Luffy is drained. Keep in mind, the encounter at Thriller Bark shows the stress and damage Luffy goes through would kill a normal person 20 X over.

Having Zoro or anyone be able to cut the birdcage would take away the fear of it. The fact that the birdcage’s collapse hinging on Luffy being able to defeat Doflamingo, makes the stakes that much higher. That’s why I’m glad no one has been able to cut it.

Zoro and Luffy both defeated Hordy Jones without revealing the fruits of their training. Goes to show that everything before this has been a cake walk. Zoro only coated his swords because he was forced to basically cut a mountain in half. 100% stone, no dirt or clay.

None of this has been proven in the story, the general theory is that the green sack Burgess had on his back was full of fruit (nice one, noticing the devil fruit pattern on the sack,) that's how he was planning to get the devil fruit after killing Luffy. Maybe he knew the Gum Gum fruit is round and got a bunch of round fruit ready.

I do think from a world building perspective haki users should be able to cut it, but what could have been done is make the strings regenerate as soon as they are cut. Keeping the tension of no escape while not having the accuracy.

Just a reminder, Usopp's in the same category as Nami: normal, regularly-built humans who rely on gadgets they create to take down opponents. They take damage like anyone else, and if seriously hurt, they can't move. They're not built like Zoro and Sanji, who are just on a different level physically. Some characters train hard, sure, but that doesn't mean they end up like Zoro. Even Robin, who has Devil Fruit powers, can take serious damage and end up unable to move like at the Sunflower field. And we saw how much damage Usopp took from Trebol and Sugar's toy soldiers. I wouldn't compare that to when Zoro took on Luffy's damage transferred through Kuma's powers as that was on another level entirely. But the damage Usopp took from Trebol? That's closer to what it probably felt like for Usopp, relatively speaking, compared to what Zoro went through with Luffy's pain. And remember Zoro's fight with Mihawk, just one slash took him down. How long did it actually take him to heal from that? It wasn't a few days. We gotta stay realistic here and think this through.

Yeah I think they had expectations that post time-skip Usopp would have been less cowardly, so they are dissappointed. but imo that's how Usopp's character was always supposed to be like.

Its not really a tough look for Usopp. Hes a normal ass human who is cowardly, it would make no sense if he just lost all his fear and is suddenly wired the same as Zoro or Sanji, fearless superhumans that defy logical thinking and common sense. Usopp and Nami are the most real characters written in One Piece, in a story filled with cartoonish super humans, theyre grounded in reality and are meant to show that even if youre normal, you can be usefull

Luffy had to go into Gear 4 just to be able to break the strings in the first place and I’m sure the birdcage strings are tougher than that. I don’t think Zoro even with Haki is a match for it at this time.

im going to slightly have to disagree on something with you here. Usopp in alabasta was an absolute tank and actually took more damage than any other strawhat. I thought that was going to be one of his attributes to the team... So the disappointment in usopp really comes from his lack of development this far into the show. Hes made some, but minor compared to everyone else. Just have to accept hes just a "normal" human who wont really evolve in any significant way.

sure but it should be haki vs haki and doffy will have stronger haki then zoro. Not to mention its Luffys matchup ruins the powerscaling if zoro can just cut it

@R&G Understand where you're coming from. But I would say the difference in attack levels between Trebol+Sugar and Mr. 4+Ms. Merry Christmas (mole lady) is pretty significant too. I definitely agree Usopp's development has been the least, and I get why that's disappointing, but not everyone develops or progresses at the same speed within the same timeframe. Usopp is a timid person by nature. Sure, he's bulked up physically, but building up confidence and bravery isn't that simple. It takes experience and time to work on that. It might come easy for some characters, but for others it's genuinely harder. And sometimes, by sheer luck, absurd things just happen to fall into someone's lap like they do with Usopp. I think what Oda's trying to show here is that there are different types of people, from Usopp to Luffy to Zoro, but everyone can still achieve their dreams, just at their own pace.

@takezoh I would disagree that he gained zero courage. It might not be a lot, but he did gain a little. It's normal to be scared. To have fear is just human nature. I too think Usopp was getting a little annoying and frustrating to a point. But he needs some credit for going up against Trebol and Sugar despite having that internal conflict with himself, being scared but still striving to be a brave warrior.

@Rice & Ginger i get what you mean but in the end he always does show courage even tho he gets beaten and faces literal monsters like in Alabasta or now in Dressrosa, severely outclassed by devil fruit users that toy with normal humans but he faces those fears when it matters, he just is not able to stay courageous all the time But yes, Usopps constant whining and fears is one of many things Toei uses to stretch the Anime so i totally get your frustrations, i scream "TOEI wth are you doing?" everytime we get 15 boom sounds or reaction shots in a row
