I’ll show you HOW TO DRAW A FACE with correct proportions in this step-by-step tutorial.

I've tried a new step with finding the chin. I'm still not 100% sure it was very clear so please let me know what you think! I've made a template below to explain the idea 🤔. It was a good experiment before I make my big portraits fundamentals tutorial.

(At the moment I plan to go back to my method of sketching the face shape and then dividing the face into three sections using the 4 Dot method. Then I could use the step in this tutorial of finding the chin as a 'checking' step. I.e. I could measure the width of the face and test whether it matches the distance from the brow to the chin. Then we can adjust the chin if it is in the wrong position.)

Great tutorial and skill. Re the chin, any measurement is a great help. I’ve wrecked a few drawings through getting the chin shape wrong, it can change the emotions of the subject so much when the chin is incorrect. I struggle with getting the proportions of the head width correct, especially when drawing a face from scratch. I like how you warm the face up with the pink tones, great blending. Thanks

Great tutorial!

Really learning from you Scotty. It's a process for me but enjoying it.

This is wonderful. I still really need help with the first part in terms of doing the hair the cap etc. It will work pretty easy for this picture. However, it is not always clear how to identify this first outline limiits..

Leanne Rees

I would love more help in this area. Do I just keep on putting a few more specific dots in..

Leanne Rees

Great way for the chin measurement. However, that is basically the same as measuring from eyebrows to the mouth, and down to the chin again.

Mayela Fonseca

I like this process a lot. Easier to find the chin this way. I think the explanation was very clear. I also like doing the "circle" with the dots. Thanks.

Thank you for the chin tip. Ive really struggled with this placement, this makes it very easy to follow.

I really, really enjoy your tutorials! You make freestyle sketching for a super novice so much easier. You’re my fav artist to follow. TY so much!!!

If I could figure out how to share my work I would.

How would I decide where to position the five dots on a reference photo that I might be using to sketch a subject of my own choice?

Tracy France

Where do you upload pictures! I’ve got the Patreon app as I use it for another artist but haven’t uploaded anything as yet?

Hi Scottie. I have followed, as you indicated, all the fundamentals and am now working on the portraits. I started with the side view, ¾ view and front view tutorials, wich have made everyting fall into place. As for this tutorial, since you asked, I have no success with finding the width of the face to then find the chin; I never get it right and the result is deceiving, so the dot method is definitely my choice. I do have no problem with finding te right height for the brows, but on the width line, I never really place te dots at te right place; you do it fast and I don’t understand how you establish it…please help me. If I get this right, I would be satisfied with my results. Have a great day and thank you for all this wonderful work!
