Ippo knocked down Sendo because his punch was more compact with a shorter path than Sendo's punch, which is why it landed and knocked him on his ass. However, as you said, Sendo got back up. The compact, shorter-path punches generally do better in boxing than the huge motion punches (like Sendo's smash)

The more I revisited this fight the more I think they get Sendo from Ashita No Joe “Tomorrow Joe”. Rightfully a hero and badass in his own right.
