Cartoon characters tend to either wear one standard outfit, or wear an unreasonably large wardrobe. One thing I realized shortly after I started was that I actually had a story justification for giving Kay a small selection of clothing--what she was already wearing, plus anything she could find in the cargo.

So I got excited about the possibilities of expanding Kay's outfit, both to include different styles that could have belonged to anyone on Earth, and to fit different climates as she went to new places.

Scattered notes:

  • The top middle drawing is both very off model and is blatantly a Splatoon outfit
  • That "1973" shirt on the top right was the beginning of the idea that became Kay's "J" letterman jacket; that Kay would wear clothes with arbitrary text on it that she had no context for. Drawing a "J" is easier than writing "1973".
  • That bottom right drawing with the cargo shorts is possibly my favorite drawing of Kay in existence
