The Shogun was a military leader who served under the Japanese emperor and was granted authority to govern specific regions. In my opinion, it wasn't a particularly desirable position either. Personally, I wouldn't want to hold any role within the imperial court during that time period in China. Whether you were the emperor, a member of the royal family, a noble, a concubine, or an official regardless of rank, you constantly faced the threat of political intrigue, betrayal, and assassination. Even lower-ranked individuals like ladies-in-waiting, eunuch doctors, servants, or guards weren’t safe. They could be killed on a whim by someone in power or falsely accused and punished for crimes they didn’t commit. Ironically, living as a commoner might have been safer. While you wouldn't enjoy the wealth or status, you'd likely have more personal freedom, provided you kept a low profile and avoided drawing attention from any nobles who might drag you into their dangerous situations or drama.
