Production on both Episode 2 and 3 began with very little preconception as to what the setting and the creatures therein would look like. Here's a page where I first doodled out some concepts for what kind of creatures I could try out.

Most concretely, I started with possibilities of world "themes" that I could try on for Episode 3, written in a bulleted list at the top left:

  • Glacial World
  • Jurassic World (Har)
  • Grasslands

(I went with none of those.)

I started with a strong focus on walrus-like creatures; most of the drawings on this page reflect that trend. I tried to find some way to approach such a creature from an "alien" perspective, you can see I tried on big eyebrow hairs, sideways tusks, some weird elephant trunks, all kinds of things. I wrote "The Lorax" in the middle of it also. There's a thing with long ears on the left side, a thing that looks like a ball of fluff with a face, a cat (?) with a marching band hat I think?

You can tell this is a pretty scattershot part of the process. Basically none of this stuff gets reflected in the final product, but it's the kind of stuff that comes out when I first start thinking, "What do I want to put in this story and this world?"
