :)

CathV

Gee that cat gets around! #3 because I like the arrangement of the window and door.

Mary L Doty

I like #2 because of the colors. The light blue really surrounds the shop, the entry, and the cat. The balloons above the cat seem fun also.

Karen

#3 - I like all the different kinds of spaces—dark doorway, glass case outside and intricate roof details. Quite a challenge!

Jo

#3 looks perfect.

Jodi Dawson

lol since they all have a cat , I like one with bicycles too, I struggle with bikes - thanks for including the location 😊

Joni K

If I saw #2 in person, that’s the one I’d want to sketch… the colors!!! 🤩

Jennifer

Perfect timing as I’m off to japan tomorrow

Cindy Donovan

I’m leaving for Japan on Sunday so this is perfect timing! I hope I can use some of these tips for lots of buildings I discover! Thank you 🙏

Allison Cobb

I think the coloring on #1 is much more interesting and I love the bicycles out front and the detail in the awning and signs.

Leanne Rees

I like the bikes and the complexity of #1. It would be great to see how you simplify it.

carroo

I really want to sketch #2 because it’s so quaint and will look great in a sketch. Also it looks just like how I would imagine a shop front to look, so it would be useful to have in one’s repertoire. You could easily turn it into a flower shop, a hat shop or anything you would like.

Rita Yuko Urasaki

I’m so exciting! I’m a Japanese Brazilian woman living in Japan and I love this country. Whatever people choose will be great for me 🤗

Vivienne Adamson

I would like to learn to draw 3 Scottie as the roof is a bit more complex with different shapes and lines. There are also different signs and lamps so much going on. Where to start? XX🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Josh

I like #1 because it has bicycles. I'd like a focused session on bicycles (small, medium, and large). The come up a lot and are tricky.

Carol Renwick

I vote for #3 because I would like to learn more about dealing with all the items in the shop window.

Petra

Sketch 3 with the cat and the roof .Enough Details, but not too much!

Lorna Graham

I really didn’t know which one to choose but settled for #1 as it appeals to me a little more than 2/3. Whichever wins I’ll be happy. That cat is doing some travelling Scottie ☺️

Deborah Rifkin

Nice choices! I voted for #1 because I want help figuring out how to draw those bicycles in perspective.

Mayela Fonseca

I didn't vote for #1 because of the bicycles! I've always had problems drawing them. Perhaps Scottie you can do some ellipsis. Those are always difficult for me. Not only bicycles but also cars, the wheels.

Le 1 pour apprendre les vélos, merciiiii
