Tyson was definitely an inspiration for Morikawa, unsurprising because this came out in 1989 when he was at the peak of his powers. In the manga, after Ippo first comes to the gym, Takamura gives Ippo Mike Tyson KO tapes to get him interested in boxing (in the show its just miscellaneous boxer KOs)

Hajime no Ippo will be my all time fav anime Especially because it’s not just about Boxing but so much more. This Anime will make you laugh, cry, think about life and so on. Can’t wait for all the other episodes and seasons, it’s gonna be such a blast 🗣️

For us who was bullied in school Hajime no Ippo means even more. I love the outcome how the bullies wants to become his friend. Never really happened for me, but I ended the bullying and got their "respect" after finally (after years) fighting back and won against one of them, bullies are only tuff when they are in a group but not so much 1v1 ^^'
